Our Mission

The Women’s Fund of Santa Barbara is a volunteer-driven collective donor group that enables women to combine our charitable dollars, providing significant grants focused on the critical needs of women, children and families in south Santa Barbara County. The Women’s Fund is committed to building a large community of educated, strategic givers who are inspired to make lasting change in our community through the impact of collective giving.

How the Women’s Fund Works

WE WELCOME ALL WOMEN to join as members (see page 25).

WE COMBINE OUR CHARITABLE DONATIONS to make significant grants to local nonprofits, making an even greater impact than we can by ourselves.

WE IDENTIFY critical community issues.

WE RESEARCH local nonprofits that address selected issues and create a ballot of potential grants for members to consider. The research process includes a thorough review of a nonprofit’s goals, finances, leadership, sustainability and measurable results and ensures that all projects are compelling and worthy of support.

WE VOTE in the spring to choose the nonprofits the Women’s Fund will support with our annual membership donations collected during the previous calendar year.

WE CELEBRATE the announcement of recipients at our Celebration of Grants event in the spring.

WE VISIT grantee sites in the fall and review mid-year and final reports to assess the measurable outcomes our funding has accomplished.

Happy Anniversary

Raise a glass. The Women’s Fund is 15 years old! What better time to reflect on our beginning, celebrate our achievements and look ahead to our future?

In 2004, a dozen women brainstormed around a dining room table to find new ways to support our community nonprofits. Bold ideas were put forward: Pool our funds. Do our own research. Decide together where the money goes. Do not hold fundraising events. Make large grants. A mission statement and guiding principles emerged, and the Women’s Fund was born. It’s 15 years later and, wow, how we have grown. From 68 members to nearly 1,000, from $140,000 in grants to over $7.2 million, from 2 grantees to 102. And yet, the real measure of our success is the nearly 100,000 neighbors we have helped through the nonprofit programs we have supported—families and individuals struggling with hunger, domestic violence, homelessness, mental illness and so much more.

As we look ahead, this is what I know. We have a strong reputation as a highly regarded grantmaker and an enthusiastic, growing membership. So I hope you agree that we should keep doing more of the same.

Thank you for making the Women’s Fund of Santa Barbara a critical asset to our community, now and for decades to come.

A LETTER FROM OUR CHAIR

WHAT IS THE WOMEN’S FUND?

A $75,000 grant to the Teen Court program of CADA funded a full-time licensed counselor to work one-on-one with young, first-time offenders who struggle with mental health issues.

WOMEN’S FUND FINANCIALS

Since its inception in 2004, the Women’s Fund of Santa Barbara has operated as a Field of Interest Fund of the Santa Barbara Foundation, which means the Foundation handles our financial transactions and serves as our 501(c)(3). For this service we pay a 3% administrative fee.

The Women’s Fund’s financial guidelines are straightforward. We strive to minimize our expenses so that we can maximize our grants pool. Our administrative expenses rose as membership grew so we invested in technology allowing us to operate more efficiently.

Since our founding in 2004, our fiscal home has been the Santa Barbara Foundation. In 2018, the Santa Barbara Foundation generously funded our legal costs to apply for tax-exempt nonprofit status.

The following generous members and friends helped defray Women’s Fund expenses, to ensure maximum distribution of funds to our grantees.

At a lively reception, members exchange ideas and make connections.

Volunteering for the Women’s Fund is educational, rewarding and fun!

HOW TO JOIN

The Women’s Fund of Santa Barbara welcomes all women to become members. It’s easy! You make a tax-deductible* donation and join as a Group Member, an Individual Member or both. Your donation can be made online with a credit card or by sending a personal check, foundation or Donor Advised Fund check, IRA distribution or stock transfer.

• Join as a Group Member with a suggested minimum donation of $275. Each group reviews the ballot of potential grants and votes together to select specific projects. For every $2,750 donated annually, the group receives one vote.

• Join as an Individual Member with a donation of $2,750 or more annually. Each Individual Member casts her own vote after reviewing the ballot of potential grants.

Women who join or renew by December 31 are eligible to vote in the following spring when we select our new grantees.

If you have any questions or you want to start a group with your friends, family members or colleagues, the Women’s Fund is happy to help. Just email us at [email protected].

*To the full extent of the law.

It’s simple to join or renew: Go to www.womensfundsb.org

WHY JOIN

Why should you join the Women’s Fund of Santa Barbara?

Because...

IT’S POWERFUL. Your donation, combined with others, will create larger grants and have a bigger impact on our local community than most of us can have on our own.

IT’S EDUCATIONAL. You will learn about critical community needs and effective programs transforming innovative ideas into viable solutions.

IT’S EASY. You don’t have to do anything more than donate and vote to make a difference. No fundraisers. No tickets to sell.

IT’S ENGAGING. Celebrate and meet our grantees in both an annual event setting and a site visit format. If you want to get more involved, there are volunteer opportunities with the Women’s Fund and with the many nonprofits the Women’s Fund has supported.

IT’S EFFICIENT. Expenses are minimized in order to maximize the impact of your tax-deductible* donation to grants we make in the community. Hardworking volunteer leaders, generous underwriters and modest event fees help offset the expenses of our growing membership.

IT’S FUN! You’ll meet interesting women committed to improving the lives of local women, children and families.
