2018 ANNUAL REPORT
Dear Friends,
On Saturday, November 4, 2017, at the Eighth Annual Epilepsy Consumer Conference, I was officially introduced to the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Chicago community. It was my first day on the job, and it is something I will never forget. I was amazed by the passion and knowledge that our clients, staff, and the professional community had about epilepsy. I left feeling very motivated and also very aware that there was so much for me to learn.
Looking back today, I am moved by all that I have learned, not only about epilepsy, but by the impact it has on individuals, their families, and the entire community. I am dedicated more than ever to providing programs and services that will fulfill the needs of the nearly 140,000 people living with epilepsy in the Chicagoland area. I am encouraged by what was accomplished in the 2018 fiscal year, including our advocacy efforts to support the passage of Illinois House Bill 4146. Now that it is signed into law, insurance companies are prohibited from changing a person’s coverage mid-year. This is vital to individuals with epilepsy.
Moving forward, I am excited as we reinforce our three main pillars: Advocacy, Case Management, and Education. By increasing our number of clients and expanding our outreach efforts to the 43 counties we serve, I believe we can successully achieve the goals of these pillars and “Seize the Narrative” back from epilepsy.
Thank you,
Bryan S. AndersonPresident & CEO
THE EPILEPSY FOUNDATION OF GREATER CHICAGOCreated in 1946 as a grassroots effort in Illinois to help people with epilepsy, the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Chicago is an Illinois not-for-profit organization serving 43 counties, offering advocacy, case management, and educational services to people with epilepsy, their families, and the communities in which they live.
MISSION STATEMENTThe mission of the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Chicago is to lead the fight to overcome the challenges of living with epilepsy and to accelerate therapies to stop seizures, find cures, and save lives.
WHAT IS EPILEPSY?Epilepsy is a medical condition that produces seizures affecting a variety of mental and physical functions. It’s also called a seizure disorder. When a person has two or more unprovoked seizures, they are considered to have epilepsy. A seizure happens when a brief, strong surge of electrical activity affects part or all of the brain. One in 10 adults will have a seizure sometime during their life.
Seizures can last from a few seconds to a few minutes. They can have many symptoms, from convulsions and loss of consciousness to some that are not always recognized as seizures by the person experiencing them or by health care professionals: blank staring, lip smacking, or jerking movements of arms and legs. The frequency of seizures varies greatly, from once in a while to several per day.
Epilepsy is one of the world’s oldest known medical conditions, and yet too many people do not understand it. In too many cases, this misunderstanding has led to fear, discrimination and social stigma.
