Every year in the month of April, I think about my
father. April 14th is my Dad’s birthday. Though he
passed away 25 years ago this coming June, it
seems like just yesterday that I last talked with
him. Even after 25 years there are days when I
miss him terribly. I know that he would have loved
Melissa. I’m certain that he would have taken as
much delight in my three children as I do. And, I
believe he would have enjoyed visiting Madison and coming to
Messiah to worship (and of course to hear me preach!).
My Dad was a great storyteller with a wonderful sense of humor. He
enjoyed laughing and talking, fishing, playing cards, building, fixing
things, sports (especially the Packers) and countless little hobbies. He
was a loving and affirming father who spent real quality time with his
children. He loved his wife and family, and lived life to the fullest.
In April of 1993, just before his 63rd birthday he was given six months
to live. He had struggled with cancer for four years, and now finally,
the fight was over. I remember that year, hearing the news from my
Mom just as I sat down to write my Easter homily for my congregation
at the Newman Center. After I hung up the phone I recall crying and
thinking how ironic it was to be writing and preaching about the new
life of Easter when all I felt was death. Twenty-five Easters have come

and gone, and while I often miss my Dad, more often I
remember him with a profound sense of joy and
gratitude. In many ways I think I’ve lived into the
resurrection story. Recently I read this: Seen on a bulletin board at the Mayo Clinic:
Cancer is limited.
It can not cripple love.
It can not shatter hope.
It can not corrode faith.
It can not eat away at peace.
It can not destroy confidence.
It can not kill friendship.
It can not shut out memories.
It can not silence courage.
It can not invade the soul.
It can not reduce eternal life.
It can not quench the Spirit.
It can not lesson the power of the Resurrection!
This is, I suppose, the deepest and most profound
message of the Easter Season – that the power of the
Resurrection will be found in all of our lives! Easter is
more than just a memory of Jesus raised from the dead,
Easter is more a promise that all of us will discover life
again. When we are surrounded by the tomb of grief
and loss, the promise of the Resurrection is that one
day we will laugh again. When we are surrounded by
the tomb of failure, or addictions, mistakes or stress,
the promise of the Resurrection is that one day we will
be released from our bondage and forgiven of our
mistakes and given another chance. When we are

surrounded by the tombs of broken marriages and broken vows, dead end jobs and
disloyal friendships, the promise of the Resurrection is that there is a love and a life
and a friendship that will always be faithful.
Whatever cross you carry this year, remember that these crosses are limited. The final
word always belongs to God.
Remember the Power of the Resurrection!
Happy Easter my friends. Past Jef V n H Pastor Jeff (Left) pictured with his Dad, Eugene (Bud) Vanden Heuvel

Bible Study Offered Beginning Wednesday April 4th
“Trusting God For A Lifetime”
We have all heard the story of David and Goliath. David was a great warrior because he trusted in God and not himself. David’s life included many great accomplishments in the name of God. While David had many strengths he, like all humans, had many weaknesses. Even though God always offered David forgiveness, he could not escape the consequences of his sin.
This 9 week study meets at 6:30 E? led by Rich Valenta in the conference room.

This year Messiah Church will again join in celebrating National Day of Prayer by holding a prayer vigil through the day from 6:00 @? to 10:00 E?. Our goal is to have
at least one person here in prayer during that time. If we have enough interest, we could extend those times. There will be materials provided for those who wish to use them, otherwise, just come and pray as you wish for whatever is on your mind
or in your heart. Watch upcoming bulletins and the May Column for more details. There will be a signup sheet posted in the gathering space for those who wish to
sign up.

Thanks to the Social Outreach Ministry committee for providing the food for the evening meal at Immanuel Lutheran Church for The Road Home residents on Friday, March 9th. Also, a special thanks to Doris Zache for stepping up and organizing and serving the meal that evening along with Darilee Nelson. Thanks to Eric &Teresa Smith and children along with Teresa & Adelyn Bentler for coming to play with the children and a special thanks to Emily Veith & Matt Majeske for staying overnight and preparing and serving breakfast on Saturday morning.
This will be the last time we will be doing this service project because as of April, 2018 The Road Home will be placing the families directly into apartments. What a wonderful organization The Road Home is to help these families have their own home and not have to be moving from church to church each week.
I want to personally thank all of you who have helped with this service project since June, 2009 – prepare meals, help serve, play with the children, stay overnight and prepare and serve the Saturday morning breakfast - you all know who you are. Also, thanks to Messiah Lutheran Church for your support. We couldn’t have done this without all of your help. Most Sincerely,
