Whether you plan on auditioning for Magnolia Independent or are simply coming to experience WGI Winds, Magnolia Independent is excited to share its inaugural year with all of the fantastic young adults from the southern region. Our goal as an organization is to promote and further music education and performance for young people in the Southern Region through marching pageantry. As you learn and master your responsibilities, the whole team shares in the accomplishment! Our Magnolia Independent events also provide you with the opportunity to learn from some of the best in the music education activity.

Audition InformationThank you again for your interest in Magnolia Independent. This group will be made up of 30+ of the best, hardest-working, and most motivated young musicians from Louisiana and the surrounding Southern Region.

Our goal as a staff is to enable the young people we teach to perform their craft at a higher level than they ever thought possible. Each musician dramatically benefits from the individual and ensemble playing skills they acquire throughout the course of the season. Our musical goals as a staff will, however, take second priority to what we believe this activity to really be about: building extraordinary people. The lessons and the rewards of hard work, the experience of working with others, competing against other WGI Winds groups, and what the true application of integrity can do in your life here and in “the real world” are what this activity is truly all about.

Magnolia Independent will host two audition camps for the 2018 season:

Round 1 AuditionDecember 10, 2017 | 2:00pm - 8:00pm | Lafayette High School Boys Gym | Lafayette, LA

Round 2 Audition/Call-BacksDecember 17, 2017 | 2:00pm - 8:00pm | Lafayette High School Boys Gym | Lafayette, LA

Although not required, due to the highly competitive nature of auditions, it is highly recommended to attend both audition dates if possible. If you are not able to attend either audition, video auditions will be accepted and considered. If you receive a callback at the first audition, a video submission will be expected.

Upon receiving a contract for the 2018 Magnolia Independent performance ensemble, the status of your membership will updated based on your ability to continue to perform at a high level, your ability to work well with others in the group, and your ability to pay your member tuition.

What to ExpectAlthough you are going to be continuously evaluated throughout the day, the environment will be more relaxed and based in education. So try to relax and perform your best; show us what you got. We’re looking for people who already have some skills, but are also able to learn and adapt quickly to new concepts being taught. Upon completion of an audition, prospective members will receive a rating in one of the three following categories with specific information as to why you were placed in that category. The categories are as follows:

I You have the skills necessary to be a performing member of the ensemble and we are ready to offer you a contract. Your ability to attend rehearsals, maintain a great attitude, and pay your tuition will secure your place in the group.

II Your skills are very close to necessary to be a performing member. With some additional effort, those skills could definitely be brought to a I level. Your ability to learn and grow based on feedback in between auditions will be the determining factor as to whether or not you are offered a contract.

III Based on the high level of performers auditioning, we are unable to offer you a contract this year. Take the information we give you, continue to grow as a performer and a person, and we hope to see you in the future.

If you receive a I or a II at the first audition, you will be expected to attend the second audition on December 17th. Due to the competitive nature of this activity, the status of contracted members will be continuously updated based on your ability to maintain the expectations set forth in Category I.

Video AuditionsAlthough the best way to show us your skill level is through a live audition, we understand that it may not be possible for everyone to attend the live audition dates. For a video audition, make a video of yourself playing the selected etudes and selected skills. In addition you will need to make a video of yourself playing on of the selected warm-up/technique exercises on the move. The details of the move and play video will be listed later in the packet next to the selected exercise. Edit these two videos together and upload to YouTube as unlisted, not public or private. All links will be sent [email protected].

What to Bring to AuditionsTo ensure the best audition possible, make sure you make the proper preparations in the time leading up the audition date. This includes preparing your audition material, being in good physical shape, and making sure that you can financially commit to the organization. The following is a list of things that youshould bring to the audition:

• Water Jug (no drinks other than water will be allowed in the gym)• Light snack to eat during the break• Printed copy of your audition packet• Pencils• Wire Stand• Instrument (marching instrument if possible; i.e. mellophone, contra, etc.)• Sturday Shoes (you will be on your feet all day)• $25 audition fee (cash or checks payable to Magnolia Independent)

Dress will be all black. Comfortable, but form-fitting clothes are recommended so that we can see correct lines during the dance portion of the audition. Although not required pants are also recommended due to the possibility of kneeling and ground choreography.

Above all things listed in the previous list, the most important three things that you can bring to your audition are a great attitude, a willingness to learn, and an open-mind. In addition to your talent level, be aware that we will be evaluating your overall attitude and how well you work with the group.

Magnolia Independent2018 Clarinet Audition

Thank you for considering Magnolia Independent as your performance home for the 2018 WGI Season. Our mission is to enhance your performance skills not only visually, but musically as well. We hope that you can take the information you learn from this packet and apply it to all elements of your musicianship. Here are some tips when preparing your audition material:

Tips• Try to follow the instructions of the packet as best you can when preparing the music. Your vigilance to what is being asked of you will leave a lasting impression on the staff and Directors.

• For scales and fast etudes, we give an estimate for the tempo we would like to hear from you, if you cannot get the audition material up to tempo, don’t worry! Our staff and Directors would rather hear clean and articulate at a slower tempo over “muddy” and unclear at a tempo you are not comfortable with.

• Your metronome is your best friend when preparing the audition material, spend 85% of your practice time with a metronome in the background. In WGI Winds, all performers must have a consistent sense of tempo and pulse in order to be successful with what we are asking of them.

• For the lyrical (slow) etude, try to think about the big picture of the phrasing marked on the page and bring it to life with interpretation. The staff and Directors want to hear how expressive you can be!

Scales• Up to three Sharps and Flats at ca. 72-108 bpm; quarter note gets the beat. Articulation is not required but is highly encouraged! The chromatic scale will also be asked of you.

Etudes• Slow Etude - “C. Rose: 32 Etudes for Clarinet no. 1” ca. 56-72 bpm and prepare m. 1-16

• Fast Etude - “C. Rose: 32 Etudes for Clarinet no. 8” ca. 96-106 bpm and prepare m. 1-15
