This award was established to honor Louis H. Bauer, M.D., founder of the Aerospace Medical Association. It is given an- nually for the most significant contribution in aerospace medicine. It is sponsored by the Mayo Clinic. James T. Webb, Ph.D. is the 2018 Louis H. Bauer Founders Award recipient. e Louis H. Bauer Founders Award is given annually for the most significant contribution in aerospace medicine. Dr. Webb is recognized for his dedica- tion to Aerospace Medicine and Human Performance. Pilot, Aerospace Physiology expert, and outstanding researcher, Dr. Webb’s work in Decompression Sickness is the benchmark for our industry and has served to protect aviators and astro- nauts. He is a Fellow of the Aerospace Human Factors Association, Past President of the Aerospace Physiology Society, Past President of the LSBEB, member of the AsMA journal Editorial Board, and Fellow and Past President of the Aerospace Medical Association. Dr. Webb entered U.S. Air Force Pilot Training in 1966 and completed F-4 advance training in 1967. He accumulated more than 1,000 flight hours in the F-4 including a year at Phu Cat AB, Vietnam, earning a Distinguished Flying Cross and 9 Air Medals. He le the active duty USAF and entered the USAF Reserves in 1971 as a C-141 pilot while he com- pleted is graduate education at the University of Washington. He accumulated over 2,800 flight hours in the C-141 from 1971-1979. Dr. Webb completed his Ph.D. in 1979 and was selected by the USAF Academy as a faculty member where he taught Biology and Aerospace Physiology courses and also served as a T-41 instructor pilot. From 1984 to 1987, Jim served as a Research Physiologist at Brooks AFB, TX, where he studied fluid shis during onset of weightlessness and hematologic and biochemical correlates of altitude decom- pression sickness (DCS). Dr. Webb retired from the USAF in 1987 and remained at Brooks AFB, TX, as Senior Scientist, Life Sciences Group, Wyle Laboratories. Since 1987, Dr. Webb has focused his re- search efforts on DCS issues. His efforts led to a greater un- derstanding of DCS etiology and how denitrogenation tech- niques combined with exercise could reduce the risk of DCS for high altitude aviators. is was incorporated in the U-2 program and, aer further testing by NASA, it was used prior to extravehicular activity from the Space Shuttle and Inter- national Space Station. is work serves as the industry stan- dard today. Protection Division and the Aeromedical Factors Branch atthe U.S. Army Aeromedical Research Laboratory (USAARL)before rising to be the Science Program Director in 2004.Serving in that position for the past 14 years, Dr. Crowleywas further selected in 2014 to serve as the Injury Preventionand Reduction Research Program Area steering committeechair for the Military Operational Medicine ResearchProgram (MOMRP); the largest and most important of theArmy’s medical research programs, where he oversees injuryprevention research for the entire US Army, unquestionablyresulting in thousands of lives saved in the operational envi-ronment.

Dr. Crowley is recognized by the international communityfor his expertise in aerospace medicine. With that expertise,he has authored a chapter in a NATO report on aircrew neckpain, authored more than 50 peer-reviewed journal articlesand technical reports, extensively contributed to multina-tional/NATO collaborations, provided recommendations tonumerous aerospace medicine programs and working groupsand served as the Chair of the Scientific Committee of theInternational Academy of Aviation and Space Medicine.

roughout his distinguished 26-year research career, Dr.Crowley has touched the lives of virtually every US Army avi-ator and thousands of other military and civilian aviators.From constantly improving medical standards to the intro-duction of life saving techniques and equipment, defense avi-ation has been forever changed by his scientific contributions.

Dr. Crowley received his Bachelor’s degree in Biology in1981 from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and hisMedical Doctorate in 1982. He joined the Army and from1983-86 served as Flight Surgeon, 503rd Aviation Battalion.He received his Masters of Public Health degree fromHarvard School of Public Health in 1987. From 1988-90 hewas Flight Surgeon, Systems Engineering Division, at the U.S.Army Safety Center. He was Board Certified in AerospaceMedicine in 1990. From 1992-95 he was Chief, AeromedicalFactors Branch at the U.S. Army Aviation ResearchLaboratory (USAARL), Ft. Rucker, AL. In 1995 he was as-signed as Exchange Officer to DERA Farnborough, UK.Upon his return in 1998, he became Director of the AircrewProtection Division at USAARL. Since 2004 he has been theScience Program Director at USAARL.

A Fellow of the Aerospace Medical Association, Dr.Crowley has served as Scientific Program Chair and as presi-dent of the US Army Aviation Medicine Society. He served as

Vice-Chair, Aerospace Medicine, for the American Board ofPreventive Medicine from 2003-2009, and has been Chair ofthe Scientific Committee for the International Academy ofAviation and Space Medicine since 2013.

Established in memory of Walter M. Boothby, M.D., pioneeraviation medicine researcher, and Howard K. Edwards, M.D.,clinical practitioner of aviation medicine, this award is pre-sented annually for outstanding research and/or clinical prac-tice directed at the promotion of health and prevention of dis-ease in professional airline pilots. (The separate Boothby andEdwards Awards were given annually 1961–73, and then al-ternately until 1985.) Sponsored by Harvey W. Watt & Co.

Martin F. Hudson, MBBS, MRCP(UK), FRCP Edin., is the2018 recipient of the AsMA Boothby- Edwards Award. He isbeing recognized for many accomplishments in the promo-tion of health of professional pilots. He has been an AviationMedical Examiner for the European Aviation Safety Agency(EASA) since 1999. Until very recently he was the medicalconsultant for omas Cook Airlines, UK, and is currentlyvice president of the UK Association of Aviation MedicalExaminers, having served for 12 years as its Treasurer andthen for 3 years as Chairman. Dr. Hudson was theChairperson of AsMA’s Air Transport Medicine Committeefor 4 years and continues to be a very active member. He isnow incoming President for the Airline Medical Director’sAssociation.

Dr. Hudson qualified from St. Bartholomew’s Hospital,London, in 1965. Aer obtaining a Private Pilot’s Licence hejoined the Medical Branch of the Royal Air Force on a shortservice commission and gained his UK Membership in theRoyal College of Physicians (MRCP UK) in 1971. From1972–1999 he was a principal in General Practice in theUnited Kingdom and became a UK CAA authorizedAviation Medical Examiner in 1977 and has now completed40 years in this capacity. He was awarded the Fellowship ofthe Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (FRCP Edin) in1998 in recognition of his research and teaching in the fieldof hypertension. is is a very rare honor to be awarded to ageneral practitioner.

Leaving General Practice in 1999, Dr. Hudson set up anAviation Medicine Consultancy as an approved aviationmedical examiner for EASA, UK Civil Aviation Authority,

U.S. Federal Aviation Administration, Transport Canada,and the Civil Aviation Safety Authority of Australia (CASA).He was appointed as the Consultant Aviation MedicineAdviser to omas Cook Airlines (UK) in 2000 and contin-ued in this role until October 2017. He has been a member ofAsMA since 2000 and was elected as a Fellow of the AsMA in2013. For the past 3 years, he has been a member of theAsMA Aerospace Mental Health Working Group.

In 2017 Dr. Hudson co-authored a chapter in ProfessorRobert Bor’s latest book on ‘Pilot Mental Health’. He has alsobeen much involved in recent years with the development ofpeer support groups both for airline pilots and for aviationmedical examiners. He has given many presentations on a va-riety of subjects, at AsMA, for EASA, and for the EuropeanSociety of Aerospace Medicine (ESAM). He has chaired sev-eral Panel Sessions at AsMA. He is also a member of theESAM Advisory Board and serves as the ESAM liaison repre-sentative with ICAO.

Established to honor an AsMA corporate member who hasmade significant contributions to the advancement ofaerospace medicine. The award is given annually to a corpo-rate member who has made significant contributions in a sin-gle year or over a defined period. It is sponsored by theAerospace Medical Association.

e David M. Clark Award was established to honor anAsMA corporate member who has made significant contri-butions to the advancement of aerospace medicine in a singleyear or over a defined period. e first Clark award is pre-sented to Environmental Tectonics Corporation (ETC). iscompany has been dedicated to the advancement ofaeromedical technology since 1969, creating learning solu-tions for humans engaged in activities in extreme environ-ments in 90 countries worldwide. ETC is also active in opera-tional research with the establishment of ETC’s NASTARCenter in 2007 and membership in two FAA Centers ofExcellence. ETC has actively supported AsMA’s mission as acorporate member for 45 years. ETC’s innovation and dedi-cation to human performance and safety have resulted in

leading edge training equipment and courseware for high G,spatial disorientation, altitude exposure, ejection, and nightflying operations. ETC’s technical accomplishments includeinteractive spatial disorientation training devices with morethan 80 fielded worldwide. In the area of high G training,ETC provided the Holloman AFB centrifuge, that trainednearly 35,000 pilots over a 20-year period. ETC continued toadvance high performance human centrifuge technology withthe development and fielding of the Authentic Tactical FlightSimulator-400, a sustained G flight simulator. ETC developedthe Advance Disaster Management System, a virtual realitytraining system that supports Incident Commander andResponse Team training, realistically and economically. ETCestablished the Aeromedical Training Institute to providequality aviation physiology courseware and instructor train-ing, to aeromedical professionals, worldwide. ETC is active inoperational research and established the National AeroSpaceTraining and Research (NASTAR) Center in 2007. Since itsinception, ETC’s NASTAR Center has trained more than 500spaceflight participants and several astronauts, has collabo-rated with numerous universities, in cutting edge research,including MIT, St. Peters, UTMB, Drexel, and Embry Riddle,and has conducted research projects for the USAF, USN,FAA and NASA. NASTAR Center also provides commercial,civilian pilot training, offering the world’s only UpsetRecovery Training program in an advanced sustained G sim-ulator. ETC has been a significant supporter of AsMA formore than 45 years, through sponsorship of three awards,and numerous scientific meeting activities.

Robert (Bob) L. Laurent, Jr., is the Chief Executive Officer,President and Director of ETC. He is an accomplished execu-tive with over 30 years of C-level experience as a ChiefFinancial Officer, Executive Vice President of Acquisitionsand Alliances, and for the last 4 years as Chief ExecutiveOfficer. Mr. Laurent obtained his Bachelors of Science inAccounting from Villanova University. Aer a 27-year careerin the HVAC industry, Bob became Chief Financial Officer ofETC in 2011, and in 2014, was promoted by ETC’s Board ofDirectors, to his current position.

Since becoming ETC’s CEO, Bob has a driven a number ofaccomplishments of note that benefit the aerospace medicalcommunity, including; spearheading the completion of theworlds most advanced Spatial Disorientation Research devicecurrently operational at NAMRU-D, a.k.a. “the Kraken”,driving Spatial Disorientation, or SD training to more afford-able levels by introducing targeted fidelity/targeted capabilityto ETC’s Integrated Physiology Training family of products,lead ETC to invest in human factors and vestibular system re-lated research, focused ETC’s product development to aCustomer-centric/training based solutions approach toAircrew training needs and implemented initiatives to intro-duce SD training to Rotary Wing markets. In addition, ETC’sNASTAR Center was selected as a team member in theFederal Aviation Administration Center of Excellence fortraining technology and human performance, its secondCenter of Excellence.

In addition to his executive career, Bob serves on theAerospace Medical Association Foundation Board. He en-courages ETC’s talented employees with experience asaerospace physiologists, flight surgeon, and research scientistto actively participate in Aerospace Medical Association andICASM activities.

Established and sponsored by Environmental TectonicsCorporation in memory of Professor Ernsting. It is given foroutstanding researchin altitude physiology, and/or longstand-ing exceptional performance in the education, development,and administration of Aerospace Medicine and related spe-cialties.

Christy Hileman, M.B.A., RHIA, CCS, is the 2018 recipientof the John Ernsting Award. She is being honored for heroutstanding contributions to aviation safety. She is the teamlead for the FAA Autopsy Program that processes the collec-tion and maintenance of all U.S. aviation accidents’ aeromed-ical records. She also serves as a key member of the FAA’sInstitutional Review Board and the White House WorkingGroup for Medical Death Investigation System. She is excep-tional in her performance in support of aerospace medicineefforts in education, research, and information systems ad-ministration. Since 2009 she has served as a mentor forCAMI, Southwestern Oklahoma State University, Rose StateCollege, and Tulsa Community College to student internsseeking experience in the administration of medical recordsand aircra accident investigation practices. She was instru-mental in the development of the FAA’s Office of AerospaceMedicine Aviation Accident Review Program and its associ-ated data registry.

Ms. Hileman obtained a Bachelor of Science in HealthInformation Management from Southwestern OklahomaState University in 1998 and a Masters in BusinessAdministration from Southern Nazarene University in 2013.From 1998 to 1999, she was an Inpatient/Outpatient Coder atComanche Memorial Hospital in Lawton, OK. She then be-came a Contract Coder at Forum in Oklahoma City until2001. From 1999 to 2000, she was also Cancer Registrar atOU Medical Center, Oklahoma City. From 2000 to 2001, sheworked as an Inpatient/Outpatient Coder at OU MedicalCenter. From 2000 to 2002, she also served as part-timeContract Cancer Registry at Coding Associates andConsultants, Oklahoma Surgery and Urology Center,Oklahoma City. In 2002, she then became a Consultant,Cancer Registry Services, also at Oklahoma Surgery andUrology Center. From 2001 to 2008, she was alsoInpatient/Outpatient Coder at Deaconess Hospital,Oklahoma City. From 2008 to 2012, she became AutopsyRecords Administrator for the FAA and then becameAdjunct Instructional Specialist for the Transportation Safety

Institute in Oklahoma City, a position she still holds. In 2012,she also took her current assignment as Team Coordinator,Autopsy Records Administrator.

Ms. Hileman is a member of the Office of Justice/Healthand Human Services Medicolegal Death InvestigationWorking Group, the American Health InformationManagement Association, the Oklahoma Health InformationManagement Association, and the Aerospace MedicalAssociation. Her awards and honors include being nomi-nated for Outstanding Team of the Year by the FAA Office ofAerospace Medicine in 2008, CAMI Rising Star Award in2009, Superior Accomplishment Team Award in 2010, beingnamed an Outstanding Member by the Oklahoma HealthInformation Management Association in 2011, a SuperiorAccomplishment Award in 2012, the Vi Lipski Award forIntegration for Rotorcra Post-Crash Fire Investigation in2014, Outstanding Support from the Transportation SafetyInstitute in 2015, FAA Significantly Exceeds Rating award in2016, and was nominated for both CAMI and AAM Team ofthe Year (Autopsy Program Team) in 2017. She has authoredor co-authored over 16 publications and news articles, hasbeen interviewed several times for publications, and has over20 presentations to her name.

This award was established and sponsored by the AMSTGroup of Companies in Austria and the United Kingdom tohonor the memory of Kent K. Gillingham, M.D., Ph.D. Theaward is presented annually to an individual who has made asignificant contribution in the field of spatial disorientationand situational awareness related to flight.

Lt. Col. Brian T. Musselman, USAF, was named the 2018recipient of the Kent K. Gillingham Award. He is being hon-ored for his positive impacts on every aspect of aerospacephysiology. A board-certified expert in aerospace physiologyLt. Col. Musselman has led U-2 full pressure suit operations;investigated five Class A mishaps and numerous physiologi-cal events; and directed physiology, spatial disorientation,and fatigue research. e Air Combat Command Director ofOperations hand selected Brian to assist with the USAF replyto the DoD Inspector General for a fatal F-22A mishap. Hisaerospace physiology experience was paramount to theteam’s analysis, which he eventually briefed to the Chief ofStaff of the Air Force. Brian analyzed U.S. Air Force spatialdisorientation accidents, briefing the results at a 711 HumanPerformance Wing research symposium. His research was in-strumental to the procurement of spatial disorientation train-ers for aerospace physiology portion of undergraduate flyingtraining and were published in Air Force Pamphlet 11-417,Orientation in Aviation. Brian directly investi-gated 5 Class A Aviation mishaps and provided aerospacephysiology consultation to unexplained physiological eventsspanning from 2012 to 2017. He led a team to integrate a uni-versal physiological event worksheet into the Air Force SafetyAutomated System. Lt. Col. Musselman is currently the Deputy Chief of theU.S. Air Force Human Factors Safety Division at the U.S. AirForce Safety Center, Kirtland AFB, NM. He has also servedas an Aircra Maintenance and Munitions Officer; an AirForce Reserve Officer Training Corps instructor; anAerospace Physiology flight commander; a human factorsspecialist and mishap investigator at the Air Force SafetyCenter; a Pentagon staff officer; Executive Officer to theUSAF Chief of Safety and Executive Secretary for a DODTask Force; and Air Mobility Command AerospacePhysiology Training Program Manager, and human perfor-mance consultant to the Operations Risk Assessment andManagement System. He was the 9th Physiological SupportSquadron Commander, where he was responsible for special-ized support and training for U-2S aviators, the USAF FullPressure Suit Depot, and mission-specific physiological train-ing for DoD and NASA. In 2007, he served as an advisor tothe Iraqi Air Force and established the new Iraqi Air ForceTechnical Training School. He served as air mobility com-mand aerospace physiologist and high-altitude airdrop mis-sion support (HAAMS) program manager and will lead tran-sition of HAAMS from Little Rock AFB to Charleston AFB asthe 628th Medical Group Commander.

Lt. Col. Musselman earned a B.S. in Biology in 1994 fromthe U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO, and anM.S. in Aerospace Sciences (Aviation Safety) from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Daytona Beach, FL, in 2004.He completed Squadron Officers School in 1999 at MaxwellAFB, AL, and Air Command and Staff College in 2006 bycorrespondence. Troy P. Faaborg, M.S., CAsP, FAsMA, received the 2018Walter and Sylvia Goldenrath Award for his impressive his-tory of contributions to aerospace physiology. He developed acontinuing education program for Air Force physiologists,the first of its kind to identify, evaluate, and certify AerospacePhysiology-specific continuing education opportunities. He isalso a subject matter expert instructor for the Air ForceMedical Incident Investigation training workshop, a ground-breaking patient safety process. He has also developedcounter-fatigue plans for 4,000 hours of long-duration B-2bomber missions. As the U.S. Air Force operational fatigueexpert, he traveled to Hungary in 2010 to brief the 12-nationHeavy Airli Wing on counter-fatigue strategies during sus-tained operations; he won over senior officials, resulting in24-hour operations saving $30 million annually. As the firstchief of an Air Force Major Command’s Human FactorsSafety division, he developed an evidence-based approach tomitigate 99% of physiological/human factors-related mishaps.Aggressive marketing of the program resulted in a reductionof $10 million in mishap-related losses in just 1 year.

Erik L. Antonsen, M.D., Ph.D., M.S., FAAEM, FACEP, isthe 2018 winner of the Joe Kerwin Award for his advances inthe understanding of human physiology during spaceflight.Since beginning his tenure as Element Scientist for theExploration Medical Capability at the NASA Johnson SpaceCenter in 2015, Dr. Antonsen has restructured NASA’s ap-proach to exploration medicine, creating an evidence- andrisk-based approach for developing the medical system anddata architecture that will enable NASA’s human Gateway,Lunar, and Mars Missions. He has reshaped the way thatmedical systems are designed and implemented for space ex-ploration, bridging the disciplines of engineering andmedicine to create an evolvable model optimized for risk andcapability. He built a multi-disciplinary, multi-center team ofclinicians, systems engineers, computer and data scientists,risk modelers, space pharmacists, and researchers and led thisteam to create a roadmap for designing and implementing anew model of medical care for exploration which allowsNASA to develop, select, and implement medical capabilitiesthat are most likely to preserve human health and perfor-mance on extended missions without return capability.

Dr. Antonsen received his B.S. in 1997, M.S. in 2001, andPh.D. in 2004 in Aerospace Engineering from the Universityof Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and later his M.D. in 2009from the University of Illinois at Chicago. He completed anEmergency Medicine Residency in 2013 at MassachusettsGeneral Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital inBoston and is Board Certified in Emergency Medicine.Clinically he works as an attending Emergency Physician atBen Taub General Hospital in Houston, TX. He has workedin a variety of fields as an engineer and doctor, including

spacecra electric rocket propulsion, plasma light sourcesand extreme ultraviolet lithography, HIV/AIDs research inZambia, and providing emergency medical support for theRed Bull Stratos and StratEx high altitude skydive missions.At NASA he is responsible for the vision and technical direc-tion for the Exploration Medical Capabilities Element. In ad-dition to being the Element Scientist for Exploration MedicalCapabilities at NASA Johnson Space Center, Dr. Antonsen isan Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine with a co-ap-pointment as an Assistant Professor of Space Medicine at theCenter for Space Medicine, both at Baylor College ofMedicine in Houston, TX.

Dr. Antonsen is a member of the American Institute ofAeronautics and Astronautics, the American College ofEmergency Physicians, the American Academy of EmergencyMedicine, the Society of NASA Flight Surgeons, and theAerospace Medical Association. Tamara “AB” Averett-Brauer, MN, RN, Col., USAF (Ret.),has received the 2018 Mary T. Klinker Award. She was hon-ored for her efforts to meet emerging en-route care/aeromed-ical evacuation and expeditionary medicine challenges. AFlight Nurse Instructor/Examiner, she recovered survivors ofthe Khobar Towers bombing in 1996 as well as a subsequentterrorist attack in Pakistan. In 2001, she tasked aeromedicalevacuation crews/aircra for the post-9/11 response. She as-sisted in the deployment/laydown of aeromedical evacuationforces around the world for Operation Enduring Freedom in2003. She also briefed NATO’s aeromedical evacuation con-ference in Switzerland in 2010. She commanded the largestU.S. Central Command Aeromedical Evacuation squadron(124 personnel), melding aeromedical evacuation/patientstaging personnel into a cohesive team to deliver higher levelsof medical care in combat environments.

Brauer, set out on an RV adventurefor 9 months. e call came to serve again as an Air Forcecivilian and led them to Dayton, OH, and her current posi-tion as the Core Research Competency (CRC) & Researchrust Area Leader at the USAF School of AerospaceMedicine (USAFSAM), 711th Human Performance Wing(HPW), Air Force Research Laboratory, Wright-PattersonAFB, OH. She is a senior health scientist and thought leaderfor Defense Health Program and Air Force Medical Serviceresearch efforts addressing identified research gaps in en-route care/aeromedical evacuation and expeditionarymedicine. She guides research teams conducting over 80 ac-tive projects.

Ms. Averett-Brauer is a Board Member-at-Large of theAerospace Nursing and Allied Health Professions Society(ANAHPS), a Life Member of the Society of Federal HealthCare Professionals, and a member of the American NursesAssociation, the Nebraska Nurses Association, and the Airand Surface Transport Nurses Association. Duane Pierson, Ph.D., is the recipient of the 2018 SidneyD. Leverett, Jr., Environmental Science Award. He was hon-

ored for significantly furthering thefield of environmental medicinethrough his work with latent viralreactivation in response to space-flight. His scientific research has ledto innovative advancements in thebiomonitoring of reduced immu-nity, both in spaceflight and onEarth. He is world renowned for hisexpertise in spaceflight microbiol-ogy at NASA Johnson Space Center(JSC). He and his team support

both biomedical research and spaceflight operations in thecontext of identifying and mitigating environmental chal-lenges. One particular area has been the study of latent herpesviruses in astronauts for over 20 years (Shuttle, Soyuz, Mir,and ISS) and in ground analogues (Antarctica, NASANEEMO undersea habitat, bed rest, and closed chambers).Dr. Pierson has published more than 10 peer-reviewed pa-pers on this topic alone and has given numerous invited pre-sentations at key scientific meetings. is innovative work isnow leading to the pursuit of spaceflight countermeasuresagainst these mission-threatening viral pathogens.

A Fellow in the American Academy of Microbiology, Dr.Pierson served as NASA’s Chief Microbiologist for humanspaceflight and expert on the many microbiological aspects ofspaceflight for more than 36 years. Aer graduation fromNWOSU with a B.S. in Chemistry and Biology, he earned hisPh.D. in Biochemistry from Oklahoma State University andwas on the faculty of the Microbiology and ImmunologyDepartment at Baylor College of Medicine for 10 years beforejoining NASA in 1980. He and his team were responsible forformulating, developing, and implementing NASA’s microbi-ology program for current and future human exploration ofspace. His focus was on identification of microbiologicalrisks of the spacecra environment to the crew and his goalwas to prevent or mitigate these risks to acceptable levels. Hecreated and chaired the NASA Biosafety Review Board andserved as the chairman of the Institutional Review Board forNASA’s Human Spaceflight Program. Dr. Pierson has published approximately 200 manuscriptsin a wide variety of peer-reviewed journals. He also has 30book chapters, 34 NASA Technical Briefs, and 2 patents. Hisleadership in space microbiology has made him a well-recog-nized figure throughout NASA, the academic community,and the aerospace industry. He maintains academic appoint-ments at the University of Texas Medical Branch and theUniversity of Houston. NASA has recognized Dr. Pierson’saccomplishments through many awards such as: e Medalfor Exceptional Scientific Achievement, Exceptional ServiceMedal, the Certificate of Commendation, the InnovationAward, and the Director’s Achievement Award. e astro-nauts recognized his contributions in environmental healthwith the highly-coveted Silver Snoopy Award.

Dr. Pierson retired with more than 36 years of service onJuly 1, 2016; he now serves as Senior Microbiologist,Emeritus at the NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston andcontinues research. He is a member of the American Societyfor Microbiology, the National Academy of Microbiology, theSociety of Industrial Microbiology, the American Associationfor Biological Safety, and the Aerospace Medical Association.He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology.

The Eric Liljencrantz award was established in memory of CDREric Liljencrantz, MC, USN, whose brilliant career in aviationmedicine was cut short by his death in an airplane accident in1942. It is given annually to honor excellence as an educator inaerospace medicine, or basic research into the problems of ac-celeration, altitude, or weightlessness. Sponsored byAerospace Medical PLC.

Tarah Castleberry, D.O., M.P.H., has been honored withthe 2018 Eric Liljencrantz Award. She was chosen for heroutstanding service as Program Director for the University ofTexas Medical Branch’s (UTMB’s) Aerospace MedicineResidency Program. During her years there, she has ex-panded opportunities for aerospace medicine residents, in-cluding rotations with the U.S. Antarctic Program, commer-

cial space companies, and the U.S. military. Under her leader-ship, UTMB aerospace medicine residents published 30 peer-reviewed studies in aerospace medicine, received 19 AsMAand other awards, and had a 100% American Board ofPreventive Medicine board pass rate.

Dr. Castleberry received a B.S. in Biology from GrandCanyon University in 1994 and then earned a D.O. fromKirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1998. Sheserved an internship in Family Medicine at the University ofAlabama at Birmingham from 1998 to 1999 and then earnedan M.P.H. at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of PublicHealth in 2000. She served a Residency in AerospaceMedicine from 2000 to 2002 at the Naval Aerospace MedicalInstitute and then a Residency in Family Medicine at theMayo Clinic in Scottsdale, AZ, from 2007 to 2009.

Dr. Castleberry has been the Flight Surgeon for VirginGalactic since August 2015. She is board certified inAerospace Medicine, Family Medicine, and GeneralPreventive Medicine. She served as a contracted NASA FlightSurgeon through the UTMB-Wyle Bioastronautics contractfrom 2009–2012, providing support for International SpaceStation missions as well as support of U.S. and InternationalPartner astronaut operations in Russia and Kazakhstan.Following her work at NASA, she became the program direc-tor for the UTMB-NASA/JSC Aerospace Medicine Residencyas well as the program director for the UTMB GeneralPreventive Medicine Residency, serving in that capacity until2017. She is an associate professor in the departments ofPreventive Medicine and Community Health and FamilyMedicine at UTMB and Senior Faculty at Baylor College ofMedicine Center for Space Medicine. Prior to her work atUTMB and NASA, she served as a flight surgeon andaerospace medicine specialist in the U.S. Navy for 7 years.She is currently Principal Investigator for a project funded bythe FAA Center of Excellence for Commercial SpaceTransportation studying physiological effects of accelerationin the suborbital space environment.

Johené Vardiman-Ditmanson, MS, LCDC, SAP, is the2018 recipient of the Raymond F. Longacre Award. She washonored for her 20 years of outstanding service to pilots. Sheis well-known and highly-regarded in the HumanIntervention and Motivation Study (HIMS) program as acompassionate champion of pilots in recovery. She speaks atnational HIMS meetings and provides council to severalmajor airline HIMS programs. In addition, she has con-ducted research on the psychological aspects of commercialspaceflight, having co-authored two papers on the subject.

Ms. Vardiman-Ditmanson is a graduate of the Universityof North Dakota with an undergraduate degree in AviationAdministration and Management and a graduate degree inAviation Safety, with additional graduate-level study in coun-seling psychology. She is a private, instrument, and commer-cially-rated pilot, and has worked for several companies inthe aviation industry. Prior to joining the team at UTMBAerospace Medicine, she worked as a Licensed ChemicalDependency Counselor treating pilots in an inpatient treat-ment setting. She is the business manager of the AerospaceMedicine Center and also serves as a Senior CounselingSpecialist and Substance Abuse Professional.

Currently, Ms. Vardiman-Ditmanson serves as the SeniorCounseling Specialist and Manager of the UTMB AerospaceMedical Clinic in Galveston, TX. She manages all aspects ofclinical operations and development of pilot certificationpackages while additionally serving as a licensed chemical de-pendency counselor and Department of Transportation sub-

stance abuse professional, providing screening, assessment,treatment planning, and follow-up monitoring of aviationprofessionals. Further, she serves as a co-investigator inUTMB’s ongoing investigation of layperson physiological andpsychological tolerance of acceleration forces in preparationfor suborbital spaceflight, research funded by the FAA’sCenter of Excellence for Commercial Space Transportation.

Ms. Vardiman-Ditmanson’s awards and honors includethe Alfred L. and Constance C. Wolf Aviation Fund Grantfrom the University of North Dakota, the Donald I. Hernando J. “Joe” Ortega, Jr., M.D., M.P.H., has been hon-ored with the 2018 eodore C. Lyster Award. He was cho-sen for his hard work developing and molding the future ofaerospace medicine. During his career as a flight surgeon, hewas one of a handful of vanguard physicians coping with anddeveloping the new and improved “lineup card” of humanfactors concerns associated with the newer, more powerfulcombat capable F-16 A/B/ C/D models. His in-flight mitiga-tion strategies, such as the “slap-shot” neck maneuver or the“slim-Jim” abdominal squeeze are still used today to limitneck or lower back strain and injuries in high-G high perfor-mance aircra. His outstanding work at Patrick AFB, FL,earned him selection as the Air Combat Command (ACC)Flight Surgeon of the Year. Dr. Ortega first earned a B.S. in Biology at the University ofGeorgia in Athens in 1981. He received his M.D. from theUniversity of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphisin 1986 and served an internship in General Surgery atWilford Hall Medical Center, San Antonio, TX, from 1986–1987, then a Residency in Aerospace and OccupationalMedicine from 1998–2001. He then earned an M.P.H. in1999 at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, MA.From 1987 to 1998 and 2001 to 2003, he had multiple assign-ments as a USAF and NASA Flight Surgeon. In 2003, he be-came Squadron Commander at the 473rd AerospaceMedicine Squadron at Yokota AB, Japan. In 2005, he becameDeputy Hospital Commander, 35th Medical Group, atMisawa AB, Japan. In 2006, he transferred to Kunsan AB,Korea, to serve as Commander of the 8th Medical Group. In2007, he was assigned as Command Surgeon of Air ForceIntelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance Agency. Hetransferred in 2012 to become Chief of the AerospaceMedicine Division, Air Education and Training Command,which he held until 2016, when he retired as a full Colonel. In2012 he also became Vice Chair, Aerospace Medicine, withthe American Board of Preventive Medicine.

Dr. Ortega is the Founder and Managing Member of FlightDocs Unlimited, LLC, in San Antonio, where he is presentlyworking on two U.S. Air Force contracts, as well as Consult-ing Director of Operational Flight Medicine for NeurostatAnalytic Solutions. He is a member and Past President of theSociety of USAF Flight Surgeons and the American Society ofAerospace Medicine Specialists. He is also a member of theInternational Academy of Aviation and Space Medicine, theAssociation of Military Surgeons of the United States, theAmerican College of Occupational and Environmental Me-dicine, and the House of Delegates of the American MedicalAssociation. He is a Fellow, Vice President, and Treasurer ofthe Aerospace Medical Association.

Established and sponsored by the French Society of AerospaceMedicine in memory of Marie Marvingt (1875-1963), a pioneerFrench pilot and surgical nurse who, for more than 50 years,actively and untiringly involved herself in the conception anddevelopment of air ambulance services and in the educationof the general public regarding their use and benefits. Theaward is presented annually to honor excellence and innova-tion in aerospace medicine.Jeffery C. Chancellor, M.S., is the 2018 winner of the MarieMarvingt Award. He was honored for his research effortsconcerning space radiation and associated health risks to as-tronauts during long-duration spaceflight. His innovativework has directly addressed this complex problem to help ex-pand our understanding of the space radiation environmentand to better translate radiation risks to astronaut health. Hehas highlighted new areas of clinical concern, identified gapsin radiation understanding, and provided a path towards bet-ter emulating the space environment for terrestrial research.

His new work presents a novel terrestrial research approachto emulating space radiation complexity and the intravehicu-lar environment. is approach could allow more accurateanalog recreation of the space radiation environment by al-lowing for continuous generation of ionizing radiation thatmore closely matches the ion distribution, energy spectrum,and dose-rate of galactic cosmic radiation than traditionalstudy designs. His research has the potential to greatly im-prove upon our understanding of space radiation risk tohealth, providing the opportunity to prevent or mitigate fu-ture threats to astronaut crews. Mr. Chancellor joined the U.S. Coast Guard in 1989 andbecame a Flight Mechanic. He served until 1996. He becamean Operations and Quality Assurance Manager at Morton’sInc., in 1997. He attended the University of Houston in 1999and earned a B.S. in Physics in 2003. He then earned an M.S.,also in Physics, in 2005, also at the University of Houston. Hethen took a position as Senior Research Engineer at LockheedMartin Space Operations, NASA Johnson Space Center,Space Radiation Analysis Group (SRAG). As part of SRAG,he served as a Flight Controller on the Radiation Console inMission Control and as the Radiation Lead on the MissionManagement team for Space Shuttle mission STS-118, STS-120, STS-122, and STS-125 (Hubble repair mission). In 2010,he became Radiation Effects Program Manager at theNational Space Biomedical Research Institute until 2014 andheld an academic appointment at the Center for SpaceMedicine at Baylor College of Medicine. In 2012, he alsoserved as Radiation Health Officer and Space WeatherAdvisor to the Red Bull Stratos Medical Team. From 2013–2015, he served as Radiation Team Lead Scientist atInspiration Mars Mission. In 2015, he began a Ph.D. inApplied Physics, which he is currently working on, and tookhis current position of Research Scientist at theComputational Physics Group, Department of Physics andAstronomy, Texas A&M University, College Station, TX. Francisco Rios Tejada, M.D., Ph.D., was the 2018 winner ofthe Harry G. Moseley Award for enhancing aviation safety asa researcher, educator, flight surgeon, manager, and accidentinvestigator in the civilian and military sector both in Spainand in the international communities. His achievements in-clude conducting research and instruction in the field offlight safety. He was a pioneer in the establishment of poly-merase chain reaction assays for the identification of aircrewfatalities. His contributions to aircra accident investigationand aeromedical related areas such hyper-/hypobaria, spatialdisorientation, night vision, acceleration, and human factorsare represented in over 135 publications and specifically 3books devoted to Flight Safety and Aircra AccidentInvestigation.

For 11 years, Dr. Rios Tejada has been a board member ofthe Military Aircra Investigation Board of the SpanishMOD. He has been member of the NATO AGARD/RTOHuman Factors and Medicine Panel for 25 years, where heaccomplished a number of activities such as lecture series andworkshops related to the field of aircra accident analysis andrelated research. For 15 years, he coordinated a specific semi-nar as a part of the Flight Surgeon Course fully devoted toAircra Accident Investigation, including not only the mili-tary approach, but also the civilian aspects of the civil investi-gation board. Nowadays in his position as Chief MedicalOfficer of the Spanish Civil Aviation Authority, he also par-

ticipates in and reviews all the requests coming from theCivilian Investigation Board related to medical aspects, issues,and consequence of an accident.

Dr. Rios Tejada is a native of Malaga, Spain. He studiedmedicine at the medical school of the ComplutenseUniversity of Madrid and joined the Spanish Air Force in1979. From 1982 until his retirement he was stationed at theSPAF Aeromedical Center in Madrid, where he was Head ofEducation, Head of the Department of Aerospace Medicine,and Commander of the Center. Upon retirement, he becameChief Medical Officer and Head of the Medical Division atthe Spanish Civil Aviation Authority. He is a Fellow of theAerospace Medical Association, Academician of IAASM, andpast president of both the Iberoamerican Association ofAerospace Medicine and the Spanish Society of AerospaceMedicine.

Dr. Rios Tejada has been an Aviation Medical Examinerfor the Federal Aviation Administration, Organización deAviación Civil Internacional, the Joint Aviation Authorities,and the European Aviation Safety Agency. He is on theEditorial Board of Military Medicine. His awards include theMeritorious Cross (three times, Aeronautical, Distinctive,White), the Royal and Military Cross, Commendation, andPlaque of the Order of San Hermenegildo, an Award ofExcellence from the Iberoamerican Association of AerospaceMedicine, the Baleares Academy of Medicine Award, theFlight Safety Award from the Flight Armed Forces for bestpublication, and the Won Chuel Kay Award from theAerospace Medical Association.

This award was established and sponsored by EnvironmentalTectonics Corporation to honor Col. John Paul Stapp,USAF(Ret.). The award is given annually to recognize out-standing contributions in the field of aerospace biomechanicsand to promote progress in protection from injury resultingfrom ejection, vibration, or impact.Phillip Whitley, Ph.D., received the 2018 John Paul StappAward for his 35 years of experience primarily in developingrequirements and protective means for humans in the ex-treme environments of sustained acceleration, pilot ejection,helicopter crashes, and aircra vibration, including the as-sessment of injury risk and severity. His development of ad-vanced manikins, comprehensive biodynamic models, andspine and neck injury criteria have helped predict and miti-gate injuries during aircra operations. Dr. Whitley was born and raised in North Carolina, at-tended North Carolina State University, where he earned hisbachelor’s and master’s degrees in Biochemistry, and then re-ceived his Ph.D. in Bioengineering (Electrical and ComputerEngineering minor) from Clemson University in 1983. From1983 to 1995, he worked at the Naval Air Warfare CenterAircra Division in Warminster, PA, in a variety of positions.In 1990, he became Adjunct Faculty, Aerospace Physiologyand Psychology Course, at Embry-Riddle AeronauticalUniversity, McGuire AFB, NJ. Paulo Magalhães Alves, M.D., M.Sc., FAsMA, receivedthe 2018 John A. Tamisiea Award for his active involve-ment in aerospace medicine for more than three decades.His experience as medical director of the biggest commer-cial airline in Brazil gave him an operational aspect of avia-tion medicine that concerned crew and passenger health,including flight crew immunization, cosmic radiation, in-flight medical emergencies, crew fatigue management, air-cra disinfection, bioterrorism, deep vein thrombosis,SARS, and pandemics. He has been actively involved in theaerospace medical scientific community as a member of theAerospace Medical Association since 1993, where he hasbeen distinguished as a Fellow and is currently the Chair of

the Air Transport Medicine Committee. Currently, Dr.Alves is the Global Medical Director of Aviation HealthMedAire Inc. He is responsible for providing technicalguidance and analysis for MedAire’s medical advisory ser-vice. He also monitors trends in medicine and technologyand authors papers, articles, and presentations on topics af-fecting remote medicine.

A native of Natal, Brazil, Dr. Alves graduated from theFederal University of Rio de Janeiro’s School of Medicinein 1979 with an M.D., and then served a Residency inCardiology at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro’sUniversity Hospital. He earned an M.Sc. in Cardiology in1988. From 1984–1987, he served as a Professor inCardiology at Fluminense Federal University and then be-came a Cardiologist at Varig Brazilian Airlines from 1983–1989. In 1989, he became Head of Medical Informatics andlater Vice Director at the Division of Medical and SocialAssistance at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.From 1992–1993, he was the Head of the Division ofResearch and Technology at Laranjeiras CardiologyHospital; in 1993, he became Director of Human Resourcesthere. In 1994, he became Regional Medical Manager atVarig Brazilian Airlines. From 1996-2006, he was theMedical Director at the Ruen Berta Foundation, VarigBrazilian Airlines. During that time, he was also anAviation Medical Examiner for Transport Canada until2007, a Basic Life Support Instructor Trainer, and aCardiologist for the Intermediate Care Unit of LaranjeirasCardiology Hospital and at the Coronary Care Unit of theFederal University of Rio de Janeiro’s University Hospital,both until 2007. He began working for MedAire in 2007and, since then, has researched and presented on manyaeromedical topics impacting the commercial and businessaviation industries.

This award was established by Thomas J. Tredici and spon-sored by an endowment fund managed by the AerospaceMedical Association Foundation. It is given for the most signifi-cant contribution to aerospace ophthalmology and vision sci-ence.

Lt. Col. Christopher M. Putnam, USAF, received the 2018omas J. and Margaret D. Tredici Award for his contribu-tions to vision standards, and flyer protection and perfor-mance. While serving as Chief of the Tri-Service ResearchLaboratory bioeffects and vision science section, he guided anaircrew laser eye protection program that mitigated emergingthreats to over 628K US/UK civilian and military pilots. Healso conducted a NASA laser protection effort for astronautsafety during orbital docking and extra-vehicular activities.Additionally, he directed an evaluation of an Army laser eyeprotection prototype in collaboration with Natick SoldierSystems Center, verifying protection performance and as-sessed operational impact. He supported development of adirected energy lesion database of retinal injury imaging datarelevant for DoD personnel, FAA personnel, clinicians, inter-national partners and researchers. He provided a comprehen-sive review of USAF and ROKAF aircrew vision examinationand standards with emphasis on waiver management.

Lt. Col. Putnam is Commander, Detachment 5, 711thHuman Performance Wing and Deputy Chief, BioeffectsDivision, Airman Systems Directorate, 711th HumanPerformance Wing, Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) at

Joint Base San Antonio, TX. He leads the military for theBioeffects Division and oversees readiness, discipline, andtraining in addition to ensuring standards and comprehen-sion of the AFRL mission for 250 military, civilian, and con-tractors, and serves as the sole vision scientist on eTechnical Cooperation Program (TTCP) international intelli-gence working group and was recently appointed as a re-gional chair of the American Academy of OptometryAdmittance Committee.

Lt. Col. Putnam earned a Bachelor of Science degree inChemistry from South Dakota State University in 2001 and aDoctorate in Optometry from Pacific University in 2005. Dr. Boyd earned a B.Sc., in Pharmacology at LeedsUniversity, Leeds, UK, in 1982 and then his Ph.D. atEdinburgh University, Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1985. He wasAssistant Professor at the University of Texas in Houstonfrom 1991 to 1996, then became Associate Professor. In 2001,he was made a full Professor, which is his current position.He has reviewed for 30+ journals, including AerospaceMedicine and Human Performance, and several fundingagencies, including the NIH. He has mentored 29 graduatestudents/fellows, including a resident in aerospace medicine.He serves on both the Aerospace Medical Association’s SafetyCommittee as a member, the Resolution Committee as Chair,and on the Scientific Program Committee as a member. He isalso a FAA Safety Team representative co-organizing (andpresenting) safety seminars for Houston-area general aviationpilots.

Dr. Boyd is a member of the University AviationAssociation and the Aerospace Medical Association (AsMA).His honors and awards include Outstanding Educator fromthe University of Texas, an Award of Appreciation forMentoring of Resident in Aerospace Medicine from theUSAF School of Aerospace Medicine, and the Joseph L.Haley Writing Award from the U.S. Army Aviation MedicalAssociation. He has published numerous articles, both inpeer-reviewed journals and non-peer-reviewed aviation mag-azines, and presented at many conferences and symposia.

Established and sponsored by the Society of U.S. Air ForceFlight Surgeons in memory of its first member to lose his life inan aircraft accident, and to honor all flight surgeons whoselives are lost in the pursuit of flying activities related to thepractice of aerospace medicine. The award is given annuallyfor superior performance and/or outstanding achievement inthe art and science of aerospace medicine during residencytraining.

Rahul Suresh, M.D., M.S., M.P.H., was the 2018 winner ofthe Julian E. Ward Memorial Award for his work with timezone changes and their effect on diabetic pilots. e result ofhis study will help flight crew operations maintain the safetyand efficiency of crewmembers. His work has gained the at-tention of academicians as well as biomedical monitoringequipment manufacturers. He has already participated in apress conference regarding this work and publications havebeen submitted. He has distinguished himself as a leader inall areas and has continued to receive the highest ratings inhis aerospace medicine clinical rotations. He was appointedChief Resident of the University of Texas Medical Branch’s(UTMB’s) Aerospace Medicine Residency Program due tohis organizational skills, his broad knowledge base, and hisability to inspire others.

Dr. Suresh is in his last year of the aerospace medicine resi-dency at UTMB in Galveston, TX. He received his B.A. fromRice University in Biochemistry and Cell Biology in 2008, fol-lowing which he was an Indicorps service-leadership Fellowin rural India. In 2014, he received his M.D. and M.S. degreesfrom Mayo Medical School and Mayo Graduate School inRochester, MN, and in 2017, his M.P.H. from UTMB. Duringhis training, he had the opportunity to gain space medicineoperational experiences at NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC)and served as a physician at McMurdo Station in Antarctica.He completed the U.S. Air Force aerospace medicine primaryand Federal Aviation Administration Aviation MedicalExaminer courses.

Dr. Suresh has presented lectures for UTMB’s course,“Principles in Aviation and Space Medicine” on the subject ofdiabetes and air travel. His volunteer work includes theUTMB Quality Care Committee; medical support for the

Institute in Pensacola, FL. Mark’s follow-on assignment waswith the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment(Airborne), serving with them from 2009–2014. While withthe 160th, he deployed several times to both Iraq andAfghanistan and became deeply involved in en route criticalcare, helping to pioneer the initiative to ensure that all of the160th flight medics were paramedic and critical care certified. From 2014–2016, LTC(P) Jacques served with the Officeof Military Support before his current assignment as the US-AACE Command Surgeon. He currently serves in a variety ofadditional roles, including Medical Director of the U.S. ArmyAir Ambulance Detachment at Fort Rucker, faculty for theArmy’s Aerospace Medicine and Occupational MedicineResidencies, an inspector for the U.S. FORSCOM ARMSInspection Team, and a voting member on the Joint TraumaSystem’s Committee on En Route Combat Casualty Care. Mayo Clinic research into stem cells for lung transplants andother types of transplants are increasing the odds of survival.While lung transplantation is a lifesaving option for thousandsof people every year, it’s not perfect. erefore, doctors inthe Mayo Clinic Center for Regenerative Medicine are tryingto solve the most lethal imperfection of lung transplantation, asyndrome called chronic organ rejection.
