Craig Hospital in Denver is world-renowned for the specialty rehabilitation and research for patients with brain injury and spinal cord injury. Craig is a 93-bed, private, not-for-profit, free-standing rehabilitation and long-term acute care hospital that provides a comprehensive system of inpatient and outpatient medical care, rehabilitation, and long-term follow-up services. Half of Craig’s patients come from outside of Colorado, and in the past four years the hospital treated patients from all 50 states and several foreign countries. Craig treats approximately 500 inpatients and 1,500 outpatients per year. Craig is designated by the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR)

as a Model System Center for both spinal cord and traumatic brain injury. Craig is also the NIDILRR National Statistical TBI database for the other 16 Model Systems Centers in the U.S. Craig received the prestigious Magnet Recognition in 2005-2010, 2010-2015, and 2015-2020, and the Magnet Prize Award in 2012. Craig received the American Nurses Association’s NDNQI® Award as the top rehabilitation hospital in the U.S. for quality care five times. 1. Discuss current treatment guidelines and best practices relative to the continuum of traumatic brain injury care for adults and children in the following areas: a. Medical diagnosis and treatment, including pathobiology, neuroplasticity, and neuroimaging b. Evaluation and management of mild traumatic brain injury and sports concussion c. Clinical interventions for management of cognitive, visual, vestibular, and motor sensory dysfunction d. Applied technology for rehabilitation e. Community resource facilitation f. Aging and lifelong wellness considerations g. Neurobehavioral assessment and treatment h. Legal, ethical, and funding issues. 2. Interpret current research findings and determine implications for application to clinical practice and optimizing patient outcomes. 3. Describe the impact of traumatic brain injury on survivors and their families and identify community resources to improve quality of life. 4. Enhance communication and knowledge dissemination within the network of traumatic brain injury service providers by gaining an understanding of other roles and perspectives.

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of professionals involved in the care of children and adults with brain injury, including physicians, nurses, case managers, allied health practitioners, insurance executives, administrators, attorneys, and researchers.
