Thecutofthegownidentifiesthedegree.Thebachelor’sgownhaspointedsleeves,whilethemaster’sgownhasoblong-cutsleeves.Thedoctoralgownhasbell-shapedsleevestypicallycrossedwithbandsofvelvet.

Thelengthofthehoodindicatesthelevelofthedegree.Thecolorofthevelvetborderindicatesthefieldoflearninginwhichthedegreewasearnedandincludeswhiteforarts,goldforscience,andbrownforfinearts.TheinnerliningofFordhamhoodsismaroon,theUniversity’sofficialcolor.Fortheacademicprocession,graduatescarrythehooddrapedovertheleftarmwiththecolorthatrepresentsthedegreeclearlyvisible.Candidatesdontheirhoodsafterthepresidenthasconferredalldegrees.Thehoodshouldbeplacedaroundyourneckandshoulderssothatthemajorportionhangsdownthebackandthevelvetisup.Thecordonthefrontofthehoodshouldbefastenedtoyourclothing.Thebachelor’scapiswornwiththelongpointoftheshelltotherearandthetasselyouwillreceivetotheleft.

The University Commencement CeremonyAftereveryonehasprocessedin,pleaserisefortheinvocationandremainstandingthroughoutthepresentationofthecolorsandplayingofthenationalanthem.

Honorarydegreesarethenawardedtoseveralcandidateswhowillbeannouncedatalaterdate.Oneofthehonorarydegreecandidateswillthenaddressthedegreecandidatesandtheirguests.

Next,thedeanofeachschoolintheUniversitypresentstothepresidentascrollcontainingthelistingofnamesofcandidatesfordegrees.FatherMcShanethenasksallcandidatesfordegreesandallfacultymemberstostand.Aftertheconferralofdegrees,allgraduatesaretoputtheirhoodsovertheirheads,dontheircaps,andbeseated.Onestudentrepresentativefromeachschoolwillbehoodedbythedeanandreceiveadiploma.Thedoctoralcandidatesareindividuallyrecognizedbythepresident.
