Cumberland 14, #21 Cumberlands 10

The Phoenix (2-3, 1-1 Mid-South Bluegrass) defeated a Top-25 opponent for the first time since posting a 24-21 win over No. 4 Lindsey Wilson in 2018. The Cumberland defense played exceptionally holding the potent Cumberlands offense to 10 points. The Patriots averaged 56.0 point-per-game and over 450 yards of offense heading into the match.

The Phoenix produced 333 yards of total offense with 179 yards coming on the ground and 154 threw the air. Dylan Carpenter tossed for two touchdowns on 12-of-23 for 154 yards and two touchdown passes. Taylor caught five passes for 62 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Treylon Sheppard had 18 carries for 79 yards. James Christian posted 11 rushes for 66 yards and Kaleb Witherspoon caught three passes for 63 yards.

The defense held the tenacious Cumberlands offense to just 227 yards of total offense. The Phoenix did a good job at getting off the field on third down holding the Patriots to 1-of-13 on third down. Champ Leddon notched 12 tackles while Travis Woodall had seven. Terron Smith had an interception in the second quarter.

Cumberlands quarterback, winner of two Mid-South Conference Offensive Player of the Weeks, was held to 10-of-23 passing for 116 yards and one interception. Devin Jones carried the ball 19 times for 79 yards and one score.

Cumberland opened the game with a big 14-play drive. The drive was extended after Cumberland was forced to punt to pin the Patriots back deep, but a roughing the kicker penalty gave CU an automatic first down. Four plays later on fourth and five, Carpen-ter swung it out wide to Taylor who made a man miss and went in for the score to give Cumberland an early 7-0 lead.

The Patriots answered with a quick 10-play drive The drive stalled in the red zone as Cumberland forced

three incompletions and the Patriots elected to kick a 32-yard field goal by Trip Holloway.

After several possessions on both sides stalled out, with five minutes left in the half, the Cumberlands finally cracked the scoreboard again after penalties brought the Patriots down the field. Jones punched in a five-yard rush to take a 10-7 lead at the half.

The Cumberland defense put a goose egg in the second half keeping the Patriots from scoring. The Cumberlands had an opportunity late in the third quarter as the Pats blocked a punt to start at the Cumberland 16-yard line. The Phoenix defense stood strong and held the Patriots to a field goal, but a roughing the kicker call put the Cumberlands at a first-and-goal opportunity.

The Phoenix defense again stood tall and forced the Patriots backwards for Tripp Holloway to attempt a 28-yarder. The try was pulled and missed left to keep the game at 10-7.

With three minutes left in the game, The Patriots held

Cumberland to punt from the Cumberlands 44-yard line. Matthew Pewitt punted a beauty inside the five-yard line with 3:41 to play.

Cumberlands ran the ball with Jones three straight times and the Pats were forced to punt it back with 2:03 left. Hafner caught the fair catch at the Phoenix 46-yard line and Carpenter and the Phoenix went to work.

First play of the drive, Carpenter threw a bullet to Witherspoon for 17-yards. After a Sheppard rush for six yards, Carpenter completed a pass to Hafner for 15 to the 16-yard line. Christina brought it eight yards closer rushing through Patriots defenders. Two plays later, Carpenter floated it to Taylor at the back pylon for the score with 10 seconds left and a 14-10 lead.

Cumberlands had one last shot and Nixon threw a bomb down the sideline, but overthrew his receiver and Cumberland pulled off the upset.

His triple option offense had the Phoenix runnig game going to the tuner of 185 yards per game which was the 22nd best mark in the NAIA. Mathis is 12-16 in his first three seasons at Cumberland. This past season, COVID shortened season played in the spring, Cumberland went 2-5 all against league opponents. Cumberland produced their first running back All-American in program history as Treylon Sheppard became the first 1,000-yard rusher since 2012. Mathis served as an assistant coach for 10 seasons at Shorter University when the Hawks started their program in the NAIA in 2005. He was the team’s offensive coordinator his last five years at Shorter, including during the transition to NCAA Division II. Mathis was a member of the Shorter staff for the inaugural season in 2005 and served five years as the team’s offensive line coach. The Hawks led the NAIA in rushing, won the Mid-South Conference championship and earned the program’s first-ever postseason playoff berth in 2008. Two players earned All-America honors and a dozen offensive linemen were named All-Mid-South during those five seasons.

He moved into the role of offensive coordinator from 2010-14, working with running backs for two seasons and quarterbacks and fullbacks the final three. Shorter ranked second nationally in rushing at 310.9 yards per game and posted 30.5 points per contest in 2010 and ranked third in the country in rushing (271.9), averaging 30.0 points per outing in 2011, the program’s last in the NAIA. Shorter ranked third in total offense in 2013, with fullback Bradley Moon leading the GSC and ranking sixth in rushing yards and quarterback Eric Dod-son ranking fifth in the conference in total offense. Shorter ranked third in the Gulf South and 22nd nationally in rushing in 2014 with 225.3 yards per contest.Mathis was the head coach the last two seasons at St. Francis High School in Alpharetta, Ga., posting a 2-8 record in 2016 with freshmen and sophomores making up 74 percent of the roster. He registered a 4-6 mark in 2017 with the Knights. Prior to his time at Shorter, Mathis worked four years at Trion City Schools in Trion, Ga., coaching the offensive line all four seasons as well as serving as de-fensive coordinator for two years. He was also the wrestling coach for two years and the golf coach for two seasons. Mathis earned his bachelor’s in History with a minor in Political Science from Georgia Southern in 1996 and received his master’s in Leadership from Shorter in 2010. A closer Look at the Tigers..A closer Look at the Tigers..• Campbellsville comes into the

game following a thrilling 31-28 victory over the University of Pikeville as they kept pace offensively with a team that was once receiving votes in the NAIA top 25.

• Josh Meglis has had a solid season thus far for Campbells-ville through the air. Meglis has thrown for 456 yards over two games and has also thrown four touchdowns to two intercep-tions.

• D’Anta Sipp is another player to watch for the Tigers as he has averaged 4.6 yards per carry and scored a touchdown in his four starts this season.

• The Cumberland offense should have a good chance to improve on their 10.4 ppg mark against a Tigers defense that gives up 46.5 points per game so far.
