Dear Friends,
The 2019 school year has started smoothly and I am very impressed by the way the students have returned to school focused and ready to grow and learn.
SHAPING OUR FUTURE
This year, our theme is “Shaping Our Future”. We live in a time of extraordinary change and in order to be prepared for today, and for the future, we need to ensure that the structures and environments are shaped in such a way that our students are well-supported in their preparation for all that life offers them.
Amidst the frenetic pace of modern existence, we need to not only help our students to be intellectually-prepared, but also physically, emotionally and spiritually-prepared, and in order for this to happen, we believe that a relationship with Jesus will help to shape their lives so that they can find peace and security in the midst of the chaotic revolution of the 21st century and be prepared for the future.
Throughout this week, at the start of the day, we have been considering our theme verse for this year, which encourages us to trust God’s plans, because they will prosper us, not harm us, and give us a future and a hope. (Jeremiah 29:11)
His plans will shape our future in a way that will empower us to meet all that is ahead of us, with peace in our hearts.
While it is a new year and we are looking forward, I do want to pause for a moment and reflect on the success of our 2018 HSC students.
2018 HSC SUCCESS
All students achieved great success and I congratulate each and every one of them.
Some highlights include the following:
82.47% of the students achieved above 70% (Band 4) across all subjects, with 14.14% achieving above 90% (Band 6).
There were 34 distinguished achievers (achieving above 90% in one or more subjects) which is 33% of the cohort.
Students studying English gained 25 Band 6’s. Jack Temelkovski (an accelerated Year 11 student) achieved 98% in Advanced English and came 11th in NSW, out of 26,172 students. All students achieved in Bands 4, 5 & 6, with 30% of students achieving Band 6.
100% of students in English Extension 1 achieved in Bands 5 & 6, with 62% of students achieving Band 6, and 100% of students achieved Band 6 in English Extension 2.
The HSIE Faculty performed well with Modern History, Legal Studies and Ancient History achieving 10.9%, 10.4% and 9.5% above state respectively.
100% of our HSC Music students achieved Band 5 or 6, and Aiden Smith came 3rd in NSW.
100% of our Biology, Legal Studies and Visual Arts students achieved in Bands 4, 5 & 6, with 25% of students achieving Band 6.
In Mathematics, 20% of students achieved Band 6, and in Mathematics Extension 1, 95% students achieved Bands 5 & 6.
Congratulations to all of our students for their success. I was excited to hear about the many students who achieved admission into the university courses of their choice, or to other institutions for further education, or those who have been awarded traineeships and apprenticeships, or permanent work.
2019 DEDICATION AND COMMISSIONING SERVICE
What a wonderful service we shared together, here, on our grounds, on B Field. Who would have thought that a playground could have been transformed into such an amazing space, where we could honour students and staff, and worship our God.
Congratulations to all the students who were commissioned as student leaders for 2019. I am excited about how the future will be shaped with these young leaders at the helm.
I would also like to honour and congratulate our staff for their service to the College over 15, 20, 30 and 35 years. These dedicated and faithful staff members are the foundation of our College and I thank God for their commitment to Him, to our students and to our community.
In the coming weeks, we will include a short feature on each staff member in our newsletter.
15 years: Adam Scott (Year 2 teacher) and Belinda Burgoyne (MS teacher & Year 8 Well-Being Advisor)20 years: Andrew Johnston (Director of Sport) and Jenny King (Front Office Manager)30 years: Maree Baker (Operations Manager)35 years: Graeme Evans (Deputy Principal)
Also, I would like to thank everyone who contributed to making the service the success it was, including the Executive Leadership Team, Student leaders, Set-up and Pack-up teams, Production team, Choir, Chapel Band and staff members leading these groups.
In conclusion, I encourage everyone to take time over the weekend to laugh together, learn together and spend time with God together, so that you are refreshed for the coming week.
Every blessingPam O’Dea (Principal)

KnowingGod
How would you describe what God is like? How can we get to know God?Is knowing God the same as knowing about God?How does knowing God change our lives?
JOHN 17:3 NKJV
BELIEVING IN GOD
DISCUSSION:
DEFINITION:Knowing God is about understanding that He wants to have a real friendship with us. His love for us is so great that he sent His Son Jesus, to die for us, so that we could be in relationship with Him forever.

Now at the beginning of the year we would like to encourage students to bring back all remaining overdue text books and library books by Friday February 15, 2019. After this time charges will be added to accounts for any unreturned books. We appreciate your help in this matter.

UNIFORM SHOP NEWSOPENING HOURS (during school terms)
MONDAYS: 8:00AM – 11:00AMTUESDAYS: 8:00AM – 11:00AMTHURSDAYS: 1:00PM – 4:00PM
Blazers: It is time to place your order for blazers. This is the only item we do not stock all year round. Our supplier Trutex supplies blazers to a lot of schools so to ensure we get the quantity and sizes we need at our 4 uniform shops, all orders need to be in by February 18th. Please note: your child must be fitted in the shop before an order can be placed. We have 2 styles: unisex and women’s (a more fitted style).
Shoes: I am happy to report that we sold more shoes this year than any other year! We are now seeing repeat customers coming in as they found such good value and quality in the Roc branded shoe styles we stock.
The Hybrid and Aero style for boys have been popular due to the rubber sole for playground play and the Lauren and Larrikin styles for girls, for the lightweight comfort. Purchasing shoes at the uniform shop is convenient and you can be sure that they are in line with the school uniform policy.
Second-hand: We continue to sell many items each week and process the bags that have been brought in for processing to ensure that there is always a lot of items on our racks for you to grab a bargain. The smart shoppers think a season ahead and seeing how many winter items are currently available, it is time to start thinking what your child will need in Term 2. A huge thankyou to those families who are supporting the school and helping other school families by dropping in uniform items to be sold via the shop or making a donation to our welfare boxes. If you would like to volunteer and help with the processing of items, please email me.
Consignment forms are available at the shop or by downloading from the SPCC webpage via the ‘uniform shop” tab. At the end of each term you will receive credit vouchers for any items of yours that have sold and these are like “cash” and can be used in the uniform shop or swapped with another parent for cash. If you no longer have children enrolled a credit to your bank account will be applied. When purchasing or selling second-hand items from any of the 4 SPCC uniform shops you can be assured that you are purchasing good quality and correct uniform items as our processors follow the SPCC Second-Hand Policy and this ensures that standard of uniform at St Philip’s remains high. Any questions or concerns regarding uniform items, please see Bridget in the shop or email [email protected].
