individual talents. Tonight this ensemble will perform several Sun Ra compositions; and originals inspired by the composer, keyboardist, bandleader, philosopher, poet, and self-claimed extraterrestial from Saturn.

Elliott Levin / Brian Marsala (of John Zorn)@ Seven Stones Café (8-11:30) All-Ageswith: Elliott (sax, flute, poetry), Brian (piano)

Elliott is a ubiquitous personage in our City of

Brotherly Love; a Philly-born and based musician and poet. Elliot studied musical and literary composition at the U. of Oregon. He did further study with Michael Guerra of the Phila. Orchestra; pianist/composer/poet Cecil Taylor; flutist/composer Claire Polin; Philly sax legend Odean Pope. Elliot has performed with Cecil Taylor Ensemble, Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes, New Ghost, Interplay, Talking Free Be-Bop, Odean’s Saxophone Choir, Don Preston’s Akashic Ensemble, Calvin Weston’s Big Tree and many other groups. He has collaborated with poets John Sinclair and David Amram. His milieu is the integral interplay of language and music, and the music of language. It comes as no surprise that he has been inspired by innovators like Frank Zappa, Captain Beefheart and Sun Ra.

Brian Marsala returns for his second JazzByNight appearance with Elliot @ JazzByNight’s 7 Stones Café. Exactly one year ago, you would have found him performing at the Village Vanguard in NYC with Christian McBride and drummer Kenny Wollison. Avant-garde and experimental would be appropriate adjectives. Brian is a mainstay/collaborator in various musical projects with the great John Zorn. He will play solo the first half of the first and sec-ond sets at 7 Stones: the second halves of those sets with Brian. They will perform together for the third set. www.elliottlevin.com

Bruce Anthony@ Pairings Cigar Bar (8-11:45)One of our favorite musicians – and people. He is highly-talented solo singer/guitarist. Bruce explores the spaces between the notes… he leaves a few out in the cold, and then picks them up later in a stylized tech-nique of octaves and chord progressions.

He covers lots of territory – Beatles/English Invasion to Louie Armstrong/Jazz Stan-dards. From neighboring Wallingford, he now lives in The First State. Bruce performed at our first JazzByNight and at several more since 2003.
