DISSECTING THE EPSOM CLASSIC CONTENDERSThirteen fillies remain in contention for Friday’s Gr.1 Oaks. Eight of them are trained by Aidan O’Brien, who has trained six previous winners, starting with Shahtoush (Alzao) 20 years ago.

Marcel Bouccas and the Gr.1 1,000 Guineas fourth, although by the miler Dubawi, is a daughter of the Monsun mare Rumh, a ten-furlong Listed winner who won twice over two miles. She should get the Oaks trip on pedigree, as should Give And Take (Cityscape), the Gr.3 Musidora Stakes winner who is out of a Montjeu full-sister to the Gr.1 Irish Derby, Gr.1 Coronation Cup and Gr.1 Ascot Gold Cup winner Fame And Glory.

A victory by Sea Of Class would be a wonderful feather in the cap for Razza del Velino’s marvellous broodmare Holy Moon. The Hernando mare, a middle-distance Listed winner herself, has produced six previous Stakes horses – the 2012 Gr.2 Oaks d’Italia winner Cherry Collect, the 2013 Oaks d’Italia and Gr.1 Premio Lydia Tesio winner Charity Line, the 2014 Oaks d’Italia and Gr.1 Premio Lydia Tesio winner Final Score, the 2016 Gr.3 victrix Wordless, the 2016 Listed-placed Magic Mystery and last year’s Gr.2 Derby Italiano runner-up Back On Board. Sea Of Class, winner of the Listed Fillies’ Trial at Newbury, is by Sea The Stars, arguably a better sire than those of any of this chesnut’s older half-siblings.

CLASSIC COLTSAt the five-day stage, 14 colts are still in the running for the Gr.1 Derby, but Galileo does not have such a stranglehold with his sons as he does with his daughters on Friday. He is the sire of just three of the possible contenders, though his sons New Approach (1), Frankel (3) and Intello (1) are also represented and two of the entries are out of daughters of his.

Aidan O’Brien has half of the 14-strong field at this stage, including the Galileo trio of the four-times Group-placed Delano Roosevelt, out of the dual Gr.1-winning juvenile Again (Danehill Dancer), the Gr.3-placed Listed winner Kew Gardens, out of the Gr.1-winning two-year-old Chelsea Rose (Desert King), and last season’s Gr.3 winner The Pentagon, a son of the Gr.1 Prix Saint-Alary winner Vadawina (Unfuwain). He also has the three Frankel contenders; the dual Gr.3 winner Nelson, out of the Gr.1 Irish Oaks winner Moonstone (Dalakhani); last year’s Gr.2 winner Rostropovich, a half-brother to Gr.1 winner Zoffany; and the Gr.2 Dante Stakes third Zabriskie, a half-brother to multiple Gr.1 winners Bago and Maxios, out of a half-sister to Gr.1 winner Denebola. Ballydoyle’s leading contender, of course, is the unbeaten Gr.1 2,000 Guineas hero Saxon Warrior, a son of the

Gr.1-winning Galileo mare Maybe and by Deep Impact, winner of seven Gr.1 races from ten furlongs to two miles.

Hazapour (Shamardal), who beat four of these in the Gr.3 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial, is out of a 12-furlong Listed winner and half-sister to the dual Gr.1 Derby winner Harzand, so should have no problems with the trip. Neither should Young Rascal (Intello), winner of the Gr.3 Chester Vase over an extended 12 furlongs and out of a triple Listed-winning miler who stayed ten furlongs. The Gr.1 2,000 Guineas third Masar is by Derby winner New Approach and, although his dam won the Gr.2 UAE Derby over nine and a half furlongs, she was unplaced on her four starts over ten or further.

Roaring Lion was staying on well at the end of the Gr.2 Dante Stakes and is by Kitten’s Joy, a Gr.1 winner over ten and 12 furlongs, out of a mare who was Gr.1-placed over ten. Farhh, the sire of the Chester Vase runner-up Dee Ex Bee, was never tried beyond an extended ten furlongs, though is from a good German middle-distance family, and the colt’s dam is an unraced full-sister to Dubai Millennium. Gr.3 winner Sevenna Star has already won twice over

The triple Gr.1 winner and A$4.8m earner Jameka (Myboycharlie; Lot 1606) was added to the lineup at the beginning of the month, and was joined more recently by the Charge Forward mare Courgette (Lot 1670), dam of last year’s Gr.1 Golden Slipper and Gr.1 Moir Stakes winner She Will Reign and in foal to I Am Invincible. Three-year-old Torvill (Not A Single Doubt; Lot 1669), a Listed winner and a close second in March’s Gr.1 Surround Stakes, is also among the supplementary catalogue.

“We are overwhelmed with the support that the vendors of Australasia have given the sale again this year,” Magic Millions Managing Director Barry Bowditch said. “This sale has produced so many elite results for both vendors and buyers – the dams of current day stars Winx, Trapeze Artist, Estijaab, Levendi, Shoals and Hiyaam were all purchased here, providing buyers with immediate returns on investment.”

Seven horses achieved seven-figure prices at last year’s sale, headed by Burke Bloodstock’s dual Group-winning Commands mare Gregers, in foal for the first time to Written Tycoon. She was bought by Riyue Trading for A$1,750,000. Book 1 of the sale, which had 979 catalogued lots, achieved an 84 per cent clearance rate, with an average sale price of A$148,020 and a median of A$80,000.

RACING ROUND-UPBRITISH AND IRISH MAIDENS

THIS WEEK’S MAIDENS WHO CAUGHT THE EYENovice races at Ayr have thrown up some useful animals over the past few years, with northern yards especially having some clout nationally these day, and More Than This (Dutch Art) enjoyed the good to firm ground on his debut, coming through powerfully after having to be got going early on and going three lengths clear by the line. It is difficult to evaluate the form, as the only one of the six to have run failed to act on the ground most likely, but more should be heard of the winner.

Legends Of War (Scat Daady) cost no less than 900,000gns at the breeze-up sale, but he has started to pay that sum back in good time, taking a valuable EBF novice event over six on good to firm ground at Yarmouth, its first running, by four lengths from the favourite, San Donato (Lope De Vega), who cost a mere 500,000gns. Oisin Murphy was determined to teach the winner something and held him up, but he showed a decent turn of speed, despite being green. Given that means he should improve aplenty, he looks to have a bright future and will presumably head to the Gr.2 Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot, or perhaps the Gr.2 July Stakes if John Gosden thinks pitching him into the cauldron may come a bit too soon, though he might be able to fit in another run before then.

The EBF novice over six at Goodwood on Thursday was held on good to firm ground pretty much, as the rain came and then softened the track. Mutawaffer (Kodiac) had run very respectably at Ascot on debut over six and he built on that, showing plenty of speed and making all to score by over two lengths. It is no surprise that trainer Charles Hills is thinking of bringing him back to five for the Gr.2 Norfolk Stakes.

The ground was good to firm over the sharp five at Catterick, not a smart track, but surrounded by good yards in the North

ten furlongs and is by the sprinter-miler Redoute’s Choice, though his dam, by Galileo, was a Gr.3 winner over 14 furlongs and has produced three previous progeny who stayed well.

The Listed Lingfield Derby Trial winner Knight To Behold is from a Classic family. By Sea The Stars, he is a half-brother to a two-mile Japanese Gr.3 winner and is out of a full-sister to the Derby third Let The Lion Roar and half-sister to the Gr.1 St Leger winner Millenary, who won ten other Pattern races up to two and a quarter miles.

Riding of Yorkshire where the thoroughbred was largely created, and Second Generation (Dawn Approach) is likely to head to the Gr.2 Queen Mary Stakes after she set a good comparative time in an EBF novice and scalped her opponents by six lengths. They may not have been too good, but she still looks pretty lively.

Young trainer Amy Murphy made a splash during the National Hunt season and, soon to move to a larger yard in Newmarket, she has a useful two-year-old on her hands in Kapono (Kuroshio). Third at Brighton on debut in a race that is working out well – the two ahead of him that day have won – he came from midfield in a novice auction over five at Goodwood on dead ground on Friday and had to overcome quite a bump four out to get to the front, which he did a furlong out before putting over three lengths between him and his rivals by the line. In second was Big Boots (Society Rock), who has plenty of ability and won on his debut but was again too keen as he was on his second start to do himself justice. The winner may well head for Royal Ascot, perhaps the Listed Windsor Castle Stakes the suitable target.

The ground was softening quite rapidly from good to firm in the rain at Haydock Park on Friday, officially good by the time an EBF novice over six was run, but that did not bother Arthur Kitt (Camelot), who looked ever better as he went and won by over two lengths without having to be asked any serious question. It is no surprise he is to be aimed at the Listed Chesham Stakes by Tom Dascombe and he looks just the sort for the race.

The EBF juvenile novice stakes over five on firm ground at Bath on Friday evening was probably not that strong an event, but K Club (Kodiac) did well to overcome a tardy start and a bump to be near the front of the sextet before long and go on to win by over four lengths. Presumably she will be a prospect for the Gr.2 Queen Mary Stakes.

One to WatchNATALIE’S JOY 2yo filly by Lope De Vegaex Semaphore (Zamindar)Bred by Moyns Park Estate and Stud Ltd

Quite a few juveniles especially could have qualified to be the One to Watch, with some very expensive purchases strutting their stuff, but the column is going slightly left field this week. Victories by six lengths by two-year-olds on debut tend to be achieved on very soft ground, but the ground was good at Goodwood on Saturday for the EBF novice over six, and the third and fourth had shown they were not useless in their previous starts, all of which makes Natalie’s Joy (Lope De Vega) look a distinctly useful recruit, especially since she was a bit keen early and then green when she hit the front a furlong out. She has the turn of foot to play in a higher grade by the look of it and one assumes she will head to the Gr.3 Albany Stakes next. She was bought for 35,000gns by Mark Johnston, who prowls round the ring looking for relative bargains, and he looks to have got one here.

Brian Meehan’s two-year-olds are well known for improving from their debuts and Boa Nova (Zebedee) was another to be slowly away on his first start in the EBF novice over an extended five later in the evening at Bath and he too had an interrupted passage as he made his way forward. He grabbed the lead inside the final furlong, showing commendable courage, and won with a fair bit in hand after showing a good turn of speed. He should hold his own in a higher grade and has the physique to develop.

The first maiden over seven in Ireland at Leopardstown on good to firm ground on Friday evening produced a winner of which Jim Bolger thinks plenty, which is a pretty fair recommendation. Bold Approach (Dawn Approach) was close to the fore in plenty of time and finally went on inside the final furlong to win like a horse that a mile will suit before too long, though he looks to have enough speed for seven for the moment. He is unlikely to come for something like the Chesham, but the Gr.2 Futurity Stakes could well be a port of call.

Another possible to head for the Albany alongside the One to Watch, and doubtless better fancied as she is trained by Aidan O’Brien and is a relation to Galileo, Sea The Stars, etc., is Just Wonderful (Dansili). That is a dangerous name to call a racehorse, but she looked pretty good in the EBF fillies’ maiden over six on good to firm ground at the Curragh on Saturday, though she had to battle to see off Lethal Promise (Invincible Spirit) by a neck, who had the benefit of a previous run. O’Brien said he had done less with her than he usually does, so the usual improvement in Ballydoyle juveniles can certainly be expected, and it will be necessary. Where she goes may depend on the Listed Marble Hill Stakes winner Fairyland (Kodiac), though Ballydoyle could of course run both.

Embour (Acclamation) ran with promise on his only start at two, which was followed by a setback, and he needed his first run this season rather badly. He gained his first win on dead ground at Salisbury on Saturday night in a maiden over six, making all and never having to be asked too serious a question. He should make a decent handicapper at least.

The benefit of the new barrier trials at Dundalk look to have been demonstrated by the victory of Indigo Balance (Invincible Spirit), one of nine newcomers in a field of 13, in the Tally-Ho Stud EBF maiden over six at the Curragh on Sunday, as he was very professional, whereas several of his rivals were a bit green and several actually looked as if they wanted further already. That said, there is no guarantee he would not beat any of his rivals next time out, as he looks pretty useful and more should be heard of him.

Lucius Tiberius (Camelot) is not a Ballydoyle star, but he was the handy winner of the EBF maiden over ten furlongs that concluded the Curragh card and he could end up being a Stakes performer, probably via a handicap such as the King George V at Royal Ascot, as further would suit.

The first division of the novice auction over six on good ground at Windsor yesterday was not that hot a contest, but it was won quite well by debutant Seductive Moment (Shamardal) and he could be one to work his way up the ranks. The second division was won in a quicker time from a bad draw by another debutant in Urban Icon (Cityscape), who was professional to get over to a more favoured position and then go on to score by over three lengths. Out of a Shamardal mare, he is not necessarily a type for Royal Ascot and Richard Hannon considers him a long-term project, which does not exclude heading to east Berkshire with him, and Hannon certainly considers him a Stakes horse of the future.

Gordian Troeller, still the source of a good horseSophie P’s 14-1 upset victory over Madam Dancealot (Sir

Prancealot) in Saturday’s Gr.1 Gamely Stakes was as thrilling as it was close. Stalking the early pace, she found

room and kicked home hard to catch the leaders. Madam Dancealot mounted her patented deep-stretch rally from last place, but Sophie P bravely battled and came out victorious in a head-bob.

The five-year-old daughter of Bushranger was making only her second start for trainer Jim Cassidy and owner Deron Pearson of DP racing. Her debut saw her finish sixth in the Gr.2 Royal Heroine Stakes and this win was her first Stakes victory in 18 starts and meant her earnings rose to just over $250,000.

Gordian Troeller selected Sophie P at last year’s Tattersalls December Mare sale and later signed the 160,000gns ticket for her on behalf of DP racing. He had followed her career and noted that, although exposed as a four-year-old, she was on an upward curve in form and her style would suit California perfectly.

The result also proved testament to the enduring partnership between trainer Jim Cassidy and his bloodstock agent Gordian Troeller, a relationship some 20 years in the making and one that has yielded some of the best European imports that California has seen.

I myself owe a great deal of my career to the pair, as I began working for Troeller at the 1999 Tattersalls Horses in Training Sale, where he was buying horses for Cassidy. Two years later, that role led me to California to become assistant trainer for Cassidy and we enjoyed four years together, winning almost every Stakes race on the turf in the Sunshine State.

One horse from the early days that I will always hold dear is Ocean Sound. Gordian purchased the two-year-old son of Mujadil from Barry Hills at Tattersalls and when I joined up with him at Santa Anita he had just finished fourth in an allowance race that had been rained off the turf course and held on the dirt. This performance prompted Cassidy to run him in the Gr.2 San Rafael Stakes and his fourth there sent us all on our travels along the Derby trail. He went on to finish second to Windward Passage in the Gr.3 Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park and third behind Harlan’s Holiday and Booklet in the Gr.1 Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland before taking his berth in the 134th Gr.1 Kentucky Derby.

It was quite an achievement for the winner of a novice race at Ayr and, for me walking over with him beneath the twin spires, it was unforgettable. Ocean Sound marked the start of a new era for Troeller and, with the support of Cassidy and his main clients Jim Ford and Deron Pearson, he provided a never-ending supply of European imports that allowed us to go to war against turf giants like Bobby Frankel and Neil Drysdale.

Gr.1 winners like Ticker Tape and Singhalese led the way, followed by a cast that included Katdogawn, Steelaninch, Star Vega and On The Acorn. More recently, the two have produced Graded Stakes winners such as Passified and Prize Exhibit, the latter returning to Tattersalls last year for the mares sale and realising 750,000gns.

Troeller’s ability to source European horses for the United States dates back before Cassidy and started in the early 1990s and his long-time association with leading racing syndicate Team Valor and its principle Barry Irwin. Troeller and Irwin have worked diligently together for nearly 30 years and their roll of honour speaks for itself. One of the biggest successes came early on with horse called The Deputy, whom Troeller purchased twice, firstly as a yearling for the late John Hills and then again when he acquired him privately for Irwin’s Team Valor. The son of Petardia won the Gr.1 Santa Anita Derby for trainer Janine Sahadi.

More Gr.1 success soon followed as the pair teamed up to find Gitano Hernando, winner of the Goodwood Stakes on the dirt for trainer Marco Botti, a relationship that currently finds itself with one of my own yearling purchases, Capla Temptress, winner of the Gr.1 Natalma Stakes last year in Canada and a close fourth in the recent Gr.1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches at Longchamp. I purchased the daughter of Loup De Vega for €26,000 for Botti at the Goffs Orby Yearling Sale. Troeller subsequently acquired her after her second start for Botti and she went on to finish third in the Gr.3 Sweet Solera stakes before heading to Woodbine for Gr.1 glory. Troeller has sourced horses from all over the globe for Team Valor; in South Africa he found the Gr.1-winning mares Ipi Tombe and Crimson Palace and a trip to Italy allowed him to find Gr.1 Woodbine Mile winner Becrux.

With a Gr.1 winner this weekend and a recent Gr.3 double by way of Belvoir Bay’s San Simeon Stakes win and Queen Blossom’s Santa Barbara Stakes victory, its safe to say that Troeller is still very much the source of a good horse.

from 77 runners and 86 foals. The winner’s dam Southern Gift (Taiki Shuttle) won once at the provincial racecourse of Sonoda and delivered four winners from four previous runners, all on the NRA circuit. The best of them, Gold Brother (Time Paradox), won 12 races, including a minor Stakes.

Southern Gift has a two-year-old filly by Espoir City.

MEISHO TEKKON (Jpn), 3c, Manhattan Cafe – A Shin Velocity (Lemon Drop Kid) O: Yoshio Matsumoto, B: Shimoyashiki Bokujo, T: Yoshitada Takahashi ¥16,000,000 Hokkaido Select Sale by Yoshio Matsumoto

Meisho Tekkon (Manhattan Cafe), who just missed finishing in the top three in the Gr.2 Kyoto Shimbun Hai, relished the step down in trip from 2200 to 1800m when landing his third win in six starts in the Listed Shirayuri Sho on Sunday at Kyoto. The colt, a bit keen in the early stages, set a fast pace (59s for the first 1000m) and stayed on strongly to win by three lengths from the filly Salacia (Deep Impact), returning a good speed rating of 102.7. He is the second winner from two foals out of A Shin Velocity (Lemon Drop Kid), a durable racemare who collected 13 wins in 58 starts from three to five on the NRA circuit. The second dam Vermont Girl (Mi Cielo) produced six others winners in Japan and is a half-sister to the GRr.1 Breeders’ Cup Sprint hero Artax (Marquetry).

A Shin Velocity has a yearling filly by Gold Allure and foaled in March a filly by Black Tide.

ARUSHA (Jpn), 3f, Deep Impact – Zazu (Tapit) O: Sunday Racing, B: Northern Racing, T: Kazuo Fujisawa

The Gr.3-placed Arusha (Deep Impact) overcame the seemingly impossible stall 18 and cruised home in the fillies’ conditions race over 1400m on Sunday at Tokyo. She travelled close to the lead and never gave up, despite the demanding pace. The grey could manage a Group win sooner or later. She is the second foal and first winner out of the dual Gr.1 scorer Zazu (Tapit), who joined Northern Racing following her $2.1million purchase at the 2012 Keeneland Novermber Sale. Zazu, a full-sister to the Gr.2 winner Flashback, has teamed up with Deep Impact twice more, producing a two-year-old colt and a yearling filly, purchased for ¥72m by Riichi Kondo at the JRHA Select Foal Sale.

She visited Daiwa Major in 2017.

TOSEN ROSARIO (Ire), 3f, Galileo – Dance For Fun (Anabaa) O: Takaya Shimakawa, B: Dance For Fun Syndicate, T: Yasuhito Tamura

Tosen Rosario (Galileo) made the running and won easily on her fourth start. The filly, unplaced twice on turf, relished the switch to dirt and, following a second place at Niigata, dominated the maiden over 1600m at Tokyo. She is a full-sister to Lush Lashes, who landed three Gr.1s from a mile to 12 furlongs, and the Stakes-placed Claudio Monteverdi. Their dam Dance For Fun (Anabaa) won once from two starts and has delivered three other winners, including the durable gelding Scottish Glen (Kyllachy), who landed his 12th win last Thursday as a 12-year-old at Lingfield. Dance For Fun has been mated six times to Galileo and has produced five fillies. Two of them, the unraced Desire Moi and Best Friend, were sold as broodmare prospects respectively for 220,000 guineas and €320,000.

GOLD QUEEN (Jpn), 3f, Sinister Minister – Southern Gift (Taiki Shuttle) O: Mitsuhiko Kato, B: Urakawa Dohi Bokujo, T: Masanori Sakaguchi

On Saturday at Kyoto, the Listed Aoi Stakes, the most important event for the three-year-old sprinters at this time of the year, returned a 29/1 upset, thanks to the filly Gold Queen (Sinister Minister). She was sent to the front from the start and battled gamely to score by one and a quarter lengths from Love Kampf (Shonan Kampf) and Travesura (Dream Journey), who finished in a dead heat for second. She clocked a fast time of 1.08, recording her third win in five starts and returned a three-digit speed figure (101.7). Her sire won the Gr.1 (then) Blue Grass Stakes and has compiled a decent stud career. He is responsible for three Group winners, all on dirt, and Gold Queen is from his seventh and best crop. Sinister Minister has had 35 winners (26 of them at two)

The US-bred Jasper Win recorded his first victory against previous winners on Saturday at Tokyo in the conditions race over 1400m on dirt. His sire Jimmy Creed has two Group winners in his first crop of 87 foals and his fee is $15,000. The useful Jasper Win is the second foal out of Chick Flick (Tapit), who just failed to win in two juvenile starts. She has already produced the multiple winner and Canadian Stakes-placed Flowmotion (Warrior’s Reward). The second dam Not Enough Time (Freud) is a half-sister to the Gr.1 winner Behaving Badly (Pioneering).

Chick Flick has a two-year-old colt by Cross Traffic and a yearling filly by Medal Count.

GRANDIOSE (Jpn), 3c, Rulership – Cherir (Sunday Silence) O: Sunday Racing, B: Northern Farm, T: Yasuhito Tamura

The odds-on favourite Grandiose (Rulership) missed the boat for the Gr.1 Japanese Derby, but has plenty of time in front of him. He strolled home much more easily than the margin (three quarters of a length) suggests in the conditions race over 2400m on Saturday at Tokyo. The big colt (530 kilos) could turn into an interesting prospect for the second half of the season. His dam Cherir (Sunday Silence) won four times and has produced six other winners, topped by the late-maturing Mousquetaire (Mayano Top Gun), who won the Gr.2 Meguro Kinen at five.

Cherir has a yearling filly by Rulership and visited Eishin Flash last season.

ROCHEFORT (Jpn), 3c, King Kamehameha – Ambroise (French Deputy) O: Sunday Racing, B: Northern Racing, T: Tetsuya Kimura

Rochefort (King Kamehameha), much improved from his debut, found an open road in front of him in the last furlong and won the maiden over 2000m on Sunday at Tokyo easily. His dam Ambroise (French Deputy) won the Gr.3 Hakodate Nisai Stakes at two and ran second in the championship event, the Gr.1 Hanshin Juvenile Fillies. She produced the fast racemare Kona Brewers (King Kamehameha), a minor Stakes winner over 1200m and 1400m, and the useful five-year-old Theodore (Harbinger), who has won five times and earned more than ¥88m.

Ambroise has a two year old colt by Harbinger and a yearling colt by Rulership.
