PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

NEW JERSEY 121st STATE TOURNAMENT

5

The 2018 shooting year is slated to be another great chance to show off your shooting skills, not only at the competitions sponsored by the New Jersey State Trapshooting Association, but also for the competitions being offered at various clubs throughout the state. Please refer to this program for some of these other events. These competitions are your chance to compete against yourself, your buddies and the All Americans who may be in attendance.

As the president of the New Jersey State Trapshooting Association and the North Jersey Gun Club, I believe I can speak for both of these organizations, as well as the clubs around the state, in saying that a lot of work goes into running the clubs and the events that are enjoyed by all. I cordially ask each of you try and get involved in your member club along with the state association. You don’t have to spend hours; little acts mean a lot. If you can’t donate your time on a consistent basis, maybe you can lend your expertise to help a new shooter, the state association or another club.

I challenge each of you to get acquainted with the individuals who are respon-sible for running each club you visit. Don’t forget to thank them for the their efforts to make your shoot as pleasurable as possible.

At this time, I speak for all the members of the New Jersey State Trapshooting Association and our affiliate clubs throughout the state, in thanking Rudy Torlini, Secretary and Treasurer of the NJSTA for his loyal and untiring efforts; he is indispensable and irreplaceable! Should you see him, please take a moment to thank him personally for all the work he does.

Let’s make this shooting year great!

Respectfully submitted,

Craig Gasparine President, nJstA

TROPHY HIERARCHY FOR ALL ZONE SHOOTSATA trophies are higher than N.J. or zone trophies. All open trophies are lesser. If a shooter qualifies for more than one trophy, that shooter must notify the Tournament Of-fice within 15 minutes after that event’s last scores have been posted as to which trophy he/she desires to take or shoot-off for.

Shooters may declare only one category: i.e. lady, sub-junior, junior, veteran, senior vet-eran. A shooter may no longer declare, for example, lady veteran. (Note: this new rule does not apply to chair shooters.)

Any shooter who is tied for event champion may shoot off/carry over for the champion trophy. If the shooter fails in the championship trophy shoot off/carry over and has de-clared a Special Category, the shooter will fall back to their declared category.

Any shooter who has declared a Special Category at classification and whose score qualified him/her for any trophy in his/her declared category will compete for the cat-egory trophy and not for place, class or yardage group.

A category shooter whose score does not qualify him/her for his/her category may com-pete for place, class or yardage group.

REGISTRATION CERTIFICATIONThis certifies that the New Jersey State Trapshooting Association has been authorized to hold registered shoots. Amateur Trapshooting Association Rules will govern these shoots and the scores will be included in the Official Records.

Jack was born in Brooklyn NY in 1945. He grew up in East Brunswick, NJ and spent his K-llth grade years there. His family moved to Point Pleasant Beach, NJ in 1963 and that is where Jack graduated high school. After high school, he attended a trade apprenticeship for Iron Workers following in his father’s footsteps. Jack was an active ironworker through the mid-90’s and became an entrepreneur in 1981 when he established Point Lobster Company in Point Pleasant Beach. The busi-ness started as a lobster wholesale distributor with one pickup truck and 1employee and now has over 40 employ-ees and supplies lobsters and seafood to local restaurants and supermarkets from Cape May to Philadelphia to North Jersey. His business is well-known to the locals and sum-

mer tourists that enjoy freshly cooked lobster. Jack started trapshooting in 1967 when an ironworker introduced him to shooting at the Staten Island Gun Club. He was self-taught, but always sought advice and tips from other experienced shooters. He attended two of Kay Ohye’s clinics and has been an active trapshooter for over 50 years. His business development limited his shooting

time to spring, fall and winter but he continued to pursue his passion of the sport. Jack is an avid outdoorsman, which started in his early childhood years when he became fascinated with fresh water fishing on Farrington Lake in East Brunswick. He grew up surrounded by farms and woods. He observed hunters, their dogs and the sounds of their gunshots which kindled his desire to start hunting. Although no one in his immediate family had an interest in hunting, Jack got his hunting license the first year he was eligible, at the age of 14. Jack is still an avid hunter and enjoys duck hunting with his son, son-in-law and grandsons. He is also a big game hunter using gun and bow & arrow. He visits Texas to hunt deer, wild boar, turkey and small game. Jack’s other outdoor hobby is big game salt water fishing for marlin, tuna and sail-fish. He currently runs a 1988, 37’ refurbished Bertram out of Point Pleasant Beach and is partners on a sport fishing boat in Costa Rica. He is currently on the Board of Trustees for the Manasquan River Marlin and Tuna Club and has won multiple big game fishing awards. He has fished for big game in Bermuda, Venezuela, Mexico, Florida and Costa Rica. Jack has two children and three grandchildren. His son, John, is the manager of Point Lobster Company and his daughter, Allison, is a family practice physician. His lifelong partner, Laurie, has supported his trapshooting career and he continues to try to spark her interest in practicing and joining him on the line. Jack has nursed a number of injuries over the last few years but the trapshooting fire is not out yet. He is encouraged and inspired to continue to shoot ATA registered targets, teach his grandchildren this sport and maintain the many, many friendships he has developed through the years.

NEW JERSEY 121st STATE TOURNAMENT

Dennis was born in Riverside New Jersey in 1951 to Frank and Anna Lott older brother Frank Jr. and sister Florence. His wife Fran and he have 4 children and 7 Grandchildren. He graduated from Riverside High School. He became a union carpenter for 41 years, retired and then worked for Freeman Decorating for another 7. Guns always fascinated him because his father carried a 38 Smith and Wesson as his side arm while working for Brinks. While growing up, his dad would take him to his aunts farm behind Nixon” General store in Tabernacle to watch uncle Abner shoot pistol and then shotguns. They would shoot old chicken eggs found in the barn. One person would throw the egg in the air and his dad would annihilate it. As he got older and was able to get a hunting license,

they would go to the farm and by this time his uncle Abner had bought a clay target thrower. He had a 12 gauge L.C. Smith double barrel shotgun that he let him shoot. He only hit one but it was dead center with a black puff, nothing but dust. He had a heck of a time hitting them but it was fun. 20 years later, working with a group of guys who only talked about hunting, they invited him to a friend’s farm to shoot some clay targets. He thought it was great! While talking to his friend, Greer Gaskill, he told him of his shooting adventure at the farm and he suggested they take a ride to Pine Belt Sportsmen’s Club to shoot regulation trap on Wednesday evening. Dennis had bought a Remington 870 from a neighbor and he took it along. At his first attempt he broke about 15, but enjoyed it. They went back for several consecutive weeks. Greer stopped but Dennis continued to shoot. He would hit some just like the ones he hit with uncle Ab’s double barrel. Greer lent him a Browning Broadway over and under trap gun and he found that he could hit in the 20’s out of 25. His friend Jimmy told Dennis that his mom, Pat Mannery, and her friend Ed Marge shot trap and wanted him to meet them at Pine Valley Gun Club one Saturday in May. He showed up with his 870 and some shells in an Acme bag. They were shooting registered trap where you shoot 100 targets. He shot an 80 which was a big feat for a new shooter. They took him into the clubhouse and “Toots” Tindall signed him up to shoot registered trap. In June at the New Jersey State Shoot he broke his first 25. After shooting all over the country for the last 25 years he has registered 150,000 targets and gone through 8 different trap guns. His wife Fran shoots occasionally and when they went to Las Vegas to get married they took their guns and each won an event at the Las Vegas Gun Club and received a pair of beautiful silver belt buckles. Dennis is a life member of the ATA, NRA, Pine Belt Sportsmen’s Assoc, past club President and life member of Pine Valley Gun Club and 13th generation from the Mayflower. On any nice day you’ll find him at the gun club.

GUN FOR HIRE SHOTGUN-SHOOTOUT OPTIONGun For Hire has graciously donated a new Remington 870 Classic Trap, 12 Gauge Target Shotgun to the NJSTA to be awarded to the winner of a 3 day, 3 event option, subject to the random drawing of 50 names who will shoot off for this amazing prize on Friday following the day’s events (7-9) of the New Jersey State Championships. To be eligible for the drawing and shoot off, shooting participants must play the “Gun For Hire Shootout Option” offered during qualifying handicap events 2, 5, and/or 8. A $10.00 fee will be required for each of the Shotgun-Shootout options you may wish to participate in. It is not mandatory for any- one to play the option in all of the qualifying events. Each day a shooter plays the Shotgun-Shootout option his/her name will be entered into the random drawing. The maximum entry for any one shooter is three. A participant is only permitted one spot in the shoot off. If a shooter’s name is drawn more than once the second and third selection will be discarded and another name will be drawn until 50 different shooters have been selected. If a total of 50 dif- ferent shooters do not play this option during the 3 qualifying events, then all of the individual shooters that played the option at least once will shoot off.

Shooters that have been selected to shoot off by random draw will shoot from his/her handicap yardage that he/she shot from on the first day that he/she opted to play this Shotgun-Shootout option. If during a preliminary event a participating shooter was pe-nalized for a lack of the minimum targets required and achieves the necessary targets and is reduced to a non-penalty yardage, he/she will then shoot from their reduced handicap yardage during this Shotgun-Shoot off. The selected shooters will shoot off based on the yardage guide- lines stated above and will shoot two targets from each of the five posts. Ties will continue to be shot off in this format until one winner is crowned. The winner will be presented with the aforementioned shotgun subject to the prop- er transfer of this firearm as per the guidelines set forth by the winner’s resident state. The necessary transfer fees incurred for the use of an FFL (if necessary or applicable) will be reimbursed to the winner by the NJSTA. Any shipping will be at the expense of the winning shooter.

By entering into this “Gun For Hire Shootout Option” the winner agrees to be photo-graphed with anyone that the NJSTA Officers may deem necessary for the promotion of this event, the NJ State Trapshooting Championship events, and any other clay tar-get shooting event without compensation. The winner and all other participants also agree to allow their names and photographs (if taken) to be mentioned or shown in any publication or to be put on display for the betterment of trapshooting, clay target shooting or shooting in general without compensation or appeal.

SHOOTERS PLEASE NOTE During all NJSTA trapshooting tournaments there will be “No” saving of any posts on a squad. Shooter Classification must be completed before any shooter is squadded. An updated PAPER average card, or a recent card printout from the ATA website is required at the time of classification. All unpaid positions will be released 30 min after the start of an event. A fee of $5.00 may be charged for each person that is re-squadded.

New Jersey Resident Southern Zone vs. Northern Zone

A “Zone Team Trophy” will be awarded based on the scores of Saturday’s 16-yard Singles Championship event of the NJ State Shoot to the winning zone at the Annual NJ State Association meeting on Sunday before the start of final events. To be eligible to compete for this trophy shooters must compete at their respective zone Singles Championship Event. If a shooter competes in this zone event they are qualified regardless of their score.

After the NJ State Singles Championship Event the top five scores from “Qualified Shooters” of each zone will be added together to determine the Winning Zone. The names of the five individuals representing the winning zone will be engraved on the trophy and the trophy will be displayed at the gun club which hosts that year’s zone shoot. Each individual, in addition to having his or her name on the Zone Championship Trophy, will also be awarded a special pin acknowledging his or her participation in the event. The 2017 Zone Trophy was won by the South Team. 2017 team winners Bryan Romanow (198), Daniel Brandreth (197), Doug Bracher (194), Patty Slimm (193), Thomas Green Sr. (193) will be presented with their pins during the state meeting at Saturday’s State Meeting.
