The teams first met in 1891 in Chapel Hill. Virginia won the inaugural meeting 6-1. The 300th meeting between the teams will mark the first time Carolina has played any single opponent 300 times. That mark will be hit again this season in the third game against NC State on April 28. • The Tar Heels won two of three games last year against the Cavaliers. FIRST SERIES WIN IN MIAMI IN A DECADE• NorthCarolinatookhomeitsfirstserieswinatMiamisince2008aftertakingthefirsttwogamesinCoralGables.• Both games were won by unlikely heros off the bench. Game one was Josh Ladowski who went 2-3 with a run scored and 2 RBI, all in extra innings. Game two was Cooper Criswell’s dominant 13K relief performance.

BULLPEN CARRIES THE LOAD•Inthelastfivegames,theTarHeelbullpenthrew27.2ofthe43innings.• The last four wins for the Tar Heels were picked up by the bullpen. Joey Lancellotti against South Carolina, Josh Hiatt on Friday night against Miami, Cooper Criswell on Saturday versus Miami and Brett Daniels on Tuesday against App State. Had the Heels won on Sunday against Miami, someone from the bullpen would have also received that win.• Of the total 55 strikeouts over last weeks games, 39 came from the bullpen while it only conceded 7 of the 18 earned runs, with four of those coming on Sunday against Miami.

CRISWELL HAS CAREER NIGHT• Junior Cooper Criswell had a career night on Saturday, April 7 in Miami as he struck out 13 of the 20 batters he faced over 5.2 innings to pick up the win, and clinch the series for the Tar Heels.• His 13Ks were the most by a relief pitcher in the Mike Fox era. • In ACC play, he ranks 4th in ERA (1.76) and has struck out 25 batters. • On the season for the Tar Heels, he is second in apperances (16) with a 2-2 record and overall ERA of 1.80. He has struck out 38 batters and only issued 7 walks.

STRENGTH IN NUMBERS• The Tar Heel offense broke out for 33 runs in four games last week and got contributions from just about everyone.• Of the 14 Tar Heels with an at bat against Miami, 11 of them contributed a RBI, with seven of those having multiple RBI over the weekend.• Of the 15 Tar Heels with an at bat over the last week, 12 of them have a RBI and 10 of them have multiple RBI.• 12 different Tar Heels picked up hits over the week with 10 of them having multiple hits. • 11 different Tar Heels scored, with 7 of them scoring more than one run.

STEADY DANIELS• In 15 ACC games, Brett Daniels has appeared in 11 of them, best in the ACC, with a 1.23 ERA, only surrendering three runs while striking out 23 with a 3-0 record.•Ontheseason,hehasa1.22ERAandleadstheteaminappearances(18)withonlyfiveruns given up and 369strikeouts. •InACCplay,DanielsleadstheconferenceinERA(1.23),appearances(11)tiedforfirstin wins (3).

FREEMAN ENJOYS THE MIAMI SUN• Ike Freeman has one of his best offensive weekends on the year in Miami as he hit .500 andledtheteaminrunsscored(5),andwastiedforfirstinhits(4)whiledrivinginoneRBI.• Over the last week, Freeman hit .417 and now leads the team in batting average in ACC play with a .333.• Freeman is currently on a six-game hitting streak, one off his career best. During that stretchheisleadingtheteaminbattingaverage(.444)andtiedforfirstinruns(7)andhits(8).

INCLAN IS BECOMING MR. CLUTCH• In the three-game series against Miami and the midweek matchup against South Caro-lina, Clemente Inclan only had six at bats but led the team in batting average (.667), RBI (5), slugging percenage (.833) and on base percentage (.714). •AgainstSouthCarolina,andthefirsttwogamesoftheMiamiseries,InclanhadpinchhitRBIs. • The freshman had at least one RBI in each of the four games this week and is now hitting .381 on the season.• With runners in scoring position this season, Inclan is hitting .625 and has four, two out RBI. He is hitting .545 overall with runners on base.

LADOWSKI HAS CAREER NIGHT• In extra innings against Miami on Friday night, Ladowski stole the show going 2 for 3 off thebenchandscoringthego-aheadruninthe11thinningafteratripletorightfield,andthen drove in two RBI on a double in the 12th inning to secure the win for UNC.

FRESHMAN TAKE DOWN SOUTH CAROLINA ON THE MOUND• Caden O’Brien and Joey Lancelloti combined for 7 shutout innings on the mound against South Carolian in releif of Taylor Sugg. Both freshman hurlers gave up a hit, but combined to strike out 6 to earn the Tar Heels the victory.

FOX GETS 1,400 WINS• Tuesday’s win against Charlotte marked head coach Mike Fox’s 1,400th win as a man-ager at the collegiate level. • 539 of those wins were collected from 1983-1998 at North Carolina Wesleyan, the rest coming as the skipper of the Tar Heels.• Nine head coaches have hit the 1,400 mark at the Division-I level, only two others cur-rently active (Mike Martin, Florida State and Jim Morris, Miami).

TAR HEELS PICKED TO WIN ACC COASTAL• North Carolina is picked to win the ACC Coastal with Florida State picked to win the At-lantic and the league for the second consecutive year in a poll of the league’s 14 coaches.• TheSeminolesreceived10firstplacevotes,followedbyCarolinawiththreeandWakeForest receiving one vote as ACC champion.• In the Atlantic, Florida State led the way with 95 points, followed by Louisville (78), Clem-son (70), NC State (53), Wake Forest (52), Boston College (23) and Notre Dame (19). FSU received13firstplacevotesandWakeForestreceivedone.• Twelve coaches selected the Tar Heels to win the Coastal, with Virginia receiving the othertwofirstplacevotes.NorthCarolinacollected96points, followedbyVirginia(83),Duke (62), Miami (60), Georgia Tech (46), Virginia Tech (27) and Pitt (18).• Carolina has been picked to win the Coastal seven times since the poll went to the divisionalsystemin2007.Onfiveoftheprevioussixoccasions(2007,2009,2012,2013and 2017), the Tar Heels did in fact win the division crown.

BASEBALL AMERICA RANKS FORBES AMONG BEST ASSISTANT COACHES• The Tar Heels will enter the 2018 season with Baseball America’s fourth-ranked assis-tant coach in the country, Scott Forbes. SOPHOMORE PITCHERS RECEIVE PRESEASON ALL-AMERI-CA HONORS Starting pitcher Gianluca Dalatri and reliever Josh Hiatt will lead thewayforastackedTarHeelpitchingstaff.Hiattreceivedfirst-teamhonors from NCBWA both pitchers received third-team preseason all-America honors from D1Baseball. Dalatri is returning for his sophomore season following a strong freshman year as the Saturday starter. He appeared in 15 games going 7-3 with 3.34 ERA and 85 strikeouts in a team-high 97 in-nings of work. Dalatri has experience as an all-America player, as he earnedthenodasaConsensusFreshmanfirst-teamall-Americanfrom Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball, D1Baseball and Perfect Game last season. Hiatt is looking to follow up his redshirt-freshman season in which he earned first-team All-America honors from Baseball Americaand theNCBWA.Hewas to thepreseasonall-America first teamby NCBWA and third-team by D1Baseball. Hiatt worked out of the bullpen as the primary closer recording 13 saves and posting a 1.9 ERA and 64 strikeouts in just 52 innings of work.
