School Development Day Friday 2 March School development days are used by schools for planning and professional learning to ensure that the programs being delivered are of the very best quality and that staff have the opportunity to continually develop their professional skills. Schools have the capacity to schedule three of their school development days each year at a time that best suits their needs. One of our school development days is scheduled for Friday 2 March which is providing us with some valuable time for teacher to work together in planning for Inquiry based learning experiences for the rest of the year. Not all schools have scheduled this as a school development day. We will not be starting next term with a school development day and bus services have been notified to ensure services are available on this day. Swimming Carnivals We have been negotiating with the pool to find a suitable time to hold swimming carnivals this year and have been able to identify some time at the beginning of term four. We will keep you updated as soon as the dates are locked in. School Review All Independent Public Schools undergo a review from an external body, Department of Education Services, every three years. The purpose of the review is to ensure that schools are focussed on the targets and strategies outlined in their individual business plans. Our review is being held on Tuesday and Wednesday next week. The reviewers would like to meet with a group of parents to talk about the culture of the school and what they think about student achievement. We would love to hear from you via email [email protected] or on 9757 2666 if you are able to join in with some other parents on Wednesday 28 February at 9.20am for about 25 minutes. School Hats We have a broad brim school hat that is an important part of our uniform and all students are required to wear this hat every day. Some students are bringing a cap to school but we are explaining to these students that this is not adequate sun protection and not a part of our uniform. If you need to purchase a new hat, the uniform shop is open every Tuesday and Thursday between 8.30-11.15am and a hat can be purchased for $14.50.

Last Tuesday West Coast Eagles players Fraser McInnes and Elliot Yeo visited the school and gave a talk to many

of the classes about their careers and stressed the importance of goal-setting, diet and maintaining a healthy

lifestyle, in both their footy careers and for achieving success at school.

After their presentation, both players had a short autograph session

with students, before leaving to visit other schools.

The visit was part of a

two day community

camp West Coast were

running in the Cape to

Capes region.

On Wednesday 30 lucky

Year 6 students walked to Gloucester Park to participate, along with

students from other local schools, in a footy skills clinic run by many

West Coast players and coaching staff.

Students had the opportunity to both meet and be coached in various

skills activities by present players such as Jeremy McGovern, Lewis

Jetta, Andrew Gaff, Will Schofield and Mark Hutchings as well as

past AFL greats like Sam Mitchell and Adrian Hickmott.

Our students participated very energetically in a range of activities

focusing on goal-kicking, field kicking, hand-passing, team-work and

communication and listening skills and general

stamina - building sessions.

We look forward to welcoming back the West

Coast Eagles in the near future.

The South West Catchments Council (SWCC) is considering launching a unique school holiday program in Western Australia’s South West region in which fun and adventure are integral, not optional!

Open to children aged 7-15 years, SWCC's vision is to encourage children to get back to nature and better understand the natural world around them. Children will also be offered a deeper insight into the natural world from a Noongar Aboriginal perspective, incorporating history, music, art and language activities.

Is this a vision you share? Express your thoughts and ideas via this short survey.

Exciting News!! The very popular Pokemon Club has once

again started for the term. It is held every Wednesday at

1.05pm in Room 3. All students are welcome to attend.

Special thanks goes to Mrs Jo Cook for coordinating and

supervising this event each week.

This week our Year 4 students took part in a bike maintenance session in preparation for their Bike Camp to Wharnecliffe Mill next week. Special thanks goes to Robert from Lifestyle Cycles on Station Road, who once again donated his time to check over the students bikes. Students also got to practice their riding skills around an obstacle course once their bikes were given the all clear.

Student Health and Wellbeing MRPS Code of Conduct incorporates six core values:

Cooperation, Empathy, Enthusiasm, Flexibility, Honesty and Respect

SDERA (School Drug Education & Road Aware) Honesty

One of Margaret River Primary School Virtues is Honesty. Honesty is being fair, just and truthful; not cheating

or stealing. Honesty means you don't say things about people that aren't true. You are not being honest if you

make up rumours about someone. An example of not being honest is when people spread rumours about

others at school or on social media.

Honesty includes not hiding the truth because that is deceiving, not breaking rules to gain an advantage

because that is cheating, and not taking something that isn't yours because that is stealing.

Remember that, “Honesty is the Best Policy.”

SDERA—Bike Helmet Safety

Good luck to all the year 4 students on the 2018 Wharncliffe Bike Camp. Hopefully the tips I gave you last

week for checking your bike for safety came in handy, and all your bikes are up to scratch for the big riding

adventures to be had on camp. Now it’s time to check your helmets.

Check your helmet

A helmet that is worn correctly and fits properly can help to protect your child’s head if they fall off their bike,

scooter or skate board. Help your child to check that their helmet is the right size by checking the following:

• The helmet isn’t too tight or too loose. It should be

snug and not move around

• The buckles can be clipped together

• The helmet has not been in a crash

• The foam on the inside doesn’t have any dents

• The plastic skin on the outside isn’t buckled or cracked

• The chinstrap isn’t broken or frayed

• It is an Australian standards approved helmet.

Sometimes ‘hand-me-down’ helmets are not always safe to use. Use the checklist to find out if it is safe and

suitable or needs to be thrown away. When it’s time to buy your child a bike and helmet don’t buy one for

your child to ‘grow into’, buy one that fits your child now. If it’s too big and loose, it can move or slip off when

your child falls off their bike or hits something. Did you know a bicycle helmet is designed to offer the wearer

protection and if worn correctly, may decrease the risk of a head injury by up to 85%? Non-helmeted cyclists

are three times more likely to be killed as a result of a crash.

Be a good role model and always wear your helmet when you ride with your child. The earlier children learn

the importance of wearing a bike helmet, the more likely they will continue to wear a helmet as they grow

older. Be firm in laying down the ‘no-helmet-no-bike’ rule and remember children learn by example.

Thank you for playing a vital role in your child’s road safety education.
