Awards Banquet Information Buckhorn Saloon and Museum

This year, the Awards Banquet will be held the evening of Wednesday, August 8, 2018 at the Buckhorn Saloon and Museum. Each registered participant will receive a ticket to the catered event as well as admission to the museum for that evening. We are excited to offer a rare night out at the museum and hope everyone enjoys this opportunity. Additional tickets may be purchased for family and guests. Additional tickets will be $50 a person for the evening, this will cover their meal and their admission to the museum. Conference Registration— All conference registration must be completed using the online registration process. Registration will allow you to make all your conference registration selections and receive and invoice immediately via email that you can provide to your account administrators for payment. A paper form is provided for your use and reference; however, all registration must be completed online. Registration deadline is July 2nd, followed by late/on-site registration.

• Collaboration Awesome – 4-H Fashion & Interior Design Project Presenters: Angela McCorkle, FCH Program Specialist

Shawnte Clawson, 4-H and Youth Development, Program Specialist, D1 What happens when two Texas 4-H projects join to become one; AWESOMENESS! Plan on attending this session to learn the facts about the new 4-H Fashion & Interior Design project. An overview of the project will be shared, including introduction of curriculum, contests, camps, and leadership/service learning opportunities that support the project. Participants will complete a hands-on project lesson that they can implement in county 4-H programs immediately.

• “Homeschool Helper”

Presenter: Marian Hall, 4-H Volunteer and Homeschool Mom Come and discover how homeschool education is enriched by the 4-H program. The homeschool student is your friend, whom you can utilize and assist. A perfect arrangement for county extension staff and parents! As an educator and a ‘graduated’ homeschool mother, Mrs. Hall will share insights from her family’s 4-H journey. You will learn and be encouraged! You will be motivated and inspired!

Prestige Leadership Conference (PLC) is a multi-county effort that is offered to county council officers. The goals were to implement Leaders 4 Life program, enhance participants’ knowledge of their officer responsibilities and parliamentary procedure, introduce the participants to officers from other counties to promote networking, broaden participants’ knowledge of project areas offered through the 4-H program and provide career exploration on a college campus. Come learn how Dallas and Harris Counties are using peer-to-peer education, paired with programs of Texas A&M AgriLife to empower youth throughout schools and communities with skills such as confidence, resilience and teamwork – all skills that are necessary for future life and career success. Discover how you too can create a program of empowerment to change health behaviors among young people!

Presenter: Darlene Locke, Assistant Professor and Extension Specialist - Youth Development TAMU Recreation, Park and Tourism Science Department Are you wanting to advance your career as a youth development professional? Agents are already producing youth programs with phenomenal outcomes, but are you getting the full credit you deserve? The Sequor Youth Development Initiative at Texas A&M University provides evidence based research, fact sheets and research briefs focusing on Youth Development. Come learn about this collaborative effort between AgriLife Extension and the Departments of Recreation, Park and Tourism Science (RPTS) and Agricultural Leadership, Education and Communication (ALEC).

• Understand Different Learning Styles and Your Teaching Style

Presenter: Joaquina Scott Kanka. CEP Program Specialist – 4-H and Youth Development

The Learning-style theory is based on the major differences in the way people understand, the way they make decisions, and how active or reflective they are while interacting with others. By the end of this presentation, participants will be able to understand multiple intelligences and learning styles, understand VARK Learning Styles and complete a VARK Questionnaire for Teachers and Trainers to gain a better understanding of their teaching style.

• Healthy South Texas Youth Initiatives Presenters: Elaine Fries, Associate Director, Healthy South Texas

Luisa Colin, Special Initiatives Coordinator, Healthy South Texas Meredith Miller, Extension Program Specialist-4-H, District 11 Erica Reyes, Health Specialist, Healthy South Texas

This session will cover Walk Across Texas PE Coach and school wide initiatives with competition and youth rallies. Coach trainings, planning school rallies and friendly competition have helped participation numbers increase greatly. Ideas will be shared. Youth ambassadors recruited, trained, and engaged in Extension activities have provided us with lessons learned, and ideas for moving this program forward across the state. We will share engagement ideas.

• Put a Little Spice in Your Flyer Game Presenter: Megan Parr, CEA-4-H and Youth Development, Ellis County

Marketing our programs is an essential part of our daily lives. Studies have shown that including a catchy graphic with your text as part of your social media post drives people to actually look at what you have posted. Using Canva to create these graphics and flyers can be very easy. Through this workshop, participants will learn to make flyers and social media graphics to better market their programs. Each participant will walk out with a social media graphic ready to post! We will also touch on the other useful parts of what Canva has to offer (like newsletters, presentations, etc.). Participants need to bring a computer or tablet.

• Texas Student Success Initiative (College Access for Rural Texas Youth)

Presenter: Luis Saldana, District Program Specialist-4-H, District 12 Mari Luna-Torres, TSSI Project Director

Through a collaborative effort led by AgriLife Extension in 11 rural counties, high school students are getting the opportunity to engage in learning strategies that will build on their likelihood to enroll and complete post-secondary education, including associate degrees, certificates, and even 4-year professional degrees. A recent study identified common as well as unique barriers to student success. Come learn about what the study discovered about student access and success in post-secondary education and

how partnering with external partners is creating a model for Extension to prepare their students and local partners to build greater success for their youth and their future.

Come learn how to create the 4-H experience in elementary schools, while utilizing traditional 4-Hers to reach these youth through our local school's Extended Day Learning program.

• District 11 Crossroads

Presenter: Meredith Miller, Extension Program Specialist-4-H, District 11

Learn about a camp for high school youth to explore various college and career options. Students are hosted at a university and given a chance to explore various options from animal science to agriculture engineering to see if it really fits their interests.

Friday, August 10, 2018 Capnote Speaker: Jackie Van De Walle is a third-generation native San Antonian whose family was involved in farming and ranching … Van De Walle Farms, Inc. She is a past 4-H member and received the highest honor for a former member, the 4-H Alumni Award. In 2012, Jackie was named “Lifetime Assistant Vice President” of the San Antonio Livestock Exposition, Inc. Jackie currently serves as a board member for the Texas 4-H Foundation. Because of her involvement with the 4-H program, we feel like Jackie knows us as Agents and values the 4-H program. Jackie is here to share with us “how important it is for people to feel valued – when people feel valued they come back.”
