UAB is currently experiencing its best season in school history with an overall record of 9-3 and finished C-USA play at 7-1, both of which are new program records. A win this Saturday would give UAB its first 10-win season ever. A YEAR FOR THE AGES: Along with setting the new program best for wins, the Blazers made history all throughout the 2018 season. UAB did not lose a game from Week 3-Week 12, and its eight game-winning streak established a new school record. The Blazers also cracked the Amway Coaches Poll Top-25 on Nov. 12, marking the first time since 2004 UAB had been ranked and just the second time in program history (2004 BCS rankings). For UAB’s outstanding efforts, head coach Bill Clark is a semifinalist for the George Munger Collegiate Coach of the Year Award and defensive coordinator David Reeves is a semifinalist for the Broyles Award (nation’s top assistant coach). NATIONAL DEFENSIVE RANKINGS: The Blazers enter the championship game ranking top-10 in seven different statistical categories, and will look for redemption against the Blue Raiders who put up 394 yards of offense on UAB last week. The Blazers are eighth in total defense (287.2) and lead the country in fourth down defense (.214), while ranking second in third down defense (.255). Additional top-10 national ranks include fourth in sacks per game (3.42), sixth in tackles for loss per game (8.1), seventh in passing yards allowed (166.3) and ninth in scoring defense (16.7). SPENCER BROWN AMONG THE BEST BACKS IN THE COUNTRY: Despite only one carry last week, sophomore running back Spencer Brown continues to be the workhorse for the nation’s 30th ranked rushing offense. Brown is seventh nationally with 15 rushing touchdowns and has scored at least one rushing touchdown in 10 of 12 games. Brown’s 15 rushing touchdowns are a UAB single season record and he now has 25 career touchdowns in 25 career games, which is the third most all-time. Brown has compiled 993 rushing yards this season and eyes back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons to begin his career. He is fifth on UAB’s career rushing list with 2,322 yards and needs 496 yards to become the Blazers’ all-time leading rusher. BACK AND BETTER THAN EVER: In the two years since UAB’s program has been reinstated, the Blazers have played to an overall record of 17-8 and a league mark of 13-3. The 13 C-USA wins are the most of any school in that two year span. After a two-year hiatus from game action in which Bill Clark stayed loyal to UAB and rebuilt the program from scratch, the Blazers experienced unprecedented success in their 2017 return season and finished with a program record eight FBS wins.

Clark guided UAB to an 8-5 overall record and just its second bowl appearance in program history. The Blazers have now been bowl eligible five times in school history and both years under Clark. Other school records set in 2017 included going 6-2 in C-USA action and a perfect 6-0 mark at home for the first time ever.

Maybe most impressively, Clark helped galvanize an entire community throughout the two-year hiatus as the city of Birmingham contributed more than $47 million to help reinstate the program. The loyalty was evident as UAB led Conference USA in attendance with an averaged of 26,375 fans per game in 2017.

Included in that was #theReturn against Alabama A&M on Sept. 2 in which a record crowd of 45,212 fans poured into Legion Field to witness the Blazers’ 38-7 victory in its first game back in 1,007 days.

Clark and the Blazers proved the entire nation wrong in 2017 (ranked 130th out of 130 teams in preseason publications), and for his efforts he was a candidate for almost every national coaching award, and won the CBS Sports National Coach of the Year as well as Conference USA Coach of the Year.

On the field, he orchestrated one of UAB’s most potent offenses in program history and a devastating ground game featuring true freshman Spencer Brown, who ran for 1,329 yards and 10 touchdowns. Brown slashed the UAB records books in his first season donning the Green and Gold as he broke program’s single season rushing record by a freshman previously held by Jordan Howard and he is currently third in program history for overall single season rushing yards. His 10 rushing touchdowns is also seventh most in a single season.

Brown was named the Conference USA Freshman of the Year, a FWAA Freshman All-American and a Second Team All-Conference USA member for his efforts. Clark also guided quarterback A.J. Erdely to record setting numbers as the junior tied a school record with 13 rushing touchdowns and threw for 2,331 yards and 16 touchdowns while completing 60.7 percent of his passes. His 29 total touchdowns were the second most in a single season at UAB.

The 2017 defense was led by a trio of seniors who became the backbone of the program, led by Darious Williams who was named First Team All-Conference USA and a First Team All-American by Pro Football Focus. He finished the regular season leading C-USA in passes defended (20), pass breakups (15) and interceptions (5). Tevin Crews more than tripled his production from his junior year in 2014 as he led the team in tackles with 102 and was second on the team in tackles for loss (12.0). Crews finished the regular season as the only player in Conference USA to rank in the top 10 in both tackles and tackles for loss. Shaq Jones had 57 tackles and 13.0 TFL at the jack linebacker position and set the example for the team on and off the field. Along with his on-field production, Jones was named to the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team and was a semifinalist for the inaugural Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year Award, both awarded for exceptional community service and humanitarian work.

Prior to the start of the 2017 season, the Blazers moved into their new state-of-the-art Football Operations Center which features coach’s offices, meeting and film rooms, athletic training facilities, locker rooms, a weight room, a nutrition station and two full turf practice fields. One of those practice fields is a pioneering open-air covered pavilion made possible by Legacy Community Federal Credit Union.

Legacy Credit Union announced the largest-ever sponsorship with UAB, a 20-year, $4.2

million naming right agreement for Legacy Pavilion, and in the process, became the official credit union of UAB.

In Clark’s first season as head coach of the Blazers in 2014, he turned around a program that was 2-10 the year before into a team that finished 6-6 and earned bowl eligibility for the first time since 2004.

The Blazers had a school record 15 players earn All-Conference USA honors during the 2014 season, including three first team selections (RB Jordan Howard, DE Diaheem Watkins and KR J.J. Nelson). Nelson was also named the school’s first Walter Camp First Team All-American.

The Blazers also experienced the country’s second-highest increase in home attendance average, growing by more than 130 percent.

Prior to UAB, Clark was the head coach at Jacksonville State in 2013 and led the Gamecocks to an 11-4 record, their most victories since the 1992 campaign when JSU won the NCAA Division II National Championship. That number set an Ohio Valley Conference record and was also the most wins by a first-year head coach.

Jacksonville State earned an at-large berth in the FCS Playoffs and captured two victories -- including a second-round win over No. 6 McNeese State to reach the quarterfinals. The wins were the Gamecocks’ first-ever in the NCAA Division I playoffs.

JSU concluded the 2013 season ranked No. 10 in the final FCS poll. The Gamecocks, who ranked sixth in the nation in FCS attendance, set 49 school records in 2013 and broke 13 OVC marks, as well as three NCAA records. JSU had two players earn All-America honors and nine selected for All-Ohio Valley Conference accolades.

Clark became Jacksonville State’s head coach after five outstanding seasons at South Alabama as the Jaguars’ defensive coordinator.

Clark’s defense at USA finished second in the Sun Belt Conference in total defense in 2012 as the Jaguars completed their first full season of competition in the league. South Alabama posted the best record of any Division I FCS Independent in 2011 after winning the first 17 games in the program’s history in 2009 and 2010.

During the 2010 season, South Alabama allowed only 13 points and 254.6 yards per game en route to a 10-0 record. In 2009, the Jags allowed only 5.9 points and 234 yards per game when the defense forced 25 sacks and forced 23 turnovers in only seven games.

Clark joined South Alabama in 2008 after spending nine years as head coach at Prattville (Ala.) High School where he led the Lions to national prominence. He won a pair of Class 6A State Championships as his last two teams won 30 straight games, while the 2007 squad was ranked No. 2 in USA Today’s national high school poll.

Following his final season at Prattville High School, he was named the Alabama High School Athletic Association Coach of the Year and was also selected as the Schutt Southeast Regional Coach of the Year.

He first led the Lions to the Class 6A state playoffs in 2000, his second season guiding the program. Clark earned his first postseason victory a year later, helping Prattville advance to the quarterfinals before falling to the eventual state champion, which is where the Lions’ season would end each of the next two falls.

Prattville made its first state championship game appearance under Clark in 2004, with the team allowing three touchdowns in four postseason contests, including a pair of shutouts. The Lions advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2005 playoffs before dropping a two-point decision.

Clark posted a 107-11 (90.7 percent) overall record during his tenure, suffering his last regular-season loss during the second week of the 2002 season.

Clark served on the staff of the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic three times, including as head coach in the summer of 2007. He also served as head coach in the 2004 North-South All-Star Game. Clark began his coaching career as an assistant at Piedmont High School (1990-91) and also has coaching stints at Tuscaloosa County High School (1992-94), Coffee County (Ga.) High School (1995-96) and Dothan High School (1997-98).

He graduated from Jacksonville State in 1990 with a degree in physical education. Clark and his wife, Jennifer, have two children: daughter, Katie and son Jacob. His son Jacob appeared in all 13 games on special teams for the Blazers in 2017.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB football team notched its second largest margin of victory in program history on Thursday night as the Blazers defeated Savannah State 52-0 at Legion Field in front of 27,124 fans. The Blazer defense held the Tigers to 178 yards of total offense and just 23 yards through the air en route to its first shutout since Nov. 29, 2008, against UCF. The 23 yards passing are the second fewest given up by UAB since allowing 10 yards through the air against WKU on Oct. 5, 1996. “These were our fans here, and really, a great job as they always do,” said head coach Bill Clark. “We’ve got a big road game next week and then we’ll be playing Tulane at 12 p.m. the week after next, which is a really great opponent. Hopefully they’ll come out and support us again. We’re very appreciative of them.” Sophomore running back Spencer Brown tallied his seventh career 100-yard rushing performance which moved him into fourth place on UAB’s career 100-yard rushing list. He finished with 102 yards on 18 carries. Senior wide receiver Collin Lisa had a career night with 10 catches for 93 yards and a touchdown, while quarterback A.J. Erdely threw for 228 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively, linebacker Kristopher Moll had a team-high five tackles, while Jamell Garcia-Williams had four tackles, two TFL and a sack. Chris Woolbright and Brontae Harris each had interceptions, while Woolbright returned his to the house for a touchdown. HOW IT HAPPENED: UAB marched down the field on its opening drive as Spencer Brown picked up 41 yards on five carries, and finished off the drive with a three-yard touchdown run. The Blazer offense had 123 yards on 22 plays in the opening quarter. The defense sparked the offense as two second quarter interceptions turned into points for the Blazers. With Savannah State backed up in its own end, Woolbright recorded his second career interception and returned it 34 yards for a touchdown, giving UAB a 14-0 lead. Brontae Harris snagged his second career INT on the ensuing drive to set up the offense with excellent field position on the Savannah State 43-yard line. From there, the Blazers needed five plays to find the end zone, capped with A.J. Erdely finding Andre Wilson in the corner of the end zone for six, giving UAB a 21-0 lead with 4:55 left in the second. After forcing a Savannah State three and out, the Green and Gold went to work with a 6-play, 62-yard drive that culminated with Kingston Davis punching it in from one yard out as UAB went up 28-0 at the half. The Blazer offense put on the steam as they took their opening drive of the second half 75 yards, finishing it off with Erdely connecting with Lisa in the end zone to put UAB up 35-0. UAB tacked on three more points before the end of the third with Nick Vogel adding a 23-yard field goal, putting the Blazers up 38-0. UAB put up two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter as Lucious Stanley and James Noble III scored on the ground after drives of seven and eight plays, respectively. The 52-0 final score is the second largest margin of victory in school history. UP NEXT: UAB will hit the road next week to play Coastal Carolina in Conway, S.C. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. CT on Sept. 8.

BIRMINGHAM – With the game tied at 24-24 early in the fourth quarter, the UAB football team put together a 13-play, 93-yard drive which took up 7:34 and capped it with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Logan Scott, as the Blazers defeated Tulane 31-24 on Saturday at Legion Field. The drive was UAB’s longest scoring drive of the season in plays, yards and time of possession. The defense followed it up with a crucial takeaway with two minutes to go and a sack as time expired to secure the victory. UAB is now 8-0 at home since its return to the playing field which has tied a school record for consecutive home wins. UAB (2-1) used a stout defensive effort to shutdown the Tulane offense, holding the Green Wave to just 7-of-24 passing for 180 yards. Kristopher Moll had stellar day as he forced a fumble which resulted in a 48-yard touchdown return by Garrett Marino, while Moll also added his first career interception, a sack and a TFL. The defense led the charge all day, racking up six sacks and 10 TFLs while forcing three Tulane turnovers. Spencer Brown rushed for 101 yards and a touchdown to notch his eighth career 100-yard rushing performance. The Blazers, who lead Conference USA in rushing, compiled 269 rushing yards and has had no less than that number in all three of their games.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The UAB offense came out firing as it marched down the field on its opening drive, going 65 yards on nine plays. Quarterback A.J. Erdely capped off the drive with a nine-yard touchdown run to give UAB an early 7-0 lead. In the second quarter, UAB had a 13-play drive that went 59-yards and chewed up over five minutes off the clock. Brown finished the drive with a two-yard touchdown run to put the Blazers up 14-0. Tulane (1-2) answered back with an 8-play, 75-yard scoring drive that ended in a three-yard rushing touchdown by Darius Bradwell, cutting the UAB lead to 14-7. Two drives later, Tulane had the ball on its own 48-yard line and went for it on fourth down. Tulane quarterback Jonathan Banks rolled out of the pocket where he was met by Moll, forcing a fumble and resulting in Marino’s 48-yard score to give UAB a 21-7 lead at the half. The Green Wave scored on their first drive of the second half to cut into the Blazer lead, off a 44-yard touchdown strike from Banks to Darnell Mooney to make the score 21-14. UAB answered back on the next drive with a 37-yard field goal from Nick Vogel, extending the lead to 24-14. Tulane drove 75 yards in six plays on the ensuing drive where Banks again found Mooney for six points, this time a 24-yard touchdown pass to make it a three-point game, 24-21. The Green Wave tied the game at 24-24 with a 40-yard field goal and 10:01 remaining on the clock, but that’s when UAB took control of the quarter. Beginning at its own seven-yard line, UAB marched down the field on the legs of Lucious Stanley and Spencer Brown. Stanley and Brown each rolled up 21 yards on the drive while Erdely rushed for 15 yards, including a big 13-yard run before finding Scott in the end zone for six, giving the Blazers a 31-24 lead. Twelve of the 13 plays on the drive were rushes. With the win, UAB evened the all-time series with its former C-USA rival 5-5. The Blazers outgained the Green Wave 449-355 in total offense.

UP NEXT: The Blazers return home on Sept. 29 to open conference play against Charlotte. A start time for the game will be announced on Monday, Sept. 17.

BIRMINGHAM – History was made at Legion Field on Saturday night as a dominant first half from both the UAB offense and defense saw the Blazers win their program-best ninth-straight home game with a 28-7 victory over the Charlotte 49ers. The win snapped the previous home-winning streak of eight games, set over the 1995 and 1996 seasons. The Blazers are now 9-0 at Legion Field since returning to action in 2017. UAB (3-1, 1-0 C-USA) tallied 284 of its 330 total offensive yards in the first half, while scoring three times to put the game away early. Quarterback A.J. Erdely paced the Blazers offensively, going 13-of-16 through the air for 214 yards and one score and adding 21 yards rushing on 10 carries and a rushing touchdown. Sophomore running back Spencer Brown continued to be a work horse for the Blazers’ attack, rushing for 68 yards on 18 carries and scoring two times, his first multi-score game of the season and the third of his career. As a team, the Blazers had 119 yards on the ground. Five different Blazers hauled in at least two catches, paced by Collin Lisa who brought in three passes for 56 yards. Senior Andre Wilson score on UAB’s opening possession with a 35-yard touchdown reception and finished with two catches for 67 yards. Defensively, UAB played lights out, holding Charlotte to 55 yards of total offense in the first half and forcing two turnovers in the game. The Blazers also notched seven tackles for loss in the game, including five sacks. Chris Woolbright was nearly unstoppable on Saturday, recording a career-high eight tackles, two for a loss and a sack, while Broderick Thomas and D.A. Williams recorded five tackles and four tackles, respectively. Cornerback Brontae Harris captured his second interception of the season in the first half to go along with four tackles and a TFL. Will Dawkins forced the only other turnover of the contest with a game-clinching fumble late in the fourth quarter, which he also recovered.

HOW IT HAPPENED: UAB went to work in a hurry on its opening drive, stringing together three plays of 10+ yards to get into Charlotte territory. Facing a long third down play on the Charlotte 35, Erdely hit a streaking Wilson, who tip-toed down the sideline and made a nifty spin move across the goal line for a 35-yard touchdown to put the Blazers up 7-0 less than four minutes into the game. After Brontae Harris’ second pick of the season stalled Charlotte’s opening drive, UAB put together six positive offensive plays on their ensuing possession before Erdely connected with Xavier Ubosi for 37 yards on another big third down to set up the Blazers with first and-goal on the 49er two-yard line. Brown finished the job a play later, crashing through the line to cap off the 8-play, 73-yard drive and give UAB a 14-0 with 3:41 to play in the opening period. The Blazers slowed the game down midway through the second quarter, putting together a methodical 11-play, 75-yard drive over 5:45 and capped it with a four-yard rushing touchdown by Erdely to put UAB up 21-0. Both offenses went quiet until late in the fourth quarter, when Charlotte opened its drive with a 48-yard pass from Chris Reynolds to Rico Arnold to put the 49ers in scoring position. It took three plays, but the visitors scored their first points of the game when Reynolds found the end zone from four yards out to pull the 49ers within two scores at 21-7 with 5:51 to play. Erdely got the Green and Gold’s next drive off to a hot start, hitting Lisa for 22 yards to get into Charlotte territory. From there, the Blazers milked valuable seconds off the clock by running seven plays for 31 yards before Brown punched it in from two yards out for his second score of the game to put UAB ahead, 28-7, with 3:30 remaining in the game. Charlotte (2-3, 1-1 C-USA) was able to move the ball late in the game, but a fumble that was forced and recovered by Dawkins with 55 seconds on the clock sealed the 28-7 victory for the Blazers.

UP NEXT: UAB returns to the gridiron on October 6 when it opens a two-game road swing against Louisiana Tech. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. on Stadium/Facebook.

RUSTON, La. – Spencer Brown found the end zone two times on Saturday night to compliment a dominant perfor-mance from the Blazer defense as the UAB football team took sole possession of first place in the C-USA West Division with a 28-7 victory over Louisiana Tech. UAB’s (4-1, 2-0 C-USA) win marks its first in Ruston and clinched back-to-back wins over Louisiana Tech for the first time in school history, while the 21-point margin of victory was the Blazers’ largest in a road game since winning 45-24 at Southern Miss on Nov. 29, 2014. Brown was the Green and Gold’s most lethal player on the offensive side of the ball, rushing 20 times for 90 yards and two scores. Brown has now recorded a multi-touchdown game four times in his career and in back-to-back games after finding the back of the end zone twice against Charlotte. Quarterback A.J. Erdely also provided a spark on the ground, rushing 13 times for 76 yards and touchdown, while adding 136 yards passing and throwing for one score. Erdely was one yard shy of his career high of 77 set last year at Ball sTate. UAB finished the night with 229 of its 365 total yards on the ground, the fourth game that the Blazers have had at least 200 yards of total rushing this year. Three Blazer receivers hauled in two catches on the night, paced by Xavier Ubosi, who finished the night with 50 yards and his second career touchdown catch. Collin Lisa tacked on 46 yards through the air on two receptions, while Kailon Carter matched his career high with two catches for 31 yards. Defensively, Kris Moll led the way with career highs in tackles (8) and tackles for loss (2), while forcing a fumble late in the third quarter to set up a Blazer touchdown. Tre’ Crawford and Mar’Sean Diggs each recorded seven tackles, respectively, with Diggs capturing his second interception of the season. As a unit, the Green and Gold notched five sacks, their third consecutive game with at least five, while recording 10 tackles for loss on the evening. UAB also did well to get off the field, holding Louisiana Tech to just two third-down conversions on 12 attempts.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Louisiana Tech (3-2, 1-1 C-USA) seized the early momentum three plays into the game when it forced Erdely into an early interception on the Blazers’ opening drive. The home team wasted no time getting on the board, capping a three-play, 44-second drive with a five-yard run by Kam McKnight to go up 7-0 early. After a big forced fumble by Keely was recovered by Mofor, the offense got to work and marched down the field with relative ease. Facing a long second down, Erdely stepped up and hit a streaking Ubosi, who skirted down the sideline for the 40-yard touchdown to tie the game at 7-7 with 10:26 to play in the first half. UAB capitalized on a big forced fumble by Moll midway through the third quarter, taking the ball 26 yards to the one yard line on four plays. Facing third and goal, Brown took the handoff and muscled his way across the goal line to give UAB its first lead of the night, 14-7, with 7:18 remaining in the third quarter. Brown was the beneficiary of a critical score to put the Blazers up 21-7 midway through the final period of play, finding a big hole up the middle and coasting into the end zone from 26-yards out for the second time to polish off an impressive 10-play, 89-yard drive. After the UAB defense forced a turnover on downs, the UAB offense applied the dagger in just three plays when Erdely kept the ball himself and flew around the outside, taking the ball 38-yards to the house to put UAB ahead 28-7. From there, the Blazers’ defense finished off a dominant night with a Diggs interception to seal the deal in Ruston and give UAB’s fourth win of the season. UAB held Louisiana Tech quarterback J’Mar Smith to just 9-of-23 passing for 107. The Blazers entered the game third nationally in passing yards allowed, and through five games, opposing quarterbacks are 45-of-109 for 671 yards, four touchdowns and five interceptions.

UP NEXT: UAB wraps up its two-game road swing on October 13 when it heads west to Houston to face off with Rice. Kickoff is slated for noon on ESPN+.

The Blazers (5-1, 3-0 C-USA) earned their second shutout of the season, along with their season-opening 52-0 victory over Savannah State. It is the first time UAB has recorded two shutouts in the same season and the first time Rice has been held scoreless in 210 games. UAB’s defense entered the game ranked second nationally in sacks per game, averaging 4.0 and posted three quarter-back sacks against the Owls, giving them 19 sacks in its last four games. The pass defense was stout once again as they entered the game second in the nation in passing yards allowed and held Rice to just 136 yards through the air. The secondary is now holding opponents to 134.8 yards per game through the air and has yet to allow a 200-yard passer this year. UAB also held Rice to just 1-of-17 on third-down attempts. Rice (1-6, 0-3 C-USA) was held to 186 yards of total offense, while the Blazers limited the Owls to just 50 yards rushing. UAB added nine TFLs and a fumble recovery to its impressive defensive day. Quarterback A.J. Erdely and wide receiver Xavier Ubosi connected several times throughout the day and for big results. Ubosi hauled in four passes for 196 and two touchdowns. He tied his career high in receptions and set new career highs for receiving yards and longest reception as he brought in a 95-yard touchdown strike. The 95-yard receiving touchdown tied a record for the longest scoring play in school history. Erdely went 11-for-17 with 274 yards passing and two passing touchdowns. The signal caller also ran for 29 yards and a score. The UAB rushing attack rolled up 208 yards on the ground and punched the ball into the end zone three times. The Green and Gold have had no less than two rushing touchdowns in each game this season and have scored three rushing touchdowns in five-of-six games. Lucious Stanley led the charge with a career-high 70 yards on nine carries while Spencer Brown added 36 yards and a score. Jarrion Street notched his first career touchdown in the third quarter as he plunged into the end zone from a yard out. The Trussville, Ala. native ran for 37 yards on six carries against Rice.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Blazers received the ball to start the game and it took them just four plays to find the end zone when Erdely found Ubosi for a 38-yard strike. UAB forced Rice to punt on each of its first two drives, and on the Owl’s second punt, redshirt sophomore Chase Biles blocked the punt and recovered it in the end zone for the special team’s score which gave the Blazers a 14-0 advantage. It then became 21-0 when Ubosi etched his name into the UAB record book. With the Blazers starting at their own 1-yard line early in the second quarter, Ubosi hauled in a 95-yard touchdown reception on third down. He and Erdely now share that record with two other QB-WR duos: Darrell Hackney to Roddy White in 2004 and John Whitcomb to Derrick Ingram in 1994. An Erdely 19-yard touchdown run with 1:16 left in the first half moved the Blazers ahead 28-0 which is the lead they brought into the locker room. The Blazers continued their momentum out of the break as Jarrion Street and Spencer Brown each scored 1-yard rushing touchdowns early in the second half to move UAB ahead 42-0. Brown’s touchdown was set up by Stacy Keely who had a sack fumble which was recovered by Zachary Williams and returned to the Rice 3-yard line. UP NEXT:

The win is UAB’s fourth in a row and it sets up a massive showdown with North Texas at Legion Field next Saturday. Kickoff on beIN Sports is set for 6:30 p.m.

BIRMINGHAM – The word “history” has become a constant theme around the UAB football program since its return to the gridiron and Saturday night’s huge victory was no exception after the Blazers scored 19-unanswered second half points to come from behind and defeat North Texas, 29-21, in front of 28,014 fans at Legion Field. With the win, UAB (6-1, 4-0 C-USA) is off to its best start in program history and has recorded 14 wins since “The Return,” the most over a two-year span in school history. The Blazers also continued its perfect streak at home and are now 10-0 in the friendly confines of Legion Field. UAB’s victory also clinched bowl eligibility for the Blazers, marking the sixth time in program history and the third straight season with Bill Clark at the helm. Sophomore Spencer Brown was a major force for the Blazers’ attack, rushing for 100 yards and matching a career high with three touchdowns in the win. Brown has now rushed for at least 100 yards three times this season and nine times in his career, while recording his third multi-touchdown game of the season and the fifth of his career. Quarterback A.J. Erdely went 14-of-22 through the air for 189 yards, finding four different receivers who each had two receptions on the night. Senior Andre Wilson led the receivers with 39 yards receiving. UAB’s top-5 defense was stellar, holding North Texas scoreless in the second half and notching four sacks and six tackles for loss. Garrett Marino wreaked havoc in the back field all night, coming up with a game-high two sacks and three tackles for loss along with a critical safety in the third quarter. Jamell Garcia-Williams and Craig Kanyangarara each added sacks in the contest, while Anthony Rush forced a crucial fumble late in the game. North Texas (6-2, 2-2 C-USA) was led by quarterback Mason Fine, who went 29-of-40 through the air for 336 yards and three touchdowns. Jaelon Darden was on the receiving end of two of those touchdown passes, hauling in 10 passes for 143 yards.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Both teams got off to a sluggish start offensively, combining for three three-and-outs to open the game before North Texas strung together six positive plays for 32 yards on its second possession. Facing a third-and-five on their own 45, Rico Bussey found himself on the receiving end of a slant pass from Fine and went 55-yards for the score to put the Mean Green ahead, 7-0, with 7:58 to go in the first quarter. UAB answered the North Texas score with points of its own, using a season-long 16-play, drive and going 74 yards to set up a Nick Vogel field 34-yard field, which he connected with ease to close the gap at 7-3. Facing another long field, the Mean Green used four long pass plays to make its way into plus territory before Fine connected with Jaelon Darden for a 19-yard touchdown to extended the North Texas lead to 14-3 less than three minutes into the second quarter. On the ensuing kickoff, newcomer Starling Thomas V exploited a huge hole and busted out for a 61-yard return to set the Blazers up in positive territory. On the first play of the drive, Erdely hit Wilson for 34 yards to the one yard line, which set up a touchdown by Brown to bring the score to 14-10. With quality field position following a UAB punt from its own end zone, the Mean Green took the ball down to its own 24-yard in four quick plays. With second down and a short four yards to go, Fine threw his third touchdown of the game to Darden, who sliced his way into the end zone to push the visitors’ lead back to 21-10 at the half. UAB’s defense came up with the first huge play of the second half. With North Texas pinned on its own one-yard line, Marino busted through the offensive line and took down Fine for a safety. After receiving the ball following the defensive score, the Green and Gold’s offense marched down the field and capped an 8-play, 64-yard drive with a 3-yard score from Brown to trim the lead to 21-19 with 4:29 to play in the third quarter. On the second play of the fourth quarter, Jarrion Street broke out a career-long 32-yard rush to set the Blazers up inside the Mean Green 5-yard line. Brown rewarded Street for his hard work, pounding in his career-tying third touchdown of the night to give UAB its first lead at 26-21 just 44 seconds into the final period. Vogel extended the lead with his second field goal of the night – a 26-yarder – to push the lead to 29-21 with 2:10 to play. From there, the defense held firm and forced turnover on downs inside UAB territory to seal the historic victory. The Blazers are have now won a program best five games in a row. UAB and North Texas combined for 792 yards of total offense with UNT compiling 400 and UAB 392. The Blazers had 203 of those yards on the ground and have now rushed for more than 200 yards in six of seven games.

UP NEXT: UAB returns to action on Oct. 27 when its makes the journey to El Paso, Texas, to square off with UTEP. Kickoff from the Sun Bowl is set for 6:30 p.m. CST on ESPN+.

EL PASO, Texas – Behind yet another dominant defensive effort, the UAB football team improved to 7-1 overall and 5-0 in Conference USA with a 19-0 shutout victory over UTEP on Saturday night at the Sun Bowl. UAB tallied a season-high 12 tackles for loss and held the Miners (0-8, 0-4 C-USA) to just 19 yards rushing and 120 total yards. The Blazers recorded their third shutout of the season and have now held their opponents scoreless in 16 of the last 20 quarters. UAB is allowing just 13.2 points per game this year. Spencer Brown rushed for 103 yards and a touchdown, and in the process moved into sixth place on UAB’s career rushing list (2,023). It was his fourth 100-yard rushing game of the season and the 10th of his career. Brown has 694 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns this season. Conference USA’s No. 1 rushing offense, UAB compiled 265 yards on the ground and has now rushed for over 200 yards in seven of eight games, while adding two additional rushing scores. UAB has now scored multiple rushing touchdowns every game this year.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Blazers took the lead on their second possession with a 15-yard rushing touchdown from Brown. Brown’s 11th rushing touchdown of the season is one more than his total of 10 as a true freshman last year. Nick Vogel tacked on a 36-yard field goal late in the first quarter and the defense would take it from there for the remainder of the game. UAB held the Miners to just 72 yards of total offense in the first half and tallied seven tackles for loss which guided the Blazers to a 10-0 halftime lead. With UAB threatening early in the third quarter, UTEP had a goal line stand on fourth-and-one, but the Blazers once again swung momentum back to UAB with a safety on the ensuing play. UTEP tried to run the ball out of the end zone, but Anthony Rush forced a fumble which the Miners recovered and moved the score to 12-0 in favor of UAB. The Blazers have now had safeties in back-to-back games. Tyler Johnston III added UAB’s final points of the game on a 4-yard rush with 4:10 left to play in the game, giving the Blazers a 19-0 lead which would be the final margin of victory. UAB has now won six straight games and remains in first place in Conference USA.

UP NEXT: The Blazers now return to Legion Field for their next two games against UTSA (11/3) and Southern Miss (11/10).

BIRMINGHAM – UAB fans are accustomed to big-time performances when they come to Legion Field and Saturday night’s offensive output was no different as UAB tallied a school-record 668 yards of total offense and extended its home winning streak to 11 games with a 52-3 rout of UTSA. The Blazers (8-1, 6-0 C-USA) got the offense moving with an unprecedented display on the ground, rushing for a school-record 419 yards, shattering the previous record of 371 set on Nov. 29, 2014 against Southern Miss. The ground game helped the Blazers post 52 points and win with a 49-point margin, tied for the third-best margin of victory in program history. Tyler Johnston III, who made his first career start at quarterback for the Green and Gold, went 10-for-17 against the Roadrunners for 249 yards and three touchdowns, while rushing for 62 yards and a touchdown on nine carries. Sophomore Spencer Brown was the catalyst for the running back corps’ big night on the ground, handling the ball 20 times for a season-best 147 yards and two touchdowns. Brown notched his third-straight 100-yard performance and tied the school record with his 13th rushing touchdown of the season. UAB’s receivers were led by Xavier Ubosi, who brought in three catches for 72 yards and two scores. Kailon Carter also went for six points against UTSA, hauling in his first touchdown of the season and finished with 50 yards. The Blazers’ defense held UTSA to 220 yards of total offense and just 84 yards on the ground, while allowing the Roadrunners to convert only two third down conversions (2-of-12). UAB has allowed just 38 points through six C-USA games this season, with five of those opponents scoring seven points or less. Chris Woolbright led the way with five total tackles and one TFL, followed by Anthony Rush, who added four tackles and a TFL of his own. Grayson Cash brought in UAB’s only interception of the evening, the first of his career, while Tre’ Crawford fell on a timely forced fumble by Zachary Williams deep in Blazer territory to keep UTSA out of the end zone.

HOW IT HAPPENED: It was a dream start for Johnston III in his first career start, rushing the ball twice for 10 yards on the opening drive before hitting Kailon Carter for a 50-yard score to put the Blazers ahead early, 7-0. Johnston III’s hot play continued into the second possession, going 3-for-3 through the air with passes of 37 yards and 12 yards, respectively, before connecting with Ubosi for a 22-yard touchdown strike to double the Blazers’ advantage, 14-0, with 7:54 to play in the opening period. UTSA (3-6, 2-3 C-USA) responded to UAB’s early offensive explosion with three points of its own, taking the ball down the field with the help of two big pass plays. The Blazer defense stepped up big inside the red zone, though, keeping the Roadrunners away from the end zone and limiting the damage to a 37-yard field goal by Jared Sackett to cut the lead to 14-3. The Blazers responded with their second 50-yard touchdown of the contest when Wilson took a handoff from Johnston III and turned on the jets around the corner, scampering untouched into the end zone to push UAB’s advantage to 21-3 late in the first quarter. Starting from its own two-yard line following a strong defensive stand, the UAB offense marched right down the field once again on the shoulders of Brown and Johnston III, who found Ubosi for 19 yards on second and long to the UTSA 31. On the ensuing play, the quarterback-receiver duo connected for the second time to extend the lead to 28-3. UAB’s special teams got involved early in the second quarter as Gerrit Prince shot through the UTSA punt defense and blocked the attempt to set up UAB on the UTSA four-yard line. Brown needed one play to find the end zone for the 12th time this season, bouncing off a tackle for six and putting UAB ahead, 35-3, with 12:00 in the first half. In all, UAB scored touchdowns on its first five possession to take command of the game. Vogel capped off the dominant first half with a career-long 51-yard field goal to cap off a 7-play, 56-yard drive and send the Blazers into the locker room with a 38-3 lead. The Blazers scored once in each of the final two quarters, with Brown tacking on his second score of the evening with 9:32 to play in third and Johnston III adding his own rushing score 50 seconds into the fourth quarter before the Blazers went on to seal the 52-3 victory.

UP NEXT: UAB will plays its final home game of the season next Saturday, November 10, when it welcomes Southern Miss to Legion Field. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. on beIN Sports. A win next Saturday would clinch the Conference USA West Division title for the Blazers and secure them a spot in the C-USA title game on Dec. 1.

BIRMINGHAM – Legion Field has been home to some of the biggest moments in UAB’s football history, but none have been bigger than what was witnessed on Saturday night when Spencer Brown’s 17-yard touchdown in overtime secured the Blazers’ first-ever Conference USA West Division Championship with a 26-23 win over Southern Miss. Facing a 3rd-and-2 and trailing 23-20 in overtime, Brown took a handoff from Tyler Johnston III, exploited a gap and cruised into the end zone for the game-winning score, clinching UAB’s spot in the C-USA Championship game on December 1, its first appearance in the title game. The overtime victory was the Blazers’ first at Legion Field and the third in program history, while marking their first extra time win since topping Southern Miss, 50-49, in Hattiesburg on October 30, 2010. UAB’s (9-1, 7-0 C-USA) defense was simply incredible in the victory, holding Southern Miss to 29 yards of total offense in the second half and overtime to help secure the win, while breaking the school record for sacks in a single season with seven on the night, pushing its season total to 38. Mar’Sean Diggs finished the game with eight tackles and what could arguably be called the defensive play of the game with his inter-ception in the end zone with only seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime. Chris Woolbright added eight tackles as well, while Quindarius Thagard and Fitzgerald Mofor each added five. Five different Blazers notched sacks as part of the record-setting effort, paced by Tre’ Crawford’s three on the night. Crawford also came up with the sack that clinched the school record. Offensively, Johnston III finished the game 14-of-27 through the air for 207 yards and touchdown, while adding a rushing score. Brown continued his dominant play, finishing the game with 75 yards on 23 carries and the crucial overtime touchdown that sealed the Blazers’ victory. Brown’s 14th rushing touchdown of the season is a new program record. Redshirt senior Kailon Carter used a career night to guide the Blazers’ receiving corps, bringing in four passes for 92 yards and a touchdown. Xavier Ubosi had 55 yards on three receptions to compliment a 44-yard performance from Andre Wilson.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Southern Miss (4-5, 3-3 C-USA) got on the board first with the help of a 47-yard screen pass to Quez Watkins which set up the visitors in plus territory. Two plays later, quarterback Tate Whatley hit Watkins again for a 19-yard touchdown that put Southern Miss ahead, 7-0, with 6:09 to play in the first quarter. After picking off Johnson III deep in their own territory, the Golden Eagles marched the ball 69 yards on 12 plays looking to double its lead. However, the Blazer defense stepped up and limited the damage to a 33-yard field goal by Parker Shaunfield which extended the visitors’ advantage to 10-0. Similar to its previous scoring drive, the Golden Eagles could not unlock the Blazers’ defense near the end zone and settled for a 38-yard field goal to push the lead to 13-0. Needing a score and less than four minutes remaining in the half, the Blazers put together an impressive drive, highlighted by a big completion to Ubosi on third and long, to set up the Blazers inside the 10-yard line. Facing another critical third down, Johnston III went under center and powered his way into the end zone from a yard out to cut the lead to 13-7 with 40 seconds remaining in the first half. UAB was dominant in the third quarter, blanking Southern Miss, 13-0, to shift the momentum. After forcing a Southern Miss three-and-out and blocking the ensuing punt on the Golden Eagles’ opening drive, UAB got on the board with the help of a 32-yard field goal from Nick Vogel to close the gap to 13-10. The Green and Gold took their first lead of the game at the midway point of the third quarter when Johnston III connected with Carter for a 35-yard pass to cap off a five-play, 72-yard drive to put the Blazers ahead, 17-13. Another big defensive stop on the next UAB drive saw more points on the scoreboard after Vogel knocked in his second field goal of the quarter, this time from 30 yards, making the score 20-13. Southern Miss had -1 yard in the third quarter overall. However, the Golden eagles answered in a big way with 7:09 remaining in the game, connecting on two big third downs during an 11-play, 50-yard drive to tie the game up at 20-20 following a two-yard punch in from Steven Anderson. Late interceptions by both teams sent the game into overtime, where Southern Miss opened the scoring with a 37-yard field goal from Shaunfield. Knowing a touchdown would win the game, the Blazers ran two plays before Brown took a handoff and barreled into the end zone to seal the 26-23 victory. The win extended the nation’s fourth-longest home winning streak to 12 and helped the Blazers clinch back-to-back undefeated seasons in the friendly confines of Legion Field.

UP NEXT: UAB returns to action on November 17 when it begins a season-ending two-game road swing in College Station against Texas A&M. Kickoff between the Blazers and Aggies is slated for 6 p.m. on either ESPN or ESPN2.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Quarterback Tyler Johnston III threw for 306 yards and two touchdowns, but No. 25 UAB fell to Texas A&M on the road 41-20 Saturday night at Kyle Field. Johnston set career highs in passing attempts (39), completions (25) and yards (306), and led the UAB offense which compiled 417 total yards of offense. Spencer Brown added 80 rushing yards and a touchdown and moved into a tie for third place all-time in career rushing touchdowns with 25. Andre Wilson led the receivers with seven catches for 89 yards and two touchdowns, while Xavier Ubosi (81 yards) and Kailon Carter (78 yards) each added six catches. Despite the impressive offensive numbers, UAB (9-2) had three costly turnovers and also left points on the board with three missed field goals. The nation’s leaders in sacks, UAB was held to just one tonight and had four tackles for loss. The defense was paced by Fitzgerald Mofor with seven stops, while Broderick Thomas had six tackles, a pass breakup and a fumble recovery.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The game started off rocky for the Blazers as Wilson fumbled the opening kickoff which was returned 17 yards for a touchdown by Larry Pryor to give A&M a 7-0 lead on the first play of the game. UAB responded on the ensuing drive by going 75 yards on 10 plays and capped it with a 9-yard touchdown pass from Johnston III to Wilson to even the game at 7-7 at the 11:15 mark. The Aggies (7-4) went ahead 14-7 with 5:44 to go in the quarter on a 9-yard touchdown run by Trayveon Williams, his 12th of the season. A 34-yard field goal early in the second and an additional 1-yard rushing touchdown from Williams with :40 remaining in the half gave the Aggies a 24-7 lead at halftime. The Blazers moved the ball on the Aggies in the first half and ultimately outgained Texas A&M 217-181 in the first two quarters. Texas A&M tallied the only 10 points of the third quarter for a 34-7 lead after three, but UAB outscored the Aggies 13-7 in the final stanza which ultimately made the final score 41-20. UAB was impressive on third down, converting 10-of-16 for the game, and holding A&M to just 3-of-8. UAB also had the edge in time of possession (34:11-25:49). Williams, who is the SEC’s leading rusher, finished the game with 20 carries for 167 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Kellen Mond was 11-of-20 for 192 yards and two touchdowns, and his top target was Jace Sternberger who had four catches for 85 yards and two scores.

UP NEXT: The Blazers conclude the regular season next Saturday at Middle Tennessee with a chance to clinch home field advan-tage for the Conference USA Championship Game. Kickoff in Murfreesboro is at 2 p.m. on ESPN3.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – In a preview of next week’s Conference USA championship game, the UAB football team lost its regular season finale 27-3 to Middle Tennessee on Saturday afternoon at Floyd Stadium. UAB concludes the regular season at 9-3 overall and 7-1 in C-USA action, both of which are new school records. With the win, Middle Tennessee (8-4, 7-1 C-USA) clinched home field advantage for the title game which will be played next Saturday, Dec. 1 at 12:30 p.m. on CBS Sports Network. Dealing with multiple players not being able to play today, the Blazers had a rough day all around en route to their first conference loss of the year. MT outgained UAB 394-89 and registered seven quarterback sacks. Chris Woolbright finished the season as UAB’s leading tackler with 67 stops and led the team today with eight. UAB had two sacks and hit its season average of eight tackles for loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Blazers received the opening kickoff and took it 40 yards before Nick Vogel converted a 35-yard field goal. That would be the only points for UAB in the game and the Blazers headed into halftime trailing 13-3. Middle Tennessee’s Crews Holt converted 28 and 24-yard field goals on back-to-back Blue Raiders drives in the second quarter, and Brent Stockstill found Ty Lee on a 12-yard touchdown pass with 2:35 left in the half for Middle’s 13-3 lead heading into the break. After both teams stalled in the beginning of the second half, Middle Tennessee took its third possession 83 yards and capped it with another 12-yard touchdown pass by Stockstill, this time to Zack Dobson, for a 20-3 lead with 4:40 remaining in the third. Dobson added another touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 45-yard run to bring the score to 27-3, which would be the final points of the day.

UP NEXT: UAB will look to win its first-ever Conference USA title next Saturday in a rematch with the Blue Raiders. Tickets are available for the title game by clicking here.
