APPENDIX I: SAMPLE ABSTRACT

Title: Evidence-Based Practice Knowledge, Attitude, Access and Confidence of Dental Hygiene and Dental Students Victoria Santiago, Melissa Cardenas, Anne-Laure Charles, Estefany Hernandez, Udochukwu Oyoyo, So Ran Kwon Loma Linda University School of Dentistry, Loma Linda, CA Objectives: To evaluate the changes in knowledge, attitudes, evidence-accessing methods and confidence (KACE) of Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) in dental hygiene (DNHY) and third year dental students (D3) over a short term period at a U.S. dental institution. Methods: An Institutional Review Board (IRB) application was filed to confirm exempt status for this study (IRB #5160409). All students enrolled in the research design and applied statistics course completed the KACE survey distributed on their first day of class. At completion of the course, the KACE survey was distributed again to compare pre and post differences in knowledge, attitude, accessing evidence, and confidence on evidence-based practice between dental hygiene and dental students. Fisher’s exact test was used to evaluate knowledge and Friedman's test to assess attitude, access and confidence using the KACE assessment, all at α=0.05 significance level. Results: Both DNHY and D3 students demonstrated a statistically significant increase in knowledge and attitude (P < 0.05) while there was no significant change in confidence for both student groups (P > 0.05). Conclusion: Dental hygiene and dental students improved on their knowledge and their attitude towards EBP after taking a 12-week research design and applied statistics course. Results identified areas to improve in knowledge acquisition such as determining the level of evidence, analyzing study results, and determining appropriate study design needed. Ultimately, the results provide an EBP mapping guide for upgrading the dental hygiene curriculum to enhance students’ acquisition and application of EBP skills in their future career. Acknowledgement: The study was funded by the Loma Linda University School of Dentistry Student Research Program fund. Keywords: KACE, Dental Hygiene, Evidence-Based Practice *Presenting Author(s) All students listed.
