Greetings 4‐H Families!
It’s my most favorite time of the year! Fair time… A time for long days, fun competitions, and spending time with your family and friends making memories. I hope you learn to cherish this time as much as I do, as it’s something very few people get to experience.
The fair is how I started my 4‐H dreams. My friends were participating, and I begged my mom to let me join. I was fortunate along the way to have neighbors, leaders, and family friends help me develop the skills, and lend the animals needed so I could fully enjoy the fair experience.
I am so glad that all of you have this opportunity as well! I’d like to share a reminder as we all gear up for the big event:
Blue Ribbon Youth: It is important to remember that judging is a personal opinion and that evaluation will vary among judges. Graciously accepting constructive criticism is a life skill. Let’s remember that a 4‐H member is more important than a 4‐H project. A blue ribbon 4‐H member with a white ribbon chicken is more desirable than a white ribbon member with a blue ribbon chicken! Be a good sport! Learn from your experiences. Congratulate the winners, thank the volunteers and judges for their time, and hold your head high, because you did your best!
There is a TON of information in this newsletter about the fair. How to navigate advanced judging day, a list of volunteers needed, as well as a schedule for the 4‐H Foodstand (sign up and help your club cover their shift!). Please let us know if you have any questions!
On a side note, I wanted to share with you that I am leaving Extension shortly after the fair. My husband and I started a business, Brilliont Blooms, almost four years ago, and it is now time for me to be there full time. I have truly enjoyed working on your behalf, and look forward to seeing you again as I put my 4‐H volunteer hat back on.
Sincerely, Tami Gasch 4‐H Program Coordinator Extension Calumet County

4‐H LEADERS COUNCIL
LEADERS COUNCIL BOARD MEETING
The 4‐H Leaders Council Board will meet on Wednesday, August 14, at 7:00 pm at the FAIRGROUNDS, in the Fair Foodstand. Goals for the new year and calendar of events will be discussed. If you have ideas for events/project meetings you’d like to see on the calendar for next year, please send them to Tami at [email protected].
HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE JULY LEADERS BOARD MEETING
Officer elections were held:
President: Todd Roehrig
Vice President: Terri Mertz
Secretary: Jessie Jansen
Treasurer: Brian Lisowe was appointed
Board members agreed to form committees to plan for major 4‐H events and to recruit other volunteers to help. Meeting dates for the new year were established. Approved a special funding request from the Horse Project for $250 towards clinic fees.
SEMI‐ANNUAL 4‐H LEADERS COUNCIL MEETING
Wednesday, September 18 7:00 pm, Courthouse Room #25
All adult leaders and 4‐H members grades 9‐13 are voting members of the Calumet County 4‐H Leaders Council. Please consider attending this meeting to learn about the goals and plans for the next year.
LEADERSHIP
4‐H CLUB CHARTERS
At the Leaders Council Annual Meeting in April, the leaders present expressed an interest in having a Charter Workshop to help brainstorm SMART goals, get financial questions answered, and to just have an open discussion about the documents, and the requirements to include a goal about expanding access. If you are involved in filling out your club charter, please consider attending this meeting.
Tuesday, August 6 7:00 pm
Calumet County Courthouse Rm #017
4‐H CLUB OFFICER TRAINING
If your club is interested in officer training, please contact Tami to set up a session for your officers. This can be held an hour before your club meeting and can be beneficial for new officers to learn more about their duties before they take over the role. With clubs electing officers at different times of the year, and new officers taking over their roles at different times of the year, it has been difficult to find a time that works to set up a county‐wide training session.
COMMUNITY SERVICE
HANDS TO LARGER SERVICE, COMMUNITY SERVICE RECOGNITION
Calumet County 4‐H clubs and groups have a long history of providing service to our community through volunteerism and service projects. We would like to celebrate your contributions at the county fair this year, by having your service recognized in the youth building on the Giving Tree. There are no hours to commit to, or levels to achieve to be recognized. You just need to email your 4‐H related service activities to Tami by August 20. It would be awesome if each club could contribute to make the tree full and beautiful.

Take a photo or a “group selfie” at the fair of your club members and share it on the Calumet County Fair Facebook page.
FAIR FEES INCREASING
The Fair Board has increased the exhibitor fees to $5.00 for Junior Class Exhibitors and $10.00 for Open Class Exhibitors. Pen and stall fees at the Calumet County Fair has also increased: Rabbit and poultry cage fees are $1.00 each; and stall/pen fees for all other animals will be $3.00 each.
4‐H BOOTHS
4‐H clubs making their plans for the 2019 4‐H booth should keep in mind that the 4‐H theme for this year is “4‐H Helps You Dress for Success.”
The fair booth size is 5’ wide by 4’ deep by 8’ high. Some have an electrical outlet. Remember: each club wishing to reserve a booth must submit a fair entry by the July 31 deadline.
Important: No staples will be allowed.
PLEASE REMEMBER: 4‐H booths are a youth entry, so ONLY 4‐H members, not parents or leaders, should be putting the booth in place. We ask for all clubs' cooperation on this guideline, to make it a youth‐centered learning experience.
Please see the fairbook (Department 032) for a list of criteria that the booth will be evaluated on.
Booths may be put up on Tuesday, August 27, or Wednesday, August 28, from 10:00 am – 8:00 pm.

ADVANCED FAIR PACKET PICK UP
Fair exhibitor’s packets will be available for pick up on Wednesday, August 21, from 3:00‐6:00 pm at the Fair Secretary’s Office at the Fairgrounds.
THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE COMING TO ADVANCE JUDGING DAY ‐
AUGUST 24
Hopefully, you kept a copy or list of the items you listed on your Fair Entry Form. Use this list to help you remember what items you planned to bring. Read the Junior Class Fairbook exhibiting guidelines for each department that you are exhibiting in, for information on the date and time of judging, exhibit size requirements, and possible changes to hanger and displaying requirements. Judging will run from 9:00 am – 2:00 pm, with staggered half hour lunch breaks for judges. You can come at any time during the day, but know that the process will take time (30 minutes to 3 hours, depending on the number of exhibits). We strongly encourage families to make sure they arrive by 1:00 pm, as judging ends at 2:00 pm. Exhibitors must be in their final line by 2:00 pm. Late exhibits will not be judged face‐to‐face and may be marked down one or more placings.
ADVANCE JUDGING DAY INFORMATION
How to Enter Exhibits
Step 1 – Pick up your exhibitor’s packet at the Fair Secretary’s Office – packets will be
available for pick up on Wednesday, August 21, from 3:00‐6:00 pm or on Saturday,
August 24, beginning at 8:30 am This envelope includes your fair pass, a computerized
list of projects that have been entered, and your entry tags.
Step 2 – Attach the tags to your individual projects. This can be done at home or in the
Stanelle Building. (Make sure to use the correct tag for each project.) String will also be
provided if you cannot place a tag directly onto your project. The tags must be attached
to the project with tape, string, staples, rubber bands, etc. Please bring your own
supplies if attaching at the Fairgrounds.
Step 3 – After all tags are attached, find the appropriate areas to have your projects
judged (see page 13 for locations).
Judging
Judging is done on a first‐come, first‐served basis. Youth in CLOVERBUDS, will wait in line to be judged.
We use a NUMBER system for all of the other departments. Instead of sitting/standing in line for their turn, exhibitors will “take a number.” During the first hour of judging (9:00‐10:00 am), exhibitors must have their projects tagged and ready to be judged before they can take a number. After 10:00 am, exhibitors can collect their numbers before their projects are tagged. The volunteer clerks will call up the numbers in order to be judged. If someone is not there when their number is called, their number will be skipped and we’ll come back to it when they return.
After the articles have been judged, the clerk will record the placing on the judges’ sheets and display the project. Projects must stay at the fair until the release time at 6:00 pm on Monday, September 2. Exhibits that are removed early will forfeit their premiums.
Those participants who are exhibiting market animals, horticultural projects or with foods entries, exhibitor packets can be picked up on August 21, 24, or 29. For dairy, rabbits, poultry, and exotic animals, packets must be picked up before noon on August 30.
JUNIOR FAIR FACE‐TO‐FACE JUDGING
This type of judging allows for each exhibit to be judged on its own merit, rather than compared with other exhibits in the same class number. Exhibitors bring their exhibits to the judge and talk to the judge about them.
General Face‐to‐Face questions you may be asked:
What do you like most/least about your project?
What have you learned in doing this project?
What would you like to learn more about in the future, related to this project?
Where did you get the idea for this project? Who helped you?
What was the easiest/most challenging part of making this exhibit?
What would you do differently if you made the project again?

COUNTY FAIR
WHAT IF AN EXHIBITOR CANNOT BE PRESENT FOR
THEIR FACE‐TO‐FACE JUDGING?
It is preferred that the exhibitor prepares a 3”x5” card that describes the exhibit, what they did and what they learned. Another exhibitor, parent, or leader may sit in for brief judges’ comments. There is no automatic penalty for exhibitors who are not present for their judging. It is up to each judge to determine how the exhibitor’s absence will affect the placing awarded.
