2019-2020 SEASON // NASHREP

MANAGING DIRECTOR’S NOTE

Welcome to the 35th Anniversary Season of your Nashville Repertory Theatre! Whether this is your first time joining us at Nashville Rep, or if you are one of our many long time members, we are so glad you are here.

In this special season, we are celebrating Nashville Rep’s history of offering a wide range of programming, from small classic dramas, to hot new plays direct from New York, to large family musicals. The 35th Anniversary Main Stage Season offers a different experience with each title.

We are opening the season with Urinetown The Musical! This hilarious musical satire, which won several Tony Awards when it premiered on Broadway, continues to play all around the country every year, despite what has to be one of the least appealing titles in musical theatre history.

This fall, we will be offering Pipeline, a powerful drama from one of the country’s leading African American female playwrights. It’s the story of a mother’s love for her son, and the lengths to which she will go to move him forward when the systems around him are aligned in opposition.

This November, for one weekend only, we are excited to be bringing Every Brilliant Thing to the Nashville Rep stage. This uplifting show will take you on a journey, beginning with an adolescent boy’s first realization that not all is right within his family. The story of how he comes to name all the things that make life worth living is a unique, interactive evening in the theatre that you will not soon forget.

This year, we have a brand new production to celebrate the holidays! You know the title of A Christmas Carol, but you have not seen it performed like this. This new adaptation, created by Patrick Barlow (The 39 Steps), features just five actors playing a cast of 60 characters. It’s a lighthearted telling of the tale of Christmases Past, Present, and Future, suitable for the entire family. With puppetry, music, and costume changes galore, it’s also a magical love letter to the theatre and to the spirit of Christmas.

In the spring we are excited to offer the Tennessee William’s classic A Streetcar Named Desire. This production is a homecoming of sorts for the Rep, which was borne of another Tennessee Williams play, The Glass Menagerie, almost four decades ago.

Finally, we are closing the Main Stage season with the largest show we’ve produced in over a decade. We’ll be returning to TPAC’s Polk Theater for the musical Mary Poppins. Based on the classic Disney movie, this tale of the Banks children and their magical nanny will enchant theatergoers of all ages.

Of course, if you are a long time member of Nashville Rep, you know there is so much more happening than just the Main Stage Season. We are about to embark on our 11th season of the Ingram New Works Project, fostering the creation of new American plays from the first spark of imagination to the first public reading. And of course, the biggest event of the year, Broadway Brunch, will be back this year at City Winery in May.

We’ve also just launched one of the biggest enhancements to Nashville Rep’s programming in over a decade, the Nashville Rep Conservatory. Designed to engage theatergoers from age 7 all the way through college, this series of educational programs is open to young actors, singers, dancers, playwrights, and theatre technicians. The next Nashville Rep Conservatory event is coming up in November, when Jelani Alladin, one of the stars of Disney’s Frozen on Broadway will be joining us for a masterclass.

As you can see there is something for theatergoers of every age and interest in our 35th Anniversary Season, and that is by design. This year at the Rep, we are asking ourselves and the extended Nashville Rep family, “What does a theatre that is fully in service to its community look like?” We hope you will join us in this conversation throughout the year.

Again, thanks so much for joining us for our 35th Anniversary Season! We are so glad you are here, and we look forward to entertaining you, delighting you, amazing you, and moving you once again this year.

NASHVILLE REPERTORY THEATRE

DIRECTOR’S NOTE

Isn’t peeing great? I mean, it’s objectively awesome. When it’s all working correctly, our bodies filter out anything we don’t need from our food and drink and then usher it out in a daily ritual shared by every living human

on Earth. Seriously, can you imagine a world in which you couldn’t pee without paying for it? Well, Greg Kotis and Mark Hollman could — and boy is it bleak. Inspired by dystopias like 1984, Fahrenheit 451, and Blade Runner, Urinetown The Musical owes its tone, musical style, and Brechtian presentation to the musicals of the 1930s WPA like Marc Blitzstein’s The Cradle Will Rock and Kurt Weill’s seminal Threepenny Opera. This crazy little fringe musical was such a hit at the New York International Fringe Festival that it earned an Off-Broadway run and then a three-and-a-half year run on Broadway from 2001 to 2004, during which it played nearly 1,000 performances to wild ovations. Urinetown’s satirical depiction of government grift, capitalist greed, and social revolution shines a sharp and bright light at the power-hungry, the oppressive, the down-trodden, and the facilitators found in every system of government and economy the world has yet devised. Can a system ever be a pure good? Can a society

function without a power structure? Will the powerful always be corrupted? It’s hard not to want to ask these questions in our current political climate in the US. And what better way than with singing, dancing, and toilet plungers?

Creating a dystopia on stage is a whole lot of fun. And it’s made easier and more fun by being able to collaborate with artists such as Pamela Atha, Kelsi Fulton, Gary Hoff, Amanda Creech, Colleen Garatoni, Randy Craft, Dalton Hamilton, and Christopher Jones. Everything you’re going to see and hear tonight (and the stuff you’ve already seen) is made better by these talented people and the assistants, painters, carpenters, electricians, musicians, seamstresses (and seamsters), artists, and craftspeople who did the work. But that would all be pointless without a cast. And the 18 people who are going to perform for you in a couple of minutes (or perhaps already are) are some of the finest talents Nashville can offer.

I love storytelling with musical theater. We all do. And we’re glad you’re here to watch us tell this particular story. We really hope you enjoy it.

Now, make sure you pee before the house lights dim — you never know...
