    NEWS

    WELCOME HOME!

What better week for residents to move into their wonderful new home in the Eliza Palmer Hub than National Carers’ Week (10 - 16 June)? We know our award-winning care and nursing staff do an incredible job every day but during the move in particular everyone including our fantastic volunteers; Housekeeping & Portering team and Caretaker/Security Officer, Stefan, really went the extra mile to ensure residents were moved safely and given a VIP welcome into their new home.

Relative, Coral Harding said: “It all went so smoothly and everything was so well organised that residents were settled in their beautiful new rooms in no time....I just wanted to say how much my family and I appreciate all the hard work and thought that has gone into this wonderful facility.” (Read Coral’s letter in full on page 26.)

Gillian Lewis, whose mum Marjorie is Whiteley Village’s oldest resident at 107 said: “Mum and all the family were overwhelmed by the special efforts made by porters, carers, nurses and caterers on the day of the Great Move. Mum said: ‘It poured with rain but everyone was amazing!’ She particularly likes watching the builders at work while they finish the surroundings!” See Marjorie here (right), and below images of residents, staff and volunteers during the big move!

Top photo: Monica Goldsworthy, the very first resident to move into the Hub, being welcomed by Trust CEO Chandra McGowan and Shineeza Bender, Care Assistant Team Leader.

    NEW START FOR THE VILLAGERMAGAZINE

A NEW VILLAGER - LED MAGAZINE As you will have read, following the recent magazine survey, this is the last month that the Villager magazine as we know it, will be published. Many residents asked for a new publication led by villagers and so a group of us are forming a Magazine Committee which will create and edit our own magazine (produced by the people for the people), which will be printed by the Trust. We’re looking for others with ideas and, probably more importantly, villagers who are willing to contribute their skills towards the creation of this new fun publication. Anyone with know-how in magazine editing, layout, proofreading, photographic skills etc are invited to join. We are looking at September as our first publication date and obviously need others to join our group so that we can see if we have the skills and time between us to make our magazine a great success. If you are interested and think you’d like to join us, please contact me on 01932 542571. Trish Maley

This edition of the magazine is appropriately themed fond farewells and exciting new beginnings, as Whiteley House closes and its residents settle in into the Eliza Palmer Hub, but also because this is the last edition of the Whiteley Villager in its current form - in preparation for the launch of two new publications for residents.

As we explained in the last magazine, most respondents to our reader’s survey said they wanted us to separate Trust news from that about, and from villagers. A group of residents expressed an interest in setting up a new resident-led publication and following discussions with them, the Trust has agreed to print this free of charge. (See Trish Maley’s article below for more details.)

The Trust will still have important news and information to share with you all however, and so we will be launching a short monthly newsletter which will include the Diary and Directory, plus updates from Volunteering, the Care Partnership Forum and the Whiteley Foundation. It is expected that both the Trust and the resident’s publications will be launched in September.

There will not be a magazine in August, but we will still publish the Diary and other important information for residents that month. We are always looking to improve our communications with you, which is why the reader’s survey was so crucial and we hope you will enjoy these new publications as much as we and the new Magazine Committee are looking forward to producing them for you!

    NEWS

The Lantern Café, our brand new coffee shop in the Eliza Palmer Hub will be an exciting addition to the Village when it opens at the end of July. We look forward to welcoming you there and I hope that you will enjoy relaxing and sharing a drink, snack or light lunch with neighbours, family and friends.

The Café will be open from 8.00am to 4.00pm daily and will be offering a full range of hot and cold beverages, sweet and savoury snacks, cakes and pastries plus a range of freshly prepared sandwiches, wraps and paninis and our homemade soup of the day.

With seating for 60 people indoors there will be a mixture of seating at tables with the addition of more casual sofas, plus outdoor seating for around 30 people.

The standard pricing to visitors will be similar to that of a high street coffee shop, but I am very pleased to announce that we will be extending the 20% discount (currently enjoyed by all village residents on food at the Clubhouse), to all prepared food and drink items within the Lantern Café. This will include all hot beverages and all sandwiches, wraps, paninis and soup.

We have spent a lot of time planning the offering for the Café to ensure that as much as possible we are catering for all tastes, but as with any new venture, feedback is crucial to ensure that we continue to offer what people really want.

So please do come along and let us know what you think and will endeavour to cater for your wishes.

    Phil Baker Head of Hospitality

We are delighted to announce a new project to investigate transitions in older age, to be based here in the Village. The research, in collaboration with the University of Surrey, and funded by The Pargiter Trust, will consider the experiences of transitions such as moving into the village, retiring from paid work, changes in health, moving within the village, and bereavement. The aim is to understand how such changes affect individuals and how changes can be more smoothly managed by everyone involved.

This is an exciting project, and we are very grateful to The Pargiter Trust for providing enough funding (over £75,000) for us to bring a researcher to the village for 18 months to work on this. We are also delighted to partner with Dr Kim Smith and Professor Andrew King from the University of Surrey, who bring their expertise to the project. This is precisely the type of project The Foundation is here to instigate and support – projects that help Whiteley Village residents and staff and enable us to share our learning to help older people everywhere.

Please keep an eye out for future communications about the project, especially when we will be asking you, the residents to share your valuable experiences.

Resident Daryl Selbie was bursting with pride when she learnt recently that her daughter Gail - or to give her her full title: Flight Serjeant Gail Lawrence - was to be recognised in this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours for her service to the Royal Air Force (RAF).

Daryl said: “Gail has been in the RAF for 29 years now and will be awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, which is apparently similar to the OBE. She hasn’t received her medal yet but it will have pride of place on her uniform alongside her other service medals. She’s currently a Flight Serjeant but her next step will be to become a Warrant Officer.”

Gail (pictured here at last year’s RAF centenary celebrations), works at RAF High Wycombe and lives with her husband who also works for the RAF near Marlow.

Gail is pretty busy in her free time too, says Daryl: “She plays golf for the RAF and has just won her first major tournament. She also helps disabled children learn to swim and has passed all her teaching certificates for this as well. I am so incredibly proud to be her mother - and I can’t believe she has been away from home for 29 years!”

This month has been a bumper month for volunteering at Whiteley Village and I wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you to all of you who have given so much of your time to help with all the usual activities but also the special events that have been going on. Firstly, thank you to Colleen Howard and her team for putting on a beautiful farewell party for Whiteley House and its residents. Her creative skills were put to good use and the food, decorations and atmosphere were a delight!

Secondly, thank you to those who helped at Whiteley Races – it was lovely to see so many children and adult runners enjoying Whiteley Village and thank you for making them feel so welcome. Finally, to all those volunteers who came into the Eliza Palmer Hub during the resident move to help with refreshments, driving the bus, moving people’s possessions and everything in between – thank you so much. We couldn’t have done it without you!

    MY STORY: COLLEEN HOWARD

    A BIRD IN THE HAND!

I moved into the village six years ago. The Matron at the time, Hilary Harding, encouraged me to come and do some volunteering in the Care Centre. I started by pouring teas and coffees for the residents, and slowly over the past few years have graduated to doing between 25-35 hours a month, playing cards, dominoes, bagatelle and relieving staff on switchboard and reception and anything that needs doing!

Residents, their families and staff have become my good friends. I wake up every day with a purpose knowing that each day a smile, a helping hand, a chat or gesture will make a difference in somebody’s life.

As part of all the planning for the ‘big move’ into the Hub, it was decided that the Care Centre - our `Grand Old Majestic Lady` deserved a proper send-off before the residents finally moved out, and I was privileged to be asked to help organise it.

I thought we needed a bright, bold and happy farewell party to say goodbye and thank you for a century of service to our Whiteley community was needed. What a blast!!

About 75-80 people, residents, relatives, current staff, past management and volunteers enjoyed a wonderful evening saying goodbye.

Recently, our residents were moved to the new Eliza Palmer Hub; a mammoth task undertaken and executed both expertly and efficiently by Pam Hall, our Transition Director and her team; our Director of Care, Rachel Hill and her amazing team; and Laura Cole the Volunteer Co-ordinator and her team. The move went extremely smoothly with a happy and excited vibe throughout the day. The excited and happy faces of the residents made it all worthwhile!

It remains for me to say, “ a HUGE big thank you” to Chandra, our CEO, the Trustees and village management for our unique and beautiful place to reside!! I feel truly blessed!

    TOPICS OF INTEREST

  • July 2019 11

The deer that we are sometimes lucky to see in Whiteley Woods are Reeves muntjac deer. They were originally imported from China to Woburn Park around the 1890’s and since then have spread right across the southern England. Because we are surrounded on all sides by roads, rather than the deer naturally spreading here, it is possible that the original owners of what is now the Whiteley Estate deliberately introduced them to enhance the parkland. The story, though, is now lost in time.

Muntjacs are about the size of a medium large dog, weigh about the same and live for around 10 years. While the males of our native species of deer have large antlers which they use to fight for females (the rut), muntjac deer have only short antlers and fight using long canine teeth. Female deer (does) are capable of breeding at seven months old. After a gestation period of seven months, they give birth to a single kid and are ready to mate again within a few days. They have no particular mating season. I’m beginning to wonder why the woods are not full of deer, but let’s move swiftly on from that thought.

Villagers living in Drapers may hear strange barking noises around dawn and dusk, rather like the cry of a dog fox. This cry gives the muntjac its common name of the barking deer. Last summer was particularly dry so foraging was not easy for our deer, so they came very close to Drapers back gardens and ate what they could find.

The woods support a small population of muntjacs, who mainly feed on ivy, bramble, coppice shoots, flowers and seeds of many plants, also fruit, nuts, dead leaves, and fungi. Walking through the woods last year I came across and, sadly, disturbed a doe and her kid who were laying up resting in a bed of bracken which the mother had made. They ran away and disappeared in moments. This brought home to me how important it is that dogs are kept on leash in our woods because they might give chase.

    WILDLIFE FEATURE Deer POEMS

Love FlowerLove is a flower which grows in the Spring,

and blooms in the warmth which summertime brings.

Kissed by the dew in the dark of night,

embraced by sun in the morning light.

Radiant and bright in the heat of noon,

steeped in the aura of heady perfume.

It must be cherished throughout the long day,

lest someone false should steal it away.

Withdrawn in the face of the evening chill,

it must be allowed to be quiet and still.

And when with Autumn, the colours fade,

it should be left in peace and shade.

Through Winter’s frost though cold, and long,

made safe and warm to keep it strong.

So when the sun returns in the Spring,

the flower will awaken, and blossom again.

    Bryan Brown

At Peace Comfortably sitting by the fireside,

    Relaxed, drowsy and warmly dreaming.

Watching shadows on the ceiling glide,

In shapes without form or meaning.

    Flames dancing their spiky dance,

To a tune of burning embers.

    Tranquil, euphony will enhance,

And my soul to this I render.

The day’s events are left behind,

The drudge of living leaves me.

My eyes closing with my mind,

Kind sleep, now Lord, I see thee.

Walking with WisdomWe cannot find God in noise and agitation. Nature: trees, flowers and grass grow in silence. The stars, the moon and the sun move in silence. What is essential is not what we say but what God tells us and what He tells us through others. In silence He listens to us; in silence He speaks to our souls. In silence we are granted the privilege of listening to His voice:Silence of our eyes; Silence of our ears Silence of our mouths; Silence of our minds.

In the silence of our heart God will speak. Silence of the heart is necessary so you can hear God everywhere - in the closing of the door, in the person who needs you, in the birds that sing, in the flowers, in the animals. If we are careful of silence it will be easy to pray.

Apologies if there is no update from your club or societies this month, it is due to non-submission prior to deadline.

    CLUBS & SOCIETIES

    ARCHERY CLUB

Things are moving along nicely, with a cabinet to store our ever-increasing equipment and agreement (thank you welfare fund) for a third target to support the steadily increasing number of archers. We are now an official Archery GB club! A useful start to registering those members who want to explore the opportunity of using an outdoor range opposite RHS Wisley owned by another club. We always start with a ‘have- a-go’ session at our regular Tuesday shoot (11.00 am in the Hall) so if you want to try archery out – very good for posture and fun anyway – please come along.

    Paul Milling

    BOWLS CLUB

The Club is enduring good turnouts on Tuesday afternoon roll-ups with a lot of fun had by all. Results of inter club matches are not as good as anticipated. So far this season we have won 1, drawn 1 and lost 2. However, don’t be disheartened, we are not halfway through the season yet. Injury to two of our mainstream players is unfortunate and it looks like they may be out for the rest of the season. Here’s hoping they have a speedy recovery.

We are still having problems with the green, but the patches appear to be recovering, albeit very slowly. By the time this magazine is published we will

have celebrated our centennial year. Three Clubs, those being Mayford Hall, Oatlands and Addlestone, will each be partaking in a “round-robin” against WV Bowls Club on the 27th June which will culminate in a social gathering in our Club house after the games. Past, Honorary and all members of WVBC will be included to partake in the celebration. All that remains is to wish all our bowlers’ good luck for the rest of the season, keep on BOWLING.

    CAMERA CLUB

On Saturday, 18th May we had an outing to New Romney in Kent where we boarded one of the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch one third scale steam trains that would take us to Dungeness for refreshments and further photo opportunities. Everyone said they enjoyed a day out with a difference. Wednesday, 5th June was competition day with Cliff Bolton passing judgment on our “Glass” entries, although we had less entries than usual Cliff was complimentary on the quality. The next competition is “Church Architecture” inside and out including the grounds, if possible to include a close up. The register for entries in the Village Day exhibition is now complete. Our next meeting is on Wednesday, 3rd July at 2.00pm in the Activity Centre. This is the last chance to bring photos for Village Day so please don’t miss out.

    CHARITY & FURNITURE SHOPS

How bad weather can ruin even the best laid plans – or is it just Murphy’s law? We have had both against us in the Charity Shop in the past couple of months. In late March you may remember that wonderful week or so of hot weather. We moved out all our winter stock and delved into Paul’s cupboard, brought out some of our lovely new summer stock and the showroom took on a bright new look.

The winter weather returned with a vengeance and sales dropped! Oh dear! This has to be Murphy’s Law!

By May you had all lost interest but with the promise of some good weather we removed the summer stock from the rails into recycling and put up another really nice range. And yes you’ve guessed – this latest cold and rainy weather arrived only days later! Murphy’s Law hits again!

However, undaunted we have boxes of summer clothes left we will put out for Village Day. We plan to put them out a week before to give you all a chance for a viewing before the crowds arrive. Here’s to a really successful and happy Village day for everyone.

In the furniture shop we often have items of wooden furniture that would benefit from a little restorative TLC. I was wondering if there was anyone

who would be interested in starting a restoration club, nothing too arduous, perhaps a little sanding, polishing or a coat of paint. If you are interested, please let us know. We continue to be busy, with plenty of people popping in and plenty of sales. Come and visit, we would love to see you, even if you don’t buy anything.

    FRIENDSHIP CLUB

We have now held both our introductory meeting and our first AGM. Our committee was elected with Nick Henderson as Chair, Dee Marnewick as Secretary and Gill Lindley as Treasurer. Attendance at the introductory meeting was 28 people and 18 at the AGM (a very wet evening). Our first active events programme will start in July and be emailed to all club members. All residents of Whiteley Village are welcome to the weekly gathering to discuss future events and socialise, it takes place at 7:00pm every Wednesday evening at the Activity Centre. Tea and coffee are provided (please bring anything else you would like to drink). Members are encouraged to discover and let us know about events that they think would be enjoyable. The club can be contacted by email at: [email protected]

We look forward to meeting you as a new member.

    GOLF CLUB

Putters reign supreme. The long awaited match between

the Putters and the Golfers took place on the 31st May – 18 Golfers v 18 Putters, the match was won by the Putters who were excellent hosts, many thanks to Sid and Viv and their team for a most convivial afternoon.

July is a busy month for Golfers:

Friday, 12th July @ 4.00pm WV Golfers v WV Cricketers - NB Cancelled due to Cricketers’ other commitments – New date to be advised!

Saturday, 20th July @ 1.30pm come along and support our WVGC Stall, Hole in One, Whisky Hole – all contributions very welcome.

    Friday, 26th July @ 2.00pm – Nearest the Pin.

Watch the Golf Notice Board outside the shop for relevant lists. The rain has been a major deterrent for Golfers over the last few weeks, beam up there folks it can’t last forever!

    LIBRARY

Firstly, a very big thank you to all the volunteers who have worked so tirelessly in Whiteley House these many years. Of course, most of all to Patty Cockburn who has had her finger on the needs of all our readers there for so many years. Thank you, Patty, for all your hard work. With all the moving in the village, Whiteley Library has had to close and all the books removed to our main library – now our only library. This past weekend we received about 600 books from Whiteley – thank you Tony for all your work too, and then another donation of about 150 books from a library in Suffolk.

As a result, we have many new

books in stock. From Clive Cussler to M C Beaton to Alan Bennett. Small and large print. Please do come in and have a browse. For new villagers who may not know, everything in the library is free and there are no fines. We put books outside our door on the trolley when we are open and for those, we would like a donation please.

I also have several games and in particular many different versions of Trivial Pursuit. If someone would like to start a club, please fetch the games from the library. I can’t afford the space for games so if they are not collected, they will be sold on Village Day. Hoping to see you in the library soon.

    LINE DANCE CLUB

Another month over, and we are enjoying the lighter evenings - in spite of holidays we love our Sunday dances. We did do some demonstrations for Village Day in the good old days, happy memories!

    MAHJONG

The game of Mahjong is enjoyable and challenging, it can also become addictive!! If you think you might like to give it a go come along to the Activities Centre on a Tuesday afternoon 1.45pm to start at 2pm, you would be most welcome. PUTTING REPORT

Once again it is pouring with rain as I type this report! We seem to be jinxed on Monday and Friday afternoons! However, we were very lucky on the Friday that we played the Golfers. The weather stayed fine and dry. Sadly for the Golfers we beat them, but it was very close, and also, as someone pointed out, we Putters do get to practice twice a week!! What a fun Club they are though. Do hope they had a good afternoon. The enjoyable and challenging game was followed by a Ploughman’s Tea, which hopefully was enjoyed by everyone. As compensation for them losing we did lay on a Fly Past of seven army helicopters, which stopped play for a good few minutes! We assumed they were practising for President Trump’s arrival at Windsor Castle! We are hoping to have another Return Match with the Golfers before the end of season - time and weather

permitting. That is all my news for now. We are just praying for summer to arrive, so we can get on with putting before the end of the season in October!! Some of our Members haven’t even managed to play a single game yet!

Our Street Party on 6th June to commemorate 75 years since the D-Day Landings was a great success. There were over 90 people present, lots of laughter and nostalgia with our lovely singer ‘The Melody Gal’. My grateful thanks to all who assisted and especially at the end where there was such a whirlwind of activity that I am not sure who or how many were involved but a very big Thank You to you all! Our June meeting was rather depleted due both to the weather and the fact that we could not transport our Huntley House residents and others dependent

on transport due to the `Big Move’! I hope to see you all at the next meeting on Monday, 8th July at 10.00am for 10.30am in the Conservatory.

    EVENTSEVENTS

Whiteley House residents and their families, were joined by volunteers and staff past & present on 4th June at a celebration party to say a fond farewell to this much loved place and to look forward to their move into the Hub.

Resident, Shirley Smith said “A big THANK YOU to Colleen and her team for all the hard work they put in to make the Whiteley House celebration party such a success.

The old dining room looked beautiful. It was good to meet up with staff members especially the ones we’d not seen for years and the volunteers who had contributed so much to the welfare of the residents who had made Whiteley Care Centre home in their latter years”.

Here are a few photos of the party - read more about this special event on pages 8 and 10.

The British Legion pulled out all the stops to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the D-Day landings on Thursday, 6th June here in Whiteley Village.

For those of us who remember the street parties it really was an afternoon of nostalgia down to the flags, music and recordings of Winston Churchill and his memorable voice and messages, and of course our very own wartime veteran Roy Lavender and his wife Millie in attendance.

Sandwiches and cakes, tea and coffee, we didn’t have Barbeques of course back in the day, a very modern invention, and the ration books wouldn’t run to sausages, whoever heard of beef burgers back in the day?

A Big Thank You to the British Legion team led by Margaret van Stryp. The hard work and dedication in erecting the gazebos, setting up the tables and chairs etc. we all take for granted. Thank you to all involved. We should never forget!

Do join us for our regular discussion group, where we take the time to think more deeply about an aspect of growing older and living in the Village. The discussions are friendly and confidential, and this month we will be talking about tolerance. Things we might think about are: do you think you’ve become more or less tolerant as you’ve got older? What do you find intolerable? How does it feel when others aren’t tolerant of you? Through the job interview process he stumbles into an elevator that takes him to the Park Avenue penthouse of billionaire businessman Phillip (Cranston) a quadriplegic after a hang-gliding accident who needs 24-hour care and a carer.

Nicole Kidman plays Philip’s personal assistant and is not in favour of hiring Dell who clearly isn’t qualified for the job, but Phillip likes his edge and attitude compared to the boring more suitable applicants ... and hires him on the spot.

The Upside is about the unlikely friendship between a quadriplegic billionaire and a felon hired to care for him. Based on a true story the characters start out as stereotypes - wealthy older man grants opportunity to ex-con - but, through their friendship, they develop insight and empathy for their separate struggles.

The two characters grow closer amidst speeding in fast cars...chased by police and parasailing. Often very funny & poignant, discovering positive, life-changing opportunity amid tragedy.

A great movie so come and join us on Wednesday 10th July at 2pm in the Village Hall.

    A BIG Thank You ...

to the Trust’s Bus Driver Peter (and his wife) for organising the trips to Windsor Great Park this week. The Queen and her guests alight from their cars there and into the Coaches, which then depart for Ascot Racecourse. I believe the first trip was a bit damp but our bus (expertly driven by the ever helpful volunteer Richard) dropped us at exactly the right spot to set up our delightful picnic provided by Peter and his wife and luckily the weather held. The Police men and women, Windsor Park staff and Coach footmen/women made a point to chat to us. The transition from car to coach was very quick, but we managed a few photos of Royals and Guests. What a fun and happy day. Thanks again to the drivers, Peggy Ruff and those that helped with chairs, food, umbrellas etc.

    LETTERS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Many thanks to Linda Roth for her assistance with the bus services during the Whiteley Races Event and the Eliza Palmer Hub move.

The Events Team and the Transition Team

I would like to express my deepest appreciation to Michael Smith for taking the time to tidy up the workshop in the Activity Centre. It was a very difficult task.

    Bernadette Ayer

It is with very great pleasure that I am writing to thank all Management, staff and volunteers for the way in which they handled the transitional move of residents from Whiteley House to the Eliza Palmer Hub on Tuesday, 11th June. It all went so smoothly and everything was so well organised that residents were settled in their beautiful new rooms in no time at all.

All of this obviously did not happen without a great deal of planning by all concerned and nothing had been overlooked. Every member of staff and volunteers, no matter what their position, was there to offer a welcoming smile, kind words of reassurance and encouragement to the residents and a very willing helping hand where needed.

For those of you who have not had the opportunity to visit The Hub thus far, you are in for a fantastic surprise - it is amazing and I just wanted to say how much my family and I appreciate all the hard work and thought that has obviously gone into this wonderful facility within the Village.

    Coral Harding, Relative.
