A Cadet is the most important person in our business; without him, we do not have a school.

A Cadet is not dependent upon us; we are dependent on him.

A Cadet is not an interruption of our work; he is the purpose of it.

A Cadet and his family do us a favor when they enroll; we are not doing them a favor by serving them.

A Cadet is an integral part of our business, not an outsider.

A Cadet is not a statistic; he is a person with feelings and emotions like our own.

A Cadet is learning to be a man; we should be role models in decorum and demeanor.

A Cadet is deserving of the most courteous and attentive treat-ment we can give him.

A Cadet is the lifeblood of this school. If we don’t provide this level of service, someone else will.

Remember the Cadet

2019 Summer Camp Parade & Graduation

Summer Camp »» 6

Three hundred and ninety-six young men completed the summer camp program beginning June 29, 2019 and ending with the Marine Military Academy Summer Camp Graduation Parade on July 27, 2019. Though the morning weather was hot and still, it did not keep more than 400 people from turning out. Parents, siblings and other family members proudly watched and applauded the campers during pass in review.

After the parade, a graduation ceremony was held in front of the company barracks. The drill instructors congratulated all of the young men before their family members and friends. They also recognized the campers who earned the Honor Man,

Most Improved and the Commandant’s Achievement awards.

When it was all over the campers hugged their family and friends and prepared to part ways with their new friends. Phone numbers and social media accounts were exchanged with their “brothers” before heading home. There were campers from 11 countries and 42 states that participated in the 2019 MMA Summer Camp.

Parents Quotes

“What an amazing experience for all of these plebes to cadets! Our boy wants to return for school he simply loved it!”

- Jan Ange

“Our now- college sophomore son did his own investigating and approached us about allowing him to go to MMA. It was the best experience for him. We are so grateful that we listened to our 15 year-old regarding his future. Not many kids would be as smart as he was in that decision, but we are very pleased with the impact MMA had on his life. MMA is a great place.”

-Linda Taft Medina

“Thank you so much for the support, care and everything! My son will remember this unique experience for the rest of his life! God bless you all! Thank Sergeant Major Brian Olea!”

-Beatriz Ramirez Cabrera

“Thank you ALL! Our son had the experience of a lifetime!”

New Cadet Leaders Named

2019 Plebe Graduation Parade

They walked onto the parade grounds as “plebes” and walked off as cadets. Nearly 54 young men officially joined the Marine Military Academy Corps of Cadets at the Introductory Training Graduation Parade on September 14.

At the parade, the plebes took the MMA Cadet Oath and then joined

the MMA battalion as cadets. They marched alongside their company “brothers” in the parade pass in review.

Following the parade, the new cadets assembled in front of their barracks for an informal recognition ceremony.

51st Birthday Ball

Family members, friends and alumni celebrated with the Marine Military Academy Corps of Cadets at the 54th Birthday Ball on November 2.

Per tradition, 54th Birthday Ball cake was carried in by the cadet battalion staff consisting of Cadet 1stLt Adam R. Myers, Cadet SgtMaj Adrian Blanco Valencia, Cadet 2nd Lt Brian J. Bearie Jr., Cadet GySgt Carter J. Gibney and then sliced by Col Dowling.

The first piece of cake was served to the Guest of Honor, Mr. Memo Montemayor, a 2002 graduate of Marine Military Academy, who is a managing partner of the largest private charter airplane company in the southern United States.

Montemayor was brought to MMA from his native Saltillo, Mexico, when he was just 13 to attend summer camp. He loved the experience so much he asked to attend the academy for his

high-school education. He became Golf Company’s commander during his senior year.

A f t e r g r a d u a t i n g f ro m M M A , Montemayor moved to San Antonio, Texas to attend the University of the Incarnate Word. In 2006, he was offered a position at Merrill Lynch – where he had been an intern for a year. His true calling, though, was in aviation. He was passionate about that industry since a young age. That drove him

Page 11: 2019 -20 Giving Report & Year in Review

to leave Merrill Lynch and move back to Mexico to secure a position with a private aviation company. Montemayor became president of that company. During his tenure he grew their fleet from four to 25 aircraft. He also co-founded a regional, commercial airline and began his own aircraft sales and acquisition firm. After eight years in the Mexican aviation industry, he decided to venture into the United States aviation market.

He settled in San Antonio and invested in a small private charter operation. That company’s fleet grew from one

aircraft to seven in less than two years. Montemayor later sold his shares and went on to become partner in the largest private charter company in the southern United States – Wing Aviation. Montemayor now manages Wing Aviation’s business development ventures.

The company now boasts a fleet of 33 aircraft and has a global presence. Memo lives in Houston with his wife Claudia, and their 2-year old daughter Emilia.

The second piece of cake was served

to MMA’s youngest cadet, Cadet PFC Octavio Baeza-Terrazas who was Born in Nuevo Casas Grandes, Mexico and now lives in Houston, TX.

The mother-and-son dance immediately followed the ceremony and kicked off the evening dance. This formal event celebrates MMA’s birthday (September 9, 1965) and the U.S. Marine Corps’ birthday (November 10, 1775).

January 2020 Mid-Term Registration

Marine Military Academy welcomed more than 50 students at mid-term registration on January 11. These young men started 2020 at a new school and a new home!

New students or “plebes.” begin Introductory Training immediately after check-in. They go through in-processing and quickly begin learning

the MMA routine and drill. Plebes must also spend their first few weekends participating in physical training, and outdoor activities and challenges in the “Back 40”.

All plebes become official MMA cadets once they graduate from Introductory Training one month later.

High & Tight

All new students, or “plebes,” at Marine Military Academy receive a “high and tight” introductory buzz cut. After the first haircut, cadets can wear their hair closely cropped. Below are some transformation photos from mid-term registration.

This year MMA lost a long-time member of their fam-ily. James Michael “Coach Mike” Morton passed away of natural causes on February 25

SgtMaj. William Edward Steigerwald, passed away into Jesus open arms on March 22,2020. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Mary Katherine. They were devoted to each other.

William, 'Bill' was born in Dayton, Kentucky on May 2, 1925 to parents, Frank & Stella Steigerwald during the height of the Great Depression; Bill was the youngest of 6 children.

SgtMaj William E. Steigerwald, enlisted into the U.S. Marine Corps in 1943 at 17 years of age, after WWII began. After basic training he was sent for training in Radar Operations. He was sent overseas to New Caledo-nia, the Solomon Islands & Okinawa, Japan. SgtMaj Steigerwald was one of 'The Greatest Generation', who served this Country during WWll in the Pacific & hit the beach at Okinawa, Japan.

In 1952 SgtMaj. married Mary Bowen whom he met in Cincinnati on leave. They had 5 children, William David in 1953, Stephen James in 1955, Rita Marie in 1956, Catherine Louise in 1958, and Christopher Paul in 1962.

In 1959, after 16 years in the U.S. Marine Corps, he was promoted to Sergeant Major (SgtMaj.), the highest rank for any enlisted Marine.

SgtMaj. Steigerwald retired in 1967 after 24 years serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. In 1969 he joined the Marine Military Academy and spent another 34 years at MMA which included Alumni Director at the Marine Military Academy. In 1971 he became SgtMaj. of the Marine Military Academy. He spent most of his time at MMA helping cadets and DI's & was also the coach of the boxing team as well as the PFT (Physical Fitness Training). MMA's PFT qualified for the Nationals in Washington, DC. for 5 years. He was so proud when his son, Stephen, won the top individual award and a $2,000 scholarship in 1973. SgtMaj had 2 sons, William (Bill), graduated in 1972 & Stephen (Steve) in 1973. His 3 sons enlisted into the Marine Corps & Air Force after graduating school as well as 1 of his daughters. SgtMaj. and Mary were also proud of their 18 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren and still growing.

SgtMaj. William Edward Steigerwald mellowed as the grandchildren came and was better known by all for his smile and laughter. He was a fisherman, an artist, a writer, a gardener, a coach, a U.S. Marine SgtMaj., a husband, a dad & a devoted Catholic. He was loved by hundreds. We will miss all of him.

Sgt Maj. William Edward Steigerwald

The Morton family moved to Harlingen, Texas in 1969 when his dad became part of the MMA family. Mike graduated from the Marine Military Academy in 1972. While at MMA, he excelled in football, playing both of-fense (halfback) and defense (cornerback), basketball, and track. He was also captain and MVP his junior and senior year in all sports. “Coach Mike’s” athletic talent led him to attend Texas A&I on a football scholarship.

After college, Mike began coaching and teaching, which would become the passion of his life. He coached track and football at San Benito and ultimately returned to MMA in 1987 where he joined his father, “Big Coach,” his brother, “Coach Tom,” and the Marine Military Academy coaching staff. Coach Mike spent the next 33 years at MMA guiding young men both in the classroom and on the field. Known for his sense of humor, outrageous wit, and charismatic way of storytelling, he would affection-ately be addressed as “Coach Mike” by his students and players for the rest of his life.

Mid-Term Plebe Graduation »» 26

Thirty-nine young men officially joined the Marine Military Academy Corps of Cadets on February 8.

At the parade in front of proud family members and friends, the young men took the official oath of an MMA cadet and then pinned the Marine Corps

insignia to their covers. They then joined the MMA Corps of Cadets in the parade and marched in unison as fully fledged cadets.

After the graduation parade, the young men enjoyed their first weekend of liberty with their family and friends.

27 «« Leadership Forum

This year Marine Military Academy had two guest speakers for the 2020 Leadership Forum on February 28th. The first speaker was MajGen David Garza USMC (Ret) who opened with a lecture on leadership to the MMA Corps of Cadets. He began with “Courage is a learned behavior and it starts with the thinking process.”

This three-time war veteran (Vietnam, Gulf and Afghanistan) introduced the “Mirror Test” to the Marine Military Academy Corps of Cadets. MajGen Garza first identified the 14 Marine Corps Leadership Traits:● Judgement ●Justice ● Dependability● Integrity ●Decisiveness ●Tact● Initiative ●Enthusiasm ●Bearing● Unselfishness ●Courage ●Knowledge● Loyalty ●EnduranceMajGen Garza then asked the cadets to answer two questions in front of the

mirror and answer them honestly: 1) Do I represent these values and 2) Am I upholding the standards? A person who demonstrates all the leadership traits, in his daily activities will earn the respect, confidence and cooperation of others. The second guest speaker was Maj Josh Glover, USMC (Ret). Maj Glover served as a Marine officer for ten years. He led Marines during four combat deployments, including one deployment to Afghanistan with 2nd Marine Raider Battalion and three deployments to Iraq with 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment.

Maj Glover joined nCino, a cloud banking company, early in the firm’s first year and has filled a variety of roles as nCino has grown into an Inc. 500 member.

He currently leads nCino’s North A m e r i c a n s a l e s a n d a c c o u n t management organization. Maj Glover is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and holds an MBA from Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business. Born and raised in Dallas, TX, Josh now lives in Wilmington, NC with his wife and three children.

He closed the lecture with three key pieces of advice for the Marine Military Academy Corps of Cadets. First, is to be present. Your journey begins now and to get where you want to be, you need to be great where you are now.

The second was to focus on what you can change and let go of the things that you cannot control. “Time wishing things were different, is time wasted.” said Maj Glover. His third and final piece of advice was to remember that you are always in charge of your attitude. Maj Glover finished the lecture with a poem.

In attendance were four moderators, both active duty and retired. They were Major Timothy Lynch, USMC (Ret), First Sergeant Jeffery Williams, USMC, Colonel Jeff Kenney, USMC (Ret) and Sergeant Major Michael Ryan, USMC. MMA Board of Trustees member Mr. Robert Dunkin was in attendance as well.

Iwo Jima Parade »» 30

The Battle of Iwo Jima 75th Anniversary Parade

The Battle of Iwo Jima was a major battle in the Pacific in which U.S. Marines and Navy Corpsmen landed on the island of Iwo Jima and eventually captured it from the Imperial Japanese Army. The battle lasted from February 19, 1945 to March 26, 1945. There were 28,851 U.S. casualties, including 6,825 killed. United States Navy Veteran, Seaman 1st Class Walter Earl Flemming, an Iwo Jima survivor took part in the wreath laying ceremony this year.

There was a second wreath laying ceremony behind the Iwo Jima Monument at Cpl Harlon Block’s (USMC) gravesite. Cpl Block was a Marine from Weslaco Texas who participated in the Iwo Jima flag raising

and was later killed in action.Hershel E. Williams (USMC), soon to be 95, has attended the MMA Iwo Jima ceremony for the past 6 years, was unable to attend this year, but was sure to send a letter to Col Dowling before the event. In the letter, Williams wrote that he was sadly unable to at-tend this year because his daughter and son-in-law had medical problems, mind you, Williams is in good health. Then Dowling read from the letter: “I watched from the bottom of Mount Suribachi when both flags were raised. The first one was small, carried by a young Marine.

They sent for one from a Navy support ship that was huge. When the giant flag fluttered into the air and could be seen by

all, the island erupted with thunderous applause. I am grateful that the Marine Military Academy celebrates this day of victory and remembrance,” the letter ended.

MMA Receives The Rotary Citation With Gold Distinction

MMA’s Rotary Interact Club received the 2019-2020 Rotary Citation with gold distinction which recognizes their support of the strategic priorities of Rotary International and conducting a well-balanced program of service and education throughout the year.

The MMA Interact Club participated in nine service projects, the RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) leadership program, the Rotary 4-Way Speech Contest, the Harlingen Save A Life program, and the Mayor’s State of the City Address.

The club’s service projects included providing an Honor Guard at the Down By The Border Annual Prom for Downs Syndrome people event, helped the Make A Wish organization with Send Offs and Returns at the airport, held two Texas Adopt a Highway Trash

Pick-ups, participated in two City of Harlingen Health Department Mosquito Abatement Projects at housing authority facilities, and assisted First United Methodist Church, on two afternoons, setting up their Annual Pumpkin Patch.

The club normally participates in many more community service projects but unfortunately, COVID-19 concerns curtailed their activities.

The club holds weekly lunch meetings on Tuesdays, often with guest presenters, like Harlingen Mayor Chris Boswell and Assistant Chief of Police, Miryam Anderson. Each of our over 30 members was able to attend at least one Friday Rotary Club meeting at the Harlingen Public Library during the academic year to see how our sponsoring club operates.

Graduation 2020 Dinner

Graduation 2020 Dinner »» 32

Seven senior cadets that remained at Marine Military Academy (MMA) during 4th quarter had a very special graduation dinner to celebrate the end of a chapter in their lives and the start of a new one. The event took place at Quarters One, the home of the President of MMA, Col Dowling and his wife Karen.

They welcomed the cadets into their home. Mrs. Dowling decorated their home to celebrate the senior cadets’ greatest achievements in a very beautiful way.

Cadets celebrated not only with the Dowling family and SgtMaj Bass, the Commandant of Cadets, and his family, but also with their families and other cadets via zoom.

The cadets talked about their future plans throughout the evening as they made toasts with apple cider. The night was a success with great responses from their friends, siblings, and parents back home.

It was a special moment when seniors that were not in attendance shared some words to express their happiness and joy with those still at MMA. Even though this is not the way it was expected to be, MMA did the best to celebrate our senior class of 2020.

This Spring began in a way that Marine Military Academy has never experienced before. It started with words like virus and pandemic and then it had a name, COVID-19. On February 3rd, the US declared a public health emergency. On February 25th the CDC announced that COVID-19 was heading towards pandemic status and forced MMA to make a decision that could affect the health and well being of over 200 cadets, faculty and staff. The President of the Academy needed to make the decision quickly.

The cadets were scheduled to leave on March 13th for the beginning of Spring Break because of an earlier decision to allow all cadets to go home understanding that there was a possibility that they would not be able to return at the end of the break. The other option was to remain on campus and finish the school year at a rapid pace to avoid any extra travel and to return home to their families sooner.

On March 13th President Trump declared COVID-19 a National Emergency and initiated a travel ban stating that Non-US citizens traveling back from European countries would not be allowed in the US. The same day MMA closed the campus to all outsiders, created “CAMP LEATHERNECK” for 36 cadets who choose to

remain om campus and complete their educational requirements. Our off-campus cadets began utilizing distance learning. While still on campus the remaining cadets supported the community by making face masks for the first responders that included hospital staff and law enforcement officers. A big highlight for the cadets was their support of the local restaurants and being able to enjoy the many different cuisines. Marine Military Academy had zero cases of COVID-19 throughout Camp Leatherneck!

Seven of our cadet seniors were able to finish their last year at Marine Military Academy on campus.

The Senior cadets that stayed at Marine Military Academy had a very special graduation dinner to celebrate the end of a chapter in their lives and the start of a new one. The event took place at Quarters One, the home of the President of MMA, Col. Dowling and his wife Karen. SgtMaj. Bass, the Commandant of Cadets, and his family were also present to celebrate the 2020 MMA Seniors. The cadets were welcomed into the home with graduation decorations abound. Cadets visited with their families and some of the cadets at their homes via Zoom. The actual video graduation ceremony was done ahead of time and

shared via social media and You Tube with the families on May 9th.In May, with guidance from the CDC and Cameron County officials, MMA decided to push forward with the planning for Summer Camp 2020 with very strict COVID-19 guidelines for campers and staff. MMA purchased Needlepoint Bipolar Ionization Systems that were installed onto the coils of our AC systems and placed sanitizing stations as well as temperature scanners throughout the campus. The water fountains were made inaccessible and the cadets used their personnel camelbacks or individual water bottles. MMA also purchased three face coverings for each camper, these were labeled with the camper’s name, worn for one day and properly laundered and exchanged for the next day.

On July 4th MMA kicked off day one of Summer Camp registration. This included very limited contact with the families, on-site COVID-19 testing immediately upon receiving the camper as well as temperature checks. Parents were directed to the Cadet Activities Center (CAC) to a drive thru medication drop off and directed to stay in their vehicle until contacted and given the campers test results. Once the campers COVID-19 test results were available, the parents were notified of the

35 «« 2020 Challenges Overcome

results and directed off campus. The camper would then head off to their company to begin their four-week adventure! The campers were tested in ways that most Summer Camps never even think of.

They not only kept up with the strict COVID-19 rules, on July 22nd they also went through Hurricane Hanna! For some of these campers it was the first time they had ever been through a hurricane, MMA on the other hand has been through many hurricanes since 1965. The damage to the MMA campus was minimal and the campers all did their parts by helping to clean up leaves and branches throughout the campus. Immediately after the hurricane, MMA hosted 26 contracted FEMA paramedics from all over the country who were sent to support the local hospitals during the COVID-19 peak. They were housed in the empty Charlie Company Barracks.

In the end Marine Military Academy took on a challenge that no one had prepared for, we made a plan, executed our plan, made changes as necessary and came out with another successful Spring and Summer and now we are looking forward to a successful 2020-21 Fall Semester at Marine Military Academy.
