Semperoper Dresden
Dresden and its majestic Old Town are home to a cultural heritage of international renown. Every year hundreds of thousands of visitors are captivated by the precious paintings, prestigious orchestras and musical ensembles as well as impressive buildings from different eras. One of the most famous venues is also located in this city on the Elbe: the Semperoper, an opera house with a global reputation, a distinguished ensemble and many international guests. This is also the home of the Staatskapelle Dresden, one of the oldest orchestras in the world and thus steeped in tradition. Founded in 1548 by Elector Moritz of Saxony as a court orchestra, its list of former conductors includes Heinrich Schütz, Carl Maria von Weber and Richard Wag-ner, who described the ensemble as his »mira-culous harp«. Operatic history has been written at the Semperoper: This is where Richard Wag-
ner gave the world premieres of »Rienzi«, »The Flying Dutchman« and »Tannhäuser«. There is also an indelible connection to Richard Strauss, nine of whose 15 operas were performed for the first time at the Semperoper, including »Salome«, »Der Rosenkavalier« and »Elektra«. In fact, Richard Strauss collaborated closely with the Staatskapelle for almost seventy years. In 2014, his 150th birthday was celebrated at the Semperoper with a special programme of events.
From the 2018 / 19 season, Peter Theiler will be Managing Director of the Saxon State Opera in Dresden. Together with his team and artistic directors, Peter Theiler understands music the-atre and ballet in all its facets as a living memory and vital expression of our contem-porary world. With celebrated conductors,
stage directors and singers of the highest calibre as well as international collaborations, the reputation of the Semperoper will continue to grow under his watch.
Christian Thielemann has been principal con-ductor of the Staatskapelle since the 2012/13 season. The State Opera Chorus is famous in Germany and elsewhere through its concerts and CD productions. Founded by Carl Maria von Weber in 1817, celebrations to mark its 200th anniversary were held in October 2017. Weber was also instrumental in creating a dedi-cated ballet company in Dresden. Founded in 1823, its first artistic heyday came in the 1920s, followed by many great choreographies after the Second World War under directors Tom Schilling, Harald Wandtke and Vladimir Dere-vianko.
About the Semperoper
Partner der Semperoper und der Staatskapelle Dresden
Aaron S. Watkin has been the director of Sem-peroper Ballett since 2006. Today the company is renowned for the strength and versatility of its dancers, who perform a wide repertoire of classical and contemporary dance styles.
At the Semperoper, tradition and modernity have gone hand in hand for centuries. Dest-royed during the bombing of Dresden on 13 February 1945, the opera house was officially reopened 40 years later, on 13 February 1985.

First performed in 1978, the anti-anti-opera »Le Grand Macabre« by the Hungarian composer György Ligeti is today regarded as one of the most effective works of musical theatre of the last decades. In a highly entertai-ning mix of medieval mystery play, absurd slapstick and black humour, Ligeti’s musically allusive composition tells the story of the imaginary country of Breughelland as it faces destruction, which in fact does not happen but is simply forgotten in a fit of collective drunkenness.

Richard Wagner’s musical comedy about »The Master-Singers of Nuremberg« is a great masterpiece about love and desire, of old men and young women, of stormy poets and nit-picking bachelors. And it is a romantic utopia about how the power of singing and art is able to recon-cile conflicting social forces in the idealised medieval city of Nuremberg. A co-production with the Salzburg Easter Festival under the baton of Christian Thielemann.

Giacomo Puccini considered his Tragedia giapponese, premiered in Milan in 1904, to be his most emotionally charged opera. Even today, the tragic love story of the young geisha Cio-Cio-san and the American naval officer touches our hearts while we are shaken by the realism with which cultural misunderstandings are shown. Together with star designer Kenzo Takada, Japanese director Amon Miyamoto presents an oriental view of this Japanese-American romance.

In »Black Milk«, Israeli choreographer Ohad Naharin, a student of Graham’s, propels his five dancers across the stage in an energetic, see-mingly archaic work, before the darkly myste-rious choreography »Songs for a Siren«, crea-ted by Joseph Hernandez for the Semperoper Ballett, completes the labyrinth.
Staatskapelle2019 / 20 Season
TheStaatskapelle DresdenCHRISTIAN THIELEMANN
Principal Conductor
MYUNG-WHUN CHUNG
Principal Guest Conductor
HERBERT BLOMSTEDT
Conductor Laureate
Founded by Moritz, Elector of Saxony, in 1548, the Staatskapelle Dresden is one of the oldest orchestras in the world and thus stee-ped in tradition.
Over its long history many distinguished conductors and internationally celebrated instrumentalists have left their mark on this one-time court orchestra. Previous directors include Heinrich Schütz, Johann Adolf Hasse, Carl Maria von Weber and Richard Wagner, who called the ensemble his »miraculous harp«. Prominent conductors of the last 100 years include Ernst von Schuch, Fritz Reiner, Fritz Busch, Karl Böhm, Joseph Keilberth, Rudolf Kempe, Otmar Suitner, Kurt Sander-ling, Herbert Blomstedt and Giuseppe Sino-poli. From 2002 the orchestra was led by Bernard Haitink (until 2004) followed by Fabio Luisi (2007-2010). Since the 2012/13 season, Christian Thielemann has been prin-cipal conductor of the Staatskapelle Dresden. In May 2016, Herbert Blomstedt, a former principal conductor of long standing, was appointed the orchestra’s conductor laureate. The only previous titleholder, from 1990 until his death in 2013, was Sir Colin Davis. Myung-Whun Chung has been principal guest conductor since the 2012/13 season.
Richard Strauss and the Staatskapelle were closely linked for more than sixty years. Nine of the composer’s operas were premie-red in Dresden, including »Salome«, »Elektra« and »Der Rosenkavalier«, while Strauss’s »Alpine Symphony« was dedicated to the orchestra. Countless other famous composers have written works either premiered by or dedicated to the orchestra. In 2007 the Staats-kapelle reaffirmed this tradition by introdu-cing the annual position of »Capell-Composi-teur«, subsequently held by composers such as Hans Werner Henze, Wolfgang Rihm, Sofia Gubaidulina, Arvo Pärt and Peter Eötvös.
The Staatskapelle’s home is the Sempero-per, where it performs around 260 operas and ballets each season. In addition, the ensemble presents another 50 symphonic and chamber concerts as well as a concert series held in Dresden’s Frauenkirche.
As one of the world’s most celebrated sym-phony orchestras, the Staatskapelle regularly travels abroad to the foremost classical venues. Since 2013 it has been the resident orchestra of the Salzburg Easter Festival, whose artistic director is Christian Thielemann.
The Staatskapelle also supports the local region: Since October 2008 it has been the patron orchestra of Meetingpoint Music Messiaen in the double city of Görlitz / Zgor-zelec. And in September 2010 the orchestra helped found the International Shostakovich Festival in Gohrisch (Saxon Switzerland), which is the only such annual event entirely dedicated to the music and life of Dmitri Shostakovich.
In Brussels in 2007 the Staatskapelle became the first – and so far only – orchestra to be awarded the »European Prize for the Pre-servation of the World’s Musical Heritage«.
Volkswagen is a partner of the Staatskapelle Dresden.
Staatskapelle2019 / 20 Season
Christian ThielemannPrincipal Conductor of the Staatskapelle Dresden
The 2019 / 2020 season is Christian Thielemann’s eighth as principal conductor of the Staats-kapelle Dresden. Following engagements at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, in Gelsenkirchen, Karlsruhe, Hanover and Dusseldorf, he became Generalmusikdirektor in Nuremberg in 1988. In 1997 he returned to his hometown of Berlin to direct the Deutsche Oper until 2004, when he became music director of the Munich Philharmonic, a post he occupied until 2011. In addition to his current position in Dresden, Thielemann has been artistic director of the Salzburg Easter Festival (where the Staatskapelle is resident orches-tra) since 2013.
In recent seasons Christian Thielemann has contributed greatly to the birthday cele-brations for Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss. But he has also conducted the works of diverse composers ranging from Bach to Henze, Rihm and Gubaidulina, in Dresden and on tour. In the Semperoper he has con-ducted new productions of »Manon Lescaut«, »Simon Boccanegra«, »Elektra« and »Der Freischütz« as well as two complete cycles of Wagner’s »Ring des Nibelungen« in early 2018. At the Salzburg Easter Festival he has conducted »Parsifal«, »Arabella«, the operatic double-bill »Cavalleria rusticana / Pagliacci« as well as »Otello«, »Die Walküre« and »Tosca«.
Christian Thielemann maintains close ties to the Berlin Philharmonic as well as the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, whose New Year’s Concert he conducted in 2019. Fol-lowing his debut at the Bayreuth Festival in 2000, he has returned every year to thrill audiences with benchmark interpretations, first as musical advisor for five years and, since 2015, as the festival’s music director. In
addition, he has been invited to conduct the great orchestras of Amsterdam, London, New York, Chicago and Philadelphia, and has per-formed in Israel, Japan and China.
As a UNITEL exclusive artist, Christian Thielemann has a large catalogue of recor-dings. His most recent projects with the Staatskapelle include Anton Bruckner’s Sym-phonies Nos. 1 and 3-9, the symphonies and solo concertos of Johannes Brahms as well as the operas »Der Freischütz«, »Cavalleria rusticana / Pagliacci«, »Elektra«, »Die Wal-küre« and »Lohengrin«, on CD or DVD. In addition to symphonic works by Beethoven, Liszt, Bruckner, Reger, Pfitzner and Busoni, he has recorded various New Year’s Eve con-certs for DVD release with the Staatskapelle Dresden. Together with the Vienna Philhar-monic, he has recorded a complete set of Beethoven’s symphonies.
Christian Thielemann is an honorary mem-ber of London’s Royal Academy of Music and holds honorary doctorates from the Franz Liszt College of Music in Weimar and the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium. In May 2015 he was awarded the Richard Wagner Prize of the Richard Wagner Society of Leipzig, and in October 2016 received the Prize of the Sem-peroper Foundation. Christian Thielemann is the patron of the Richard-Wagner-Stätten in Graupa as well as the 49th International Youth Music Competition »jugend creativ« of the Volksbank and Raiffeisenbank.

The Transparent Factory is not only a production facility for the Volkswagen brand located in the very heart of Dresden: Thanks to its impressive architecture and its daily showcasing of electro-mobility, it has become a popular tourist attraction and venue for diverse events. Alongside guided tours, visitors have the opportunity to experience electro-mobility for themselves by test-driving the latest Volkswagen E-models.
When Volkswagen chose Dresden as the home for its Transparent Factory, this was not only a commitment to the region, but also in many ways a cultural endow-ment for the city and its people. From the outset, sponsorship of the arts was core to the philosophy of the Transparent Factory. In the meantime, the Transparent Factory has become a cornerstone of the city’s busy arts scene and a reliable part-ner for brilliant cultural projects, as confirmed by the long-term partnership with the Semperoper Dresden and Staatskapelle Dresden.
With its translucent architecture, this is a unique venue, providing an extra-ordinary atmosphere for concerts and theatre performances, ballet productions as well as exhibitions. We would be delighted to help plan and execute your events in the Transparent Factory.
