What a fiscal year this 2019-2020 has turned out to be. As we looked forward to celebrating the Children’s Home Society of Idaho’s 112 years, little did we know we would be racing frantically trying to survive a global pandemic that spread like wildfire - becoming the biggest threat in recent memory to health and wellbeing, social welfare, and the economy. As if that was not enough, the country was once again engulfed by another crisis that spread across the globe even faster than the pandemic – the systemic racism and social injustices.

While everything seemed to turn upside down, at the Children’s Home Society, we continued to focus on ways to respond and meet children’s mental health needs by keeping services available. When the state passed the stay-at-home order, we immediately moved to operating remotely and implemented a telehealth system. All our clinicians re-ceived training and became certified to provide telehealth services. They continued to work hard to reach out to clients by applying blended approaches with face-to-face and virtual services.

As you may imagine, all these abrupt changes due to the impact of COVID-19 along with unprecedented social challenge have had severe consequences on children’s mental health. The separation from school, family, caregivers and friends has increased significantly the potential to create stress and anxiety for children. While not all children respond in the same ways, children who are already experiencing mental health issues have had more severe, longer-lasting impacts prompting an increase in the number of families seeking out mental health services.

The Children’s Home Society of Idaho has maintained its resolve during the crisis and we are even more determined to be there for our community. By moving to virtual services, we have made a commitment to reach children in ways we never thought possible before. This is especially true for children feeling alone, isolated from friends during times of crisis, who lack access to mental health services because they live in rural areas or lack the transportation to get to our facilities. The opportunity to include virtual services via Telehealth offer wonderful possibilities in the future for mental health, especially for rural communities with limited access.

We are eternally grateful for our many supporters, foundations, individual donors, corporations and well-wishers who without hesitation came to our rescue in time of tremendous uncertainties. A deep gratitude goes out to our Board of Directors who worked tirelessly and helped us weather the storm. Also a debt of gratitude to the staff and our clinicians whose commitment and determination contributed to helping over 2,800 children and their family members who desperately needed our services.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, and all of us here at Children’s Home Society and our Warm Springs Counseling Centers, thank you!

Last Years’ Initiativescontinue to thriveTARGETED CARE COORDINATION PROGRAMThis program launched September of 2019 and offers treatment and coordination of services for children and families who qualify. This is a family centered, strength-based method of working with families to meet their specific needs. It is a team-based approach that brings youth, families, and informal supports togeth-er to create the best possible care plan and prioritizes the families and youth voice and choice for services. INTERNSHIP PROGRAMWe have been collaborating with area and distance learning Universities to provide training and supervision for Master’s level Counseling and Social Work students. We have a team of supervisors that represent the counseling and social work field, and provide expertise in a variety of theory based approaches to mental health. NEW ELECTRONIC HEALTH RECORDS PLATFORM Beginning of 2020 we switched over to a new EHR system that allows for better client communication and scheduling, more efficient work flow and a more comprehensive data retrieval analysis.

2020 - 2021PROGRAMS AND INITIATIVESCHS HAS GONE VIRTUAL! Due to COVID-19 hitting our community hard, we were forced to quickly change gears on how we did things. Mental health cannot be put on hold, so we were faced with making sure we could still see our clients and not miss a beat. Our clinicians jumped into gear and all became Telehealth certified, giving them the ability to offer counseling online. They are now able to check in with their clients and make sure they are still getting the proper care they deserve. COVID-19 also came at a time when children and teens feel isolated and depressed, so by going virtual, we are able to take on new clients who COVID-19 is deeply affecting.

RURAL VIRTUAL EXPANSIONNow with a full staff of clinicians available to offer services online we are working to offer our programs, groups and services throughout all of Idaho, and hit rural areas that are lacking services in their community that we provide.

VIRTUAL WSTI Warm Springs Training Institute (WSTI) is now available online! We kicked off our first online training in August, 2020. Bringing WSTI online allows us to provide our continuing education training throughout all of Idaho. WSTI offers a series of professional development seminars. A unique emphasis of this continuing education program is its collaboration with Idaho universities, school districts, state agencies, family physicians, pediatricians, and other non-profit organizations that serve children and families.

CONNECTION PROGRAM Our Connection Program is developed to connect teens/kids with peers and parents. I AM A GIRL group is the first of many in this program that we will be rolling out this year. This is a virtual group for girls ages 13-16 and is designed to help them maintain a true connection with their peers in the community, strengthen self-esteem, abandon self-doubt, and give opportunities for genuine self-expression through verbal sharing and creative activity.

NEW COMMUNITY BASED SCHOOL COUNSELINGAs we continue our relationship with Whitney Elementary School, we are looking to expand to other schools. We are excited about our new collaboration with Morley Nelson Elementary School, where our Warm Springs Counseling Center will have a full-time clinician.

FAMILY FIRST: INTENSIVE IN-HOME THERAPY PROGRAMThis Intensive In-Home Family Therapy Program focuses on families that are struggling to raise children who have had adverse childhood experiences, children who have recently come out of treatment and need to be integrated back into the family and community, and/or families who need help supporting their children in long-term recovery. A Certified Healthy Foundations Program.

We are fortunate to have so many supporters and partners that have been with us in good times and in bad. This year we were all hit hard with COVID-19, bringing fundraising events, including our Annual Gala, to a screeching halt.

To all those who stepped-up to support us, from sponsorships, in-kind donations and ticket holders (some may not be included in our list, however still made commitments to our 24th Annual Gala), we want to thank you. We appreciate the time, investments and promises for donations and want you to know your intentions are honored here at the Children’s Home Society of Idaho. Thank you for your continued support and we hope to see you for a great time at our Gala in 2021.

A very special thank you to the Ada County Highway Commissioners and the ACHD Charity Golf Tournament Committee for putting on an amazing golf tournament (back in September of 2019) in which the Children’s Home Society was the sole beneficiary. The amount of time and effort that went into this tournament was enormous, and did not go unnoticed.

a special thank you!

See you in 2021!date tbd

In October of 2019, Gary and Janet Benoit approached the Children’s Home Society about putting on a weekend estate sale where all proceeds would benefit the Children’s Home. After they sorted and compiled over 20 years of Gary’s meaningful collectibles, the sale was a huge success and not only raised money to help children in this community, but also gave us an opportunity to get our story out, and for that we will always be grateful to the Benoit family.
