MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR
2
Dear Members of the HEC Montréal Community,
When I look through the 2019-2020 Activity Report for Research and Knowledge Transfer at HEC Montréal, I immediately think of two words: impact and relevance.
Our impactOur professors’ high-level scientific publications and prestigious research awards are clearly a testament to their influence and impact both here and abroad. Ten of our most accomplished professors have been cited over 10,000 times throughout their careers by the scientific community. This is in addition to the 22 HEC Montréal professors who are now members of the Royal Society of Canada (including two new appointments this year). Keep in mind that University of Texas at Dallas ranks HEC Montréal the 3rd top French-language management school in the world for its contribution to research. There is no question that, now more than ever, HEC Montréal is a leader in the field of management research.
Our relevanceOur relevance is what gives our scientific impact meaning. In spite of the health crisis that has affected all our lives and brought on an economic slump, in 2019-2020, we entered into new organizational research and transfer partnerships. HEC Montréal works closely with the business world and different practice settings to bring concrete solutions to societal issues. A lovely example of this in 2020 was our professors’ eagerness to invest massive amounts of energy into projects to help governments manage the health crisis and prepare for economic recovery. Dozens of important projects were quickly put into place. In all sincerity, I have never been prouder than I am now to work at HEC Montréal.
It is, therefore, with immense gratitude toward the School’s faculty and their research teams that I present our 2019-2020 Activity Report. Behind each accomplishment mentioned in this report are talented, committed people to whom I would like to extend my sincere thanks.

The plan for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion: Keys to Excellence in Research has been enhanced further to a far-ranging consultation with HEC Montréal’s administration and several faculty members.
The policy and action plan are available on HEC Montréal’s EDI webpage.
Research activities on matters pertaining to EDI in management
HEC Montréal’s commitment to EDI is evidenced by the research projects conducted by its faculty and student body. Here are a few examples:
EQUITY, DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION (EDI) IN RESEARCH
Assistant professors Laurence Daoust and Oriane Couchoux are working on a research project on the challenges auditors face when auditing Indigenous communities.
Hub professors have developed projects that leverage entrepreneurship as a means of integrating cultural communities as well as projects pertaining to women in business and entrepreneurship.
Full professor Claude Francoeur and honorary professor Réal Labelle have published several studies measuring the effects of increasing diversity within boards of directors, for example, by appointing more women to them. These two professors are among the most cited researchers in the field of governance, particularly in the area of diversity on boards of directors.
HEC Montréal has adopted a policy on EDI that applies to all spheres of activity on campus. The guiding principles of this policy orient our commitments and actions.

COVID-19 PANDEMIC:OUR RESEARCHERS MOBILIZED
22
Faced with the COVID-19 pandemic, HEC Montréal has reached new heights in demonstrating leadership in management research. Some 50 research projects involving around 20 partners on topics relating to the pandemic are underway that can be concretely applied to a range of fields, such as economics, business, logistics, healthcare system management, the technology shift, work organization and medical research.
Here are a few examples:
How does media coverage of COVID-19 influence purchasing behaviour?A research team (composed of Yany Grégoire, Bruno Lussier, Marie-Louise Radanielina-Hita, Sylvain Sénécal and Christian Vandenberghe) from the marketing and management departments is working on identifying the effects of media coverage of COVID-19 on the fear and purchasing behaviour of Quebecers.
Maintaining work-family balance during a lockdownAs part of a research project between HEC Montréal, the Institut de recherche d’Hydro-Québec and Yapouni, Marine Agogué’s team investigated the work-family balance strategies implemented within a company to determine what effects they had on employee performance and quality of life.
Designing web messages related to COVID-19 that reassure consumers about making in-store visitsThe team members of the NSERC-Prompt Industrial Research Chair in User Experience (composed of Constantinos K. Coursaris, Gabriel Chabot, Pierre-Majorique Léger and Sylvain Sénécal) conducted a study that examines the influence that webpage and content designs for social support messages relating to COVID-19 have on consumer intentions to make in-store purchases.
Providing reliable and unified data to the scientific communityDecision Sciences Professor David Ardia worked with Emanuele Guidotti from the Université de Neuchâtel to create the COVID-19 Data Hub platform to provide reliable, consistent data to the scientific community.
Ensuring greater availability of personal protective equipment (PPE) against the virusThe aim of this project conducted by a team (composed of Valérie Bélanger, Martin Cousineau, Sylvain Landry, Claudia Rebolledo, Jacques Roy and Martin Beaulieu) from the Department of Logistics and Operations Management is to improve the supply chain resilience of PPE equipment, which is so essential to the functioning of healthcare facilities.
Guiding economic policies in times of crisisNicolas Vincent is part of a team of researchers studying the impact of the pandemic and the resulting economic measures on Canadian household finances.
Preventing the spread of COVID-19 by reducing hospital visitsAs part of a research partnership, HEC Montréal Professor and Research Chair in Digital Health Guy Paré is working with the CHUM and Aetonix to develop a mobile app that will provide support to patients before and after outpatient surgery.
Understanding the effects of the crisis on household finances and behaviour patterns in QuebecA group of researchers led by Pierre-Carl Michaud is studying the impact of the closure of a large part of the economy from March 2020 onwards on household finances and resulting behaviour patterns in Quebec.

INVENTION DISCLOSURES48 invention disclosures since 2002, including 3 new disclosures in 2019-2020.Example of an invention disclosure:
The invention involves an experimental paradigm for financial image to measure psychophysiological propensity for risk. The experimental paradigm is based on the creation of images of financial risk that are calibrated to elicit negative or positive reactions. Emotional reactions to the images vary depending on a person’s propensity for risk. The researchers suggest that this prediction method is three times more accurate than traditional psychometric questionnaires.Team of 3 co-inventors from HEC Montréal:Pierre-Majorique Léger Professor, Department of Information TechnologiesMartin Boyer Professor, Department of FinanceMickael Glanger Scholarship student, MSc
TECHNOLOGY TRANSFEROf the 48 invention disclosures, 23 technologies have been transferred to the industry (or are being evaluated), 19 of which are still active.Example of transferred technology:
