2019-2020 ANNUAL REPORT OF GIVING
2
The past 12 months have been among the most turbulent in the history of our school, yet
Allendale Columbia has emerged strong academically, financially, and collegially. Your
monetary support and encouragement have bolstered the faculty, staff, and volunteer
leadership of AC. We heard from alumni and friends as well as current and former parents who
expressed their sincere desire to see Allendale Columbia School not only succeed but flourish.
Among our collective accomplishments this year, you have helped us to:
• Conclude our fiscal year in a positive financial position with no draw from our endowment for the first time in a decade.
• Raise $4 million in gifts and grants to AC’s Annual Fund, which provides valuable support for school operations, primarily in the areas of student scholarship and faculty/staff salaries. This is the most the school has ever raised in a one-year timeframe.
• Transition seamlessly to a remote learning environment for all AC students in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.
• Host a safe, physically-distanced, on-campus Commencement ceremony for 31 seniors and their families, giving them the opportunity to celebrate their accomplishments.
• Develop a new early childhood education program for students 18-months to 3 years-old called AC Little School.
• Create a new position on the Leadership Team for a Director of Equity & Community
Outreach.
We thank you for your generous contributions from July 1, 2019 - June 30, 2020. We are
working tirelessly over the summer to prepare for a strong, supportive 2020-2021 school year
for our students, whose social, emotional, and academic health remain our first priority.
This fall the AC Board of Trustees will begin a national search for our next Head of School. We
thank Mike Gee for his eight years of service to AC, and we wish him well in his new academic
adventure.
We look forward to renewing our friendships with you and to meeting those who we haven’t
connected with yet. It may be a little more challenging to engage in person this fall, but we
will do our best to reach out to you as valued members of the AC community.
Kind regards,
Shannon Baudo Karen HigmanInterim Head of School Director of Advancement & Alumni Relations
Dear Friends and Supporters of Allendale Columbia School,
At AC, learning extends beyond the classroom and into the real world.
What we’ve accomplished
TOGETHER2019-2020

Students share experiences in French
French II students read the short
stories they wrote to fourth graders
as part of the AC Center for Global
Engagement’s “Global Buddies”
program. This program enables
Upper School language students
and members of the Global
Engagement Club to share their
language skills and cultural learning
experiences with Lower School
students in a casual setting. Being an N-12 school, AC is able
to easily facilitate cross-divisional exchanges, such as this, to
create lasting and impactful relationships between all grades.
AC hosts students from Mexico
Last year, AC students traveled to The
Harkness Institute in Mexico as part
the Center for Global Engagement’s
commitment to providing diverse and
accessible travel opportunities to all
its students geared around service
learning, cultural immersion, and/
or entrepreneurship. This year, the
roles were reversed as AC hosted the
Mexican students here in Rochester
for a week-long cultural exchange. The visiting students attended
classes at AC, toured Rochester, and visited Niagara Falls.
TEDxAllendaleColumbiaSchool
For the eighth year in a row, Upper School students experienced
the real-world challenges of developing and producing a TEDx
event. As an entirely student-run initiative, students were
responsible for everything, including developing a theme,
recruiting speakers, planning, promotion, and day-of execution
of the event. The students hope to continue to use TEDx as a
forum for people to share their passions, ideas, and experiences.
This year’s 11 speakers included retired U.S. Army Colonel and
biodefense expert Mark Kortepeter, Adrian Hale, Kerry Dunn, and
numerous students and community members.
AC student-musician performs at
the Kennedy Center
AC freshman, Lilah Costanzo, was accepted as a member of
the Rochester Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (RPYO) for the
2019-2020 season. The orchestra, comprised of 80 students
from across Greater Rochester, provides advanced music
students with orchestral performance and mentorship
opportunities. In February, the RPYO traveled to our nation’s
capital to perform at the Kennedy Center for President’s Day.

Second graders build their own city, Birchville
As part of AC’s project-based learning in Lower School,
second graders learned about cities and what goes
into designing and building them. Throughout this unit,
students applied concepts of engineering and the arts
as they designed blueprints of their ideal city. They
then presented their proposal to a mock city planning
board, comprised of Head of School, Mr. Gee, Head of
Lower School Mrs. Feiss, Head of Middle School Mrs.
Duver, Director of the AC Invent Center Ms. Crosby, and
Director of Food Service Mrs. Reynolds.
After receiving feedback from the mock city planning
board, the students were ready to design their own 3D city. Public transportation was an issue the mock planning board raised, so the
second grade students began to research this topic and met with Manager of Special Projects for the City of Rochester, Erik Frisch to discuss
different transportation systems and city planning in Rochester.
Next, students wrote and sent emails to members of the AC community asking what is needed to make a community great. One response
they got was about a homeless shelter and how shelters are an integral part of a community. Once the students learned this, a deep and
meaningful class discussion took place, resulting in their decision to include a homeless shelter in Birchville. This conversation also moved
them to want to take immediate action to help those affected by homelessness in the Rochester community, so they decided to sell the
crock-pot applesauce they’d been making in their classroom each week. The sale generated $140 which the students then donated to RAIHN,
a non-profit that assists homeless families to achieve sustainable independence by supporting them with shelter, food, personalized case
management and a network of caring volunteers.
The students decided early on that they wanted art to be a part of Birchville, so they took a field trip around Rochester viewing a variety
of sculptures to help determine what they wanted in their own city. Then, Art Teacher Mrs. Ellmaker helped them design a collaborative
sculpture (called “Colorful Life”) which is located in the center of Birchville.
The formal “ribbon-cutting” of Birchville was held on Monday, December 9th.
AC ranks in Top Best STEM High Schools in America
Allendale Columbia School ranks as one of Newsweek’s Top 5,000 STEM High Schools in America! In partnership with STEM.org, Newsweek analyzed more than 30,000 high schools in the country over a three-year period to determine the rankings.
NASA thanks AC sixth graders for their research
Clayton Turner,
Director of the NASA
Langley Research
Center, returned to
campus to discuss the
important role our sixth
grade students play
in on-going scientific
studies and research.
Students served as
citizen scientists,
reporting more than
330 cloud observations.
This data is being used
by NASA researchers to
improve the interpretation of satellite readings, provide ground-
based data on contrails, and help better calculate the rate of heat
exchange in the atmosphere.
