“Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”(2 Timothy 2:15)

Paul’s divine instructions to the young preacher Timothy have never been more important. The last days are upon us and they are bringing with them damnable cults and heresies of all kinds. Already, some ministers and churches, long thought to be strong defenders and promoters of the faith, have departed from the faith, giving heed to

seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils. (1 Timothy 4:1)

God has called you to a special work. This calling does not qualify you nor does it immunize you against false doctrine. With your calling comes the same instructions Paul gave young Timothy. Your acceptance of these instructions and your dedication to fulfilling them in your own life is ofutmost importance. In the proper application of these instructions, you have God’s promise that you shall be qualified in His sight and that youshallbewellfortifiedforthesedangerouslastdays.

Do not sell your high calling short by settling for less than the best possible theological and ministerial training. Make your plans to enroll for full-time resident training with a well established full-time Bible Institute & Seminary as soon as possible.

Texas Baptist Institute and Seminary has been helping the God-called in their search for excellence in biblical knowledge and dedicated service since the fall of 1948. While standing unmovable in dedication to Bible truths, she continues to upgrade her curricula and instructional methods to meet the changingneedsoftheministry.Youwillfindnobetterequippedschooltohelp in your preparation for the great work into which God has called you.

This institution is founded upon the belief that God calls and that the God-called can and should be instructed in “the way of God more perfectly.” It operates on the basic premise that a dedicated pastor-teacher faculty can best supply the practical instruction needed to equip those whom God calls.

As President of Texas Baptist Institute and Seminary, I invite you to choose this tried and proven institution of higher learning to help you in preparing to bestfulfillyourhighcalling.Wepromiseyouarichexperienceoffellowshipin preparation for a lifetime of serving the Lord.

Texas Baptist Institute & Seminary (TBI) students are especially blessed by association with men of God with great practical, pastoral, ministry, and missionary experience on their faculty. These men of God bring an average of 30 years experience in the ministry and 25 years experience as seminary instructors. TBI students are able to tap this source of ministerial knowledge and wisdom for counsel on personal and ministerial problems and activities.

HISTORYTexas Baptist Institute & Seminary (TBI) opened as a full-time Institute and Seminary in September 1948, with nine months of work and has operated on that basis since that time. Hundreds of students have received Biblical training in its Bible programs. The worth of the school is reflected in the accomplishments of former students who have become leaders in missions, church growth, and Christian education.

Christian education demands the best of dedicated administrators and faculty. God has providentially supplied great leaders and capable instructors to carry the work forward from its beginning. Dr. R. E. Rodgers was the first President of the school and during his two years of dedicated leadership the school began its growth. Dr. A. J. Kirkland assumed the Presidency in 1950 and gave the next twenty-two years of his life to build and establish the school as the great institution of service to the Lord’s churches that she has become. Dr. Ray O. Brooks was chosen to take the reins of leadership following the death of Dr. Kirkland. God has continued to bless as more and more students realize their need to study the Bible.

Calvary Baptist Church founded and operates TBI primarily for training God-called ministers and other Christian workers of the churches of the American Baptist Association.

MISSION STATEMENTTBI equips saints to do the work of ministry through a Biblically-based higher education in harmony with Bible doctrines of the American Baptist Association to advance the Kingdom of God through

the local church ministry of fulfilling the Great Commission.

EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHYTBI develops students spiritually in harmony with the Word of God. All truth is rooted in the inerrant Scriptures. Students are taught and encouraged to grow spiritually in their devotional life in preparation for their ministry to others, engaging in practical, Biblical, and personal evangelism. Throughout the student’s education, regardless of degree, the faculty places an emphasis upon the fundamentals of the Christian faith as the source of the practice and motivation of ministry in the contemporary world.

GROWTH RATESince 2014 our enrollment has increased 120%.

A DECADE OF GRADUATESIn the last ten years, eighty-eight graduates have received at least one degree, with multiple receiving more than one degree over their years of study. Of the eighty-eight degreed and dedicated individuals:

• 38 are currently serving as pastors.

• 12 are serving as missionaries.

• 18 are serving as support staff.

• 19 are using their education in other areas.

Since 1948, TBI has awarded:

• 491 Bachelor Degrees

• 181 Master Degrees

• 41 Doctoral Degrees

RECOGNITIONTBI holds candidacy status with the Association for Biblical Higher Education, 5850 T. G. Lee Blvd., Suite 130, Orlando, FL 32822; 407.207.0808.

The school is a member of and associates with the American Baptist Association of Theological Schools and cooperates in various programs to encourage quality Christian education.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES

FINANCIAL SUPPORTA host of faithful churches and individual Christians who recognize the need for providing the best possible training for pastors, missionaries and Christian workers support the school in several ways:

• REGULAR OFFERINGS: Churches which include the school in their monthly budgets comprise the major support for operation.

• DESIGNATED OFFERINGS: For student aid, for the storeroom, for the library and for the student housing fund are appreciated and fully honored.

• MEMORIALS: Any person desiring to set up a memorial for a loved one is encouraged to do so as a scholarship, library gift, for permanent equipment, for a lectureship, or other needful projects.

• ENDOWMENTS: Such gifts by interested individuals will always be invited and appreciated.

• BEQUESTS: To remember the Texas Baptist Institute & Seminary in a last will and testament is known as a bequest. The Christian has an unusual opportunity to witness that Christ comes first in his life and also in his death. In this way, one may extend his Christian stewardship so that God’s work may prosper and be a blessing to the coming generation. Legal counsel as to the working and form of a bequest is advisable.

The following statement of doctrines is set forth in the Texas Baptist Institute & Seminary Foundation. It will be seen to reflect a conservative, evangelical, missionary, and fundamental stand upon the Baptist Faith, which it believes to be in keeping with the Word of God.

1. God is one triune God: The Father, The Son and Holy Spirit.

2. All things exist as objects of God’s creative power, and not by evolution.

3. Jesus is the Son of God and the Son of Man; He is the only Saviour of men; He was born of a virgin, He is the only Mediator between God and man.

4. The Holy Spirit is the Administrator of God’s work in the world. He convicts the world of righteousness, of sin and the judgment. He regenerates, indwells, seals, comforts and preserves every believer in Christ, and restrains Satan and the powers of evil.

5. The Holy Scriptures, which we call, “The Bible,” in their original expression, are the Words of God; they are verbally inspired and the author of them is God.

6. The human race is totally depraved, alienated from God by sin, and is hopelessly and everlastingly lost except as God Himself provides salvation.

7. Salvation is by grace through faith, the benefit of the blood redemption of Jesus Christ, through His vicarious suffering and atonement, His death, burial, resurrection and intercession.

8. Jesus Christ established His church during His personal ministry on the earth. He is its only Lord and Head. He gave to His church its authority, its law, its commission and its ordinances with the power to perpetuate them; and in perpetuating them, in keeping with the Scriptures, the church as an institution, has perpetuated itself and will perpetuate itself until Jesus comes to earth again.

9. The church of Jesus Christ is a local body of baptized believers, covenanted together in the faith and fellowship of the Word of God. It is a sovereign and independent body, subject only to the triune God and His law. In religious matters, there can be no higher authority in the world than that of a New Testament Church of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the act of a church is final in all religious matters.

10. Churches of the Lord Jesus Christ may and should work together in doing the will of God as it pertains to their work; but it must be a voluntary cooperation and free association on the basis of church equality, with each church retaining its sovereignty and independence under the triune God. No religious body, such as is commonly thought of as a denominational organization, can make laws or rules governing a sovereign church, and if churches themselves enter into agreement whereby their sovereignty or independence is abridged, they become unscriptural in so doing.

11. The ordinances of the church are Baptism and the Lord’s Supper. They are properties of the church and can be administered by the authority of the church only. A penitent believer in Christ is a proper subject for baptism, and baptism and church fellowship are scriptural qualifications for partaking of the Lord’s Supper. Baptism is by immersion in water and its design is to declare the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins. The elements of the Lord’s Supper are “the fruit of the vine” and unleavened bread. In the Lord’s Supper the church memorializes His death until He comes again.

12. The believer in Christ is made secure in Him. His security is assured because salvation is the gift of God, based upon the finished work of Christ, and is not dependent upon good works. Good works are the fruits of the believer’s salvation and are not the cause of it.

13. Jesus will return to the earth in the end of this age. He will return in person as He went away. When He comes, the dead in Christ shall be raised from the dead and the living righteous saints shall be translated. Christ will judge the world in righteousness, reign with His saints on the earth, judge the nations and reward His servants. At the end of His earthly reign will come the resurrection of the rest of the dead of all ages, the final judgment, and the wicked shall go into everlasting banishment and torment; while the righteous shall go into eternal life.

14. The freedom of speech, of conscience, and of religion are God-given rights which cannot be scripturally taken away from any individual.

CATALOG & CLASS SCHEDULEThis catalog is designed to provide basic information about the school. Anyone may obtain a catalog, class schedule or other information by contacting Texas Baptist Institute & Seminary (TBI), P.O. Box 570, Henderson, Texas 75653-0570.

CREDIT & EMPLOYMENT AGREEMENTArea businesses generally give special consideration to TBI students needing credit or employment. The school appreciates this and must have the full cooperation of the student body to maintain good community relationships. Therefore, all students are required to honor all commitments which they or their spouses may make to any business in the area as a customer, prospective employee, or as an employee. Specifically, they must agree not to accept any employment offer which they do not intend to fulfill, to clear all absences with the employer in advance, to give at least a two week notice, if at all possible, before leaving their jobs, and to honorably settle all credit accounts opened with local businesses.

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIESHenderson is a city of approximately 15,000 residents with a variety of small and light industrial plants and other business establishments. Within 35 miles are five other thriving cities of about equal or larger size than Henderson: Tyler, Longview, Kilgore, Carthage and Jacksonville. While employment cannot be guaranteed to students by the school, when God wants one trained here, He is well able to provide the opportunities and means to fulfill His will.

LOW COST HOUSINGTBI offers limited housing facilities for single and married couples, at well below prevailing rental rates. One may file an application for on-campus housing. Facilities are usually adequate for singled, but occasionally there is a waiting period for on-campus housing for married couples. The administration assists students in locating suitable rental housing off campus as necessary. Again, God is able to provide your needs and for those who seek, “ye shall find.”

LEARNING AND EDUCATIONAL RESOURCESThe TBI Library is cataloged by the Dewey Decimal System and the catalog is available for those using the resources. The Library provides the foundational resources for a college education in Bible, Languages & General Studies. In addition to the resources provided in the TBI Library, students of TBI are also provided access to additional learning resources in other libraries through formal agreements.

TBI requires students upon entering school to purchase LOGOS Bible Software (Bronze Level) which contains approximately 450 books. Student may choose to purchase a higher level package with greater volumes as well as purchase individual books as needed.

THE BAPTIST MONITORThe BAPTIST MONITOR is also owned and published by TBI. The MONITOR contains monthly news of the ABA work, as well as, devotional and theological articles by faculty and others. Contact the TBI office for subscription or change of address.

ALUMNI ASSOCIATIONThe Alumni make known the kind of training they received by becoming successful pastors, missionaries, music directors, teachers, and leaders in Christian education. They are organized to promote and assist their school in many ways. Their devotion to this cause expresses their sincere gratitude for the training they have received.

The Alumni Association includes all present and former students. It sponsors fund raising efforts and conducts an annual banquet to highlight its activities. All students, graduates and friends of the school are encouraged to participate in alumni activities.

STUDENT SENATEThe Student Senate serves as the voice of the students to the administration and faculty. The students elect representatives, one from each class, in addition to three students who are elected at-large by the faculty. This Student Senate carries out varied student projects during the year and serves as the official channel of student expression to the faculty. Other functions of the Student Senate include activities, such as fund raising for student projects and special services.

STUDENT STOREROOMSGrocery and clothing storerooms are stocked by the gifts of the churches and individuals who support TBI. The grocery storeroom and supplies are available for students as needed. This storeroom is available on the honor system, and students are not to take more provisions than they actually need from week to week. The clothing storeroom is available also and students are encouraged to use as much of the clothing and household items as they can.

SWEETGUM GROVE BAPTIST HISTORY MUSEUMThe Sweetgum Grove Baptist History Museum is located on the campus of TBI. It is a replica of an early Twentieth Century church house and contains a panorama of Baptist Church History, appropriate church furniture for the times, and displays many artifacts of early churches and preachers. It has a regular display of portraits and biographies of older ministers, which is changed from time to time.

The Museum is sponsored and maintained by the Missionary Baptist Association Texas History and Archives Committee. Tours are free to the public and are by appointment only. Call committee member Don Britton, 903-714-8162, to schedule your appointment.

ANTIQUITY ENCOUNTER MUSEUMThe artifacts contained in the Antiquity Encounter Museum represent many civilizations. The museum has been called a “world class museum.” It includes items from Dr. Melancon’s work, items purchased for the museum and occasional donations of Biblical items. Some of them are extremely rare and are not seen outside of major museums.

Now that the museum is located at TBI, it will be used as a resource for educational opportunities, as well as serving to educate the public in matters of the Bible and faith.

The Antiquity Encounter Museum at TBI is open for tours by appointment. Contact Dr. John Melancon at [email protected] or call 903-284-7732. You may also contact the TBI office to schedule an appointment at 903-657-6543.

EDUCATION FOCUSED ON SERVICECalvary Baptist Church of Henderson sponsors Texas Baptist Institute & Seminary (TBI) with additional churches providing for the work of the Seminary. Such a connection brings the church alongside the school in its ministry of ministry education, which provides for rich learning and worship relationships with persons in those local churches. Students and their families are expected to join a local congregation and to participate in the total church activities as part of their education at TBI. Although joining Calvary is encouraged, no specific church in the ABA fellowship is required when creating the church relationship.

The church relationship will be used as an extension of education at TBI by providing an opportunity to make immediate application of knowledge and skills developed in classes throughout each week. This activity is expected as part of Ministry Formation and is required of all students taking courses for credit.

CHAPEL LECTURES / MENTORING PROGRAMTuesday & Thursday, a period is set aside as a special time of worship in the chapel service. The worship services are conducted by the president, the faculty, visiting pastors, and occasionally by students. Spiritual growth and fellowship are encouraged and developed through these services along with a special time of mentoring for each student by a faculty member. Chapel is a continuing course in Bible doctrine, evangelism and ministerial practicalities. Student attendance is required.

Special lecture series are conducted several times during the school year. These include the A. J. Kirkland Memorial Lectures, the Ray O. Brooks Lectures, the Spring Bible Conferences, and Guest Instructor Lectures. Outstanding speakers are thus brought to the school to enrich the spiritual life of all concerned.

RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR CONDUCTTBI can set no less standard for conduct than that of Scripture: I Corinthians 10:31, Colossians 3:17, Matthew 5:48, and II Timothy 2:15 are expressions of the standard of conduct which all ought to continually strive towards. The aim of seeking God’s approval and the responsibility of protecting the Christian testimony of one’s self and of others must become a rule of student life. Some specifics are:

• Anyone conducting themself unworthily or unbecoming as a Christian, may be asked to withdraw from school.

• Profanity and possession or use of intoxicants or illegal drugs is absolutely prohibited.

• Students will not be permitted to vie one instructor against another in or out of class. The faculty members adhere to the principle of unity in the cardinal tenets of the faith with individual liberty in matters of interpretation. Students are urged to prove all things for themselves and to learn clearly what is taught by their instructors whether they choose to agree or disagree with their teachings.

Some classes require a permanent notebook to be prepared by the student.

All class work is due at the date indicated by the instructor and no assignment will be accepted which is more than two (2) weeks overdue unless special arrangements are made with the instructor. Past due assignments will be graded down four points if less than one week overdue, eight points if more than one week, and to zero if more than two weeks.

SATISFACTORY ACADEMIC PROGRESSStudents must make Satisfactory Academic Progress each term in order to continue in their education. The Registrar’s Office distributes progress reports at the six week period each term and a grade card at the end of all terms enrolled. Students failing at the time of the six-week progress report in any course(s) are counseled by the instructor to assist the student in bringing work up to passing. All students (including Veterans) ending a term with less than a GPA of 2.0 or who failed more than 75% of the courses taken that term are placed on warning. class. Nothing is designed to be punitive; rather, all are designed to guide the student in making plans regarding their attendance in classes at TBI.

ABSENCE POLICY AND PROCEDURES

• Students must submit an absence report to the Dean for each day absent from each class stating the reason for being absent.

• The Dean will grant excused absences only for sickness justified by a doctor’s note or family emergencies requiring medical treatment, but not for routine office visits which could be scheduled outside school hours.

• Pastors and associate pastors may be granted excused absences for required pastoral ministry which could not be scheduled after school hours, such as preaching funerals and hospital calls with church families in life threatening situations.

• Students planning ahead for addressing matters outside of school hours is a good idea. Missing class for student conveniences are not excusable.

• Schedule routine office visits with doctors and other professionals outside of your class schedule. Absences for such reasons are not excused unless there is an emergency or doctor’s note of your level of illness that prohibited your attendance.

• Students absent over 25% of the time from any course cannot receive credit for the course even if all absences were excused.

• Veterans may miss no more than 20% of classroom time according to the Texas Veterans Commission Veterans Education Program.

• Students who are absent on the date of a pre-scheduled test may submit an excuse slip to the instructor, and with their approval, may be allowed to make up the test, but will be graded one letter below their score if their absence is not excusable.

• An absence of more than five minutes in reporting to class makes one tardy for that class. An absence of more than twenty minutes from class is to be counted as an absence from that class. Students who sleep in class or are otherwise disengaged may be counted as absent.

• Three tardies in a class will count as one absence. It is the responsibility of the student who is tardy, to request the instructor to record him as tardy instead of absent from the class, but this is not to be done until after the class period.

WITHDRAWAL OR CHANGE OF COURSESStudents who desire to change or add any course in their class schedule after registration must do so no later than the end of the second week of the term. Approval must be obtained from the Dean after first obtaining the advice of the instructor(s) concerned.

Students who desire to withdraw from one or more classes, but not from school at any time after the second week of a term, must submit a request in writing to the Dean. THE STUDENT MUST NOT WITHDRAW FROM ANY CLASS WITHOUT APPROVAL. Withdrawal from a class prior to mid-term, if approved, will be graded “W.” Withdrawal from a class after mid-term is permitted only in extreme cases. Any student who carelessly neglects his work can expect to receive an “F”. “W” grades are not included in average grade calculations.

WITHDRAWAL FROM SCHOOLStudents desiring to withdraw from school must submit a written request to the Dean stating the reasons for the withdrawal. At times, the administration may be able to help the student find ways to stay in school. Failure to make a written request for withdrawal, except under extreme emergency conditions, constitutes a failure in every course.

TRANSCRIPT OF RECORDSStudents desiring a transcript of their records must contact the Academic Office. No transcript will be issued if a student has not met or made satisfactory financial arrangements for all obligations. A fee of $5.00 is charged for each transcript.

STATEMENT OF ACADEMIC FREEDOMAcademic freedom allows for a thorough investigation of truth in Theology, General Education and Ministry matters. Each faculty member is allowed freedom to research and discuss assigned subjects and not to introduce controversial matters unrelated to the classroom subject. Faculty are not allowed to present matters in the classroom that violate Biblical truths and must not violate the Statement of Doctrines found in the TBI catalog.
