JOSEPH BRANT MUSEUM is Burlington’s community museum. With the replica of the original homestead of Joseph Brant ‘Thayendanegea’ (1742-1807), serving as a beacon, the facility features three galleries, space for travelling exhibitions and a dedicated programming area for school groups and education programs. The LEED designated building presents Burlington’s history as well as providing interactive experiences for visitors of all ages.

IRELAND HOUSE was built between 1835-1837, and was the home of Joseph Ireland, one of Burlington’s earliest settlers. Emigrating from Bowes, Yorkshire, England in 1819, he petitioned for land at Oakridge Farm. Joseph and his descendants occupied Ireland House until 1985. In 1987, the City of Burlington purchased the property from the estate of Lucie Marie Ireland Bush and established the Museum.

SCHOOL PROGRAMS Museums of Burlington is pleased to offer educational programs for students at both Ireland House Museum and Joseph Brant Museum. Designed around the Ontario curriculum, these programs offer students different approaches to learning about the history of Burlington and Canada.

Programs are 2 hours in length and are adaptable to fit individual class needs. Any two programs can be booked together on the same day, to make a full day (4 hour) program.

FEES Teachers and parent volunteers are admitted free at a ratio of 1:8. There is no minimum booking number. HST is not applicable. Programs should be booked at least two weeks in advance to ensure your choice of date is available.

EDU-KITS Bring the history of the land that is now Burlington to life in your classroom, by allowing students to handle artifacts, explore photographs and investigate secondary sources. This education kit includes an artifact identification activity, which can be used as the basis for a Social Studies lesson. Artifacts in this kit relate to daily life for Indigenous peoples and early settlers in the 19th century. This kit is recommended for grades K-6.

Edu-kits are a great way to host a heritage-based experience in a setting of your choice. The cost is $10/week, for a minimum one-week period.

HOW TO BOOK Programs should be booked at least two weeks in advance to ensure your choice of date is available. Confirmation of bookings will be sent in advance of the program.

SCHOOL PROGRAMS OFFERED AT JOSEPH BRANT MUSEUM

EARLY BURLINGTON

Explore the early history of Burlington with us at Joseph Brant Museum. Students will go on a short walking tour to learn about the features of Wellington Square, and the people who lived here. We will learn about early immigration to the area, and participate in a critical thinking game. After learning about Burlington’s past, students will contemplate its future, and create their own city plans.

FORCES, STRUCTURE AND MOVEMENT

Join us at Joseph Brant Museum to explore forces, structures, and movement through the history of Burlington. We will use the railways to explore electromagnetic force, and students will try an experiment. Students will examine the Burlington Skyway Bridge as a local structure, and practice building strong, stable structures of their own. We will also look at movement and the shipping industry, and students will try a navigation activity.

INTERACTIONS AMONG EARLY SOCIETIES

Join us at Joseph Brant Museum to explore the interactions among early societies in Canada, namely Indigenous peoples, and European settlers. Students will examine the exchange that occurred after first contact, and participate in a simulation. Artifacts and documents will reveal their histories during analysis and discussion. Students will also learn about treaties, and the different ways that they were made.

MEASUREMENTS, PATTERNS, AND SYMMETRY

Come to Joseph Brant Museum to explore the mathematical concepts of measurement, patterns, and symmetry using our costume collection as an example. Students will learn about standard and non-standard measurements, and learn about the use of measurements in clothing manufacture. We will explore the use of patterns, and create our own t-shirt designs. Students will also find symmetry in some of our collection items, and complete symmetrical objects using a template.

CONFLICT AND CHALLENGES: THE WAR OF 1812

The War of 1812 had an enormous impact on the formation of Canada’s identity. Students will explore the causes of the war and participate in a mock political debate, examine the perspectives of involved parties through primary source analyses, and assess the outcomes of the war and their own opinions on the conflict through a reflection exercise.

CONFLICT AND CHALLENGES: THE REBELLIONS OF 1837

The Rebellions of 1837 changed the geographic and political landscape of early Canada. Students will learn about the causes of the rebellions in Upper Canada by examining primary source documents, step into the shoes of rebellion supporters in a simulated vote, and assess the outcomes of the rebellions and their own opinions by issuing their own versions of the Durham Report.

FAMILIES THEN, FAMILIES NOW

How have families changed? How have they stayed the same? Your class explores the concept of ‘family’ and their role in it, by comparing and contrasting their family to the Ireland family. Students learn about the specific roles on a farm, including chores children were expected to do, and help our staff complete some of these chores around the home.

ENERGY AROUND US

Thermal, hydro, light, and sound – all were forms of energy used by the Ireland family. Your class explores these different types of energy through hands-on experiments, and historic demonstrations.

GROWTH AND CHANGES IN PLANTS

How did the Ireland family’s garden grow? This program introduces students to seasonality and how dependent the Ireland family was on a good harvest. Your class starts by learning about the basic needs of plants. Students then explore the different ways in which people used plants for food, shelter, and medicine in the past and present. All participants will plant a seed and take it back to class, to study and observe how it grows over time.

SCHOOL PROGRAMS OFFERED AT IRELAND HOUSE MUSEUM

BURLINGTON AND THE FIRST WORLD WAR

World War I brought on a period of change in Canada and abroad. Join us at Ireland House Museum to learn about Burlington and the First World War. Students will take a close look at the role of Nursing Sisters at the Brant Military Hospital, and triage wounded soldiers. Students will learn about the impact of canning factories, such as those on the Burlington waterfront, in feeding an army, and put together rations for the troops. Students will also learn about the experience of two Ireland family members during the War, and make their own recruitment posters.

UPPER CANADA COMMUNITIES AND MIGRATION

Diverse and distinct, your class learns about three communities in both Burlington and Canada; Indigenous peoples, British settlers, and Black settlers. Students explore the migration of these communities from abroad, as well as at home, and compare and contrast their experiences.

VICTORIAN CHRISTMAS

Visit Ireland House Museum and experience the special heritage traditions of a Victorian Christmas. The seasonally decorated historic house provides an appropriate backdrop for your students, while they learn about how traditions have changed over the years. Special heritage crafts and hearth baking completes the visit. This seasonal program is available mid-November to December.
