    A New Initiative

Our congregation is second to none in the deep devotion our

September is the month in which we transition from the lazy days that end

summer - the last of hot weather, long days and short nights - to the start of

fall, my favorite season. As the seasons change, we move from the monoto-

ny of multiple versions of green to the introduction of a wider variety of

colors, including reds and oranges and browns.

September is also when we prepare for the new Jewish year. Just as the sea-

sons don't abruptly change, neither do we. As I write this I'm reflecting on

the book I read in anticipation of the High Holy Days two years ago. In This

Is Real and You Are Completely Unprepared, the author, Alan Lew, encourages

you to view the High Holy Days as a journey of transformation. The journey begins, usually in

midsummer at the height of summer heat and greenery, with Tisha B’Av, and continues through

Sukkot, usually in mid-October when the full glory of fall is on display.

During this journey, Lew describes the possibility of transformation, during which we contemplate

the invisible – things we cannot see, but yet feel. As the author says, "The purpose of ritual is to

render the invisible visible." Using the book as a transformational guidebook, you can navigate the

flow of High Holy Days rituals to contemplate what your life means to you. The contemplation

allows you to renew yourself - healing the wounds of the past year and taking steps to be more

    authentically yourself.

The High Holy Days are an opportunity to envelop yourself in ritual. For those who find meaning

and comfort in ritual, I encourage you to partake as fully as you can - from the first majestic

sounds of High Holy Days tunes at Selichot, through sober Yom Kippur to the cathartic joy of

Sukkot, as we celebrate the first fruits of the autumn harvest.

For those who are more interested in pursuing the invisible, looking inward, there are numerous

opportunities to do so, including the self contemplation of Rabbi Cytron’s classes on Who Comes

First?, the meditativeness of the Soulful Prayer at Adath (SPA) service on the second day of Rosh

Hashana, and many more. You can look to your High Holy Days booklet for details. There is even

more to discover on our website at www.adathjeshurun.org.

Shanah tovah umetukah – may you and your family have a happy, healthy and sweet

    new year.

Join us for an interactive evening, previewing excerpts from a new work by

playwright Jon Adam Ross (JAR). The play, inspired by Abraham’s story,

utilizes shared stories of the Twin Cities Jewish community as it explores who

we are, stories we tell and what we want to hold onto in the future.

8:30 PM Havdalah followed by excerpts from

The inHEIRitance Project: The Abraham Play, with Jon Adam Ross

Then join in an audience Conversation with JAR.

JAR performed in Relics at the Guthrie Theater in 2014. Based in New York City, he has performed his

one-man shows in over 90 cities. He is a founding company member of Storahtelling and the North-

    Who Comes First?

Rabbi Barry Cytron, Adath Senior Scholar

    Shabbat Mornings ● 9:15-10:15 AM September 5, 12 and 19

Who comes first? My own family, or others in

need? Where should I focus my gaze, my effort,

my money? On my kin and my own people, or

on the larger world about? Must I make a

    choice? And how?

    The tension between particularism and

universalism, between the needs and concerns of our people

and the needs and concerns of all humanity, is central to Jewish

life and thought. Biblical prophets, the ancient rabbis, and 21st

century Jewish thinkers—all grapple with this challenge.

The class will utilize All the World, edited by Rabbi Larry Hoff-

man. He brings together voices from all streams of modern Juda-

ism. We will explore this debate and the creative efforts at its

resolution, as we struggle to balance our commitments to the

Jewish people AND to the world in which we live.

We begin at 9:15 AM sharp.

The Senior Scholar position held by Rabbi Cytron is sponsored by an

    anonymous donor.

jam session, as we get ready for Gimel! Brush up on

your favorite holiday tunes, grab a light bite, and

design your own name tag. Our Gimel services

theme this year is “names” and we hope as many people as pos-

sible come to all Gimel services with a name tag. Can’t make

them on the holidays, so don’t miss out!

Be a Host, Be a Guest

Help make the holidays more welcoming. If you can offer space

    B’NAI MITZVAH YOUTH

Jacob is the son of Miriam and Michael Goodman. He is the brother of Lauren, Lizzy and Danny and grandson of David

Goodman (z”l), Ruthe Goodman (z”l) and Jerry Heiteen, Henry Winograd and Leah and Richard Ross. Jacob’s favorite subjects in school are Writing and Science. He enjoys playing baseball and basketball as well as liking to cook and hike. Jacob says the most important thing he has learned through his Bar Mitzvah training is “you will succeed in something if you work hard and put your mind to it.”

schedule of events for the coming year that we hope will appeal

to all ages and interests. The dates to save for the next few

vations. In the meantime if you have any questions, please call

Orchard Street, by Susan Jane Gilman. On November 12 we’ll

Levine Page. The Book Club meets regularly on the 2nd Thurs-

Save the Dates: April 2-5, 2016

The Women's League's IntraContinental Region Spring Con-

ference will take place in Minneapolis on April 2-5, 2016. This

year's theme is "Heard It through the Grapevine!"

    NOTES FROM THE PRESIDENT

The theme for Women’s League this year is a portion of a

prayer from Proverbs – “she plants a vineyard by her own la-

    bors” (Proverbs 31:7).

How do we relate this to our everyday lives? Certainly none

of us is actually going out to a vineyard, but we do see the

fruits of our labors on a daily basis. We see it in our children

and grandchildren; we feel it in the warmth we receive from

our volunteer activities; we use the strength we gain from our

daily lives to summon up our courage when faced with chal-

lenges; we take peace and comfort from our synagogue and

    the values of Jewish tradition.

I hope all of you hard-working, generous, creative and inde-

pendent women will find some extra time in your busy lives to

join the Adath Jeshurun Women’s League and help us reap the

    benefits of our labors.

On behalf of the Officers and Board members of the Adath

Women’s League, we wish everyone a New Year filled with

love, compassion, good friends, good health and most of all,

    peace.

    NEW MEMBERS

    Andrea and

    Robby Potashnick

    met in Chicago,

    were married at

    Adath, and will

    celebrate their

    five year anniver-

    sary in Septem-

ber. Robby is originally from St. Louis, MO

and Andrea grew up in Plymouth. Robby is

still adjusting to Minnesota winters, however

they love living here and think it's a great

place to raise a family. They feel they have

found a second home for their children,

Nathan and Ari, with the wonderful staff at

the Gan and feel lucky to have met so many

    kind and welcoming young families.

    Congregational “Common Read”

Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End

“A deeply affecting, compelling and encouraging book”

Being Mortal raises the important issues that our neighbors,

friends and family members are all talking about—or ought

to be. New York Times bestselling author Dr. Atul

Gawande’s recent book Being Mortal: Medicine and What

Matters in the End is about living to the last with autonomy,

dignity, and joy. In it he follows a hospice nurse on her

rounds, a geriatrician in his clinic, and reformers turning

nursing homes upside down. He finds people who show us

how to have the hard conversations and how to ensure we

never sacrifice what people really care about.

On Sunday morning, November 15, Adath will host a congregation-

wide book discussion of Being Mortal. An excellent intergenerational con-

versation starter for families, the conversation is for all the adults in our congre-

gation, no matter their age. Dr. Vic Sandler and Annette Sandler will facilitate our

    discussion.

Start reading this short, wise and deeply moving book now. Several copies are available

    in the synagogue library.

We’re going to Cuba! Informational Meeting September 8

Let's provide an encore to the Minnesota

Orchestra's recent successful trip to Cuba!

Rabbi Harold Kravitz and Cindy Reich are organizing

a trip to Cuba chaired by Carolyn Abramson, Sun-

day, February 28 through Monday, March 7, 2016.

We are working with ITC (Israel Travel Connection), which has enormous

experience with Cuba tours for Jewish groups (taking 15 groups this year).

This Cuba trip will allow us to experience the country—its people, history, and

culture—while also engaging the Jewish community there. It is an opportunity to

get to Cuba before its doors open further and it becomes more commercialized.

Traveling with a group from our synagogue is a great way to deepen friendships

with people from home and build connections to community while seeing

    interesting places and learning together.

There will be an informational meeting at Adath on Tuesday evening

September 8 at 7:30 PM. To RSVP please contact Darlene at

[email protected]. If you have questions about the trip feel free to be in touch

with our chair Carolyn Abramson at [email protected]. It will be a great trip.

We hope you will join us!

    Adath Hesed Partners with

    PRISM

    In addition to our long-time

    partnerships with STEP in St.

Louis Park and ICA in Min-

netonka, Adath is now a Faith

    Partner of PRISM (People

Responding in Social Ministry), a community-

funded social service agency that provides

families and individuals with food, housing

assistance, clothing and housewares and other

services in times of financial hardship.

PRISM, located at 730 Florida Avenue South

in Golden Valley, serves the communities of

    Golden Valley, Robbinsdale, Crystal, New

Hope and eastern Plymouth, as well as anyone

in need in the Jewish community. The PRISM

Marketplace Food Shelf allows individuals to

independently choose their own 5-7 day sup-

ply of fresh and packaged food and personal

hygiene items. PRISM also offers housing assis-

tance, a thrift shop, and a school supplies

giveaway. More than 600 families are served

    each month.

Jewish Family and Children’s Service of Min-

neapolis and PRISM have recently entered

into an operating partnership to extend the

capacities of both agencies to meet the needs

of individuals and families experiencing finan-

    cial hardship.

For eligibility information and to utilize PRISM

services, contact PRISM at 763.529.1350. For

portunities or donation opportunities, see the

As we prepare for the New Year, it is

important to take time to properly dis-

pose of outdated and unused prescrip-

tion and over the counter medication.

Abuse of prescription medication is a

    growing issue, especially among teens.

    Accidental poisonings from medicines

are on the rise. Medicines flushed down the drain or

disposed of in the trash can harm wildlife and pollute

    drinking water.

Hennepin County has free medication drop boxes

available. Meds in their original containers can be

dropped into the box. Meds no longer in their original

containers should be placed in a quart sized or smaller

plastic bag and then dropped into the box. Meds in

many forms, including aerosols, blister packs, capsules,

creams, gels, inhalers, liquids, patches, pills and

    powders are accepted.

The sites do not accept needles, sharps or syringes,

    thermometers, or other medical supplies.

The green drop boxes are located at the Southdale

Library in Edina, the Ridgedale district court, and the

Brookdale district court. Many pharmacies, as well as

Park Nicollet and Health Partners facilities, also offer

    safe disposal options.

The mission of Adath Jeshurun Congregation, a member of the Conservative Movement, is to be a progressive, egalitarian and sacred

community dedicated to Torah (learning and tradition), Avodah (prayer and spirituality) and Gemilut Hasadim (acts of loving kindness).

    We sent 11 kids packing.

    Thanks to you.

Donations made to the L’Chaim campaign help send

Adath kids on life-changing adventures and help older

    congregants in life-changing circumstances.

Scholarship dollars enrich Jewish identities through

pilgrimages to Israel and summer camps for preschool-

ers at the Gan to overnight camps for teens.

Isolated, older congregants can get rides to services

through our Ride Share program and meals and an

outstretched hand through Yad Sima Tova.

But your contributions are needed for all this good to

happen. This fall when L’Chaim calls, please answer.
