Shirley Folkins-Roberts Meagan NoinExecutive Director President, Board of Directors

Dear Friends,

As our community and world face one of the most deadly health crises in a century, we at the Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation (NNCCF) would like to thank you for helping us care for our youngest cancer warriors. It is with incredible gratitude for our northern Nevada community that we say how inspiring it has been to watch and be a recipient of the generosity in 2019. You, as our donors, community partners and volunteers, helped us build a stronger organization and this strength enables us to provide vital support, financial, emotional and beyond.

Over the years you have helped us diversify our funding base, which has proven critical during these challenging economic times. We now have five signature fundraising events and all five of those events in 2019 sold out. We also continue to be grateful to more than the 57 community partners who work tirelessly throughout the year to host additional events in benefit of NNCCF. During our five-month-long Know the Gold Campaign beginning in September, you helped us raise $437,000, which was in turn matched by the William N. Pennington Foundation. Our community’s incredible foundations have helped us secure our ability to serve families throughout this time.

As we begin our 20th year of service, we reflect upon the expansion of our assistance beyond the payment of medical expenses, household bills and travel costs in order to seek treatment. We have discovered through our journey that our families greatly benefit from connecting to other parents, siblings and kids in the fight, through our monthly family events. Our end-of-treatment celebrations are something that children and families look forward to during their darkest and most difficult days of treatment. Our office has become a place that families stop in to receive hugs and comfort during their cancer journey and beyond and we look forward to welcoming back those events and visits as soon as possible.

Thanks to your support we have been able to develop programs that enhance educational experiences during the school years and with our Inspire Scholarship program, into college, trade school and career programs. Thanks to advancements in treatment, 90 percent of children with the most common forms of cancer will survive a diagnosis, but they also move forward with many challenges. Our Inspire Scholarship program helps give them a boost into adulthood and our community. In order to generate vital funds for cutting edge treatment that will reduce lasting impacts on growing bodies, we hosted the Shave for the Brave St. Baldrick’s event and A Giant Event for Childhood Cancer.

As we celebrate 20 years together in support of local families in the fight, you have all been vital in providing Help, Hope and Courage. Thank you for all you have done in helping us become the organization we are today. We look forward to emerging from this defining time together as a community.

With Gratitude,

WE ARE STRONG IN 2020 Thanks to your Support in 2019

In 2019, Casey Stiteler became the first childhood cancer survivor, and former NNCCF kid, to serve on the Board of Directors. He joined our board of directors shortly after he and his parents dissolved their nonprofit named Casey’s Project and directed their passion, resources and proceeds to NNCCF. He developed the nonprofit during his battle with cancer in order to provide fellow children in the hospital with toys and games – long before electronics were widely-used and available.

I was very fortunate, and my family was very fortunate, to have the support of NNCCF and community to make ends meet and see beyond the fight that we were in. And now, 19 years later, I have the opportunity to serve on the board and continue this work that NNCCF has done. - Casey Stiteler

Beyond the Bills

A Way to Connect – Each month, we host a fun gathering that is safe and free for our children and their families. The events are an opportunity for families to take a breather from the demands of childhood cancer and just have fun. This could be anything from a movie

A Time to Celebrate – We celebrate the milestone of completing chemotherapy, radiation or any other treatment the child received, with a “No More Treatment” party and bell ringing. The child picks out a theme, and we transform the NNCCF office into anything from

NNCCF is the first place a family turns to after receiving the news of a cancer diagnosis. Our programs and services have grown over the last two decades, and include much more than financial support. A childhood cancer diagnosis is a family diagnosis and we strive to reduce the burden for the whole family.

What services can we provide beyond financial assistance?

The staff and directors are amazing people. They have so much love to give and support for both the child and the family. Today was the bell ringing for our nephew Tommy and each and everyone

From the smiling faces that would greet and hug me the second I stepped into the office, to the generous feel-good gifts, to the immense financial aid that helped to eliminate a huge stress to my family, I could never be so inspired to do such good. Through such hard times, I always had the best foundation to fall back on. - Caleb

A Boost for Educational and Career Dreams – Our Inspire Scholarship and E-SMART Programs ensure education is possible for children diagnosed with cancer. We help children with school when physical attendance isn’t always possible and when tutoring or supplemental support is needed. We encourage our young adults to apply for higher education, vocational or technical schools and move into adulthood with the skills and certifications needed to reach their career dreams.

A Cheerful Office Visit for Hugs and Comfort – Our team and office environment provides a warm welcome to our children and families. Our open-door policy allows families to stop in when they need a cheerful hug, surprise from our toy closet or a book from Kylee’s Corner bookshelf. We are grateful for the generosity of the community for keeping our shelves stocked with new toys, games, blankets, books, activity packs and more. Every child, including siblings, deserves a reward for their bravery through treatment.

Caleb received the 2019 Inspire Scholarship, and is majoring in BioHealth Sciences.

Brady was diagnosed with cancer in March of 2017, at just 3 years old. His life, and the lives of his family, were placed on hold. Now, three years later, they are celebrating being cancer-free.

For more than nine months, Brady and his family would only leave the house for hospital visits due to the risk and fear of a bacterial infection, and he could not play with his cousins or friends. New rules were implemented in their household such as no shoes inside, always wash your hands and absolutely no sharing food or drinks with Brady. “Needless to say, a whirlwind is not enough to describe the change of events in our lives,” said Nicole, Brady’s mother.

Meet Brady

Brady and his family continue to have an outpouring of love and support from the community. Brady and his family remain positive and lean on one another during the good and the bad days.

In May of 2020, Brady and his family rang the “No More Treatment” bell with his family, friends and NNCCF team, in a superhero themed social-distancing party and parade. He was excited to tell the world that he is 100 percent cancer-free.

The support that Brady himself received was nothing short of wonderful as the NNCCF goes out of their way for the family, but especially for the kids. - Nicole.

Brady was pulled out of school for a year and a half because of his diagnosis. He was able to keep up with his education during that time due to the NNCCF E-SMART Program, which helped cover the costs of a sterile learning environment. It was an immense milestone for Brady when he was able to return to school – which he truly loved.

Volunteers helped run our signature events, provided in-office clerical work and helped spread awareness by distributing gold ribbon pins, creating awareness wreaths and much more.

The William N. Pennington Foundation began supporting NNCCF in 2013 with a grant that provided the capital funds for the office space that we call home today. In 2016, they began a matching grant challenge for our Know the Gold Campaign and each year since, matched all donations dollar-for-dollar, up to the campaign goal.

The 2019-2020 Know the Gold Campaign was one for the record books with a goal of raising $400,000 during the 5-month-long community fundraising effort. Thanks to the matching grant from the William N. Pennington Foundation, our donors, community partners and the hard work of our campaign partners (Scheels, KOH 780 News Talk, KBUL 98.1, WILD 102.9 and 95.5 The Vibe), $437,000 was raised for local children battling cancer! The William N. Pennington Foundation was so impressed by the community-wide efforts and generosity, that they increased their gift to $450,000.
