Introduction

The Great Lab (TGL) Project Seed Fund is a program under CREST R&D TalentDevelopment and is only open to shortlisted teams under IMDC 2020 CREST track.

The program objectives as as follow:

• To attract, seed and nurture talent in relevant technology and research areas which are aligned to CREST Key Cluster areas.

• To provide an incentive for final year students to take-up industry-relevant design project.

• To introduce and develop the participant’s knowledge and skills in research, development and presentation of an industry-relevant project.

Program DetailsThe Great Lab (TGL) Project Seed Fund

• Application for the TGL Project Seed Fund for IMDC 2020 is ONLY open toparticipating teams that has applied to participate in Innovate Malaysia DesignCompetition 2020 and has been shortlisted under CREST Design Challenge track.

• Team members must consist of 1 to 3 undergraduate students (final and/or third year)per project and are currently studying in a public/private university in Malaysia.

• Subject to a formal application for the TGL Project Seed Fund by the team andsuccessfully completed an interview with CREST panel, a project funding of RM1500(for project materials only) will be awarded to the successful teams.

• The award of the project fund is with the agreement that the team is required toutilize the fund to complete a design project based on the approvedproposal/application to IMDC 2020 & CREST AND present their completed project toCREST judges during the Finale of IMDC 2020.

• The project must be conducted according to the timeline of IMDC 2020.

• The project scope must be deemed relevant to the given 4 challenges statementsunder IMDC 2020 CREST Design Challenge track. The 4 CREST challenge statementsconsist of the Smart Transportation, Predictive Manufacturing Quality, PrecisionFarming and Digital Healthcare categories.

• The agreement for this project funding is between CREST and the team only. Thus, theproject funding will be disbursed directly to the team’s Project Leader.

• Full terms and conditions of the project funding will be stated in the TGL Project SeedFund Agreement.

Criteria of Proposal

1. Applicants are required to submit the TGL Project Seed Fund Application Form ,detailed technical proposal via powerpoint slides and/or other supportingdocuments (i.e. video, etc) as listed in the application form.

2. Applicant must submit the application documents via CREST online platformhttps://cresttgl.innovasianspace.net/e/thegreatlabimdc2020 latest by 15th

November 2019.

3. Each applicant must appoint a minimum 1 Project Supervisor from universityØ You may appoint more than 1 university supervisor.

4. CREST reserves the right to reject any applications received after the deadline andany applications which are incomplete.

Criteria of Proposal

Proposed Project Timeline (refer to TGL Project Seed Fund application form)

1. As part of the application required details, all applicant must submit a proposedproject timeline.

2. Please utilise a Gantt Chart/suitable project management template to indicateyour proposed project planning. This project timeline will be used to determine the1st Check Point/Project Progress Update date.

Criteria of ProposalGuideline for Bill of Materials and Budget (refer to TGL Project Seed Fund applicationform)

1. As part of the application required details, all applicant must submit a detailedproposed project budget. The budget must include specific details and cost ofany components/software/items to be be used in the project materials anddemo. As an example, you would have to create a Bill of Materials for yourproject and list down cost for the items. i.e Arduino board, Resistor 1kOhm, serverrental cost, IBM Bluemix subscription fee. Sample is as below:

2. Applicant may include cost of materials for prototype demo and poster for theIMDC 2020 Finale in the proposed project budget.

3. The TGL Project Seed Fund does not cover any travelling, journal subscription,service, personal and other cost which is not considered direct project materials byCREST and therefore, should not be included in the proposed project budget.

4. Please upload a detailed explanation and design details via a Powerpoint slides tothe on-line platform in order to elaborate your project proposal.

Application Review & Approval

Application Review

1. Applicants will be required to attend an interview with CREST together with theuniversity supervisor. The interview process will consist of a presentation on theproposed project by the applicant.

2. All complete application will be review by CREST judges. Judging criteria will be thesame as follow:

• Design (How much does the project meet the design objectives?): 40%• Innovation (Is this a new way of doing things? How strong is the value

proposition?): 30%• Project Value (How much impact the community/ industry needs? How big is

the market?): 30%

3. CREST reserves the right to reject any application which is incomplete or are notrecommended by the panel of judges.

4. Announcement of the shortlisted applicants will be announced via e-mail.

1. Upon application approval, the team will be given a Letter of Award and 2 copiesof Project Funding Agreement from CREST.

2. The project supervisor will also be given a project supervisor appointment letterfrom CREST.

3. The team members will be required to signed the Project Funding Agreement toensure:• With the award of the project seed fund, the team are required to utilize the

fund to complete a design project based on the approvedproposal/application to IMDC 2020 & CREST AND present their completedproject to CREST judges during IMDC 2020 Finale.

• In the event that the team is unable to complete the project or attend theIMDC 2020 Finale, the team will be required to refund the full project fundamount back to CREST.

• Full terms & conditions will be outlined in the Project Fund Agreement.

3. Upon application approval, the team will be required to submit further supportingdocument together with 2 signed copies of the Project Funding Agreement.Supporting documents required are as below:

• Copy of Identity Card (IC)

• Project Leader’s copy of bank account statement/bank book (page wheredetails of the bank account are stated). This is for project fund disbursement.

• Letter of Support from the Project Supervisor/s (sample letter will be provided)

• Letter of Student Status Confirmation by the University/Faculty (sample letterwill be provided).

Disbursement of Fund

1. Once all required documents has been received by CREST, we will process and disburse the project fund into the Project Leader’s bank account.

2. Disbursement of fund are as follows:• Stage 1: 50% at upon CREST’s approval of the application AND receipt of

agreement documents• Stage 2: 50% after 1st check point via on-line platform. Teams will be required to

submit video of working prototype and ppt slides/photos/presentation review as proof of project progress. Project progress must be considered satisfactory to CREST.

3. Project Leader must compile and record all original receipts from Project Materials expenditure (RM1.5k) via a Spending Report and submit to CREST latest by the IMDC 2020 Finale. Any changes in Project Materials must be notified prior to the Finale via a Change Request Form.

4. Any unutilised project funding or expenditure not supported by original receipts must be refunded to CREST latest by 1 week after IMDC 2020 Finale.

Project Progress Evaluation

• During the agreed 1st Check point date, student are required to submit proof ofproject progress (video, Powerpoint, photos, etc) to CREST before the final 50%disbursement.

• The 1st check-point can be earlier than the agreed date provided that theapplicant has fulfil the required milestone.

• CREST reserves the right to delay further fund disbursement/request for full projectfunding refund to CREST, if found that the project progress is not according tosatisfactory standard according to the agreed milestone.
