THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
PRODUCT/SERVICE DEVELOPMENT AND
SUSTAINABILITY.
PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT simply means the
stages involved in bringing a product from concept
or idea stage through market release and beyond.
(Product Journey). This journey begins with the
identification of a market need, to
conceptualization and designing the product to
building a product road-map/ product life-cycle.
SUSTAINABILITY: This means the ability to
stand the test of time in good shape and in
performance.. We will give more attention on
sustainability because it is what keeps you in
business. When the product/service is developed
and introduced, it could be liken to a new-born
baby. It attracts the admiration of the majority
because it addresses the prevalent market needs.
There are factors that determine the sustainability
of products or services. The under listed are some
of them:
1. QUALITY: This includes the efficiency
and the effectiveness of the
product/service as it relates to the
market needs. The customer will always
give patronage to products or services
that have quality as against the ones that
are of lower quality.
2. TREND: The ability to keep abreast with
the trend will always help your
product/service to enjoy continued
patronage. Research has shown that
customers prefer trending products or
services. Also, the modern day
technology, fashion and people’s
preference have made it compulsory for
products/service to trend or not. For
example, in the music industry, the
world moved from record plates to
VHS/CD/DVD to MP3 etc. The big
speakers has been reduced to Compact.
In the fashion industry especially women
designs changes almost every six months.
For instance, the conventional hair-
plaiting is now tilting to wigs. Therefore,
a wise hair-dresser that wants to still be
in business will quickly learn and start
producing wigs. BE INNOVATIVE AND
CREATIVE LIKE THE SONS AND
DAUGHTERS OF ISSACHAR. (1ST
CHRONICLES 12:32).
3. GOVERNMENT
POLICIES/INFRASTRUCTURES: This
can favorably or adversely affect the
sustainability of a product or service. For
instance, during the time of Ebola
Outbreak in sub-Saharan Africa, the
usage of hand sanitizer was imposed on
every organization in the country
thereby boosting the business. However,
the decline in the usage of hand sanitizer
now is obvious because, the government
has soft-peddled in the enforcement.
Also, the lack of improvement of the
quality of our roads and social amenities
has removed some business in
circulation. (Apapa-Oshodi axis and Mile
2-Badagry Expressway are typical
examples).
4. ADVERTISEMENT: Advertisement,
sensitization and creation of awareness
of your product/service will help in
keeping your business in circulation and
relevance in the market. When the multi-
nationals advertise, they just want to
remind us of their existence and
relevance. For example, Coca-Cola
company had been in existence for
decades, yet they constantly remind the
general public of their brand. No
wonder, people refer to every soda drink
as Coke, every noodle is called Indomie
and every detergent is called Omo. The
power and influence of advertisement of
product/service cannot be over-
emphasized or neglected. Kindly avail
yourself of the opportunity that the
social media offers and advertise. It is
not a show-off neither is it kiddies
affairs. You must not wait to advertise
on bill boards, television, radio or
newspapers.
5. COMPETITION: This will determine
the life and duration of your
product/service in the product life cycle.
Always ensure that you are on the top of
your game. Ensure that you keep abreast
of your competitor’s strength and
weakness and appropriate them. You
will always have an edge over them.
YOU LEAD, WHILE OTHERS
FOLLOW! Your strength will manifest
in the after-sale service you render which
might include; home-delivery, pricing
and logistics etc.
6. PROMO: Giving back to your customers
will definitely increase patronage and
sustainability of your product life cycle.
Appreciating your customers gives them
a sense of worth and by extension keep
them hooked to your product/service.
7. PRODUCT
MODIFICATIONS/IMPROVEMENTS:
Products and services are to be modified
so as to remain relevant in the market.
For example, in the 80s and early 90s,
the quality of the detergents is nothing to
be compared with what we have now.
The packaging has been improved so
much that people no longer look for
foreign detergent like PERSIL to get
effective washings. Even, the local ones
are in competition with one another in
their packaging in order to remain in
business.
CONCLUSION: God delights in the prosperity of
His children (Psalm 35: 27c). Therefore, it will not
be out of place to present your business to God in
prayers. After all, “the horses are prepared for war
but the victory is of the Lord”. “The race is not for
the swift……. But time and chance happen to them
all”. It is God of providence who will bring these
time and chance. Having done all, STAND IN THE
PLACE OF PRAYER AND FAITH.
