2019 DONOR REPORT

Your support allows us to achieve our mission of providing resources to help maintain and expand 4-H programs in Massachusetts to grow the next generation of leaders and

innovators who are prepared to succeed in life and career. Thank you.

Dear Massachusetts 4-H Family and Friends:

I am honored to present to you the 2019 Donor Report of the Massachusetts 4-H Foundation. Thanks to the individuals, companies, and foundations named in the Report, the Foundation made great strides this past year in growing the unrestricted annual giving program while also increasing gifts to the permanent endowment.

The Foundation Board decided to emphasize annual giving in 2019 to generate more unrestricted dollars for current use in 4-H programs. The Annual Fund, net proceeds from the golf tournament and online auction, and grants that are not restricted to specified purposes comprise annual giving. The funds raised are used exclusively for 4-H programs. In 2019, annual giving grew to just over $162,000 from approximately $120,000 in 2018, a 35% increase.

The 2019 Annual Fund, with increased attention and participation from the Board, the catalytic $15,000 Challenge Match authored by five Foundation past presidents, and generous contributions by many loyal members of the 4-H family, accounted for approximately $88,200, a 70.5% increase over the 2018 Annual Fund. The year-end Challenge Match generated new and increased gifts to the Annual Fund totaling just over $17,000 from 100 members of the 4-H family.

Endowment giving exceeded the Trustees’ expectations in 2019. Over 60 different donors made gifts totaling almost $75,000 to seven funds. Included in those numbers are gifts from 44 donors who contributed to the Joe Major Sunny Rock 4-H Fund. That fund was established in 2018 to honor Joe Major, the founder of Sunny Rock 4-H Club, and his 40 years of service.

As I write this, Massachusetts citizens are firmly in the grasp of COVID-19. Due to the pandemic, face-to-face 4-H programming has ceased for the time being. Despite this, 4-H leaders and Educators remain actively engaged (from home) in developing creative ways to offer virtual programming and are planning for the day when we may safely emerge from our quarantine and reengage fully with 4-H clubs and activities.

At the Foundation, we are coordinating with UMass to respond to new and evolving funding needs and continuing our work to secure contributions from individuals, companies and foundations to support 4-H in 2020 and beyond.

With my deepest respect and gratitude,

Steven E. BorgesonPresident, Board of Trustees
