January 2019

Dear Coaches and Players,

Welcome to the 13th annual Mohegan Sun World Softball Coaches’ Convention held in the Mohegan Sun's

newest venue, the Expo Center! We are excited to have you here. Our mission is to provide you with the very

best in coaching education; and once again this year we have secured top clinicians and designed a curriculum

that addresses all levels of play and a range of coaching areas.

Here are a couple of convention notes for 2019:

- New this year, with our move to the more spacious Expo Center, we've created a new Demo Infield

in the back of the Exhibitor Zone, near the On Deck Sports Batting Cage. Make sure you attend one

of our interactive demos in this space during the convention.

- We have an event app that features the convention schedule, a list of exhibitors, a digital version of the event

handout and much more. Search Softball Coaches Convention in the app store. If you'd like to receive real-

time event updates and news, please allow us to push event notifications to your device of choice.

- Starting at 12:10pm, we are offering players and coaches the opportunity to meet and get autographs from

our attending softball stars - Lauren Chamberlain, Kelsey Stewart and Chelsea Goodacre - in the Exhibitor

Zone. See the event handout or app for details. Players have first priority for autographs.

- At 1:15pm, Softball Hall of Famer Sue Enquist is hosting a session - Big Fails, Big Moments & Big Lessons

- in Break-Out 1 featuring softball stars Lauren Chamberlain, Kelsey Stewart and Chelsea Goodacre. They’ll

share insights about the things that helped them improve - and you’ll get ideas for helping your players

improve, too.

- We encourage you to take advantage of time early in your day to visit exhibitors, as some exhibitors have

flights to catch later in the day and the Exhibitor Zone closes at 3:30pm. We have dedicated exhibitor time

from 7:45 - 8:15AM, from 10:30 - 11:15am, and again during lunch.

We believe our convention is more than just a day of player and coaching instruction; it is a chance to bounce

ideas off your fellow coaches and players and learn from each other. Our convention staff, exhibitors and guest

speakers will be available to you throughout the convention.

We thank all of our convention presenters for sharing their knowledge of and passion for the game. A special

thanks to our title sponsor, Mohegan Sun; and to our sponsors and exhibitors, whose support helps make this

convention possible.

Enjoy your time here; and if you have any thoughts on how to improve next year’s Mohegan Sun World

Softball Coaches’ Convention, please let us know. Wishing much success in your upcoming season!

Yours in softball and coaching,

TOPIC: How To Call A Game to Make Your Pitcher/Catcher Battery More Successful in Calling

Games

PRESENTER: Chelsea Goodacre, 2017 Rawlings Gold Glove Winner, Current NPF USSSA Pride

Catcher & All-American at the University of Arizona

Jen Hapanowicz, USA Elite Training Founder & Youth Softball Instructor

www.SoftballCoachesClinic.com

Understand The Factors

The Catcher

The best view of the game

Use the Catcher’s knowledge – instincts of reading the game

Pitcher

Know their strength

What is working that day??

Use the CHANGE – UP

Not every pitcher is the same

The Batter

Assess them- what are their strength and weakness

Umpire

What are they calling? We can’t change them!

The 3 Zones 1. What the batter wants to hit. 2. What the pitcher likes to throw. 3. What the umpire will call.

Prepare the Battery During Practice

Catcher

When do we start teaching them to call games?

Need to talk to battery about setting batters up

“Class Room Time” - teach the game to your player Pitchers

Practice Pressure situations

Prove how to call pitches – With the Stats!

Teach pitcher to break ball late. Can batters really see the ball all the way?

Pre Game Communication –“In the Bullpen”

Game like... Simulate an inning

Assess the warm –up and how to make adjustments Game Communication

Between Players & Coaches

Making the Adjustment for Game factors

The best pitch in Softball is a “Strike”

To be successful get a head of the count - The Stats prove it! Post-Game Analysis

How many first pitch strikes? Did we pitch from ahead or behind count

Discuss the controllable and uncontrollable game factors

How was the pitchers mental game?

Did the catcher communicate important game Intel to coach
