ROCK & ROLL: HOW IT CAME TO BELearn how rock ‘n’ roll evolved from pre-existing musical forms in the 1930s and 1940s to become the largest selling style of music in the U.S. and in much of the world. We will listen to and explore the early music of this art form and how it captured the imagination of teenagers of the 1950s and 1960s. JAZZ: HOW IT CAME TO BEJazz, one of America’s most loved musical styles, developed from several streams of African American music and has continued to evolve over the last 120 years. We will listen to both live and recorded examples that will serve to illuminate this fascinating history through the 1950s. INTRO TO DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHYClass will work together on learning what the equipment has to offer, understanding the basics of digital lighting and what makes an interesting composition in a photograph. BEER 101Discover the ins and outs of brewing including what malt is, where hops come from and the purpose of yeast. We will discuss the difference between a Lager and Ale, if Porters and Stouts are the same and the origin of India Pale Ale to give students a comprehensive knowledge of beer. We will also cover basic brewing techniques and ingredients and an introduction to beer styles and flavors and taste a handful of beers too! Children’s Book IllustrationsJanuary 17, 10:00AM – Noon at The Community HouseAs Alice said near the start of Alice in Wonderland, “What is a book without pictures or conversations?” We’ll explore contemporary award winners like Ezra Jack Keats, Jerry Pinkney, Maurice Sendak and Mo Willems. Then we will look back at 19th and 20th century artists like Randolph Caldecott, John Tenniel, E.H. Sheperd and Beatrix Potter. Our presenter is Wendy Evans, art historian, teacher, and docent at the DIA for 32 years.

We’ll look at books that will inspire children to actively care for our planet. These books are perfect to use for Earth Day, (April 22), and with the new school STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) curriculum.

CREDITS/REFUNDS: If you cannot attend a class, you may request a class credit 72 hours or more before the class (or first class in a series) is to be held. Class credits may be applied toward the cost of any future Community House (TCH) class within the next year from the date of issuance of the credit. If you contact TCH within 72 hours of the class start time or after the class has occurred, you are not entitled to a class credit of any kind.

If a class is rescheduled by TCH or the instructor, you are entitled to attend the rescheduled class. Alternatively, if you cannot attend the rescheduled class, you can receive a class credit to be used for any future classes. For classes within a series, you will receive a prorated class credit if you cannot attend the rescheduled class.

A refund will only be given if TCH cancels a class or TCH is given a note, within one week from the scheduled class, from a doctor or medical facility stating that the classtaker had a medical emergency. TCH reserves the right to change class locations, schedules, fees, and instructors when necessary.

Special events are non-transferable and non-refundable.

Audio and video recording during classes is prohibited, unless permitted by the instructor in writing.
