2019 FLORIDA STATE Men’s Tennis2

Entering his 20th season at the helm of the Florida State men’s tennis program, Hultquist has put himself atop the Florida State record books and the Seminoles consistently in the national spotlight. The winningest coach in program history (322-199), Hultquist has led the ‘Noles to 16 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, one of only 11 programs in the country to reach that mark of postseason longevity.

Under Hultquist’s leadership, Florida State men’s tennis has emerged as one of the top programs in the Atlantic Coast Conference and the country. In 19 seasons under Hultquist, FSU has had three ACC Player of the Year recipients, six All-American honors, the ITA Most Improved Player, two national ITA Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award winners and has finished the season ranked in the final ITA poll in all 19 of those season.

In 2018, Hultquist had his best season yet, leading Florida State to its best season in program history with a 28-5 record. 28 wins were the second most in program history but were good enough for the highest winning percentage in Seminoles men’s tennis history. His coaching performance in 2018 earned him ACC Coach of the Year Honors, becoming the first Florida State tennis coach to earn such honor.

2018 also saw the Seminoles defeat the Florida Gators for the second year in a row, both in front of the largest college tennis crowd of that season. Florida State also hosted the first and second round of the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time under Hultquist and the first time since 2009.

In 19 seasons at the helm at FSU, Hultquist has defeated 176 ranked opponents including 36 ranked in the top-25 and 18 ranked in the top-15. Amongst those ranked wins are two wins over the No. 1 ranked team in the country, a 4-3 win over No. 1 North Carolina in Tallahassee (2016) and a 4-3 win over No. 1 Wake Forest in Tallahassee (2018). Those two wins over No. 1 ranked teams in three years makes the Seminoles just one of two school to record such a feat.

Hultquist was in charge for five of the Seminoles nine 20-win season in the program’s 80 years of existence. He has also finished with 18 wins in 11 of his 19 seasons including each of the last seven.

Hultquist began his tennis career at Penn State where he was a four-year letterman and team captain in 1986. During that same year, he was an NCAA Tournament qualifier in doubles and earned all-conference honors in both singles and doubles. After graduating from Penn State, Hultquist turned pro, playing in the United States, Israel and Asia. During his career, Hultquist was selected to play on national teams that traveled to Korea and China for competition.

Hultquist is married to the former Angela White. The couple has four daughters, Devan (a Florida State beach volleyball player), Avery, Addison, and Mackenzie and one son, Blake.
