We fund life-changing diabetes research here in Alberta, and through our funding, we are moving closer to a cure! The Alberta Diabetes Foundation exists because we are not afraid to take risks. From innovative research breakthroughs such as the first successful islet cell transplant, to programming for children with diabetes, our funding positively impacts those struggling with diabetes.
Who we are
1.18 million Albertans have diabetes and this number is expected to grow by 50% in 2026. Diabetes can affect anyone, regardless of age, lifestyle, or the number on the scale. Facing diabetes is a challenge everyday; checking blood sugar levels, poking with needles, and feeling the constant anxiety that diabetes brings. Complications of diabetes include heart attacks, stroke, lower-limb amputation, and blindness—to name a few. Diabetes decreases a person’s lifespan by 5-15 years, stealing precious time and life away.

The Alberta Diabetes Foundation enables life-changing diabetes research every day by supporting cutting-edge studies and clinical trials across Alberta. We challenge traditional thinking and invest in world-renowned research teams, state-of-the-art equipment, and leading edge clinical practices. Our research and programs are improving the quality of life for people with diabetes through education, physical activity, nutrition, and management of complications. We are funding real results that truly make a difference.
Life-changing research
This October, the Alberta Diabetes Foundation will host its annual Halloween Howl to raise awareness and support for life-changing diabetes research. It is with the strong and continued support of the community that new therapies and treatments are being developed to improve the lives of individuals living with diabetes.
The Halloween Howl is a fun, family-friendly event that includes a 3km and 5km fun run/walk or a chip-timed 10km competitive run. Participants are encouraged to dress up, and prizes are awarded for the best costumes, best race times, and highest fundraisers.
Halloween Howl helps raise brand awareness for both the Alberta Diabetes Foundation and our valued partners. Our goal is to create a unique event, that is exciting and engaging for participants and their families, while also increasing diabetes awareness. Last year over 600 participants and sponsors helped Halloween Howl raise $100,000 and we believe with your support that this year’s impact can be even greater!
