Letter from the Reverend …

I wonder how many of you are like me…and when we find ourselves settled into a groove we are quite happy there, and don’t relish the thought of anything being different… As I write, we are moving into 2019 from 2018…and quite a lot, it seems, will be new … it will take a while to get used to writing that date for a start! Yesterday, I needed to go into a different supermarket, and of course we were not able to find things on the shelves, because they were all, quite naturally, in different places. But by far the biggest change for me recently has been having to drive a different car … well … three different ones in the space of four weeks. I did not at all like the automatic “spaceship” that I was loaned by the insurance/hire company after the unexpected demise of my own car. So when they finally told me that my own car was unfixable (and being a creature of habit), I set out to find something very akin to my “old” car. In car terms my car obviously had been “old”, and technology has moved on at an alarming rate. Although the one I have found is a “manual” car, it seems to have an ever-increasing number of things “electronic”, that perform completely unbidden as I “learn” to drive it … I say “learn” because it appears that although for forty years I have been driving (mainly manual) cars, after “manning” the automatic “spaceship” for just three weeks, I have completely forgotten how to drive a car with manual transmission! The perils of getting older! I seem to be OK when I am comfortable with things … but nowadays new things seem to be a lot harder to get used to. As I looked at my bible reading notes this morning, and checked out the passage that had been selected, I thought, “Good, I feel comfortable with the Old Testament”, and proceeded to read the passage from Genesis about Abram, and his new start. When Abram was told by God to go to the place that He would show him, with a promise, and that God would bless him and make his name great and his descendants many, Abram was not a young man. He was 75 years old when he was called

Page 4: 2019 - Microsoftbtckstorage.blob.core.windows.net/site2742... · insurance/hire company after the unexpected demise of my own car. So when they finally told me that my own car was

to something different … to a new way of life. He had to get out of the comfortable groove that he had made for himself, and settled into with his family, and he had to start learning all over again, But Abram listened to God, and went as he was called to this new place. So … now a new year … a year that I am sure will be full of both challenges and possibilities, which I would miss if I stubbornly chose the comfort of always trying to keep things the same, and staying exactly where I am. God continues to work in each of us, calling us to move forward so that we move on from the place that we are to somewhere or something new. This coming year there will be plenty of opportunities to try something a bit different … something that would encourage you to move forward in your faith. Maybe you have never been on an Alpha course, or never joined a home group. Maybe you will see a notice in this month’s magazine that will grab your attention. If you want to know more about something going on in the church, please do ask.

Well, this is my first article on behalf of Friends of Holy Trinity, and I’m

both inspired and greatly encouraged. This amazing group of friends

have supported the church in so many amazing ways, especially in

terms of financial support, and I simply want to express my heartfelt

gratitude and appreciation for all they do; it’s been wonderful to see

first-hand just some of the things they have done this year, and in

particular over the run up to Christmas.

Seeing the Church decorated with the different trees from the

community was inspiring; a wonderful splay of colour and talent, and I

know that pulling the event together takes a considerable degree of

planning, so well done, the trees looked amazing, and the Christmas

Tree Festival I’m sure helped kick-start Christmas celebrations for

many in our communities. At the same time, it was also a privilege as

the Rector to conduct the Service of Light and Dedication, where we

remembered Jesus Christ the light of the world coming to us, and also

remembered our loved ones, whose name we also remembered

through the lights on the Christmas tree by the Lych Gate. It was a

simple yet moving service, and the choir’s presence and support made

it even more memorable.

There are, of course, many events planned for 2019, which I look

forward to, but I do want to put out a request; I often see the same few

people doing all the work to make the many events happen, which we

all benefit from, and it’d be so good to see many more people offering

some of their time and talents to the Friends team. Please do seriously

consider how you might be able to support the Friends team and of

course the wider church, since it’d be so sad to see some of the events

cancelled due to a lack of help and support.

One of the first events that’ll be taking place in 2019 is a Games

Evening (Saturday 16th February, 7pm - 9:30pm), organised by Gordon

Simmonds, so please do keep an eye out for that; I’m sure, like the last

one that took place, it’ll be a great evening of fun, games, and

fellowship. (Tickets will be available from the Parish Office at £4 and

light refreshments will be available).

My thanks again to everyone who has helped make 2018 a special

year, and we look forward to 2019. Please don’t forget we have the

Friends of Holy Trinity AGM at 3pm on Sunday 24th March, when the

total raised during 2018 will be revealed.

Rev’d David Oxtoby

The Friends' AGM will take place on Sunday 24th March at 3pm in

Holy Trinity Church.

At that meeting we shall be electing members to serve for one year on

the the Executive committee. If you would like to be part of the group

that works to raise money in support of the church fabric, please

complete the form printed below and return it to The Friends. We look

forward to your support and welcome hard workers to our 'friendly'

team.

CHILDREN’S MINISTRY SUPPORT WORKER NEEDED Can you help? We need someone to support the parish’s ever-growing families and children’s ministry with practical and admin tasks for 2-4 hours per week. You would help with publicity and admin for families and children’s events and activities, maintaining our contacts list, communicating via Facebook, preparing orders of service, printing, looking after notice boards and anything else that comes up. Please don’t feel you have to be proficient in everything in the list above. We can be flexible with what you do, the hours you keep, and we can give you support and training where necessary. Your own computer would be helpful though. You won’t have to work with children, though taking this role will show how strongly you support the important work the parish does with families and young people. If you are interested in knowing more, please speak to Cara Parker ([email protected] or 07957 482472)

Prayer

Dear Lord, I don’t’ know who or what will cross my path today. But I do

now that You are my Rock and my Fortress.

You are my Shield and my Strong Tower. Help me to anchor myself to

You today. Teach me how to stand strong in you and choose only You

way today. Help me walk by Your truth and not my feelings.

Help me to embrace anything that comes my way as an opportunity to

see You at work and as an opportunity to point other to You.

Thank you that You love me and nothing can ever take that away from

me! Even if I fail today and fall short, You whisper Your unconditional

love deep into my soul and remind me that Your mercies are new

every morning.

That truly amazes me, Lord. Thank you for meeting with me today.

Would You wake me again tomorrow with the same sweet whisper of

Your Love? I can’t wait to meet with you again. Amen

Seafarers Barbara Vass, Sylvia Lester, June Walton and myself went to the Tilbury Seafarers Carol Service on 17th December. (I apologise for not having Christmassy pictures, but we all forgot to take cameras. Senior moments.) We were greeted at the door by lovely friendly smiles; I was even told that I didn’t need to move my car, which was blocking in all the other cars that had arrived earlier. (Or it may have been because they didn’t want to see my attempts at reversing.) There were more than 60 people attending. Mr Alexander Campbell ran the service. He has been Chair of Tilbury Seafarers for several years. I have met him on a few occasions; he is very knowledgeable, and has a whole heap of terrible jokes to share. There was a choir from a local church who sang beautifully, which was very uplifting, and Ray Irvin from the Salvation Army was there to play the piano.

There was a young woman who played the violin so wonderfully, she brought tears to my eyes. There was also a group of singers; they were the seafarers from two Philippine ships that were in dock at the time. They sang two carols, one in English and one in their own language.

The bible readings were read by those working at Tilbury, in several diverse accents and languages. Afterwards there was a light buffet, tea and coffee. It was all very delicious. The cakes were man-size portents, which the seafarers demolished easily. June & I happily shared one between us. Do you ever wonder where all the goodies come from that are in the shops? The Men and women I spoke to work six hours on and six hours off for eight or more months at a time, on high seas, with between eight and 40 crew members, depending on the size of the ship. If a family member is ill, or worse, you cannot just turn around and go home; you are reliant on friends and other family members to step in. They certainly go through a lot. A massive thank you to everyone who has been so supportive over the years, and hopefully for years to come.

God Bless, Josie Levy

Book Review

The Me I Want to Be by John Ortberg

I love this book; it is one of those books that you will pick up and read

again and again, and each time you will take more away from it. I have

a vision of my copy becoming worn out from being read so many times.

I started reading this while on holiday, and could not put the book down.

It is not a quick read, and you need to savour each chapter and take in

the words that John writes about having the Holy Spirit in your life:

surrendering yourself, the changes it will make to your day-to-day living,

and how you view life.

Life is not about what you were or are but what you can become.

The book helps you on your steps to becoming God’s best version of

you.

John writes in a light-hearted way by telling the reader stories of things

that have happened to him. You will find that you are able to relate to

the stories, as we all have those traits in our lives, and have possibly

been in similar situations. He helps answer the questions you want to

ask, and the book includes a few questionnaires that make you think of

how you react to things that happen in your daily life; it then helps you

find the tools you need so that you can adapt and learn to have faith

and trust in God.

John Ortberg is a senior pastor in San Francisco. He has written a few

books, and also there are some sermons on YouTube.

I would recommend this book.

Psalm 98

1 Sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvellous things;

his right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him.

2 The LORD has made his salvation known

and revealed his righteousness to the nations.

3 He has remembered his love and his faithfulness to Israel;

all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.

4 Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth,

burst into jubilant song with music;

5 make music to the LORD with the harp, with the harp and the sound of singing,

6 with trumpets and the blast of the ram’s horn—

shout for joy before the LORD, the King.

7 Let the sea resound, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.

8 Let the rivers clap their hands,

let the mountains sing together for joy;

9 let them sing before the LORD, for he comes to judge the earth.

He will judge the world in righteousness and the peoples with equity.
