The Julian Fiddle and Pickin' Contest is May 25th.  Save thedate folks, this contest is a lot of fun with outstanding fiddlersfrom Pee Wee to Seniors. What can be better than a beautifulday in Julian and amazing fiddling and pickin'?

We had four visitors at our 2nd Sunday Fiddle Tune Jam inJanuary!  Two from CSOTFA District 4, Cathy Kerry andChuck Landers.  Cathy and Carol McCollum had some greattwin fiddle going.  Chuck played backup on guitar.  We alsohad Carol Langer and Tim Shaffer, snowbirds fromAlbuquerque, playing fiddle who brought tunes we haven'theard in awhile.  We hope these musicians will come againmsoon. If you’re in our area on the 2nd, 3rd or 4th Sunday comejoin us!3rd Sunday Fiddle Tune Jam & Workshop HAS MOVED- The Fiddle Tune Jam is now at the Encinitas CommunityCenter.  There will be a workshop first and then the jam.  Thisjam is doing well and has been growing. Come visit us &check it out!Encinitas Community Center1140 Oakcrest Park Dr., Room 140Encinitas, CA 92024The pre-jam workshop is from 12:30 - 1:00PM, the jam isfrom 1:00 - 3:00PM4th Sunday Fiddle Tune Jam & Contest Practice -SOMETHING NEW!  Well, actually something old returning. The last hour of the jam will be for fiddlers to practice theircontest sets or for trying out a new song you aren't quite readyto play in the circle jam. We have fiddlers who have beencontest judges who will give feedback if you'd like.  Weappreciate Greg Gross for volunteering to provide the sound. Thanks Greg!It was good to see Larry Edwards again and Marvin Floydbrought his mandolin and fiddle.  We also had a couple ofvisiting musicians, we hope they'll become regulars.  CharliCrissy (who has become a member) played banjo and filled infor Dave Avery on bass when he took a break.  DennisO'Donald played backup on guitar and we talked him intosinging an Irish tune that everyone enjoyed

District 7 likes to support the endeavors of our members so hereis some information on the 2019 Julian Family Fiddle Camp puton by Avery Ellismann, a long time District 7 member. The campis an outstanding opportunity to learn from outstandingmusicians. The dates this year are April 10th – 14th and againhas world - renown artists providing instruction for fiddlers, bass players, old - time banjo players, mandolin players ,cellists and guitarists. It will also have special workshopson vocals and vocal harmony, Appalachian flatfoot dance, band dynamics and (of course) pie making.

CSOTFA has asked - and JFFC has provided - specialworkshops on backup guitar for Texas style fiddle, andworkshops that focus on building and executing contestfiddle sets.

Those not able to attend the camp but wishing to attendthe concerts are welcome. This year’s performances areheadlined by two emerging super groups, the Page Turnersand DEAN, with special guests invariably showing up tojoin in on stage. These are highly popular concerts, withtickets available on-line at https://www.artful.ly/julian-family-fiddle-camp.Also, the Julian Flash Jam will be held on Sunday, April14th, in the historic mining town of Julian, CA. Greetings today on the first day of spring from District 9. We arethankful that winter gave us an adequate amount of rainfall. Andlocally, we are not in a part of the state that was beset with floodingproblems. We're looking forward to balmy, and partly sunny, daysthis spring, along with lots of good music and friendship.

We were saddened to hear of the passing of Joe Menard. Manyremember Joe from the '80s and '90s as a participant in nearly all ofthe state events. In the early '90s he served as Distinct Nine'spresident, where he and his wife Millie (pre-deceased) were gracioushosts. Joe organized many play-outs for us throughout the year. And fiddlers from all over the state remember Joe as the organizer, when District 9 sponsored the Fiddle Contests at the AlamedaCounty Fair. These were always in the summer in early July. Joewas born in Canada, but was also a proud American. He brought agood, rich Canadian repertoire to our jams. We miss him.

Our regular 4th Sunday jams in Castro Valley have been going well, with good fiddling, picking, singing, and MC'ing. And the potlucksand visiting are not to be missed. The next jam is March 24, andApril's jam is on the 28th. Let your friends know.

At our District 9 officers meeting in February we discussed ways toincrease participation and membership, with several small concreteways to facilitate drawing in new visitors. The officers meeting alsoidentified how our district plans to support the State Contest. TheState Contest will be held this year at the Lodi Grape FestivalFairgrounds. We can always use additional volunteer support for acouple of hours. Just greet us and let us know.

As a reminder, the State Contest will be Friday and Saturday in April12-13.

Friday's schedule starts with a general membership meeting. Afterthat are the Senior, and Senior-Senior divisions (two rounds each). Then the popular "Anything Goes" competition. The evening windsup with a contra dance. For the contra dance, the fiddle music andrhythm will be supplied by an open band, led by experienced dancefiddlers from each district. For dancing, no previous experience isnecessary--the caller will explain and walk the participants througheach dance. It's always enjoyable.

Saturday's schedule has the remaining fiddle divisions (includingtwin fiddles) from morning through mid afternoon. Then mid tolate afternoon are Junior and Open Picking . In the evening will bethe final rounds for all the non-senior fiddle divisions, and thenawards.

Continue to work on good intonation, rhythm, and tempo. And donot let the melody get lost.

The album “I Sang The Song” (Life Of The Voice With A Heart) is full ofsongs that tell the story of the performer’s life. Wiseman told Peter Cooperand Thomas Jutz and the pair --who produced the album -- put his memoriesinto musical form. Story songs have always been a major part of his repertoire, including such standards as “Jimmy Brown The Newsboy.”

“As long as I can remember, the story-type songs have treated me tremendously. I remember when I was four or five yearsold, there were songs like ‘Granny’s Old Arm Chair,’ which was an old English ballad,” he told Billboard of his firstmemories of the style. “It talked about this guy’s grandmother that was living with him, and she had this favorite old chairthat she would sit in. She passed away, and left all the children a pretty good inheritance. But, she gave him that old armchair. He kept the chair, and years later, he became quite elderly. That chair fell down, and it was full of money -- one-poundEnglish pound notes. That’s the kind of songs that have done well for me my whole life.”

Cooper & Jutz say “Mac is the only person we know who actually heard Jimmie Rodgers on the radio -- back in the day.He was there for the birth of bluegrass music, as well as the last living original board member of the CMA. The breadth ofexperiences is incredible.”

Mac Wiseman was born on May 23, 1925, in Crimora, Virginia. He passed away from kidney failure at the age of 93 on February 24,2019. His parents, Howard Bell Wiseman, a miller, and Myra Ruth (Humphreys) Wiseman, oversaw a musical household; Mac firstperformed in public as an adolescent.

Mac Wiseman contracted polio at the age of 6 months. Due to his disabilities, while other children worked in the fields, Wisemanstayed inside listening to music. As a teenager, he purchased a guitar from a Sears-Roebuck catalog and began playing his favoritesongs while singing lyrics his mother transcribed from radio broadcasts.. He won a scholarship from the National Foundation for Polioto study piano, music theory and radio broadcasting at Shenandoah Conservatory in Dayton, Virginia. Wiseman first made his markin 1948 playing with bluegrass legends, first as a founding member of Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs’s Foggy Mountain Boys, andwith Bill Monroe’s Blue Grass Boys. Mr. Wiseman was featured on classics like “Can’t You Hear Me Callin’” and “Travelin’ ThisLonesome Road.” He formed his own group, the Country Boys (1953 to 1956). He reunited with Flatt to record three albums for RCARecords in the early 1970s.

Mr. Wiseman’s biggest hits as a solo artist were “The Ballad of Davy Crockett” in 1955 and “Jimmy Brown, the Newsboy” in 1959,both of which reached the Top 10 of the country chart. His other early successes included interpretations of songs like “Love Lettersin the Sand,” and “I Wonder How the Old Folks Are at Home. Mr. Wiseman’s signature song, “’Tis Sweet to Be Remembered,” waswritten in 1902, and his version owed as much to vintage pop and swing music as it did to country or bluegrass. This record was typicalof the earnest, reverberating delivery that would sustain him in a seven-decade solo career, in which he released more than 60 albums.Mr. Wiseman was a successful music producer and entrepreneur. He was the founding secretary of the board of the Country MusicFoundation in 1958. Wiseman’s Hall of Fame career includes being among the founding members of the Country Music Association.Mr. Wiseman was elected to the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Hall of Fame in 1993 and was for decades regarded asone of the idiom’s elder statesmen.Mr. Wiseman recorded for Capitol, MGM and a number of other labels after leaving Dot in 1963, creating versions of songs as variedas the New Orleans rhythm-and-blues standard “I Hear You Knockin’” and Fleetwood Mac’s “Never Going Back Again.” Heperformed in venues of all stripes, from college campuses and bluegrass band shells to the Hollywood Bowl. The greatest honor bestowed on the Country Music Hall of Fame inductee and National Heritage Fellowship recipient may be hisnickname — “The Voice with a Heart.” In a sometimes fickle and cutthroat business, Wiseman maintained a reputation as one of thefriendliest and most generous of figures.Survivors include two sons, Scott and Randy; three daughters, Maxine Wiseman, Chris Haynes and Linda Parr; a brother, Kenny; asister, Virginia Davis; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
