With only one functioning lung, a prognosis of fourteen days to live, and being in a medically-induced coma for a year, Sean Swarner is the first cancer survivor to stand on top of the world. Sean has broken through defined human limitation in order to redefine the way the world views success.Sean was diagnosed with two deadly, different, and unrelated forms of cancer, once at the age of thirteen and again at the age of sixteen. After an incredibly poor prognosis, and being read his last rites, Sean astounded the medical community when he survived both these brutal diseases. He realized that after defeating cancer twice, no challenge would ever be too great, no peak too high.Sean proved his theory when he crested the peak of Mt. Everest. As the first cancer survivor to do so, Sean decided to continue climbing and has since topped the highest peaks in Africa, Europe, South America, Australia, Antarctica, and North America, thus completing the Seven Summits. Upon skiing to both the South and the North Poles, Sean completed the Explorer’s Grand Slam. With the completion of the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii, Sean is the only person in history to accomplish these inhuman feats.

As Sean continues to defy the odds, test his own endurance and inspire and motivate people around the world, he shares his message of healing, hope, and triumph worldwide. Sean also serves as a source of inspiration as the founder of the non-profit organization, The CancerClimber Association, as author of the book “Keep Climbing,” and as a motivational speaker to corporations, universities, and other organizations around the globe.

Golf TournamentThis year, the golf tournament will be held at the fabulous Keystone River Course! This par-71, Hurdzan-Fry course brings an element of drama to your game. The par-35 front nine is oriented around the path of the Snake River and the par-36 back nine winds through a lodgepole pine forest. Impressive elevation changes, variable bunkers, water hazards,

and five sets of tees on each hole combine to challenge golfers of all abilities. The 16th hole features a 194-foot elevation drop from tee to green and the scenic 18th hole offers 12 bunkers and spectacular views of Lake Dillon. Add to that the magnificent views of snow-capped peaks and wildlife and it’s easy to see this is a golfing experience unlike any other. Total yardage is 4,762 - 6,886.

"Our philosophy is to design golf courses that stir the spirit, exceed expectation and defy understanding. In doing this, golf becomes a complex puzzle requiring strength, skill and strategy - set in an environment of unquestioning beauty, yet subject to the irrepressible forces of nature." - Dr. Michael Hurdzan.

The golf tournament will commence with registration starting at 8:00 AM with a shotgun start at 9:30 AM on Sunday, September 8. Awards will be given for the three teams with the lowest net and lowest gross, as well as for longest drives and closest to the pin. A continental breakfast will be served along with a boxed lunch. Appetizers will be served during the awards ceremony at the clubhouse following the tournament.

The golf registration and hole sponsorship form are included online. Also, look for the special sponsorship opportunities provided this year!

Come join us for a wonderful round of golf!

Is Your Toilet Running? 5K Fun Run/WalkThe Conference is hosting its fourth annual “Is Your Toilet Running?” 5K Fun Run/Walk. You do not want to miss this fun event! The event starts at 2:00 PM on Sunday, September 8. If you don't run or walk, then volunteer! The name of the event was chosen to highlight water conservation:

• A running toilet wastes valuable drinking water and places additional demands on the water supply.

• A running toilet increases hydraulic loading and reduces organic loading in wastewater, decreasing water resource recovery efficiencies.

The Fun Run/Walk is a fundraising event for the RMWEA Public Education Committee. All proceeds help support the Stockholm Junior Water Prize. This event generates funds through sponsorship signs which are posted along the race course. The start and

Sunday Special Session Workshops

The educational opportunities start earlier at this year's conference. Make sure to register and attend one of the concurrent technical special sessions, including:

Community Engineering Corps (CECorps)

CECorps will present the “What’s in My Backyard” outreach and educational campaign. Participants will be led by a CECorps representative through the CECorps project process and best practices to working with underserved communities. This includes the “soft skills” and practices to successfully partnering with, communicating with, and uplifting economically disadvantaged organizations and beneficiaries.

Participants will be led through online educational modules, which will include guided discussions around engineering practices they feel are unique to their region, what communities or organizations are economically disadvantaged, and who are the regulators or state and federal actors that may be connected with those underserved communities. At the end of the workshop, participants will feel ready to work with CECorps in developing or implementing a project and making a lasting and meaningful impact on their communities using their engineering knowledge and expertise.

Nutrient Removal Technology and Planning

As effluent nutrient limits become more widely promulgated in Colorado, many municipal water resource reclamation facilities (WRRFs) will be required to perform biological nitrogen and/or phosphorus removal. Since biological nutrient removal (BNR) can be energetically and chemically intensive, it is necessary for WRRFs to develop a holistic understanding of factors that can impact BNR capacity, performance and operational costs.

This session will provide participants with an opportunity to become familiar with established and emerging concepts within the field of nutrient removal and earn Training Units (TUs). Participants will be engaged through a hands-on exercise of nutrient removal planning. This activity will require participants to collaboratively build a compliance roadmap for a hypothetical treatment facility needing to meet Colorado's Regulation 85 and 31 limits. The results from each breakout group will be presented to all attendees and a discussion of benefits/considerations will occur. This session is geared towards plant operation and management professionals, young professionals, regulators, and general wastewater practice professionals.

Visit the conference website for more information and an updated list of Sunday's special sessions.

Meet and Greet ReceptionStart your conference off right by attending the Meet and Greet Reception. This is an opportunity to be welcomed, catch up with old friends, meet new friends, and to win prizes! Come and meet our AWWA, RMSAWWA, RMWEA, and WEF representatives, as well as exhibitors and vendors. This is your time to relax and enjoy yourself before the real work at the conference begins. All conference participants are invited, and it is free of charge. Light appetizers will be served, and a cash bar will be available. This event follows the Sunday Special Session Workshops, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Gallery and Lakeside Suite on the 3rd Floor at Keystone Lodge.

LET THE GAMES BEGIN!Toilet Bowl Trivia

Take the plunge and test your water knowledge in the always-entertaining Toilet Bowl Trivia Competition. Teams seeking the coveted Golden Toilet trophy will have to demonstrate their acumen in categories such as water, wastewater, science, pop-culture, and arts and letters. This is a fun event whether viewing from the sidelines or competing. Join the Sewer Dude for this not‐to‐be‐missed event taking place in the Exhibit Hall on Monday, September 9 from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM. It is sure to include a lotta ins, lotta outs, and lotta what-have-you’s.

Throw the ringer by preregistering your team by August  30. To preregister, email your team name and the names of your four team members to [email protected]. You may also form your team at the conference and notify Blair before the competition.

Pipe Tapping, Hydrant Hysteria, and Meter Madness Competitions

The RMSAWWA Competitions Committee is thrilled to announce the addition of the Hydrant Hysteria and Meter Madness events to go along with the always popular Pipe Tapping contest. The fun is scheduled for Tuesday, September 10 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM. • Watch a team of four simulate how a service line is installed in the field by tapping a pipe, running copper and connecting to a meter yoke at an incredibly fast pace.• Observe teams of three take several parts and build a fire hydrant in record speed while racing against each other. • Witness individuals dump a bucket of meter parts (some don’t belong) and build a meter in an attempt to finish before the other competitors. The meter is then tested for proper operation and leaks. Show your support and cheer on the teams as they attempt to qualify for Nationals to be held at ACE 2020 in Orlando, Florida. The tradition of tapping a keg of beer will happen some time after lunch providing a great time to collaborate with others in the industry. If your utility would like to participate in the regional competitions in Keystone, complete the registration form online before August 28. Call Roger Harshman at 303.658.2505 for more information.

Water Taste Test CompetitionThink your water is really the best?! The 12th Annual Rocky Mountain Water Taste Test Competition for water utilities from Colorado, New Mexico, and Wyoming will be held on Monday, September 9.
