THE QUINN FILE SSU head coach Shawn Quinn is in his first year as head coach of the Tigers but the Chicago native has made his rounds on the collegiate level having coached at nine other programs in addition to SSU. Those programs include The Citadel, Tennessee Tech, Western Carolina, Charleston Southern, Northwestern State, Georgia Southern, Louisiana Lafayette, Tennessee and Louisiana State.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATIONThe SSU roster is made up of play-ers from nine states: Georgia, Flor-ida, South Carolina, Virginia, New York, Texas, Ohio, Alabama and Nevada, as well as the Bahamas.

WE’RE BACKAfter spending the past 19 years in NCAA Division I, the Tiger athletic program is now back in NCAA Division II and the Southern Inter-collegiate Conference (SIAC).

WELCOME TO THE MARSHThe SSU football staff welcomes seven new coaches including for-mer Tiger standout defensive end Marquis Smith who will coach the linebackers. Other new coaches include Nate Baker (co-offensive coordinator/tackles & tight end coach), Manrey Saint-Amour (offensive line coach), B.J. Johnson (wide receivers coach), Zach John-son (safeties coach), Trey Morgan (cornerback coach) and Aaron Pridemore (tight end coach)

NEW VOICE

Shawn Christopher, also known as J. Chris, is the new voice of the Tigers, serving as the SSU public address announcer.

TRANSFER USSU has 12 players on the roster that have transferred from other schools. The programs, which range from FBS to junior college, include Georgia, UMASS, Ap-palachian State, Tennessee State, Bluefield, Valdosta State, Stetson, South West Oklahoma, The Cit-adel, Georgia Military, Tennessee Tech and Culver-Stockton.

SURVIVORSSU signee Kyle Frazier is a cancer survivor. Frazier was diag-nosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in April 2019 but after chemother-apy treatments, he was declared cancer free in August 2019. The Augusta, Georgia native will en-rolled at SSU in January 2020 and plans to join the football team.

FOR YOUR VIEWING PLEASURESSU fans who can’t make some of the games will still be able to see the Tigers thanks to ESPN and Flo-Sports. The Savannah State football team will make at least six appear-ances via livestream this season between ESPN and FloSports. The October 5 road game at Charleston Southern will be shown on ESPN+ as part of the Big South Football Television Package and the Tigers home contest with Fort Valley State on November 2 will be aired on ESPN3 as part of the SIAC Football ESPN agreement. SSU’s

appearances on FloSports includes games with Benedict (September 21), Morehouse (Sept. 28), Clark Atlanta (Oct. 19) and Albany State (Oct. 26).

PRO TIESDefensive coordinator/defensive line coach Thomas Sims and linebacker coach Marquis Smith both played professional football. Sims, a sixth round draft pick in the 1990 NFL draft played with the Kansas City Chiefs, Indianapolis Colts and the Minnesota Vikings. Smith played a year in the Indoor Football League with the Bismark Bucks and one year in the National Arena League with the Jacksonville Sharks.

HOME GROWNSSU has eight players in its roster from six different of the local high schools: Islands, Savannah Christian, Johnson, Windsor Forest, Memorial and Jenkins.

THE SIZE OF ITOffensive linemen Michael Johnson and Bryan Manuel-Mots are both the tallest players on the team at 6-7 but Manuel-Mots is the biggest at 330lbs. Wide receiver Dorian Metts is the shortest player on the roster at 5-7 while fellow wide receiver James Kicklighter is the lightest at 150lbs.

FAN FRIENDLYThe 2019 SSU football schedule is fan friendly. Other than the trip to Alcorn State, the remaining road games are within an four hour driving distance.

NEW LOOKThe football team will break away from wearing the traditional orange helmets and instead will wear royal blue helmets which contains the SSU athletic logo.

HE’S BACKJoshua Peacock returns to SSU as the new Assistant Athletic Director for Media Relations. Peacock served under current Athletic Director Opio Mashariki as the Assistant Media Relations Director from 2012-15.

HOMECOMINGThe Augusta Classic will be a homecoming for three SSU players. D’Angelo Durham and Dameien Rodgers are both from Augusta and Ronnie Johnson is from nearby Screven County.

GETTING OFFENSIVESSU scored 60 points and had 554 yards of offense in last week’s win

over Virginia Lynchburg. It was the most points scored by a SSU team since 1992 when they scored 63 points against Livingstone. It was also the most offensive yards by a Tiger team since 1988 when SSU had 559 yards against Morehouse.

DOUBLE TROUBLERunning backs D’Angelo Durham and Miles Broadnax combined to rush for 225 yards last week. Durham had 125 yards while Broadnax ran for 100 yards on just four carries.

PLUGGING THE HOLESSU’s defense held Virginia Lynch-burg to just 3 yards rushing. It was the best defensive effort of stopping the run since holding Lane to 13 yards in 1998.

CHANGING SIDESFormer SSU running back Jayden McCloud is now a running back at Benedict.

SECOND QUARTER SURGESSU has outscored their opponents 32-7 in the second quarter.

TRIPLE THREATQuarterback D’Vonn Gibbons is al-ready a threat to opposing teams to

run or pass the ball but now he has added punter to his resume. Last week, Gibbons punted four times and averaged 36.8 yards per punt. He had a long of 47 yards and two of his punts landed inside the 20 yard line.

AUGUSTA BLUESThe last time SSU played in Augus-ta, the Tigers suffered a 23-21 loss to Concordia-Selma in 2009. SSU’s last win in Augusta came in 2002 when they beat Morris Brown 21-20.

COMMON OPPONENTSSavannah State and Benedict have four common conference opponents: Fort Valley State, Albany State, Morehouse and Clark Atlanta.

LOOKING BACKDuring the 1992 season, the Tigers ran a two-quarterback system. Augusta’s Chad Alexander threw for 1,686 yards and 16 touchdowns while Lincolnton native Greg Le-verett passed for 360 yards and five touchdowns while running for 300 yards and five touchdowns. The result was a 8-3 regular season record and a trip to the first round of the Division II playoffs.
