If you heard that there is going to be a program about Einstein’s general theory of relativity, you might think it will be filled with scientific jargon that is impossible to understand. Quite the opposite! Light Falls is an unforgettable symphony of exquisite music and theatrical performance that takes you on a journey through the universe.

“Albert Einstein’s most beautiful discovery is the general theory of relativity, and I want people to experience that beauty,” said Brian Greene, producer and professor of physics and mathematics at Columbia University. To capture the story of Einstein’s discovery, Greene and his partners put together a powerful musical score and immersive visuals that make you feel as though you’re inside the workings of the theory.

Greene joined forces with 59 Productions for extraordinary projection techniques, composer Jeff Beal, and a team of experienced actors. Every word the actors speak comes directly from historical records, so it’s like you’re hearing from the scientists themselves.

As the story unfolds, you’ll see how breakthrough moments and science are interwoven and brought to life, so you can grasp his ideas and his elation when he ultimately “sees the light.”

“I am deeply honored, along with Emilio Estefan, my beloved husband of 40 years, to be the 2019 recipients of the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song,” said Gloria Estefan in response to the announcement that they have been awarded the Gershwin Prize.

WMHT will air the music special Emilio & Gloria Estefan: The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song on Friday, May 3. This is the first time the Gershwin Prize has been awarded to a married couple or to musician-songwriters of Hispanic descent.

In June, American Masters is premiering programs that trace the journeys of two men — each different, yet tremendously influential.

Robert Shaw — Man of Many Voices presents an intimate portrait of his life as a choral music conductor and innovator of music in the 20th century. You’ll learn more about his unique gift for crafting and conducting music, the many lives he shaped, and how his work lives on today.

His successes were remarkable; his struggles fierce. As a young man, he overcame a lack of formal musical training with raw talent, hard work, and great communication skills. He rose to the highest levels in an elite group of conductors and

music directors, while bonding with the tens of thousands of amateurs whose worlds he touched.

Throughout the film, you’ll see and hear

archival footage, photographs, and recordings

from different eras mixed

with modern-day interviews. Shaw

believed that music should be a part of everyone’s life. “The arts may indeed be not the luxury of the few, but the last best hope of humanity — to inhabit with joy this planet,” he says.

Terrence McNally also believes in the power of arts to transform society. “We need to love one another more and see how connected we really are. I think that’s the message of art,” he says in Terrence McNally: Every Act of Life.

He too rose above challenges including his abusive alcoholic parents, growing up gay, and his own fight with lung cancer.

You’ll follow his six-decade career as a trailblazing playwright, librettist, scriptwriter, and outspoken LGBTQ activist. In addition to new interviews with McNally, the film features insights from his friends, family, and stars of stage and screen including Christine Baranski, Tyne Daly, Angela Lansbury, Rita Moreno, and others.

The film is riveting and thought-provoking!

Were ancient whales always large mammals roaming the seas? Are birds really dinosaurs? Were elephants once the size of rabbits? Fascinating new information about the origins of whales, crocodiles, and other creatures will be revealed as you watch the premiere of When Whales Walked: Journeys in Deep Time. The two-hour special is part of a new production partnership between PBS and the Smithsonian Channel™.

The film introduces you to the surprising ancestors of animals we know and love. You’ll be amazed when you hear scientists

and experts from around the world reveal unexpected evidence. The film also looks through the lens of

deep time to study the planet today and ask important questions about the future,
