THE IMPACT2

Hello,

I am Ethan Pennell and I am 11 years old! I have vascular ehlers danlos, a genetic disease that affects multiple organs and blood vessels throughout the body and A autoimmune/autoinflamatory disease in which my body rejects my own lungs. I spent 14 days on heart lung bypass and I have had 2 strokes. I was so lucky to be chosen to be the 2019 Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals miracle child! It was so much fun and I met so many amazing people. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to all the donors that made this experience so awesome. I also want to say thank you to the doctors, nurses and hospital staff of Oishei Children’s Hospital because without you all I would not be here today! So many of the hospital staff are now like our family! This experience was so awesome and I was so happy to be able to help give back to other kids like me!

Thank you and love to you all,Ethan Pennell

On behalf of John R. Oishei Children's Hospital (OCH) and The Children's Hospital of

Buffalo Foundation, we want to thank all of our donors, partners, volunteers and staff for

your generosity and support.

Oishei Children’s Hospital provides life-saving, critical care to our entire region, from

the PA line to the edge of Lake Ontario. Every child, mom and family are cared for with

compassion, and the highest level of quality and expertise. In fact, OCH was recognized

nationally by the Leapfrog Group as a Top Children’s Hospital both in 2018 and 2019.

This places OCH as a top 10 children’s hospital for quality and patient safety. And we couldn’t do it without your support.

Did you know, nearly 70% of the patients and families cared for at OCH are covered

through Medicaid? This means the vast majority of our patients and families face

overwhelming economic hardships. Medicaid also covers nearly all of our children living

with chronic, highly complex medical conditions. These little heroes thrive largely because

of your support and your heartfelt compassion for the cause that is children’s health.

In 2019, nearly 200,000 moms and children were cared for by our compassionate and highly

trained medical teams. Thanks to our donors, our Kiwanis Level I Pediatric Trauma Program

provided highly specialized care to over 8,600 children, The Children’s Guild Foundation

Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) cared for almost 900 precious babies and over

10,200 surgeries were performed in our Tops Friendly Markets Ambulatory Surgery Center.

Our generous donors also helped us develop new programs for children with complex and

chronic medical needs in our Variety Tent #7 Robert Warner Rehabilitation Center and The

Children’s Guild Foundation Autism Center, ensuring the over 9,000 children with complex

medical and behavioral needs and those visiting us for speech, physical and occupational

therapies receive the highest level of care-coordinated services.

The global pandemic in 2020 is changing all of our lives. The impact of Covid-19 on

hospitals has been severe, and the unknowns relative to its long-term impact are expected

for many years to come. Please know that OCH is here, is adjusting to the changes,

and focused on preserving the tertiary care needed for the moms and children in our

community, many of which are only available at Oishei Children’s Hospital. Continued

financial support is critical and necessary to protect and enhance access to services for

thousands of children, babies and moms in the future here, in our community.

We are here for the first-time mom, for the fragile 24-week twins, for the first grade boy

who accidentally fell off his bike, for the little girl in oncology who feels different because

she lost her hair, for the little brother who has trouble speaking, for the teenager with

anxiety and depression – for support, for comfort, for reassurance…for answers. And we

are here because of YOUR support. Thank you!

We hope you enjoy this report which highlights many of our generous community

supporters, partners and volunteers. While we celebrate our positive impact in 2019, please

know the needs are greater than ever, and through your generosity, we will remain strong,

delivering the highest quality and compassionate care to every patient and family we see.

With sincere gratitude,

Andrew D. Bennett

THE WHYCARING FOR OUR COMMUNITY

4

WHAT IS MEDICAID?• Medicaid is health insurance that covers families

who are facing economic hardships or children with a highly complex, chronic medical condition. Medicaid, being funded by the government, reimburses for hospital services at a much lower rate than private insurance.

• What this means is Oishei Children's Hospital: Treats every patient, regardless of medical

coverage or ability to pay Treats the sickest kids in our region who have the

most specialized and advanced care needs

• With nearly 70% of patients and families being covered by Medicaid there is a significant need for community support to help the hospital provide life-saving, high-quality care.

• Philanthropy helps the hospital thrive, providing: Financial support for gaps in reimbursement • For example, Cochlear implants, which allow

children with hearing impairment the ability to hear, are not fully reimbursed

State-of-the-art technology which is not covered by insurance

Support for programs and hospital services not covered by insurance

Oishei Children’s Hospital is proud to be part of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals (CMN Hospitals), a North American non-profit organization that raises funds for children’s hospitals, medical research and community awareness of children’s health issues. As part of the CMN Hospital Network OCH is partnering with local and national brands in our community to support the moms, kids and babies at OCH.

When you see a balloon campaign at our partners here in Western New York, you can be confident that those donations are going directly to helping the kids here at Oishei Children’s Hospital.

Eric knows firsthand the importance of children’s hospitals and the heavy burden carried by a family who must face the serious health issues of a child. Eric’s little brother Evan passed away at just 11 years of age, after complications from Cerebral Palsy. Everything Eric does in the community is done, with Evan – and his smile – on his mind and in his heart. Evan is the inspiration and Eric’s motivation, and The Eric Wood Fund is his legacy.

Funds raised to support the Eric Wood Fund at The Children’s Hospital of Buffalo Foundation have an immediate, positive impact on the comfort and care of chronically ill children and their families. We are proud to partner with Eric to enhance vital services provided through the Family Resource Center, Child Life and Stone’s Buddies Program.

Eric is focused on bringing families together and providing positive experiences during what can be very challenging times for a family with a chronically ill child. Some Eric Wood Fund supported efforts includes the Stone’s Buddies Holiday “Adopt-a-Family”, unique Parent Date Nights, and exclusive Buffalo Bills Game Day Suite Experiences.

We thank Eric for his continued support of Oishei Children’s Hospital and the families we serve. His commitment and dedication to directly providing them with much needed assistance means so much to us all!

• Help siblings understand what their brother or sister is going through

• Simplify complex medical terminology for children and parents
