FROM THE PRESIDENTIn year two of the 2018-2023 Strategic Plan, Humber continues toLead, Transform and Differentiate. This annual report highlights manyof the accomplishments that advance our role as a global leader inpolytechnic education and deliver on our promises to our students.

Humber significantly grew and strengthened partnerships to createlearning opportunities and prepare our students to be career-readycitizens. Locally, the college is collaborating with industries to developnew programs, conduct innovative research in manufacturing, andimplement its cloud infrastructure strategy. Through the Humber-Seneca Polytechnic Partnership, we are providing access to newpathways and shared resources. Internationally, Humber continues tobe an active participant in the Global Polytechnic Alliance withpostsecondary institutions in New Zealand and Denmark, and offertraining in Asia. Finally, we launched Unlimited – Humber’s first everfundraising campaign to support student learning.

It is our exceptional Board of Governors, Executive Team, staff,students, and industry and community partners that make ourachievements possible. Thank you and congratulations Humber.

Centres of Innovation (COIs)Humber’s Barrett Centre forTechnology Innovation isdelivering on its commitmentsto advance multi-disciplinaryapplied research, connectstudents with industry experts,and create innovativesolutions for the Canadianmanufacturing sector. As partof Humber’s work integratedlearning, students are buildingand programming interactiveeducational display units withKUKA Robotics using theirrobotic arms, while SEW-EURODRIVE and SICKSensor Intelligence aredeveloping Humber’s firstautomated guided vehicle withsupport from Humber studentsand other industry partners.

Experiential Learning and Partnerships Understandingthat one of the best ways to develop work-ready skills isthrough real life experience, Humber continues to invest inenhancing the quality of its work integrated learningopportunities and its collaborations with industry sectors.The college piloted a new digital platform that connectsstudents and faculty to course-aligned experientialprojects from industry and not-for-profit partners.

Humber’s new Strategic Partnership Framework,developed in collaboration with industry and communitystakeholders, outlines a process for building andstrengthening partnerships, such as that with AmazonWeb Services (AWS) Inc. Among the planned activities,AWS is supporting Humber’s first comprehensive full-timeCloud Computing Ontario Graduate Certificate in Canada,pending Ministry funding approval. Given current globalcloud computing needs, it is anticipated that graduates ofthis program will be in high demand. The first intake isexpected to launch in Winter 2021.

Humber also became a Designated PearsonVue TestCentre, enabling it to provide AWS testing servicesincluding certification examinations for companies such asMicrosoft, Cisco Systems and CompTia. Humber is one ofonly two colleges with this designation.

Employability skills The college’s newlycreated Institutional Learning Outcomes guidecurriculum development that builds thecompetencies required for workplace success.Humber faculty are developing curriculum andactivities that deeply engage and empowerstudents in their learning, foster skills like criticalthinking, and encourages students to make boldchoices that sets them apart in the labourmarket. Through Humber’s collaborations in theGlobal Polytechnic Alliance, the collegelaunched a new course on systems thinkingwhere students collaborated on interdisciplinaryprojects with their colleagues in New Zealandand Denmark.

The Digital World To provide students andemployees with a transformative academic andwork experience, Humber continuedimplementing its Digital Campus Plan. Duringthis phase, the college expanded wirelessservices to all student residences, and withsupport from Ignite, it expanded the openaccess learning space at the North campus.

As students increasingly juggle work, family and financial responsibilities, theirlearning needs and expectations are changing. Conventional models of highereducation no longer satisfy these needs and are leaving many students behind. Inresponse to this growing reality, Humber is transforming the educationallandscape by pioneering exciting, new approaches that will give students morechoice and flexibility in their learning. We are leading the way to a future wherehigher education is accessible to all.

ACCESSIBLE EDUCATION 2019/2020 ACHIEVEMENTS PAGE 2Enhancing student access and mobility Humber is committedto developing unique and attractive pathways that recognize thevalue of a student’s previous education and provide seamless,accessible and innovative opportunities for furthering theireducation.

Following the introduction of Seneca’s Workplace Safety andPrevention diploma, Humber recognized a natural fit with itsBachelor of Health Sciences, Workplace Health and Wellness. Anew pathway was created allowing Seneca’s graduates to transferinto Year 2 of the program. Humber’s current diploma-to-degreepathway offerings include 43 Seneca programs providing greatereducational choice for students. The two colleges are on track todevelop additional pathways in the areas of fashion, sustainableenergy, and supply chain management among others.

Humber has also worked on COIL projects and curriculum. Shortfor “collaborative online international learning”, COIL is quicklybecoming a global standard in international academiccollaboration. Projects typically result in the joint development anddelivery of a course component by two or more instructors frompartner institutions in different counties. In 2019-2020, professorsfrom Humber’s Faculty of Social and Community Services andPeru’s Universidad San Ignacio de Loyola co-developedcurriculum for courses in Biology and Community Development.

Embedding Indigenous knowledges andculture Guided by the IndigenousEducation Plan and Protocol for IndigenousCommunity Engagement, Humberstrengthened partnerships to advanceIndigenous Education and Engagementthrough community education events,professional development training, andcurriculum development. Humber hostedits 7th annual Indigenous KnowledgeGathering, bringing together a diversearray of educators, practitioners, scholars,students and members of Indigenouscommunities to engage in meaningfulconversations about the role and inherentresponsibilities of education. The Collegealso provided training to faculty and staff,revised curriculum to ensure it reflectedIndigenous ways of being, knowing anddoing, and for the 11th time, offeredIndigenous Camp Choice to introduceIndigenous students in the 7th and 8thgrades to potential career paths andpossibilities in postsecondary education.

The healthiest campus in CanadaThe pan-institutional Healthy andInclusive Community Taskforce wasestablished to guide the collegethrough a planning and implementationprocess that aims to make Humber thehealthiest campus in Canada.

Early intervention maximizesstudent success The collegecontinued to implement and evaluateinterventions aimed at enhancingstudent success and retention byidentifying students’ needs andchallenges, and offering a broad rangeof services and outreach activities tomeet those needs. This approach isincreasingly leading to enhancedstudent outcomes as well as buildingevidence-based knowledge to supportstudent success.

Sustainable and accessible environmentCommitted to maintaining its role as a nationalleader in sustainability, Humber launched its2019-2024 Sustainability Plan. It outlines abold approach to shaping healthy, inclusiveand sustainable communities through culturalchange, leadership and collaboration. Humberachieved a Gold ranking in the SustainableTracking and Assessment Rating System(STARS), a self-reporting framework forcolleges and universities internationally tomeasure their sustainability performance. Thecollege has also been designated one ofCanada’s Greenest Employers for the past fiveyears.

To evaluate the accessibility of Humber’sfacilities and exterior spaces, the collegeemployed an external auditor to perform anaccessibility audit and make recommendationsthat exceed building code requirements. Theauditors identified several opportunities for thecollege to consider and improve the usabilityof its campuses for all people.

Investing in learning and working spaces To support thedelivery of curriculum and community well-being, Humberrefurbished and modernized 30 classrooms, as well as hallwaysand other public circulation and administrative spaces. Thecollege’s way-finding app, "Humber Campus Compass“ waslaunched at the North campus with plans to expand the service tothe Lakeshore campus in the fall of 2020.

Work towards achieving carbon reduction targets continued withthe transformation of Building NX, previously one the mostinefficient buildings on campus. It now uses 97 per cent lessheating energy and 70 per cent less energy overall than beforeand is now a comfortable space with ideal temperatures andample daylight. This retrofit set a new standard for buildingretrofits that prioritizes the conservation of its resources, as wellas the well-being, comfort and performance of the Humbercommunity. The building was awarded the Zero Carbon Building -Design Certification by the Canada Green Building Council(CaGBC), making it the first existing building in Canada to bezero carbon certified.

Strengthening our communications In a world where activity isincreasingly pushed online, Humber undertook a comprehensivereview of its website and future web needs, resulting in websiteenhancements and new privacy and security standards. Building NX

The Unlimited Campaign was launched in 2019 and is a majormilestone, representing Humber’s first public fundraisingcampaign. To date, the college has raised $35 million of its $50million goal. The campaign was named for the unlimitedpossibilities it will create for Humber students, providing them withthe tools they need to thrive and succeed – both now and in thefuture. Unlimited will Ignite Discovery & Innovation, AccelerateStudent Potential and Transform the Learning Experience by:

• Increasing student support to reduce financial stress and tocreate a healthy, vibrant learning environment;

• Developing career-ready citizens who think creatively and canmeet the business and community challenges of the worldthrough skills and experiential learning opportunities; and,

• Providing an optimal learning environment that provides studentswith the tools and resources needed for educationalachievement – state-of-the-art learning spaces, technology,resources, excellent faculty and programs.

The campaign is also about pride, awareness and engagementamong Humber’s alumni, empowering them to serve asambassadors to the wider community. With this support, Humber’sstudents will be well-positioned for career and personal success.

Investing in corporate education and entrepreneurialactivity As the new provider of the Real EstateSalesperson Program in Ontario, Humber launched acutting-edge program delivered on behalf of the Real EstateCouncil of Ontario (RECO). Offered online and in locationsacross Ontario, the program enables students to startcoursework at any point during the year, without the timecommitment of a full-time, semester-based program.Launched in September 2019, 7009 learners enrolled in theprogram in its first 8 months.

Humber grew its English Language training in Asia with theopening of a new training centre in collaboration with KansaiGaidai University in Osaka, Japan. The college alsoprovided customized teacher training in Taiwan atHungkwang University in Taichung.

Modernizing human resources Humber launched a newHuman Resource Management System which providesemployees with enhanced automated services, improvedadvice through data and analytics, and more timely accessto information for decision-making. This fully-integratedcloud-based system manages the entire employee lifecyclefrom hire to retire and incorporates leading HR practice thatwill deliver on Humber’s talent objectives.

Responding to changing marketsChanging student demographics,labour market needs, andgovernment policies and prioritiescontinue to influence the post-secondary education landscape andshift Humber’s institutional priorities.Within this evolving environment,Humber conducted pan-institutionalresearch on its current marketing,recruitment and conversionprocesses with an aim to establish amore rigorous and structuredapproach to these operations.
