The Junction Co. was founded in 2018, by ten Pilbara-based small business owners who wanted to sell their artisan wares via a new pop-up retail platform, while also providing a workshop program to share their handmade skills with the community. Since it’s inception, The Junction Co. have evolved and have established as an arts not-for-profit organisation, with a clear vision to engage, grow and empower regional creative industries.

The Junction Co.’s mission is to advocate and connect regional creatives with workspace, learning opportunities and networks, to uplift their endeavours and create an environment which both local community and creatives can support each other.

To achieve our mission, we have five clear strategic priorities.

The Gallery+Studio learning pathways have been designed so individuals can navigate their knowledge and skill development, growthand experiences through formal and informal education points. These pathways provide various entry points to engage, grow and empower individuals on their creative enterprise and artistic excellence journey.

Critical to the implementation of the programs was the reimagining of the Courthouse Gallery facility to establish a working studio, which now contains a maker’s space for creatives to realise their ideas, a photography studio, to take the necessary product and styling photographs, a tech lab, a space where the digital business can occur and an artist in residence space, for guest creatives to share their knowledge and skills.

1Each weekend focuses a particular creative medium (digital, ceramics, manual arts, textiles), with day one featuring hands on skill and techniques sessions relating to the material and day two the practical applications of the techniques to form a product. The Maker Bootcamp weekends will cater to all skill levels and have selected the focus areas based on community feedback and a creative enterprise research scan.

The Maker Bootcamps will be facilitated by Pilbara-based makers where possible, alongside industry experts who will be bought to Hedland for the weekend sessions. The facilitators will be tasked with opening minds and injecting fresh ideas through conceptual design and technical excellence, enabling attendees to use their skills to develop new products for their creative enterprise.

The first day focus is on technique and exploring different methods to create surface pattern designs. This process takes the attendees through various ways they can “Make their mark” on a variety of fabrics using techniques such as screen-printing, shibori and silk painting.

The second day is about practical applications for the fabrics they have created such as pattern making, garment design and quilting with a view to create a new product.

2 3The additional workshops will target specific skill sets required by some, not all, creative entrepreneurs. These workshops will examine the speficis of studio technology and equipment, software and programming, and other technical skills required. For example, practical workshops explaining how to use the 3D printer, scanner and phtography equipment. As well, the necessary software and programs which are used by the equipment.

The additional workshops also include supporting creative entrepreneurs to attend skill development sessions beyond Hedland and the Pilbara.

Finally, the additional workshops also include a condensed creative enterprise program for Hedland youth. The 12-week program has been designed for students to explore different mediums to develop a product, go through the business acumen steps to develop a finished, scalable product ready for retail.

Facilitated by industry experts, the sessions will enable the transition of creative to creative enterprise.

The Courthouse Gallery+Studio aligns with the co working concept at the WEB Business Hub (next door to the Gallery), enabling makers to become part of a community and network where you can seek advice and support others, collaborate and share.

U p g r a d e o f t h e m a n s eImmediately next door to the Courthouse Gallery+Studio is a small three-roomed building called ‘the manse’. The Junction Co. have received advice that the building can be upgraded, and it is our vision to transform it into a purpose-built pop-up facility.

The pop-up space would have two retail spaces, and a small commercial kitchen. The space would enable creative enterprises to host their own pop-ups for the community to access their wares, whether it be jewellery, clothing, artwork or cupcakes.

The manse faces out onto a shared grass area, is close to the Gallery+Studio, and in the near vacinity of hospitality offerings, and would have the significant support of the community.

D e d i c a t e d S t u d i o S p a c eThe Junction Co. are committed to ensuring there is adequate studio space for established artists and makers, located nearby to the West End arts and culture precinct.

We envisage infrastructure nearby to the Courthouse Gallery+Studio is either repurposed or renovated to become a shared studio space. The studio would provide larger, individual space for hire (at reasonable rates), and provide a supportive environment for artists and makers to create and grow.

The dedicated studio space will be managed through The Junction Co.

5 6The launch pad is an integral part of the process giving the program attendees an end date and goal of launching their product.

This will bring together maker boot camp and elevate, both areas working together to achieve a sustainable business for the long term.

Part of the launch pad will be “Pitch week” an opportunity for the makers to pitch their product for sale in the Gallery+Studio Store and Stockroom to begin down the wholesale path while getting guidance.

The Gallery+Studio Store features the Australian handmade, design and produced products. These products have met a level of quality and execution, while the enterprise owners have demonstrated a high level of business practice. The Stockroom features a range of local and regional curated artwork. It provides an alternative avenue for local artists to sell their artwork beyond being part of an exhibition, and for buyers to access the extensive range of Western Australian artwork.

The Port Hedland community have consistently supported a variety of retail platforms, including pop-ups and markets.

Pop-ups combined with unique and supportive venue partners, open the creative business owners to honest feedback from consumers and market logistics experience. The Junction Co. will curate a series of pop-ups retail events for local makers, food trucks and other creative enterprises to participate in. This pop-up platform reinvigorates the concept of a ‘market’, while providing an avenue for local Hedlanders to explore iconic parts of Hedland.

The highlight of the Creative Enterprise program will be a curated collective application of Pilbara’s best to Australia’s most coveted Christmas markets namely The Big Design Market and Finders Keepers both operating in Sydney and Melbourne.

Participating in an event with over 200 stall holders, from all over Australia will expose the creative business owners to new markets, direct to consumer feedback in a metropolitan location, the opportunity to network with fellow creatives instigate collaborations and make real life connections that further influence their work and business path.

This retail platformed is highly competitive, and will significantly challenge and reward selected Creative Enterprise program participants. They would be retailing their items on Australia’s leading retail market.

The selection process for this retail platform will commence in April 2020.

The Junction Co. three distinct programs Creative Enterprise, Connecting Communities, and Artistic Excellence, respond to our strategic priorities.

The programs encourage developing a creative community identity with a focus on social inclusion and work-life balance, capacity building existing Pilbara creatives while also providing entrance pathways for residents interested in the art and design industry and guiding them towards success on state, national and international levels.

Connecting Community and Artistic Excellence compliment the Creative Enterprise project; at points the programs intersect and have opportunities for participant significant development.

C o n n e c t i n g C o m m u n i t y The Connecting Community Program has two distinct streams: ‘Exploring Play and ‘Creative Mindfulness’. Each program stream has been designed to actively improve community membership and engagement, encourage a balance of work and play, address mental health pressures which occur in the dynamic Pilbara lifestyle, and assisting in strengthening a Pilbara identity.

A r t i s t i c E x c e l l e n c e The Artistic Excellence program, designed to build the skills and knowledge of local artists, offer avenues artists can exhibit their work, and provide a clear pathway for artists to grow their practice. The program consists of four key activities: artistic development (art bootcamp weekends), exhibition program featuring local and other regional artists, gallery residency origram - allowing the community to engage with an artist as they create their work, and further understand their artistic practice, and an artist mentor program designed to provide critical feedback and artist support for those who apply to be part of the program. It will enable local artists to showcase their work in the Gallery Stockroom and beyond Port Hedland. The goal is to establish Hedland’s local artist community as one of the most supportive creative communities in Western Australia.

I n d u s t r y g r o w t h The Creative Enterprise program responds to the needs of the changing creative cohort, while providing grounded and structured activities that a creative anywhere on their journey (beginner to experienced) can be supported.

The program has been designed to be agile, needs-based, and breaks down barriers for remote, regional creatives wanting to launch and grow a creative enterprise.

Measures of success extend beyond full participation in our learning offerings, it’s the active demonstration of the learnt skills and techniques, the engagement with the Studio and it’s facilities, and regular connection with the Gallery+Studio team, to develop scalable and sellable products. The Creative Enterprise success is measured by the introduction of new businesses to the Pilbara community, the establishment and sustainable growth of a creative enterprise industry in the Pilbara.

S u p p l y C h a i nThe Creative Enterprise program seeks to positively impact regional supply chains and how enterprise can improve their distribution efficiency and the quality of the product a customer buys.

The project ensures the latest technology and processes are utilised, to enhance efficiency and accountability in the entire supply chain. The elevate business acumen component of the project specifically details how creative enterprise can utilise key supply chain nodes to improve productivity and user experience.

The topic areas which will be included are transport and postage management, data analytics to improve systems, the role of social media and keeping in touch, in real time, with stakeholders and consumers, and product identification (eg barcodes, QR codes). The project also has alignment with innovation and technology, and how creative thinking can develop products which serve more than just visually appealing, but have function which can innovate.
