This season, we were The Hall Where It Happened. The long-anticipated national tour of Hamilton made its first stop in Connecticut at The Bushnell, and to say that it was the focus of our year would not capture the magnitude of the hold that this show had on our patrons, our staff, and our region.

The excitement actually started at our season announcement in the spring of 2017, when we first told our subscribers that Hamilton would be visiting us for three weeks, and our staff began planning for the show’s on-sale and eventual arrival in Hartford. The Bushnell’s ever-growing commitment to audience engagement and patron experience meant we had to ensure the best possible interaction with our customers every step of the way. It wasn’t easy, but we were able to meet and in most cases exceed expectations to deliver a new standard of patron care that we will continue to build on as we constantly sharpen our focus on our relationships with our customers. The photos on this page show some of the ecstatic patrons and dedicated staff who came to The Bushnell very early on the morning of September 8 to secure their coveted Hamilton tickets.

It was a year of unprecedented financial success. Broadway is The Bushnell’s brand, its bread and butter. And with such strong touring product available to us this season, we were able to bring in nearly $33 million in revenue from the immense variety of offerings in our halls. Almost every Broadway Series offering met or exceeded its revenue goal—a very gratifying result and a testament to the ongoing health and popularity of Broadway as well as the exceptional hard work of our staff and volunteers.

Surplus years are the exception, of course, so instead of simply celebrating our success (though we were sure to do that too—we earned it), we continue to look down the road to the overall financial well-being of The Bushnell and to plan for leaner years and long-term prudent financial stewardship of the institution. That is one of the many reasons the generosity of our donors, sponsors, and funders is as important to us in boom years as it is in times of struggle. We are committed to paying off our $9.2 million debt in the next three years and a blockbuster or two won’t get us there. We need you, more than ever.

While Hamilton may have stolen focus this season, the world of The Bushnell is not all showtunes and scene changes. The pages of this Annual Message document the amazing breadth and depth of our mission and our impact on the community. We are as dedicated to being a leader in learning as we are to bringing you the next big Broadway hit. We’re committed to stimulating and leading important conversations in Connecticut and beyond, and you are an important part of that mission. Your dedication to The Bushnell through your attendance at our events, your financial support, and your participation in our community is the real blockbuster that will sustain us long after the curtain comes down on the latest hit show. The Bushnell experienced unprecedented financial success this year, generating over $3 million in operating surplus, allowing for a final net income after depreciation of $1.8 million.

This significant financial accomplishment was a major step forward in our goal to stabilize our financial future and pay off our debt in 2022.

This year we hosted over two hundred performances, entertaining 350,000 guests and grossing nearly $33 million in ticket sales and related revenues. And our generous community of donors provided us over $4.7 million in contributed support, enabling our continued commitment to offer valuable community and unique educational programming.

A sweet, sweet success. That’s the best way to characterize Ovations 2019: Sugar, Sugar. Lead by the incomparable Ovations committee, co-chaired by Ally Cormier and Betsy Udal, this year’s gala celebrated all things sweet while paying homage to its Broadway inspiration, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Every detail was considered – from the custom chocolate bars to the sweet-themed songs spun by the DJ during the after party – creating another magical evening raising funds in support of The Bushnell’s arts-in-education and community impact programming. This year, Ovations reached new heights with guest attendance and overall event proceeds. All made possible thanks to the generosity of our guests and sponsors, including our Lead Sponsor, Stanley Black & Decker. Support for Ovations enables us to continue the important work we are doing, both on our stages and throughout our community, to present, create, inspire, and share the very best in the performing arts. The 2018-19 school year marked the 26th year of The Bushnell’s PARTNERS® (Partners in Arts & Education Revitalizing Schools) program. Our education team provided arts-integrated curriculum to 41 schools in Greater Hartford and beyond, reaching over 13,000 students. Through in-classroom units and other community outreach initiatives, The Bushnell offered more than 18,000 unique artistic encounters to Connecticut youth.

This past year marked the start of a new chapter in PARTNERS history as we expanded the use of digital technology as a pedagogical tool to enhance student engagement and provided new opportunities for learning and curriculum development. This past spring we launched a pilot program in Meriden and Hartford schools that centered on a new music composition app, MusiQuest, created by Edify Technologies. In addition to supplying iPads and instruction for students, The Bushnell provided professional development and curriculum design for teachers. This enhancement to our traditional arts-integrated programming was met enthusiastically, as teachers applied MusiQuest to other academic areas, including computer science and literacy, and nearly 1,000 students created 15,000 unique “songs.”

Propelled and inspired by the possibilities that our digital world affords, these programs will be expanding for the upcoming school year, with planning underway to further incorporate aspects of artificial intelligence and virtual reality, including interactive, Alexa-style “chatbots,” which will add a level of depth and immersion to the learning experience. There is great potential to fully integrate literacy, the humanities, creativity, and technology in a dynamic way, reconceptualizing the very nature of a 21st century classroom.

As our school units are being re-imagined, the more traditional aspects of PARTNERS, including talent development, remain at the heart of our programming. Young artists, from vocalists and instrumentalists to poets and dancers, honed their craft through programs such as Jazzicians, The Ensign-Darling Vocal Fellowship and the Ellen J. Goldfarb Language Arts Festival. Musical Explorers, our popular introductory unit for the younger set (students in grades K-2), provided the context for the first integration of the MusiQuest application.

With a rich tradition and years of success to draw from, we are filled with anticipation for how the future of PARTNERS will unfold. With the generous support of our donors, who help make this program possible, and the enthusiasm of our participating schools, we continue to make an impact on the lives of Connecticut students, remaining true to those original words in our mission, “...and in partnership with others, deploy the arts as catalysts to advance education…”

A significant component of presenting Hamilton at The Bushnell was the opportunity to be an EduHam market. EduHam is the show’s education outreach initiative, sponsored nationally by the Gilder-Lehrman Institute, a non-profit institution dedicated to promoting the knowledge and understanding of American History. Numerous local donors also stepped forward to make sure this special day could happen in Hartford.

On December 13 last year, 2700 students from area Title I schools came together at The Bushnell to support one another’s artistic achievements at EduHam. To prepare for their experience, students studied the people and events of the Founding Era and developed a number of performance pieces based on what they learned. More than two dozen student performers presented their work on the set of Hamilton before enjoying a Q&A session with members of the production. Hamilton company member Tré Frazier, who grew up in Connecticut and is a graduate of the Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts, moderated the performances and the panel.

After lunch, students returned to the Mortensen for a special matinee of the production, which was also attended by Governor-elect (now Governor) Ned Lamont, who met with students after the show.

IN GRATITUDE FOR TONY AUTORINO,1938-2019Tony Autorino was born in the South End of Hartford and lived in Greater Hartford his entire life. He loved Hartford and many organizations in our city, but none more than The Bushnell, where he served as a Trustee and then Honorary Trustee for twenty-two years. His crowning achievement was as Chair of the Fund for the New Bushnell, which resulted in the beautiful addition to the original Memorial. Since 2001, countless people have been able to experience and celebrate the arts, education programs, community conversations, and special life events here thanks to this addition.

His intellectual leadership was undeniable, but perhaps most impactful for The Bushnell was that here, Tony led from his heart. That quality was evident in his leadership of the Fund for the New Bushnell, where he inspired others to give generously, and where he and his wife Betty became charter members of The Bushnell Cornerstone Society through their extraordinary philanthropy.

Tony’s generous heart led him to give so much of himself to The Bushnell, and that heart will always be present here and most palpably felt in Autorino Great Hall, so named in gratitude for the leadership and philanthropy of Tony and the Autorino family. It is an exceptional legacy for which we will always be grateful.

IN GRATITUDE FOR DR. ALAN J. SCHWARTZ, 1932-2019Growing up in the North End of Hartford, Alan Schwartz came to The Bushnell as a child, worked here as an usher in his teens, and returned to us in his adult life as a passionate patron, a generous donor, and a member of our Board of Overseers (recently renamed the Board of Ambassadors). Alan served on this Board for twenty-two years, bringing enthusiasm, insight, and friendship and serving as a most effective champion for The Bushnell.

The Bushnell was Alan’s second home in his teen years and was where his love of live entertainment began. He and his friend and fellow usher, Charles Nelson Reilly, were witness to many wonderful performances during the mid-1940s. There was a camaraderie among the ushers that stayed with Alan his entire life, and he held today’s corps of volunteer ushers in the highest regard.

Several years ago, we asked the community to share stories about their connections to The Bushnell. Alan wrote: “When I sit in Mortensen Hall and look up at the exquisite ceiling, I am home. It’s where I want to be. I feel the presence of all those brilliant artists who have graced its stage. They—to use a neurological term—are a major part of my autobiographical memory. More than that, they are part of the fabric of my soul. This is my Bushnell, the home in my heart.”

When we look at our glorious mural, Drama, in Mortensen Hall, we will always gratefully remember Alan’s zest for life, incredible intellect, passion for The Bushnell, and abiding friendship with so many of us here.
