The San Gabriel Educational Foundation is thrilled to offer SEF Summer Academy, a 2019 tuition-based summer program. SEF aims to offer appropriate classes that meet the individual needs of our community. This year we are offering a variety of enrichment classes that are academically challenging, student-oriented, and fun! Our classes are designed to complement the regular school-year program. Students entering grades 2–8 attend three classes each day; incoming 1st-graders are in one self-contained class. Classes have a limited enrollment and are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. The SEF Summer Academy is available to all students entering 1st through 8th grade residing in San Gabriel as well as surrounding communities, or those visiting San Gabriel for the summer months. The San Gabriel Educational Foundation is thrilled to offer SEF Summer Academy, a 2019 tuition-based summer program. RegistrationProcess

Please enroll your child for the grade he or she will enter fall 2019.1. Choose class options: Carefully read class descriptions and grade level served, and then create a class schedule. Fill out one registration form per student. All grades 2-8 classes MUST select at least two choices for each period with the exception of Incoming 1st Grade: select corresponding 4-hour class.2. Submit completed registration form with full tuition payment, 1st payment installment (50% of full fee), or online payment receipt for each student. Registration forms without payment or online proof of payment will be considered incomplete and will delay student enrollment. Applications will not be accepted by fax or e-mail. 3. Registration Methods: Live Registration: Friday, April 12, 2019 from 4:00–6:30pm in the School District Board Room at 408 Junipero Serra Drive, San Gabriel. Bring completed registration forms and payment. **NO REGISTRATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED PRIOR TO THE LIVE REGISTRATION. Final class schedule confirmations will be mailed or e-mailed a week prior to the start of the program.

Classes are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. We will contact you ONLY if the classes indicated on your registration form are full, or if there is a conflict with a class. Please keep a copy of all registration forms for your records.

ClassCancellation

Summer Academy registration will close when enrollment numbers have been reached. Classes that do not meet the minimum number of students may be canceled.

ScheduleChanges

Please consider your choices carefully before submitting your student’s registration. Since these changes can negatively impact enrollment, teacher employment and administrative costs, a $25 Change Request Fee will be charged for each schedule change after the registration form has been received. Schedule change fees must be paid at the time of the request and are not refundable. Schedule changes can only be honored depending on space availability and are not guaranteed. No class changes will be accepted after Thursday, June 13, 2019.

Payment Options

Payments must accompany registration. Please note all fees must be paid in full by May 22, 2019. Please make Check/Money Orders payable to: San Gabriel Educational Foundation (SEF). Please note if paying by cash, it will only be accepted in person during the onsite/live registration or in the office as received and verified by a SEF employee.

A two-installment payment plan option is available: You may pay your tuition in two equal installments. The 1st half of the payment must be paid at the time of registration. The final payment is due to SEF no later than May 22, 2019. Final payments can be mailed to: SEF P.O. Box 1175 San Gabriel, CA 91778.

Credit Card Payments can be made via SEFfor8schools.org or denoted on the registration form. PLEASE NOTE: A copy of the on-line payment receipt/proof of payment must accompany the registration form submission. Advanced online payment is not a form of registration and is not a guarantee of class enrollment.

A $30 fee will be charged for all NSF, stopped, or any returned checks. For all returned payments or failure to pay tuition will jeopardize student’s Summer Academy enrollment.

Refund Policy

All refunds will be based on full tuition amount. If you made a partial payment, your refund will be factored according to the full tuition amount. Refunds for withdrawing from the program must be in writing. Refund requests will be processed according to the date received as follows:• Before April 19th: 90% refund • From April 20th – May 20th: 60% refund • NO REFUNDS will be issued after May 20th

BehaviorStudents will be expected to demonstrate good citizenship at all times. Students who disrupt the class or prevent other students from learning will be dismissed from the SEF Summer Academy program. Students dismissed for disciplinary reasons will not be eligible for any refund of tuition or fees and may be liable for any damage caused by such behavior.

AttendancePolicy

Absences should be reported to the Summer Academy site your child will attend. There are no minimum attendance requirements for grades 1–8 SEF Summer Academy classes.

Getting Ready for 1st Grade: Oh, The Places We’ll Go! (Grade 1)Adventures await your students as we take off and explore the world’s 7 continents. We will discover new places, cultures, and the animals that live there. Join us for this fun, hands-on class that reinforces Kindergarten skills, while bridging and enhancing kids’ readiness for first grade. Each day will be filled with exciting adventures, incorporating the music and culture of each stop on our journey. Come aboard, your passport awaits! Parents: We will cover all the academic areas—reading, writing, math, science, art, and music—to build your incoming first grader’s enthusiasm for school.

2ND – 5TH CLASS OPTIONSPeriod 1 Classes (8:00am – 9:15am)Math Superheroes! (Grades 2-3)Students will become superheroes in Math! Students will battle against themselves as they work to improve their computational skills. We will defeat math anxiety and expand our knowledge of place-value, numeration, basic facts, measurement and even geometry. Students will strengthen their math skills through competitions, games, interactions with manipulatives, and even art! Come be a Math Superhero and help defeat those who believe Math to be boring!

Storytelling and the English Language Arts: Connecting Reading and Writing With the Art of Storytelling (Grades 3-5)Students will explore various forms of literature and develop writing, reading, listening and speaking skills while having fun sharing stories. Through a standards-aligned journey, students will interpret and explore different genres, respond through writing to literature, develop linguistic and communication skills, all through the production and presentation of stories.

Endless Science (Grades 4-5)Does your 4th or 5th grader love science? Do they ask their teachers, “What’s for science?” Imagine no more. Students in this class will be conducting science experiments throughout the summer program. They will jot down their observations in their science notebooks. By the end of the program, they will be able to take their notebooks home to conduct experiments in front of you!

Lego Robotics (Grades 2-5) Get ready… in this class students will build new and different projects each day as they graduate from simple machines, to motorized mechanisms, to robotics with basic programming. They’ll learn all about engineering principles such as gears, wheels, axles, levers, and pulleys. This class is as fun as it is educational!

Period 2 Classes (9:30am – 10:45am)Hands on Arts and Crafts (Grades 2-5)Creating art is amazing! Come and join us as we explore a variety of art projects. Students will learn new craft skills, build on their fine motor skills, and expand on their artistic abilities. Projects include: weaving key chains, salt jars, stitching with yarn to make something nifty, stained glass ornaments, graph paper artwork, tissue paper artwork and string art. Materials will be provided for the students.

Welcome to Writer’s Camp: Adventurer’s Edition (Grades 4-5)Students will take an adventure through the writing process while participating in Writer’s Camp writing groups. Students will create various words of art and explore editing and revision techniques, delve into ways to research, produce, and distribute informational and narrative writing, all while growing as an author. Get ready for a writing adventure!!

Junior Scientists (Grades 2-3) “Look! Up in the sky! It’s a bird. It’s a plane.” No, look no further, it’s science experiments!! Students in this class will conduct many science experiments throughout the length of the program. Every experiment will have your child walk through the scientific process to capture full understanding. Best of all, the science experiments will be fun!

Coding Wizards! (Grades 2-5)Students, you can create your own animations, program, and games with MIT’s Scratch, Python, Sploder, and more! Computer programming helps with brain development, math skills, and logic and is tons of fun!!

Period 3 Classes (11:00am – 12:15pm)Math is a Blast! (Grades 4-5)Is math not fun for you? Math can be fun! In this class, your child will review place-value, basic facts, computation, fractions, decimals, geometry, and even algebra! Students will strengthen their math skills through competitions, games, interactions with manipulatives, and even art! Come and join the fun and review as well as enrich your skills in math.

Studio Art (Grades 2-5) In this studio art class, students will learn about the elements of art, complete drawing and painting projects, and have galleries to showcase their works of art. They will learn about composition, color, technique, and personal expression while using a variety of mixed media. They will look at original works of art and learn those artists’ techniques to make their personal masterpieces to take home.

Welcome to Writer’s Camp: Explorers Edition (Grades 2-3) Students will journey through the writing process while participating in Writers Camp writing groups. Students will create various words of art and explore editing and revision techniques while developing ways to grow as a writer. Students will also produce and distribute writing as they progress through the Explorers Edition. Let’s get ready to write and have fun!

Video Game Design! (Grades 2-5)Students enrolled in this class will learn how to design and modify their own exciting arcade-style video games! They will learn how to control characters, objects, and outcomes in their games as they increase the difficulty level and add more features.

MIDDLE SCHOOL CLASS OPTIONS Period 1 Classes (8:15am – 9:30am)Intro to Middle School Writing (Grade 6) In this class, your child will be introduced to sixth grade writing standards and expectations such as formal introductions, supporting evidence, and strong conclusions. The writing process (prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing) will also be introduced as a tool to help your child become an independent writer. They will express, discover, record, develop, and reflect on ideas in the following writing forms: narrative, expository, and persuasive.

Soar into New Heights in 7th Grade Math (Grades 7-8)This class will reinforce and build upon your mathematical skills. With the alignment of state standards, incoming 7th grade students will deepen their knowledge in proportional relationships and operations of rational numbers. They will also recognize patterns used in mathematics, variables, one-step and two-step equations. In addition, this class will help students to learn how to generate equivalent expressions. Cornell note-taking system will be integrated into each math lesson. A STEM challenge activity will be introduced every week!

TechTeens: Video Game Design! (Grades 6-8) Students will learn how to design and modify their own exciting arcade style video games! They will learn how to control characters, objects, and outcomes in their games as they increase the difficulty level and add more features.

Spanish Immersion (Grades 6-8)Give your child the gift of learning Spanish! In this class, students will have the opportunity to immerse in the Spanish language and culture. Each class will incorporate art, storytelling, games, music, and multimedia activities to learn Spanish in a fun way!

Architecture Academy! (Grades 6-8)Part math, part science, and part art, this STEAM class has it all! Using assorted architectural & bridge building model sets, this class teaches basic drafting, scale, symmetry, proportion, and geometry. Students will build iconic models and learn about famous architects as they explore creativity.

Period 2 Classes (9:45am – 11:00am)Expanding Your Writing Skills (Grades 7-8)Join us as we expand your child’s writing repertoire by introducing different writing strategies, brainstorming ideas, organizing thoughts and research, and understanding the whole writing process to its extent. The main purpose of this class is to have your child feel comfortable broadening their writing skills to a different level.

Welcome to Middle School with Emphasis in 6th Grade Math (Grade 6)Making a smooth transition to 6th grade is a breeze with this Intro to 6th Grade class. You will get a jump-start in learning how to build your organization and time management skills. Effective methods and strategies will be introduced to help you adjust and manage to the rigorous schedules of middle school. In addition to a smooth transition, this class will place emphasis on the state standards in math. Students will learn to understand and improve their problem-solving skills by using real-life applications. In addition, students will deepen their mental math and estimation skills using whole number operations. This summer course will also include numerical expressions, factors, fractions, and decimals along with solving equations involving a variable. Period 3 Classes (11:15am – 12:30pm)Creative Writing Workshop (Grades 6-8)Have you ever wondered how Walt Disney created his famous character Mickey Mouse? He simply used his imagination to create the stories we know today. In this class, students will use their creativity to write stories, poems, and other narratives to express their imagination. They will use a variety of media, study literary terms and mechanisms, and be encouraged to share and discuss their writing amongst peers.

Science Madness (Grades 6-8)If you are intrigued with the world of science, then this science course is the class for you! This exciting middle school Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) course integrates Earth Science, Life Science, Physical Science, and Engineering Design into a hands-on and engaging summer program. By exploring and experimenting with skills in these disciplines, you will discover new concepts and draw conclusions about the science world around you.

Mock Trial, Public Speaking and Debate (Grades 6-8)Are you a person of passion and conviction, with a love for critical thinking and dialogue? In this class, students learn to use logic and other rhetorical tools to support their positions and to express themselves succinctly and skillfully. Students learn to walk and talk with assuredness and purpose, overcome jitters, and deliver speeches with confi dence and animation!

Creative Sculpture! (Grades 6-8)Students will learn how to make fi gurines, mosaics, multi-media sculptures and more while they learn about famous sculptors like Jeff rey Koons, Kenneth Price and Walter Furlan! Students will be taught the principles of sculpture, and explore with various media. Come join the fun!

TechTeens: App Inventor! (Grades 6-8)Students will design their own apps using MIT’s App Inventor program! They will be able to create apps of all diff erent types from animation-based, to STEM-based, to just plain old fun games.

This authorization is given in advance of any required care to empower a representative or official of SGUSD to give consent for such treatment as the physician may deem advisable. This authorization is effective throughout the duration of the program.

Publicity Waiver: SEF members, officers and/or their representatives may occasionally take photographs or film your child in any SEF program (e.g. Afterschool Enrichment Program, Summer School, etc.) for publicity and informational purposes. These photos or films will be used to either display your child’s talent or highlight the importance of the program in SEF’s publicity materials, including but not limited to, articles in SEF newsletters, SEF brochures and public service announcements. Should you have objections, please write a letter stating so and enclose it with your registration form.
