Dear Holy Name Families,
The month of November looks bright and exciting. We enter the month
with the opening of New England’s “Discover Catholic School’s Week”
from November 3 through November 8. This is a time dedicated to getting
the word out about the success of Catholic schools. Without fail, new visi-
tors to Holy Name Parish School are struck by the sense that they are enter-
ing a special place. The culture of a Catholic School is reflected in our
classrooms, our students, our faculty, and our mission. We, as a Catholic
school are committed not only to what our children know, but also what
kind of young adults and adults they will become. We build our culture on
the process that develops the whole child to reach his or her potential and
make a difference as a citizen of the world. As a community of faith and
learning we provide our students with the opportunity to grow and develop
both spiritually and academically. Recently, a Holy Name graduate shared
with us the following: “ The foundation that I developed as a student at
Holy Name Parish School not only prepared me to thrive in demanding aca-
demic environments in high school and college, but also provided the foun-
dation for lifelong learning.”
The stories are many and gratifying; successful students beginning their
journey here, moving to fine schools and continuing through college and
career.
Sunday, November 3rd at 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM, we will be holding an
Open House for prospective families. We look forward to sharing our good
news and we ask you to join in the good news of Holy Name.
Warmly,
Kathleen J. Caulfield M.Ed

Thank you to everyone for the generous donations which will
help those in need.
Mr. Reilly’s sixth grade homeroom started their weekly pickup
of classroom recycled materials. This, combined with our lunch
room recycling, will make a difference in the amount of trash
our school creates. Every bit helps in conserving our natural re-
sources! In mid-November the Massachusetts Department of the
Environment will have additional bins available to expand our
commitment to recycling. Many thanks to the “Green Team”
members whose assistance school wide helps this program

New this year! Scholastic is making it easy for you and your child to donate to All for the Books, a literacy
effort. At the cash register, your child can donate his or her coin change to All for the Books by telling the
cashier to “Round Up” to the nearest dollar. Whatever we collect at the cash registers by rounding up and
all the money raised by the Book Basket raffle goes to All for the Books. This year our Student Council
will be using the All for the Books donations to purchase books to share with our neighbors at the Italian
Home for Children. Last year this effort got 80 books into the hands of the kids at the Italian Home. As an
extra benefit, Scholastic will match whatever we raise for All for the Books with a donation of their own to
a literacy project. Win – Win – Win! So encourage your child to “Round Up” at the register. Thanks!
Can’t make it to the Fair? There’s an even greater selection of books at the Scholastic on-line Book Fair.
Anyone can order books, grandparents or out of town friends. Just go to
https://www.holynameparishschool.org/scholastic-book-fair between Oct. 28-Nov. 8 and Holy Name will benefit
from your on-line purchase.
As always, thanks for your support of the Book Fair. It’s a great way to get your child excited about read-
ing! Books make wonderful Christmas gifts, too! See you at the Fair!
PLEASE NOTE: For those who wish to participate in school sponsored events, it is mandatory that every
person has an approved CORI and has completed the VIRTUS program.
YOU WILL BE ASKED TO PRESENT YOUR VOLUNTEER IDENTIFICATION
CARD.

while at the event.
Start your holiday shopping with great local vendors including Top it Off, Nicole Sull Crea-
tions, Ferns by Sheila, Thirty-one bags, Alex’s Ugly Sauce and many more. Send the kids to the
kids room for games and activities, including the famous cake walk in Finn Hall, and a visit
from Santa Claus!
Participate in the multiple giveaways going on throughout the day. Visit “the Pit” for a chance to win
some amazing gift baskets featuring legos, star wars & LOL Dolls, chocolate, wine, and more. Stop by
our raffle table and enter to win some great prizes including free admission for four to Legoland and the
Discovery Museum, tickets to Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, an Ipad, and an American Girl Doll.
Take a break to grab some delicious lunch items from the Sausage Guy food truck and don’t forget des-
sert. Grab some treats and play the lollipop game at the bake table where kids will have a chance to win a
casual day pass.
The Christmas Bazaar is truly a community oriented event and many of the activities depend on the gener-
osity and donations of our school families. We truly appreciate everyone who has already contributed or
plans to volunteer on the day or donate cakes, baked goods, and items for our gift baskets.

Fifth and Sixth Grade Spanish Class Fifth grades in Spanish Class study The Day of the Dead
which is a Mexican holiday. It is celebrated on November 1 & 2. It was originally celebrated by the
Aztecs in August, but the Spanish con-
quistadors changed the dates to coin-
cide with the Christian celebration of
All Saint's Day and All Soul's Day. It
is a festive holiday remembering the
lives of deceased family members. The
festivities consist of parades, picnics,
costumes, grave-side gatherings with
song and dance. The sugar skulls are
central to the holiday. They represent
the departed. It is a celebration of life,
not death.
The House on Mango Street is an amazing book written by
Sandra Cisneros. It is an anthology of the residents of Mango
Street in Chicago. It is an autobiographical work describing
Cisnero's early life. The sixth grade students created original works of
art from various excerpts from the book. They presented their " obras
de arte' to the class

Here is what is happening in the Technology Lab: Mrs. Davis has been working with Grades 1-6 on
Digital Citizenship since the beginning of the school year. They are using resources from Common
Sense Media to help remind themselves to be kind online and to protect their information.
K0 and K1 have started to learn beginning coding skills. They listened to The Very Hungry Catepillar
and the Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything and they used the Code & Go Mouse to navigate
through a map of the story. The students learned beginning coding skills and vocabulary.
Grades 1 & 2 are learning how the computer works. They watched a video about the inner computer and
have been dissecting a real computer to see the actual parts. We have already started to construct a paper
model of a laptop that the students will label and take home.
