I am pleased to personally invite you to the 2020 AIA

Florida Convention & Trade Show at The Breakers

Palm Beach Resort. This year, we salute the CRAFT

of architecture as honed over lifetimes of practice,

our responsibility as COMMUNITY stewards and our

CULTURE, which is strengthened by our diversity

and connected by the threads of our collective and

individual life experiences. The 2020 convention

offers a huge array of content celebrating CRAFT I

COMMUNITY I CULTURE.

Retired Major Brian Shul, USAF will kick off

the convention with a retrospective on his life

adventures and unplanned journeys. A fighter pilot

who barely survived a wartime shoot down, Brian’s

amazing second life as photographer and artist is an

uplifting tale of personal evolution.

AIA Gold Medal winner Marlon Blackwell, FAIA and

Meryati Blackwell, AIA will discuss Abstract Unions,

the design process that draws upon vernaculars,

building typologies and the contradictions of place.

Danny Forster, AIA will discuss the sometimes-

controversial benefits and misperceptions of high

rise modular. We continue the Wicked Water

conversation with leading resilience officers from

around the state, and a high-powered panel of

some of Florida’s most forward-thinking mayors

will discuss affordable housing, transportation and

community resilience.

Join me and the entire leadership team at the

Thursday night’s President’s Reception with light

fare and camaraderie. Other social opportunities

include: “friendly golf”; the ever-popular mixer of

associates, EPs and more seasoned leaders at the

Drink and Draw competition; and, as a real bonus,

the Sumi-e and sake Japanese art and sake tutorial

and social hour (it will sell out!) hosted by my friend,

Don Yoshino, FAIA.

Finally, join 2019 President Nat Soto, FAIA and me

as we host AIA Florida/Caribbean Design & Honor

Awards Reception & Presentation on Saturday night

recognizing Florida/Caribbean members for their

amazing accomplishments in design and in deed.

I look forward to seeing you there as we celebrate

the CRAFT | COMMUNITY | CULTURE of our

profession during 2020 AIA Florida Convention &

Trade Show on July 9-12, 2020, in Palm Beach,

Florida.

N Immersive Design with VR and AR for Architecture10:00 AM-11:00 AM | 1 HSWAugmented and virtual reality are changing the way that architects create buildings. From design to fabrication and from construction to facilities management, SHoP’s Adam Chernick and Chris Morse are thinking-up new ways to solve industry problems. From building custom experiences directly with clients to offering teams the ability to spatially collaborate, VRXR will give architects the opportunity to design in real time and also engage the public by immersing them into spaces before they are built. This process ensures that the client’s vision is realized while also providing designers another opportunity to ensure that health, safety and welfare is fully addressed. Virtual and augmented realities are no longer in the future for architecture—this is happening now. Speakers: Gabe Paez, Founder/CEO– Wild, Alex Coulombe/Agile Lens

P Lessons Learned - Streamsong, a Custom Designed Resort Development in the Florida Bone Valley11:15 AM-12:15 PM | 1 HSWThe session will focus on the challenges and successes that occurred during the conception, design and construction of a world-class golf resort that intended to showcase the potential for development of previously mined lands, including the regulations and standards that govern the development of this type of site. Historic Preservation Architect, Rick Gonzalez, AIA, will focus on the historic importance of some of the buildings we will highlight while Ana Aponte will focus on the placemaking strategies implemented for the past 25 years from an urban design perspective. Learn how the decades have affected the culture and community of the area and what the road ahead might look like. After the Downtown Tour, attendees visit the Historic 1916 Palm Beach County Court House for an in-depth tour. Tour Guides: Rick Gonzalez, AIA, President and Co-Founder at REG Architects and Ana M. Aponte, AICP, City Urban Designer at the City of West Palm Beach Fee: $50 - Includes shuttle, lunch and gratuity

THE BREAKERS: A BALANCE BETWEEN PRESERVATION AND MODERNIZATION 3:00 PM-5:00 PM | 2 HSWThe Breakers’ storied history is well documented; from its opening in 1896 to the rebuild efforts after the fires of 1903 and 1925. The Flagler heirs built the current Breakers to reopen in a record-breaking 11½ months to the first guest check-in on December 29, 1926, just after Christmas and the start of the Palm Beach season. Now, The Breakers, with the mission to strive for a balance between preservation and modernization, continues the tradition of excellence, ensuring the resort remains energized and appealing to future generations. Peacock + Lewis Architects and The WEITZ Company will lead a tour of the Circle Dining Room Renovations, showing the intricacies

behind recently completed projects, while explaining the benefits of the Design-Build delivery method; assuring projects open for the Palm Beach season, not unlike the challenges met during The Breakers’ past. Fee: $35

FRIDAY, JULY 10, 2020 CONCRETE MATERIALS PLANT TOUR AND HANDS ON TRAINING 8:00 AM–12:00 PM | 3 HSWNot your average tour! In addition to a tour of the Oldcastle West Palm Beach concrete production facility, attendees will receive hands-on training to help connect design with the work done in the field. Be prepared to review the components and participate in the assembly of segmental retaining walls and permeable pavements, CMU wall systems and thin veneer finishes. See the complete production process from raw materials to finished product, with a focus on control methods utilized in concrete product manufacturing. Fee: $45 - Includes shuttle and lunch

THE NEW NORTON: THE MAKING OF A CULTURAL ICON 7:00 PM–10:00 PM | 2 HSW Join a “Night at the Museum” for an opportunity to learn of the procurement, planning, design, and construction of the transformative expansion museum project by Foster + Partners in West Palm Beach: The New Norton. The expansion boldly re-orients the main entrance, restoring the logic of the symmetrical east-west axis, created in 1941 by original architect Marion Sims Wyeth, and transforms how the Museum engages the city. A continuing education session will be followed by a tour of the Museum during “ART AFTER DARK,” an engaging weekly series featuring

diverse art programming, which enhances the museum’s relationship with the community. Fee: $45 - Includes shuttle, cocktails and appetizers.
