TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 15Honoring MALLY ZOBERMAN RUTKOFF

Coming together has never been more important.

Dear Friends,

We began planning this annual event in what was a different world. What is not different today is the urgent need for teaching the lessons of the Holocaust to new generations. That’s why, rather than look back at all that has changed, this unprecedented moment calls for looking forward.

Although we are actively planning for our reopening, the Museum’s current pivot to an all-digital, all-the-time enterprise will shape our future. Demand for our online resources and teaching support has soared, and we are experimenting and reimagining our work for this new world. Our role has always been to help build and lead the fields of Holocaust scholarship and education as well as genocide prevention. Now these fields face challenges and opportunities as never before.

Thanks to your ongoing partnership, the Museum is well-positioned to learn from this crisis and grow into an even stronger, more impactful institution, whose educational message is more urgent than ever as manifestations of antisemitism and hatred rise. We take inspiration from the Chicago community, which has enthusiastically supported our institution since before it opened, recognizing the unique value of a national “living memorial” to the victims of the Holocaust. We’re deeply grateful for your generous commitment to our mission.

With gratitude,

SARA J. BLOOMFIELDMuseum Director

HONOREE FEATURED SPEAKER

MALLY ZOBERMAN RUTKOFF, the daughter of two Holocaust survivors, understood the need to connect with others who shared her family’s history. Mally served as the first chair of the Children of Survivors group in Chicago and launched the National Children of Survivors trips to Washington, DC. She has exhibited extraordinary leadership for the Museum and throughout the community, where she is executive vice chair of the Michael Reese Health Trust and committee chair of the Jewish United Fund for the Fund for Innovation in Health and honorary director Women’s Division, and past chair and current board member of CJE SeniorLife. Mally’s three children are following in their mother’s footsteps as active members of the Museum’s Next Generation. She is now the proud grandmother of six members of the youngest generation.

R. DEREK BLACK was raised in a prominent white supremacist family and spent his teenage years helping his father expand the world’s first online racial hate community, Stormfront. After being homeschooled, Black attended New College of Florida and encountered student protests, as well as a new circle of friends, who prompted him to reexamine the movement’s ideology. Although he initially held onto his beliefs, Black eventually conceded that the ideology he had fought so hard to promote was harmful. Since renouncing the movement and philosophy in 2013, he has been coming to terms with his identity and sharing his experiences. In his current work at the University of Chicago, he is exploring the medieval and early modern origins of race, racist ideologies, and antisemitic beliefs.

(LEFT TO RIGHT) Alex Entratter, Jordyn Gross, Aaron Tucker and Lauren Martin, and Danny and Faylyn Kaufman gather at the 2019 Next Generation fundraiser.

“ The Museum is an agent for peace, tolerance, and understanding in the world. The Nazi genocide in Europe created unfathomable and profound suffering which humanity will never fully recover from. Through education, programming, and its focus on cases of human suffering today, our Museum gives those that perished in the Holocaust a voice to scream out, ‘Remember me. Remember my humanity. Never let this happen again.’”

SUPPORT FOR SURVIVORS AND THEIR FAMILIESThe Museum is proud to partner with the Chicagoland community of survivors and their families to ensure Holocaust remembrance and education. Survivors have motivated generations of people with their courage and resilience and have shared their Holocaust experiences so that others may learn the lessons of what can happen when hate is left unchecked. They serve as a warning and an inspiration.

The HOLOCAUST SURVIVORS AND VICTIMS RESOURCE CENTER searches for documents in the records of the International Tracing Service and other digitized collections of the Museum free of charge to survivors, their families, and families of victims. Survivors who require documentation to file for compensation are given the highest priority. Reference requests can be made in person (when the Museum reopens), online, or via e-mail, letter, or telephone. Learn more at ushmm.org/resourcecenter or by contacting [email protected].

The BENJAMIN AND VLADKA MEED REGISTRY OF HOLOCAUST SURVIVORS is seeking the names of all survivors of the Holocaust and Nazi-era persecution—whether or not currently living—in order to record their experiences for future generations, assist survivors and their families in attempts to trace missing relatives and friends, and provide reference to scholars of the Holocaust, genealogists, and members of the public. Inclusion in the Registry is voluntary and contact information will not be made public. Family members can register survivors posthumously. Learn more at ushmm.org/resourcecenter or by contacting [email protected].

The MUSEUM’S COLLECTION not only provides unique and previously unknown documentation of the Holocaust for scholars and educators, but also serves as the anchor by which to document the experiences of individual survivors and victims. The Museum is actively collecting artwork, clothing, uniforms, textiles, documents, correspondence, diaries, photographs, and other items from the period beginning at the end of World War I to the close of the Jewish displaced persons (DP) camps in the mid-1950s. If you or members of your family have artifacts related to the Holocaust and would like to discuss donating them to the Museum, please e-mail [email protected].

IN FIVE YEARS, less than 0.0 1% of World War II veterans will be alive and the youngest Holocaust survivor will be 79. Who do we want to tell their stories to the 1.9 billion young people across the globe who need to hear them?

UNITED STATES HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL COUNCILA number of Chicagoans have been appointed by the President of the United States to serve on the United States Holocaust Memorial Council. We are grateful for the devoted leadership and thoughtful guidance provided by these individuals over the last three decades.

RISA K. LAMBERT was dedicated to the Museum from its inception and involved many of her friends in supporting this historic venture. As a fitting tribute, her family and friends generously named the annual Chicago luncheon in her memory.
