On behalf of the District Board and everyone at Blackhawk Technical College, I welcome you to our 2020 Commencement Ceremony. The Class of 2020 has shown exceptional resilience and a strong sense of purpose in completing their programs despite the interruption of a global public health crisis. While we may not be celebrating today how we imagined, I have learned that our graduates exhibited incredible fortitude and focus as they pursued and achieved their hopes and dreams. Each student has a unique journey. Every student has a unique story. We are honored and privileged that you chose Blackhawk Technical College to be a part of it. Our graduates have completed programs that are critical to the well-being of our community and will move on to make our communities a better place for all of us to live and work. Our graduates are on the frontlines across our region, our state, and our nation. We couldn’t be prouder of all of you and your accomplishments and welcome you into the family of Blackhawk Alumni. Graduates, as you celebrate your achievements today, take a moment to thank all who have supported you in your efforts to get to this moment. I encourage you to reflect on the qualities and strengths you have developed that helped you achieve this important goal. Kwamesha Milsap

2019-20 Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS) Ambassador

Kwamesha Milsap is Blackhawk’s Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS) District Ambassador program. The program selects one student from each of the state’s 16 technical college districts to act as advocates for vocational

and technical education. Students serve a one-year term and are called upon to make special appearances, give presentations and participate in various events on behalf of the WTCS.

To be considered for this honor, students must be nominated by faculty or staff and complete an application packet. Students are then selected to participate in the interview process. During the interview, students present deliver a presentation describing their personal journey and decision to attend a technical college.Milsap, a nursing student from Beloit, has represented Blackhawk Technical College at the state-level this year and will graduate in Dec. 2020.

Kristine Weir-Martell

2019-20 Faculty of the Year

Kristine Weir-Martell began teaching part-time at Blackhawk in early 2015 and became a full-time instructor just one year ago. In her short time at Blackhawk, she has made a huge impact on her students. She received multiple nominations for this year’s honor praising her for her high-level of engagement in the classroom, her compassion for her students, and her desire to see all students succeed.

One nomination read, “Kristine is a wonderful instructor. She has given me inspiration to push myself to do my absolute best. She is very kind and wants all of her students to be successful.”

As an instructor, she motivates and encourages students, bringing out the best in them. “As a student in her class I felt energized to learn each and every class time.”

Kristine teaches communication classes in Blackhawk’s Business and General Education Division. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, Communication, and Theatre from the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire and a Master of Arts degree in Communication from the University of Wisconsin – Whitewater.

Shawn Lerch

2019 Distinguished AlumniPTA Class of 1996 CEO of Sauk Prairie Healthcare

From technical college student to CEO, Shawn Lerch credits his start at Blackhawk and the Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA) faculty for jumpstarting his career in health care. He is currently the CEO of Sauk Prairie Healthcare located in Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin, and is a living testimony to the foundation for success that is provided by a Wisconsin Technical College System education. A native of Albany, Wisconsin and a veteran of the United States Navy, Lerch has used his PTA degree to launch him into a lifelong career in rural healthcare.

During the PTA program at Blackhawk, Lerch completed his last clinical site rotation and externship at Columbus Hospital. It was clear to the hospital leadership that Lerch demonstrated talent and promise, so he was hired as a PTA. While working as a PTA, Lerch completed his Bachelor of Science degree and was later promoted to Vice President of Facility Services. As an employee, he was consistently recognized for his ability, background, and potential.

Lerch went on to complete his master’s degree in health care administration and made the leap to the CEO desk at Miners’ Colfax Medical Center in Raton, New Mexico; a large hospital that provided critical care between Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Pueblo, Colorado. After five years in Raton, and being offered positions at larger healthcare systems, Lerch returned to Wisconsin to be closer to his family and to be part of a community-based health system.
